Innovation Metrics for R&D and Product Development Continue To Grow: Must-Have Innovation KPIs, R&D Spending Precision KPIs, and Product Design Quality KPIs

KPI, KPIs, Metrics, Measures, Performance Indicators, Performance Measures, Performance Measurement, Awards

Is your company great at measuring corporate and program innovation performance?

Helped me turn my ideas on metrics from fuzzy to specific and actionable. R&D can be a company’s biggest discretionary expense. We had better achieve a proactive ability to measure impact and efficiency. — VP, Global Programs & Portfolios, Invitrogen Corp.

9 KPIs That Capture Innovation Performance

The 9 KPIs in this program measure “overall corporate performance,” above and across the details of individual project investments and cost center departments. All nine are all strong candidates for innovation leader and manager dashboards. These 9 KPIs come very close to capturing the collective business and financial performance of investments in R&D and product development across most industries.

Currently there is a tussle going on between the accounting profession, the SEC, and public corporations regarding Non-GAAP KPIs. CEOs and CFOs are displaying metrics such as “% New Product Sales” and “Return On Innovation” alongside the required GAAP metrics in their 10K and Annual Report, and related footnotes. Companies are increasingly creating Non-GAAP metrics that suit their needs. The SEC argues that these “creative metrics” mislead analysts and investors. Yet, it is these Non-GAAP metrics that analysts and investors seek to find as it gives them an analytical edge over GAAP metrics alone. Eight of the nine metrics in this program are Non-GAAP metrics.

8 Metrics That Quantify R&D Spending Performance

The 8 KPIs in this program are wide-ranging, from internal C-Level and program measures to indicators used by Wall Street. Each KPI employs R&D Spending in its calculation in some way. The program covers investments for programs, spending allocation between and across business units, upper and lower limits to spending, corporate performance, and metrics that use R&D Spending in relation to stock price and market capitalization. This unique program involves significant secondary research focused on measuring R&D spending performance.

Years go by between the time a decision to develop a product is made and the time that commercial results are measurable in the marketplace. However, it is that initial decision to spend money on R&D and/or Product Development that generates those market results (or not) years later. R&D Spending is the common thread across all other development activities. Big data correlations can now codify the business and financial results across the 8-15+ years that go by from first spend to actual ROI. In the years ahead, with many more companies using big data analytics across longer durations of time, executives will be increasingly guided by these data as they make spending decisions and allocations to both new and existing initiatives. And, how much total money to spend each year.

7 Measures To Value Product Design

The 7 KPIs in this program focus on measures that characterize or quantify good design in the eyes of customers and users. While some measures also have utility for internal purposes such as product quality, reliability, and cost, this program centers on how customers, users, markets, and the investor community regard the products and their value.

Great product design, inclusive of Customer Experience Design (Cx), User Interface Design (UI), User Experience Design (UX), Industrial Design (ID), Sustainable Design, Digital Design, and other techniques, is now proven to measurably improve the ROI on products. And, if design is elevated to become a true company competency, it can boost corporate valuations to levels that are twice that of competitors. These seven measures critically examine the contributions of product design, from inception through early commercialization. Together, these measures enable a hard look at product design quality, performance, and financial impact in our new age of near continuous design evolution.

GGI’s Innovation Leadership Mini-Series Videos Are Now Available for Corporate License: Breakthrough Innovation, Product Design, Smart R&D Spending, Metrics

10 Breakthrough Innovation Techniques

10 Breakthrough Innovation Techniques

Professional, well structured, well thought out. Thought provoking and content rich. Plenty of take-aways. — R&D Director, Millipore

In an economic uptick, there are more resources to deploy. Spending goes up. More things are possible. Alternatives increase. How do you choose wisely?

Out-innovating the competition, smart R&D decisions and spending, and distinct value-enhancing product design and packaging are three topics that get a lot of time in the board room and offices of corporate leaders. We address each of these subjects with a three-hour Mini-Series consisting of three one-hour programs.

