Ivey Engineering Awards $1,000 Scholarship to University of Michigan-Flint Senior Lydia Powers

Lydia Power is IEI's 2021 scholarship winner

Lydia Powers is the ninth winner of the IEI scholarship essay contest

I’ve always enjoyed math and science, but I also want a career where I can apply my passion for languages.

Ivey Engineering, Inc., (IEI), an engineering consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Lydia Powers of Swartz Creek, Michigan, is the winner of the 2021 $1,000 scholarship essay contest. Currently a senior at the University of Michigan-Flint, Powers is a mechanical engineering major with a minor in Mandarin Chinese.

Originally an architecture major, Powers changed her major after realizing engineering would be a better fit for her desired career goals. “I’ve always enjoyed math and science, but I also want a career where I can apply my passion for languages,” said Powers.

She currently works as a co-op student at an automobile supplier company, which works with a branch in China. “I would like to continue working at the company and use my degree to design and test automobile parts,” explained Powers. “My goal is also to travel to China for testing and to contribute to cross-cultural communication.”

Powers competed with more than 100 other college students from the United States. Applicants were required to write an 800- to 1,000-word essay on one of several topics and were judged for creativity and originality.

Powers’ winning essay discusses five types of plumbing jobs that homeowners should leave to a professional plumber. One type of job she says a homeowner shouldn’t attempt is unclogging sewer backups.

“Although many DIY sites suggest using a drain cleaner or even Coca Cola to clear your pipes, these can actually lead to more damage by corroding them,” Powers explained in her essay. “In the case of a sewer backup, you should call a professional who has the necessary skills, tools, and PPE to safely take care of the situation,” she said.

“Lydia wrote a well organized and impressively written essay,” said Bill Ivey, vice-president of IEI. “And you can tell she did some research. Her essay dived deep into some of the plumbing repairs that homeowners should never attempt on their own,” he added.

For Powers, a college education provides more than just a degree. “It gives me the opportunity to learn something that I am passionate about and would not otherwise be able to learn on my own,” she said.

“We’re excited to see where Lydia will go with her engineering degree and wish her the best in her career goals,” said Ivey.

Overall, the IEI scholarship program, which began in 2017, has awarded $9,000 to university students of diverse majors. Any potential or current college or university undergraduate student within the United States is able to apply for the scholarship. The next deadline for essay submissions is May 1, 2022. For contest requirements or for more information about the scholarship, visit IEI’s scholarship web page.

Major Esports Organization Dignitas to Launch NFTs and Digital Playing Cards on DigitalBits Network

NFTs are the logical next step for esports teams, and we are excited to be leading this emerging wave in the gaming industry,

The DigitalBits blockchain has been selected as the protocol on which a series of NFT collections will launch for the world-renowned esports organization Dignitas. Zytara Labs, a full-service NFT production studio, will also be launching its NFT platform on the DigitalBits network in Q3 2021.

Zytara Labs has been named as the official digital playing card and NFT partner for Dignitas. As part of their multi-year partnership, Zytara Labs and Dignitas will release a series of Dignitas collections in the form of NFTs, digital playing cards, collectibles, and more on the DigitalBits blockchain. These unique digital assets will feature the Dignitas’ rebrand that took place earlier this year, an homage to the original Dignitas design, and will commemorate players, events, and moments, as well as provide exclusive access to new and exciting activations for Dignitas fans.

“NFTs are the logical next step for esports teams, and we are excited to be leading this emerging wave in the gaming industry,” said John Spiher, Vice President of Partnerships at Dignitas, “We look forward to working alongside Zytara Labs to create innovative fan opportunities to collect and trade our new playing cards and other NFTs.”

Zytara Labs has quickly established itself as a leader within the NFT industry, servicing a plethora of musical artists, pro-athletes, major brands, and other well-known individuals and organizations in the creation of their unique digital items.

Functioning as an end-to-end NFT partner, Zytara Labs provides both technical and creative aspects of NFT strategy and production, producing the highest quality, unique digital creations. Notably, Zytara Labs supported Floyd Mayweather’s “Legacy” NFT series that preceded his record-breaking bout with YouTube sensation Logan Paul, Dole Foods and David Datuna’s “Taking A Bite Out of Hunger” campaign, as well as the recent collaboration between world renowned artists Richard Orlinski and Ozuna. Mayweather’s NFT collection continues to hold the Top Seller spot on Rarible over the last 30 days since the successful launch of the collection.

