Radiant Presents at the 2020 AWE Online Conference and Expo Introducing AR/VR Display Test Systems that Replicate Human Vision within Headsets

Radiant Presents at the 2020 AWE Online Conference and Expo Introducing AR/VR Display Test Systems that Replicate Human Vision within Headsets

To accurately test displays that are viewed so near to the eye, a display measurement solution must closely emulate the position, limitations, and characteristics of the human eye within the unique viewing environment of an XR headset.

Radiant Vision Systems, a leading provider of photometric imaging solutions for light and display measurement, announces that it will exhibit and speak as part of AWE (Augmented World Expo) Online, taking place May 26-29, 2020. For the first time, AWE will be held as a fully virtual event featuring both an online Conference and Expo. In addition to engaging with attendees of the live virtual Expo, Davis Bowling—member of the Radiant Vision Systems sales leadership team and liaison to the company’s augmented (AR), virtual (VR), and mixed reality (MR) customers— will present “Replicating Human Vision for Accurate Testing of AR/VR Displays” as part of the AWE Conference “XR Enablement” track. The presentation will be broadcast Wednesday, May 27, from 11:30 to 11:50 A.M. PDT, followed by a live Q&A with Bowling and members of the Radiant display test solutions team.

Near-eye displays—like those in AR, VR, and MR devices (collectively referred to as XR devices)—project virtual objects and information in close proximity to the human eye, sometimes encompassing the user’s entire field of view. This proximity not only creates immersive visual experiences, but also enhances defects like poor contrast, nonuniform brightness or color, line and pixel defects, low image clarity, and image positioning issues. Manufacturers of XR devices are tasked with ensuring defect-free virtual images, leveraging automated photometric test and measurement solutions to qualify displays and characterize their optical performance according to exacting geometries and device specifications. To accurately test displays that are viewed so near to the eye, a display measurement solution must closely emulate the position, limitations, and characteristics of the human eye within the unique viewing environment of an XR headset. During his presentation at the AWE Online Conference, Davis Bowling will describe an innovative imaging solution for in-headset near-eye display testing that replicates human vision for the most accurate evaluation of the visual experience and qualification of the integrated display.

Topics of Radiant’s AWE Online Conference presentation include:

  • Challenges of near-eye display measurement and visual quality testing
  • Important optical design features that allow imaging systems to replicate human vision within headsets for test and measurement
  • Radiant’s AR/VR display measurement system and software analysis capabilities

Davis Bowling has supported customer applications with photometric, colorimetric, and radiometric inspection systems since 1997. Manufacturers of displays and illuminated devices apply these systems, calibrated to a range of lens designs, to enable automated visual inspection within precise viewing parameters and ensure quality according to human visual perception. A member of the sales leadership team at Radiant Vision Systems, Bowling is responsible for facilitating solutions for unique customer applications worldwide—including emerging AR, VR, and MR display types and optical geometries. Bowling has a deep understanding of the technical considerations required for a successful implementation, and builds on Radiant’s success by sharing his expertise on measurement equipment and providing a consultative approach to system integration.

In addition to speaking at the Conference, members of the Radiant Vision Systems display test solutions team will engage with event attendees live from the company’s exhibitor webpage as part of the AWE Online Expo. Sphero® Announces Spin-Out of Company Six, a Startup Focused on Robotic Systems to Advance Safety, Security and Situational Awareness for those with Dangerous Jobs

News Image

“Our team is excited to build critically-needed robotic hardware and advanced software solutions that help first responders and people with dangerous jobs,” says Booth. “Our mission is to build powerful and affordable technology that we can put in the hands of as many people as possible.”

Former Sphero COO Jim Booth Joins Company Six as CEO, Paul Copioli Named New CEO of Sphero, and former CEO Paul Berberian to Become Chairman of both Companies.

Sphero, the industry leader in edtech programmable robots and STEAM-based educational tools, announced today that it has successfully completed the spin-off of Company Six into an independent company to commercialize intelligent robots and AI-based software applications for first responders, government, defense, and those who work in dangerous situations.