The Innovation Performance 10-9-8 Series

10 Techniques That Achieve Breakthrough Innovation: This program focuses on ten differentiable techniques that have evolved since Clayton Christensen first coined “Disruptive Innovation” in the 1990s. These ten techniques are all disruptive in some way across the spectrum of disruption: Breakthrough, Disruptive, Radical, Transformational, New-To-The-World, New-To-The-Industry, and Next Generation.

9 KPIs That Capture Innovation Performance: This program focuses on nine Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that together capture the lion’s share of overall innovation performance. These nine KPIs span investment levels, innovation levels, execution ability, productivity, and overall business performance.

8 Practices That Boost Corporate Innovation: This program focuses on eight processes, tools, and techniques that are known to increase innovation creativity and execution, and/or the value of investments in innovation, in corporations. Some are strategic and soft in nature, such as communication and messaging. Some are tactical, such as combining products and IP in business plans. Others are process-oriented and spur raw innovation or the early detection of errors.

The R&D Spending Performance 8-8-8 Series

8 Conditions That Impact R&D Spending Results: This program focuses on factors that will negatively impact spending and spending performance. Some of them are controllable, some are not. We discuss eight conditions ranging from spending decisions in boom and bust periods, to overspending and underspending, to the impacts of variable spending and negative events on output and productivity, that lessen output and outcomes.

8 Metrics That Quantify R&D Spending Performance: This program focuses on key performance indicators [KPIs] that have R&D spending in their calculation. The metrics range from corporate metrics that are either reported to Wall Street or used by analysts and CFOs, to measures that help to divvy-up funds across business units of different purposes and performance levels, to measures that improve the ranking of investments, to measures that can be used to modulate overspending or underspending for corporate and industry considerations.

8 Actions That Increase R&D Spending Output: This program focuses on factors that will positively influence spending and spending performance. All of them are within your control. Does your company have its arms around these? We describe eight actions ranging from good CXO behaviors, to data sciences and digital posturing, to timing new product announcements and actively competing for awards, that increase output and outcomes.

The Product Design Value 7-6-7 Plus Series

7 Ways To Create Value With Product Design: This program focuses on opportunities to design-in capabilities that will enhance the appeal and increase the value of products from their point of purchase throughout the product’s life cycle. We will discuss seven different opportunities, and quantify the size of the economic opportunity for each. The least opportunity represents a 20% increase in revenues unto itself. The several large opportunities represent upwards from 200% increases in revenue and profit from the same design effort. The Plus in this 7-6-7 Series program will touch on how miniaturization of design, next generation motors, and a couple more topics will also begin to influence product design.

6 Ways To Reap Value From Product Design: This program focuses on opportunities to increase the value of products, portfolios, and brands that have been robustly designed, or are well along to that goal. We will discuss six different opportunities, and quantify the size of the economic opportunity for each. These opportunities all have double-digit potential to increase revenues and profits, and single digit for market cap. In some cases, incremental monies will be needed to realize the augmentation potential of the design or design-leverage ability. The Plus in this 7-6-7 Series program will cull-out selected awards and recognitions for good product design, as distinguished from the multitude of award and recognition program categories existing today.

7 Measures To Value Product Design: The third program focuses on measures that characterize or quantify good design in the eyes of customers and users. While some measures also have utility for internal purposes such as product quality, reliability, and cost, this program centers on how customers, users, markets, and the investor community regard the products. We discuss seven different KPIs that range from codifying the quality and robustness of ID and UX designs, to metrics that gauge pricing gross margins and potential market value, to indexes that provide for cross-market comparisons and market cap premiums. The Plus in this 7-6-7 Series program will briefly touch on several other metrics relevant to good product design including customer satisfaction, completion rates, NPS, and others.

Licensing

Corporate Licenses are now a value at three times the single-user price. Positive actions on any of the 10-9-8, 8-8-8, and 7-6-7 group of topics can make or save tens of thousands of dollars apiece, even if only implemented once. A short license statement accompanies each video transmittal. There is nothing to sign.