“We are excited to be working with an innovative team such as Dignitas to create a series of NFT collections and seasonal player cards for fans. We’ve only begun to see a small part of how NFTs can be leveraged to engage fans and provide a closer connection to their favorite team and players,” said Zytara Founder and CEO Al Burgio.

The DigitalBits Project was originally launched in March 2018, with the vision of revolutionizing the utility of consumer digital assets. With Mainnet 2.0 going live in February 2021, a number of significant upgrades were introduced that expanded the scope of the project to consider rapidly emerging asset categories such as NFTs and fan tokens. With issues surrounding Ethereum’s scalability and environmental impact continuing to persist, users and brands are actively searching for alternatives that provide superior performance while reducing their carbon footprint. NFT functionality on DigitalBits enables the deployment of high-performance applications in which NFTs can be minted and utilized without subjecting users to long wait times and high fees, while significantly reducing energy consumption and emissions.

The DigitalBits Foundation (formerly the XDB Foundation), the nonprofit spearheading development of the DigitalBits protocol, has been aggressively expanding its NFT ecosystem, having recently partnered with Elitium and NFTY Labs. Notably, Elitium, alongside another DigitalBits ecosystem partner, GDA Capital, hosted NFT BAZL, an innovative physical and digital art event that took place within the auspicious Temple House in South Beach Miami.

“NFTs have triggered the emergence of a new paradigm within digital assets,” says Michael Gord, DigitalBits Foundation Managing Director. “We have yet to see the full extent of how NFTs will revolutionize player and fan engagement, and the esports industry is well positioned to demonstrate this.”

About DigitalBits Foundation

The DigitalBits Foundation (formerly the XDB Foundation) is a non-profit organization focused on assisting DigitalBits and related technologies. The DigitalBits Foundation’s core objectives include: supporting the innovation and adoption of the DigitalBits blockchain and the use of cryptocurrency in enhancing the consumer experience and corporate social responsibility initiatives, shaping commercial standards and requests for technical expansion, growing the DigitalBits community through the inclusion of diverse regions; providing accountability and sustainability practices; and facilitating partnerships and ecosystem development.

Small Town Civic “Heroes” To Be Recognized, Honored by CivicPlus

Every day, we see the vital role these civic volunteers play in their communities. We not only want to recognize them but also want to encourage others to step up and support their municipalities by volunteering to fill these important public service positions.

The nation’s top 100 small town public service volunteers will again be recognized and honored for their service in the second annual Small Town America Civic Volunteer Award (STACVA) program. The nationwide program will open for nominations beginning July 15. STACVA recognizes extraordinary contributions by public service and public safety volunteers in small towns and counties with populations of 25,000 or less.

In addition to recognizing these hometown heroes, STACVA is designed to spotlight the growing decline in the availability of citizens to fill critical local government roles, such as county boards and city councils, volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and the many advisory committees that support other key local government functions.

STAVCA is sponsored by CivicPlus®, the nation’s leading provider of technology solutions that enable local governments to optimize the experience they deliver when interacting with citizens. The program is co-sponsored by the National Association of Counties, National Volunteer Fire Council, National Association of Towns and Townships, Main Street America, and Points of Light. Representatives of these organizations are serving on the STACVA Advisory Team. The Barton Russell Group (http://www.BartonRussell.com), the nation’s leading small town and rural America consultancy, has again been retained to administer and judge the 2021 program.

Municipalities and counties represented by the top 100 nominees will qualify for a free volunteer management module that can be integrated with their website to help engage, recruit, track, and retain community volunteers. They will also receive 12 months of free support services for the module from CivicPlus. Localities represented by the top three national STACVA winners will also receive cash awards of $20,000, $10,000, and $5,000, respectively.

“Every day, we see the vital role these civic volunteers play in their communities,” said Brian Rempe, CivicPlus Chief Executive Officer. “We not only want to recognize them but also want to encourage others to step up and support their municipalities by volunteering to fill these important public service positions.”

Local government representatives may nominate citizens or citizen organizations for the Small Town America Civic Volunteer Award using an online application that can be found on the program’s website (http://www.civic-volunteer.com). Nominators are asked to describe their candidate’s compelling story of local volunteerism and its positive impact on their community. The award program will launch on July 15, with applications due no later than October 15. Winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held in November.

Last year’s national winner, Becky Ketchum of Norridgewock, Maine, is the consummate example of a small town civic volunteer. She is president of the Norridgewock Historical Society and is, or has been, active in the Village Improvement Society, Somerset Grange, Town Planning Board, Town Cemetery Committee, Budget Committee and is a Norridgewock Library Trustee. Most recently, Becky served on the committee leading a community revitalization effort.

