American College of Lifestyle Medicine Leads Global Lifestyle Medicine Week Celebration May 29 to June 4

News Image

“It is becoming clear that health care delivery must move away from the familiar practice of simply managing symptoms and toward addressing the root cause of chronic disease.”

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) will observe the 2022 Global Lifestyle Medicine Week from May 29 to June 4 with a public awareness campaign, engagement opportunities and educational discounts focused on the rapidly growing medical specialty.

Participants can access a free toolkit to spread awareness about the six pillars of lifestyle medicine, obtain up to half price off continuing medical education (CME) and continuing education (CE) courses, receive free lifestyle medicine resources and join ACLM without paying a new member fee. A complete list of Lifestyle Medicine Week opportunities is available at lmweek.org.

“It is an exciting time for the medical specialty of lifestyle medicine, which has experienced exponential growth in interest among medical professionals, policymakers, health systems and consumers not just in the U.S. but across the world,” said ACLM President Catherine Collings, MD, MS, FACC, DipABLM. “More and more, it is becoming clear that health care delivery must move away from the familiar practice of simply managing symptoms and toward addressing the root cause of chronic disease through the integration of lifestyle medicine. We enter Global Lifestyle Medicine Week as inspired as ever to make lifestyle medicine the foundation of all health and health care.”

Lifestyle medicine uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Lifestyle medicine certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.

Chronic disease is a rising global emergency. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancer could be prevented, primarily with improvements to diet and lifestyle. As the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) observed in its recent report Chronic Health Conditions: Federal Strategy Needed to Coordinate Diet-Related Efforts, “selected chronic health conditions linked to diet are prevalent, deadly, and costly. These diet-related conditions include cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke), cancer, diabetes, and obesity.”

Medical professionals, policymakers, health systems and consumers are increasingly recognizing the potential of evidence-based, intensive lifestyle change to address the root causes of chronic disease, rather than the less effective approach of merely managing symptoms. Growth statistics include:

  • ACLM, founded in 2004, has grown to nearly 8,000 members.
  • Student-led Lifestyle Medicine Interest Groups exist at more than 70 campuses across the U.S.
  • Today some 48 lifestyle medicine residency sites exist across 82 programs.
  • Since certification began in 2017 by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, more than 2,004 physicians in the U.S. have become board certified in lifestyle medicine, along with 778 other health professionals.
  • Globally, 3,225 physicians are now certified as well as 1,018 other health professionals.
  • Some 58 health systems have joined ACLM’s Health Systems Council, a collaborative learning community of health systems that have actively begun integrating lifestyle medicine into its programs.
  • ACLM’s Corporate Roundtable has more than 40 members.

A lifestyle medicine approach to population care has the potential to arrest the decades-long rise in the prevalence of chronic conditions and their burdensome costs. Patient and provider satisfaction often results from a lifestyle medicine approach, which strongly aligns the field with the Quintuple Aim of better health outcomes, lower cost, improved patient satisfaction, improved provider well-being, and advancement of health equity, in addition to its alignment with planetary health. Lifestyle medicine is the foundation for a redesigned, value-based and equitable healthcare delivery system, leading to whole person health.

ABOUT ACLM–The American College of Lifestyle Medicine is the nation’s medical professional society advancing lifestyle medicine as the foundation for a redesigned, value-based and equitable healthcare delivery system, leading to whole person health. ACLM educates, equips, empowers and supports its members through quality, evidence-based education, certification and research to identify and eradicate the root cause of chronic disease, with a clinical outcome goal of health restoration as opposed to disease management.

Author Joseph D. Pianka, MD’s new book “It’s All in Your Head” is an incredible tool for navigating the complex world of health and fitness in the “new normal”

News Image

Joseph D. Pianka, MD, a board-certified practicing gastroenterologist and devoted husband and father, has completed his new book “It’s All in Your Head”: an intuitive and helpful introspective on how one can understand poor health habits and building self-motivation to stick to a fitness and health lifestyle change.