Company Six started as Sphero’s Public Safety Division, brought to life from Paul Berberian’s and Jim Booth’s backgrounds in military service and their passion for providing innovative tools for first responders and those who put themselves in harm’s way. By applying the experience used to bring more than 4 million robots to market at Sphero, the Company Six team believes it can create products that are not only robust and feature-rich enough for professional applications, but also affordable enough to be adopted by the majority, rather than the minority, of civilian and military personnel.

Former Sphero COO Jim Booth will lead the Company Six team as CEO, and is joined by several members of the original Sphero team.

“Our team is excited to build critically-needed robotic hardware and advanced software solutions that help first responders and people with dangerous jobs,” says Booth. “Our mission is to build powerful and affordable technology that we can put in the hands of as many people as possible.”

Booth was one of the early mentors to Ian Bernstein and Adam Wilson, Sphero’s two co-founders, as part of the Techstars Boulder Accelerator 2010 class. He joined Sphero after the Techstars program and helped launch and scale the company and managed numerous key areas, including operations, HR, legal, sales, finance, marketing, and business development.

In connection with the spinout and formation of Company Six, they also closed a $3M seed investment round led by Spider Capital, with participation from existing Sphero investors including Foundry Group, Techstars, as well as new investor GAN Ventures to fund commercialization and market entry of their initial products. At Company Six, the founding team is continuing to develop groundbreaking and affordable robotic technology as they have done over the past 10 years with Sphero. The products and services they will deliver to this new market are essential to maintaining safety, situational awareness, and improving decision making in the field for critical incidents and everyday operating environments.

In conjunction with Company Six spinning off, the board of directors has named Paul Copioli the Chief Executive Officer of Sphero, effective immediately.

Copioli joined Sphero in August 2019 after Sphero joined forces with New York-based littleBits, the company that invented the snap-together electronic building blocks that teach the foundations of circuitry and STEAM, where he served as President and COO. Before littleBits, Paul was the president of VEX Robotics for more than nine years. During his tenure with VEX, Paul led the company to become the largest and most successful of Innovation First International’s (IFI) three wholly-owned subsidiaries, growing the business nine times over in under a decade.

“It’s an honor to lead the Sphero team as we continue to pave the way for accessible robots, STEAM and computer science education for kids around the world,” says Copioli. “With our focus on education and our mission to inspire the creators of tomorrow, Sphero has a long-standing place in our school systems and beyond. Paul Berberian’s immense contribution to the company leaves me with a strong leadership model to carry forward, and I look forward to Sphero’s continued success.”

Berberian, Sphero’s former CEO, will move into the newly designated role of Chairman after more than a decade leading the Boulder-based company. Berberian will also preside over Company Six as the team brings to market both advanced robotic products and a cloud-based analytics and monitoring platform designed to advance the awareness of those who put themselves into harm’s way.

“In my time as Sphero’s CEO I was amazed by the number of kids’ lives we positively affected by bringing our robots into classrooms and living rooms worldwide,” says Berberian. As Chairman of both Sphero and Company Six, this is an opportunity to continue to bring revolutionary robotics technology to new markets to improve the lives of more people, our future leaders, and people with essential and sometimes dangerous job functions. With Paul Copioli and Jim Booth’s experience, I’m confident both companies will flourish under their leadership.”

Greenlight Chooses WISI for DCM Replacement, Headend Monitoring & Analytics

News Image

We first brought in the Inca IP Video Platform to replace equipment for our off-air channels. We ended up replacing 14 pieces of equipment with one Inca chassis, a huge space and power savings.

Greenlight, North Carolina’s community-owned data and video network, chose WISI, a global leader in carrier-grade video delivery solutions, to replace their video processing equipment and power their video headend. The results were substantial; Greenlight significantly reduced rack space and streamlined its video delivery process.

Before deploying WISI’s solution, Greenlight faced the problem of high maintenance end-of-life video equipment.

“We first brought in the Inca IP Video Platform to replace equipment for our off-air channels. We ended up replacing 14 pieces of equipment with one Inca chassis, a huge space and power savings,” said Linwood Tyndall, Infrastructure Engineer at Greenlight.