FoodLogiQ Shares 2019 Year-in-Review, Cites Exponential Increase in Platform Usage and Growth

“This has been a banner year for FoodLogiQ in many ways; it’s a thrilling time to be a part of our fast-growing company.” – FoodLogiQ CEO Sean O’Leary

FoodLogiQ, the leading SaaS provider of food safety compliance, traceability, and supply chain transparency software solutions, shared an overview today of the company’s key accomplishments in 2019 in its efforts to strengthen the transparency and traceability of the global food supply chain. Among the accomplishments included hitting 100,000 supply chain locations captured in the platform, contributing to the national dialogue surrounding the FDA’s “New Era of Smarter Food Safety,” and the launch of new features to increase compliance of the more than 16,000 suppliers in the platform.

“This has been a banner year for FoodLogiQ in many ways,” says CEO Sean O’Leary. “Our customers and other platform users have leveraged FoodLogiQ Connect in amazing ways to advance the goals of food safety and whole chain traceability in 2019. With more locations, suppliers, documents, and critical tracking events in our system than ever before, it’s a thrilling time to be a part of our fast-growing company.”

Making a Global Impact

The world’s food supply chain has become extremely complex, primarily due to the ever-growing number of products, customers, channels, and geographies. Products are sourced from the farthest corners of the earth, with spices being traded from Turkey and Sri Lanka, seafood from Chili and China, and olives and avocados from Italy and Brazil, respectively. In 2019, FoodLogiQ surpassed 100,000 locations managed through the Connect platform; this represents more than 56,000 customer locations as well as over 44,000 supplier locations.

As the year comes to a close, FoodLogiQ boasts over 13,000 international supplier locations, helping bring consistency and transparency to food, no matter where it is created or consumed. FoodLogiQ Connect makes it possible for companies to increase visibility into these complicated global supply chains, providing them with the ability to track and trace every product, from the product’s source all the way to the consumer.

Food Industry Moves Toward Whole Chain Traceability

There are many drivers moving the food industry to become more transparent, and companies that embrace supply chain traceability will have a distinct competitive advantage as the industry evolves.

“FoodLogiQ Connect has become a traceability hub in 2019, with more than 25 million tracking events in our system that connect the supply chain,” says Katy Jones, FoodLogiQ’s Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer. “That number has grown by over one million events in the last month alone. That level of tracking is transformational for our customers and will only increase as we move into 2020.”

With food traceability and supply chain transparency comes better food quality management, and managing food quality incidents are a critical part of protecting consumers. Every quality incident uncovered is a step closer to supporting a safe food supply chain, and in 2019, FoodLogiQ’s customers uncovered and reported nearly 320,000 food quality incidents.

Strong Supplier Collaboration with Industry Partners

The volume of data housed within FoodLogiQ Connect illustrates the level of collaboration between supply chain partners as they work together to optimize their food safety and quality processes. Over 16,000 suppliers already onboarded to the FoodLogiQ platform have completed more than 30,000 workflows and have shared over 184,000 supplier documents.

Additional major accomplishments in 2019 include:

Launching the Supplier To-Do List: FoodLogiQ continued to elevate supplier ease-of-use for onboarding and compliance by launching the new Supplier To-do List feature consisting of to-do action items located front-and-center on their Supplier Dashboard. Since the launch, suppliers have completed more than 63,000 To-do’s that represent greater compliance with FoodLogiQ customer food safety programs.

Customer Growth in the Consumer Packaged Goods Vertical: The company announced an increasing number of CPG businesses turning to FoodLogiQ’s technology to help automate and improve their supplier engagement, traceability, case-level labeling and food safety efforts.

Hosting 2nd Annual User Group, reCONNECT 2019: Hundreds of FoodLogiQ’s customers and partners gathered in Durham, NC, to share best practices on how they are utilizing the software to advance food safety, traceability and transparency. The agenda featured keynote presentations, topical panel sessions and customer-led discussions.

Leading 3rd Meeting of FoodLogiQ Labs: FoodLogiQ gathered customers, partners and affiliated industry-leading organizations for a third session of FoodLogiQ Labs, the innovation arm of FoodLogiQ focused on emerging technologies that meet the growing needs of the food industry. The third meeting focused on the advances in RFID to support supply chain traceability.