Writes Pianka, “Despite numerous personal limitations and an insanely hectic career, I happen to be a physician with a fascination regarding fitness and nutrition. The combination has provided me with insight allowing me to achieve and maintain not only my own fitness goals, many beyond initial expectation, but also the opportunity and privilege to guide numerous patients in achieving the same. My method revolves around the fundamental concept that before you can optimally build things up, you sometimes need to break them down. This includes potentially negative behaviors acquired early in life we often cling to as adults which create comfort zones but can ultimately hold us back from living the best lives we can. In doing so, we in essence identify the puzzle pieces of our evolving life picture that no longer fit, enabling us to replace them with newly discovered, better fitting ones, and allowing creation of a new image consistent with our own ideals as opposed to those defined by others or formed by previous misconceptions. There is nothing more powerfully motivating than the enlightenment that comes with this type of self-discovery and appreciation. Once achieved, an eternal inspiration flame with an unlimited energy source is ignited allowing fitness dreams to not only become, but remain a reality. Combined with learning the fundamental principles of metabolism, nutrition, and exercise physiology, one is provided the essential tools to not only navigate, but comprehend and personalize any existing diet or fitness program with consistency and efficiency as opposed to ending up on dead end streets and endless merry-go-rounds of failure always searching for the next best thing. It may have taken a pandemic for some of us to realize how fragile and precious our lives actually are, the need to protect our health which is by far our most valuable commodity, and make some important changes to ensure not only a “new” but a “better” normal to come, but now that the worst days are gone, let’s realize we have one life, go boldly forward, and blaze on.

Published by Page Publishing, Joseph D. Pianka, MD’s perceptive writings are aimed at helping readers comprehend why one might have struggled and failed in the past while on a fitness journey, and how those same struggles can be overcome. Specifically, Pianka hopes to provide enlightenment on one of the worst health crisis facing America, namely obesity, which has only become exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic.

Readers who wish to experience this poignant work can purchase “It’s All in Your Head” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

First Dollar Launches Virtual Card to Secure and Streamline Healthcare Payments

Virtual cards only exist virtually, and their technology masks account information during transactions. Like plastic cards, virtual cards can be used to make online or in-person purchases (where providers accept Apple and Google Pay).

First Dollar, the health wallet for modern, member-first plans, announced today the launch of their Virtual Card feature. With the Virtual Card feature, First Dollar partners can quickly distribute funds to their members who now have immediate access to their funds to make qualified medical purchases and payments. First Dollar’s Virtual Card is currently live for all Piermont Bank accounts created after April 7.

Physical plastic cards can cost as much as $3-5 per card to distribute to members. On the other hand, virtual cards offer up to 95% cost savings with same-day availability. And no virtual cards will end up in a landfill. Virtual cards only exist virtually, and their technology masks account information during transactions. Like plastic cards, virtual cards can be used to make online or in-person purchases (where providers accept Apple and Google Pay).

“Healthcare emergencies happen at the worst of times with no warning. People deserve a way to access their hard-earned funds immediately, so we created a streamlined solution,” says Jason Bornhorst, CEO and co-founder of First Dollar. “Not only does First Dollar’s Virtual Card make navigating healthcare easier, we’re also eliminating wait time, reducing waste and protecting cardholders from fraud.”

Healthcare continues to be one of the most vulnerable areas for data breaches. Virtual cards are also an important tool for helping make healthcare technology more secure. Their technology masks account information during transactions, protecting both users and employers. According to HIPAA Journal’s December 2021 Healthcare Data Breach Report, 712 healthcare data breaches were reported in 2021 and nearly 3 million patient records were exposed or disclosed without permission, setting a new record for healthcare data breaches.

