Nostalgia has made quite the comeback, and the Internet is no exception. So it’s delightful that the most familiar innovations of email and LISTSERV® – two of the major IT inventions still thriving – celebrate key milestones in 2021.

The comprehensive story of how we arrived at the current and ever-evolving tech-driven communication space of today is nothing short of astounding – a reflection of human ingenuity, determination and a vision of a more connected society.

Ray Tomlinson’s 1971 invention of email using the @ sign to separate the username and destination server, “user@host” launched the first email network, ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).

Fast-forward a decade and BITNET, aka, “Because It’s Time Network” is introduced. Tim Berners-Lee hadn’t invented the World Wide Web yet. But people kept the networks of the mid-1980s busy despite minimal bandwidth. Email lists existed on LISTSERV@BITNIC as of 1984, but they required manual administration.

With the popularity of mailing lists growing and all lists being administered manually, the process became so slow and cumbersome that it threatened the viability of mailing lists altogether. Eric Thomas, then an engineering student in Paris, was determined to keep mailing lists alive, so he invented LISTSERV software to automate mailing lists once and for all.

Thomas created the first version of LISTSERV, called “Revised LISTSERV” at the time, in June 1986. Email groups and newsletters as we know them today began.

In Eric Thomas’s words:

“My goal was simply to create a tool that would allow mailing lists to prosper while making life easier for subscribers and list owners. It was a simple idea whose success exceeded all my expectations. Sometimes you set about solving a small problem, and later on you realize that you have actually solved a big problem.”

From then on, the Internet culture of communications and knowledge exchange has been able to flourish. And flourish it did.

Three and a half decades of continuous development later, LISTSERV® software and its SaaS version are widely used by all types of organizations around the world. LISTSERV lists, from discussion and support groups for people with rare diseases to company newsletters and university or government announcement services, continue to help people and organizations communicate, collaborate and connect.

Moshe Barak, who now uses LISTSERV for environmental activism, shares some nostalgia from his earliest days as a 35-year university LISTSERV administrator:

orgvue Appoints Matthew Stewart as Chief Product Officer


orgvue, the leading organizational design and planning software platform, today announces Matthew Stewart as Chief Product Officer. Stewart’s appointment comes on the heels of the company’s continued global growth and expansion. In 2020, orgvue’s North American subscription revenue grew 89%, while the business added 53 customers to its roster.

Stewart will oversee orgvue’s ongoing product growth and evolution as it transitions towards an end-to-end organizational design and workforce planning solution. He is also charged with fine-tuning orgvue’s user experience to accommodate an increasingly broad array of user personas, ensuring the product supports new, dynamic organizational structures, such as agile and matrix operating models, and ensuring the platform seamlessly integrates into the broader HCM ecosystem.

Stewart brings with him a wealth of product and marketing experience. He joins orgvue from Experian, where he was SVP of Global Product Management. While with Experian, he led the scaling of the PowerCurve decisioning business, achieving 5X growth behind key initiatives such as relaunching legacy products onto the new platform, transitioning the business to cloud-based, SaaS solutions, and introducing an industry-leading user experience (UX) during his tenure. He also spent nearly ten years at dunnhumbyUSA, where he was SVP, Strategic Marketing and Product Management. Stewart holds an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill.

Litmus Expands Partnership with Google Cloud to Power Edge-to-Cloud Smart Factory Solutions

Our partnership with Litmus will enable organizations to quickly put factory data to work, seamlessly integrating with our analytics, machine learning and AI capabilities to improve manufacturing operations across the entire enterprise.

Litmus today announced an expansion of its strategic partnership with Google Cloud to offer an integrated edge-to-cloud solution for smart manufacturing. As part of the partnership, Google Cloud will incorporate Litmus’ industrial edge computing platform into its suite of smart factory solutions.

The Litmus platform is purpose-built for collecting, processing, and analyzing data at the edge from industrial machines. Machine-level data can be quickly integrated with the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for analytics, AI, and machine learning enabling high-value manufacturing use cases and fast time-to-value for customers.