Brian Shoemaker of the Gilt Edge, Tennessee volunteer fire department was the second-place winner of the 2020 STACVA program. After joining the fire department in 2013 and completing basic firefighter training, he enrolled at the local community college where he earned national and state certifications in basic and advanced EMT, then earned an associate’s degree and ultimately completed a Bachelor of Science degree in fire service administration. He now volunteers at the community college as an EMT instructor. Remarkably, Brian also serves as a town council member and vice mayor for Gilt Edge.

Tammy Hutchinson, from Hartwell, Georgia, was the third-place winner. She has played a leading role on the Town’s Main Street committee for the past decade and has served the community on a long list of volunteer projects and fundraisers for most of her life.

“Volunteers like Becky, Brian, and Tammy are exactly the kind of selfless servants we hoped to spotlight when we launched the Small Town America Civic Volunteer Award last year,” said Rempe. “I can’t wait to see the wonderful stories we will uncover this year.”

New Study Links Employee Sentiment to Security Posture

News Image

Cybersecurity culture by industry, department and organization size

If employees aren’t engaged in security training and best practices, it limits the security team’s ability to effectively mitigate security threats. Understanding where your security culture is today is an essential first step to build an effective cybersecurity strategy.

Infosec, the leading cybersecurity education company, today released findings from its new research report, Cybersecurity Culture – Quantified. Designed to assess employee perceptions and sentiments towards cybersecurity best practices and policies, the study revealed a significant variation of security culture by industry, department and organization size.

A strong cybersecurity culture, an organization’s collective awareness, attitudes and behaviors toward security, is based on employees willingly embracing security best practices both professionally and personally. Accordingly, ISACA and CMMI Institute research has shown organizations with strong cybersecurity cultures experience increased visibility into potential threats, reduced cyber incidents and greater post-attack resilience among other measurable benefits.

However, cybersecurity culture has historically been seen as an abstract concept and difficult to quantify. To help overcome this challenge, Infosec developed a framework and survey to classify cybersecurity culture and systematically measure results, allowing organizations to turn this important security variable into a data-driven element in their cybersecurity strategy.

“Our goal with this study was to understand the current state of security culture and uncover employee sentiments impacting security behaviors. The results show employee beliefs toward cybersecurity vary widely, which can have a major impact on an organization’s security posture.” said Jack Koziol, CEO and founder at Infosec. “If employees aren’t engaged in security training and best practices, it limits the security team’s ability to effectively mitigate security threats. Understanding where your security culture is today is an essential first step to build an effective cybersecurity strategy.”

Quantifying the Current State of Security Culture

To conduct the study, Infosec surveyed over 1,000 professionals across dozens of industries to measure employee attitudes and perceptions towards cybersecurity and the organization’s security practices among five cybersecurity culture domains (Confidence, Engagement, Outcomes, Responsibility, Trust).

Results revealed unique cultural strengths and weaknesses based on respondents’ organization size, department and industry. Large organizations with 50,000+ employees, IT and security departments, and law firms and legal services reported the strongest cybersecurity cultures, and small organizations with less than 100 employees, distribution departments and agriculture reported the weakest cybersecurity cultures.

Other key findings on employee attitudes and perceptions around cybersecurity include:

  •     74% believe a cybersecurity issue would be taken very or extremely seriously if reported at their workplace
  •     66% believe they would face very or extremely serious consequences if they caused a cybersecurity incident at their workplace
  •     23% feel complying with their organization’s cybersecurity policies and best practices interferes with their ability to do their job very often or extremely often

Organizations of all sizes can use the findings included in this report as a reference point for their own cybersecurity culture or to focus their efforts on specific departments or cybersecurity culture domains. The study follows Infosec’s recent launch of their Infosec IQ Cybersecurity Culture Survey that allows security awareness and training managers to analyze and measure employee attitudes and perceptions towards security practices, policies and training strategies.

iPost puts the power of email marketing into the hands of the franchise through multi-tiered accounts that eliminate fragmentation, allow for collaboration among all tiers of the franchise model, and enable franchisees to access and use their data and content. Yet franchises maintain ultimate control; They can regulate the look and feel of each email sent, lock and unlock content as needed, or push content to subaccounts with one stroke. It is the best of both worlds – empowering the franchisee while protecting the franchise.

“Now, through our elite membership in the IFPG, we are excited to help both the franchisor and franchisee with their email marketing initiatives that we are offering a free, no-obligation program for all IFPG members called eValuate,” says O’Neill.