Third-party administrators (TPAs) and health plans have millions of dollars in plastic cards in circulation, making benefit adjustments costly. Virtual cards allow TPAs and plans to make adjustments as members’ needs change. Switching vendors for tax-advantaged accounts can put plans and members in a bind as members wait for their new cards to arrive in the mail. Virtual cards help health plans and TPAs mitigate this transition pain point. First Dollar will continue to offer TPAs and health plans both virtual and physical cards according to their needs.

About First Dollar

First Dollar is the health wallet for modern, member-driven plans. We power software-defined benefits that people love to use. From HSAs and FSAs to prepaid grocery and Rx programs, our payments infrastructure supports tax-advantaged accounts, supplemental benefits, and whatever you dream up next.

Mental Health Center of Denver Launches New Virtual Therapy Service & Introduces New Name: WellPower

“It’s fitting that our first announcement as WellPower is to introduce TherapyDirect, our new, free virtual service. Same-day counseling is just a click away and is a new way we are powering the pursuit of well-being in Denver as WellPower,” said Carl Clark, M.D., WellPower president & CEO.

Mental Health Center of Denver introduced a new virtual therapy service today and announced it has changed its name from Mental Health Center of Denver to WellPower. The name change was made to reflect the nonprofit organization’s expanded services and to promote the vital connection between a person’s mental health and overall well-being.

“For more than 30 years, our team has delivered science-backed, compassionate care as Denver’s community mental health center. Our work today has evolved and encompasses so much more than what a traditional mental health center offers,” said WellPower President and CEO Carl Clark, MD. “It’s fitting that our first announcement as WellPower is to introduce TherapyDirect, our new, free virtual service. Same-day counseling is just a click away and is a new way we are powering the pursuit of well-being in Denver as WellPower.”

Nationwide, one in five people experience a mental health challenge in any given year, yet only 40 percent of people who need help access it. WellPower is working to close this gap by meeting people where they are and offering innovative approaches – like TherapyDirect – to treat mental illness and support better well-being.

With TherapyDirect, metro Denver residents ages 18 and older can access a WellPower counselor, schedule up to three free visits when support is needed most and get follow-up recommendations and referrals. Individuals can sign-up online Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at wellpower.org/therapydirect. Therapists and peer-based support counselors are available for full 55-minute sessions and are trained in intervention care, ensuring each session is impactful. TherapyDirect is easy to access from any personal technology device or can be used from kiosks around the Denver community.

TherapyDirect enables WellPower to meet people onscreen more quickly. Clinicians continue to offer in-person care and work in the community, in schools, shelters, churches and courtrooms. They ride alongside police and paramedics to reach people who need help. WellPower welcomes infants, children, teens, adults and families to its 35 locations and on screen.

“In 2019, we began a rebranding effort because the world had changed dramatically since our inception three decades ago. The pandemic has only accelerated these changes and updating our brand and offering new services like TherapyDirect will help us meet the rapidly increasing need for care that is stretching capacity for behavioral healthcare nationwide,” noted Clark.

WellPower’s commitment to well-being is also evident in its recently announced “Living Wage Initiative,” which set a minimum hourly rate of $24.04 per hour for all employees, regardless of part- or full-time status. This equates to a minimum of $50,000 annually for full time employees. Adjustments were made to bring the average pay for each job into the 60th percentile of market rate, not just among community mental health centers but across all of health care.

“While our name and look have changed, we are the same organization made up of the same people who are deeply committed to serving our community in person and online,” concluded Clark.

Notes on the Name Change –

  • Mental Health Center of Denver website URL changed to: wellpower.org. The original website will automatically direct visitors to the new site.
  • WellPower signage is being installed at all locations and communication has been sent to all people served by WellPower.
  • WellPower’s mission remains the same: Enriching lives and minds by focusing on strengths and well-being.