Input into the FDA’s New Era of Smarter Food Safety: FDA officials invited FoodLogiQ to provide commentary during the remarks portion of the agency’s “New Era of Smarter Food Safety” public meeting on Monday, October 21 in Rockville, MD, which focused on strengthening the FDA’s protection of the food supply. Following the meeting, FoodLogiQ also formally submitted written comments on the initiative.

Growth in the Leadership Team: FoodLogiQ welcomed several new members to its executive leadership team in 2019. Sean O’Leary was named Chief Executive Officer at the first of the year. Maria Burch was named Vice President of Customer Success, and Tony Barbone was named Chief Revenue Officer.

Completion of a Type 2 Service Organization Control (SOC 2) Examination: After a rigorous examination, auditors issued an unqualified opinion, confirming that FoodLogiQ meets the SOC 2 standards for Security and Availability Trust Services Principles with zero exceptions listed.

“We’d like to thank all of our partners for helping drive efficient communication, standardized data usage, compliance, and consumer well-being throughout the global supply chain,” says O’Leary. “This is a time to celebrate our successes, and I’m extremely optimistic and excited about where our company will go in 2020.”

Copilot, the First Automated Customer Experience Platform for Connected Devices, Raises $5M led by JVP

Copilot, the world’s first automated customer experience platform designed for connected consumer products, today announced it has raised $5 million from the leading global venture capital firm Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP). Based out of New York City and Tel Aviv, the company is adding thousands of new devices to its platform every day and will use the new capital to expand to New York City and target new markets. Filling this much needed gap, Copilot has landed customers around the world, serving the likes of Polaroid, Safedome, Palo Alto Innovation and Brooklyness, among others.

While CRMs and similar platforms have long dominated the customer service and customer experience categories, Copilot is the first of its kind to effectively leverage data and engage consumers across smart and IoT (Internet of Things) devices. Copilot’s platform enables brands and manufacturers to better understand the behaviors and needs of consumers, and to build a thoughtful relationship with them across their connected devices. Companies that employ Copilot improve onboarding, reduce product returns, boost product ratings and open new channels of revenue, giving them a critical advantage that increases overall customer satisfaction and builds Lifetime Value.

With this initial investment, Copilot joins JVP’s diverse portfolio of growth stage companies in emerging categories such as cybersecurity, food tech, AI, computer vision, and data and analytics, among others. JVP recently announced a new partnership with Mars to fuel food tech innovation in Israel as well as with AstraZeneca in the Digital Health domain.

“Our vision is to build a more meaningful journey between customers and brands in our increasingly connected world,” said Co-Founder Tsiki Naftaly. “We’re proud to be working together with JVP, which has been the most dynamic and farsighted venture capital firm in Israel, with a global track record of helping emerging companies grow.”

“Copilot is a cutting edge company that offers yet more evidence of the dynamic entrepreneurial spirit of Israel,” said JVP Founder and Executive Chairman Erel Margalit. “The digital revolution must translate into concrete improvements in people’s lives, and Copilot can help achieve that.”

Naftaly, along with fellow Israeli Army pilot, Zvi Frank, founded Copilot in 2016 as a spinoff of leading IoT solutions provider, Zemingo, which they also founded. Between Zemingo and Copilot, Naftaly and Frank have established a robust ecosystem of support for makers of connected devices, allowing every organization between startups and Fortune 500 companies to create personal experiences for customers through its connected devices. Prior to Copilot, Frank started conference calling company, Interwise, which was sold to AT&T in 2007.

Frank and Gadi Porat, JVP partner and board member in Copilot, worked together in the past. It was therefore only natural opportunity to join forces again, this time with JVP’s investment team. “We have decided to invest in Copilot since we believe that a similar revolution made by Salesforce in the enterprise market 20 years ago, will be made by Copilot with respect to IoT and the consumer devices market through the CXM platform,” said Porat.