“I looked to WISI once again when it came time to replace our ageing Cisco DCM D9901,” said Tyndall.

Greenlight subsequently selected WISI’s headend product series to process each step in the video delivery chain and deliver their full channel line-up. The Inca IP Video Platform is used to receive off-air channels and then transrate and transcode both local and national services for delivery. The Tangram Video Platform is used to convert feeds for edge networks, like IP to analog, and multiplex streams for delivery over fiber.

“We are pretty much using WISI through the whole system,” said Tyndall. “We looked at quite a few options for transcoding but nobody else could offer the ease of use and the advanced [user] interface that WISI provides.”

The Inca IP Video Platform is powered by award-winning VidiOS™ management and monitoring tools. The VidiOS™ user interface was designed with visibility in mind to provide an intuitive, user-friendly experience to review video statistics and analysis. Features include inbound and outbound video thumbnails, stream sample downloads, extensive statistical analysis, and end-to-end process logging.

“Other vendors don’t provide the level of analytics and details that the Inca platform provides. You would usually have to use an MPEG analyzer for the details you can easily see in VidiOS™,” said Tyndall. “We found WISI’s UI to be very unique to the market.”

Greenlight also uses WISI’s All Seeing Eye (ASE) product. ASE supports stream monitoring from WISI’s headend solutions and 3rd party equipment to deliver a network-wide visual mosaic of all video streams in a headend.

“ASE saves us a lot of time on troubleshooting and helps us identify issues quickly. It gives us the ability to proactively identify issues before the customer calls them in,” said Tyndall. “Gone are the days of referring to spreadsheets when trying to find the source of an issue in our network.”

“We are happy to be a trusted partner for video providers like Greenlight, who need solid replacement options for ageing equipment. WISI’s carrier-grade products save troubleshooting time, operational costs, and power consumption,” said Sharen Sandhu, VP of Product at WISI. “We pride ourselves on creating intuitive products that make the process of upgrading a headend as smooth as possible.”

Heilind Electronics Expands Sensor Portfolio with P51 Series from SSI Technologies

MediaSensor P51 Sensors

The MediaSensor P51 family of absolute, gauge and sealed gauge pressure transducers is now available from Heilind Electronics.

Heilind Electronics, a premier distributor of electronic components worldwide, has added SSI Technologies’ MediaSensor P51 Series pressure sensors to its portfolio. Made in the USA, this family of sensors includes bulk micro-machined, absolute, sealed and gauge pressure sensors.

MediaSensor P51 pressure sensors are an excellent choice for both harsh and benign media, both due to their stainless steel construction and laser-welded design. Offering superior accuracy over an operating temperature of -40 to 105 degrees Celsius, these compact, robust sensors measure pressures from 3 to 75,000 psi. In addition, the sensors have strong immunity to EMI and other sources of noise that can affect electronic devices. In comparison, standard P51 pressure sensors were designed for 100 volts per meter EMI protection.

P51 pressure sensors are available in three electrical output options: The first two, featuring either a 4 20 mA or 1-5 V output, each operate with an input voltage range of 8-30 V. The third option, featuring a 0.5-4.5 V output (with or without overvoltage protection) operates with a regulated 5 V input supply. The current output (4-20 mA) is often chosen for industrial applications where the signal must travel long distances. This option presents higher immunity to electromagnetic interference, whereas the voltage outputs are chosen for shorter distances.

The MediaSensor P51 is especially useful in cases where the unit must be subjected to moisture or high humidity. This pressure sensor employs a cable overmold, which molds the cable jacket to the top of the sensor to prevent moisture from entering the transducer where the cable exits the unit.

SSI’s P51 Series is well-suited for a variety of automotive, industrial and commercial applications where cost, size and performance are critical. Ideal markets for these pressure sensors include material handling, HVAC and industrial, automotive and agriculture.

Visit Heilind’s website for more information on SSI Technologies’ P51 MediaSensor family.