About WellPower

We know the pursuit to live, feel and be well looks different for each person. At WellPower, we power the pursuit of well-being by supporting and promoting the vital connection between a person’s mental health and overall well-being. SPIRE Welcomes Four-Time All-American and WNBA Champion Candice Wiggins as Director and Head Coach of Women’s Basketball

Candice Wiggins - SPIRE Academy

Candice Wiggins – SPIRE Academy

I see my program being home to a very healthy, competitive environment, with like-minded individuals who share a common passion for the beloved sport of basketball.

Since the announcement earlier this year of a new women’s basketball program coming to the international athletic academy, SPIRE accepted numerous applications for the role of Director and Head Coach to lead the way. One application stood out from the rest; former Stanford Cardinal and WNBA champion, Candice Wiggins. The four-time All-American will be joining SPIRE to help build and lead the women’s basketball academy in Geneva.

Wiggins is a well-recognized name in women’s basketball, boasting a decorated career on the court in both the college and professional ranks. A prominent scorer, Wiggins’ collegiate basketball experience at Stanford includes being ranked second in career points in school history and third in Pac-12 history. Alongside her impressive collegiate basketball career, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Stanford.

Wiggins went on to play in the WNBA for eight seasons, which included stints with the Tulsa Shock, New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx. In 2008, she was named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year and won a WNBA championship in 2011 with the Lynx.

She boasts international professional basketball experience as well, playing in Israel, Greece, Spain and Turkey. Wiggins has worked and coached in AAU and high school basketball since she retired from her professional basketball career.

What drew her to SPIRE was the opportunity to lead and create a new women’s basketball program that essentially revolutionizes an approach to both training and competition. Wiggins explains, “It is a position that allows me to serve a sport and a community that has given me so much on all levels, both domestically and internationally: high school, college and professionally.”

SPIRE’s Director of Basketball, Jeff Javorek, is looking forward to working with Wiggins. “Candice is a huge addition to the SPIRE family. She has a great vision and strategy to help launch and grow the SPIRE women’s basketball program. The success she has had in her high school, college and professional playing experience will help shape all of the young women that will come through our program.” Javorek adds, “We will be a top destination for young women who want to learn and develop from Candice. She is very passionate, intelligent and hard-working and is excited about giving back to the sport that has done so much for her.”

Wiggins sees big potential in SPIRE’s women’s basketball, saying, “I see the future of women’s basketball at SPIRE as a destination for women to become the most dynamic versions of themselves as student athletes, with the world class facilities and resources to enable injury prevention and mental health, in my opinion, the two biggest factors relating to player development. I see my program being home to a very healthy, competitive environment, with like-minded individuals who share a common passion for the beloved sport of basketball.”

The addition of Wiggins to the SPIRE coaching team is part of their commitment to placing more women in leadership roles within the academy. Along with recently hired Molly McColloch as Assistant Swim Coach and a soon-to-be-named Assistant Track & Field Coach, SPIRE continues to lead the way when it comes to having a diverse and inclusive leadership team.

Wiggins will host the first women’s basketball camp at SPIRE will be on Thursday, June 23rd and is open to girls from ages 9 to 17. The clinic will cover the fundamental skills and competition drills that will highlight the teaching and instruction that will be available full-time for those who join the Academy. GOLFFOREVER Signs World-Number-One Golfer Scottie Scheffler as Brand Ambassador

Scottie Scheffler

“It’s been an unbelievable ride these past few months and part of my success is no doubt due to the hard work I’ve put in with GOLFFOREVER. I respect GOLFFOREVER’s mission of helping all golfers improve their bodies and play their best with the same scientific approach as mine,” said Scheffler.

GOLFFOREVER – the leading at-home golf fitness training system that helps golfers play without limits – is proud to announce a new partnership with world-No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler.

The newly-minted Masters champion, who leads the 2022 FEDEX Cup Standings with nearly twice as many points as his closest chaser, has won four times on the PGA TOUR since he began using GOLFFOREVER’s groundbreaking training system that pairs the first-ever multi-use golf fitness and warmup tool with video-streaming routines for flexibility, speed, power and injury recovery in the GOLFFOREVER app. Scheffler will represent the brand by appearing in GOLFFOREVER video content and advertisements, using the GOLFFOREVER Training System in a similar capacity to how he uses it in his own daily routines.

Considering the authentic relationship between Scheffler and GOLFFOREVER already in place, as well as Scheffler’s well-earned trust in key GOLFFOREVER contributor, Dr. Troy Van Biezen – a top PGA Tour chiropractor and trainer with whom Scheffler has worked over the past 10 years – the announcement of an official partnership is a natural one for both parties.

“It’s been an unbelievable ride these past few months and part of my success is no doubt due to the hard work I’ve put in with GOLFFOREVER. It’s a tool and approach that is critical to my preparation for the PGA Tour, and I respect GOLFFOREVER’s mission of helping all golfers improve their bodies and play their best with the same scientific approach as mine. I’m proud to be their ambassador and excited for the relationship ahead,” said Scheffler.

Dr. Van Biezen, a marquee instructor within the GOLFFOREVER app, has worked with top players on the PGA Tour for the past 20 years like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Zach Johnson. He introduced Scheffler to the GOLFFOREVER product during its soft-launch in November, and the pair have since developed a variety of pre-round warmups, flexibility routines and strength workouts that Scheffler follows religiously, including during the week of his three-stroke victory at Augusta National.

“To say we’re excited about this incredible partnership with Scottie is an understatement,” said GOLFFOREVER Founder and CEO, Dr. Jeremy James. “On top of him being a person of such high character and a hard-working golfer who personifies our mission, it’s an honor for GOLFFOREVER to have played a part in his meteoric rise to World No. 1 over the past four months. We look forward to a long partnership ahead and will continue to serve the world’s best players like Scottie, and all golfers, who want to improve and perform their best.”

Added GOLFFOREVER Managing Director Jon Levy:

“Anyone who knows this game understands that any slight advantage PGA Tour players can get over their competition can mean the difference between winning and missing cuts. We’re honored Scottie chose to train with our new system last fall, and that he continues to prepare his body and his game with it on a nearly daily basis. This opportunity not only shines a spotlight on what elite players like him to do to maximize their potential, it will help all golfers learn just how much they can improve their game with GOLFFOREVER.”

The 25-year-old Scheffler joins GOLFFOREVER’s original PGA Tour ambassador, Justin Leonard – whose career is transitioning to the PGA Tour Champions this summer – in a capacity that illustrates the versatility of GOLFFOREVER’s products helping golfers of any age or skill level.

“Scottie leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of excellence,” said the 12-time PGA Tour winner, Leonard. “His belief in GOLFFOREVER is proof that our training system is beneficial to golfers of all ages and abilities, whether it’s the No. 1-ranked player in the world or the weekend golfer trying to gain a few yards and stay out of pain.”

About Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler earned his first four PGA Tour titles in a span of six starts during the 2022 season, winning the WM Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational and World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play and his first-career major championship at The Masters. He moved to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career following the third victory, becoming the 25th player in the OWGR era to reach the No. 1 position (est. 1986). After a stellar junior career, he played college golf at the University of Texas from 2014 to 2018. While there, he helped the team win three Big 12 championships and was named Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year in 2015.

GOLFFOREVER is a comprehensive, smart at-home training system that takes a science-based approach to maximizing golfers’ performance by improving flexibility, core strength, balance and rotational power. The first golf-specific home training program to embrace the approach of home exercise equipment paired with streaming instruction, GOLFFOREVER takes it one step further by customizing each golfer’s exercise routines just for them, based on a proprietary strength and flexibility test users take when starting. The result is a product and program that is safe and highly effective for any golfer. With exercise routines designed by some of the top PGA Tour trainers and orthopedic experts in the U.S., GOLFFOREVER users can expect to swing and perform their best – with a pain-free body – for as long as they play the game.
