Quantum-safe security firm evolutionQ awarded contribution from Canada Space Agency for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Network Research and Development

evolutionQ was awarded a Space Technology Development Program (STDP) contribution by the CSA to develop solutions to advance satellite-based secure quantum communication services and tools to address challenges related to satellite-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks.

Cryptography underpins the secure communications required for the digital, network-based social and financial interactions that are at the heart of modern society and the economy, including banking, the sharing of confidential healthcare data, and the exchange of sensitive information between governmental institutions. However, rapid advancements in quantum computing threaten current encryption methods because quantum computers, when built, will be able to break commonly used cybersecurity systems. It is important to develop tools, like QKD, that will be resistant to such quantum threats.

QKD technologies leverage the fundamental laws of quantum physics to distribute confidential cryptographic keys between two users, while detecting the attempts of malicious third-parties to intercept such keys. Unfortunately, typical terrestrial methods to establish such direct secure connection between locations are limited to relatively short distances, of the order of at most 200 km. This is clearly a challenge for a country as vast as Canada. Satellite-based QKD will enable secure, reliable, and economical key-sharing across Canada.

“A powerful quantum computer has the power to decimate today’s cryptography. As key quantum computing milestones are achieved, the need for quantum-safe solutions intensifies,” said Dr. Michele Mosca, President and CEO of evolutionQ. “Robust cryptography is absolutely necessary for our safety and the proper functioning of our digital economy. We must adopt quantum-safe solutions to secure and safeguard our critical infrastructures, financial services and intellectual property.”

“Quantum Key Distribution is an important tool in addressing the quantum threat. QKD uses the fundamental laws of physics to protect information shared between two parties.” CTO of evolutionQ, Dr. Norbert Lütkenhaus remarked. “Satellite-based QKD is essential for a vast country like Canada and will help secure communications from coast to coast. evolutionQ is poised to utilize its expertise and develop solutions to help establish satellite QKD, and to integrate it with existing terrestrial solutions.”

evolutionQ will develop tools to address the challenges unique to satellite-based QKD. This will be accomplished by modelling the role and performance of QKD satellites, and by designing optimization algorithms to integrate QKD satellites with terrestrial networks. The software solutions will be designed to be integrated with existing and planned satellite hardware. The project is expected to last 24 months.

The initiative will also help Canada safeguard sovereignty in the quantum age and strengthen Canadian leadership in the space and quantum sectors. The initiative aligns with the new Space Strategy for Canada, the safety and security principle in Canada’s Digital Charter and the Government of Canada’s Innovations and Skills Plan.

This project is undertaken with the financial support of the Canadian Space Agency.

About evolutionQ:

35% of U.S. Consumers Have At Least One Smart Device in Their Homes, Says NPD

Even as the smart home market continues to develop and other products become more readily available, consumers today are still most likely to take that first step into the smart home market with the purchase of a security camera.

According to the Home Automation Ownership & Usage Report from NPD’s Connected Intelligence, smart home device penetration has surpassed one out of every three U.S. consumers, with 35% of consumers stating they own at least one type of smart device across a portfolio of products[1]. However, the report found that ownership rates vary greatly by the type of smart device. Security cameras currently lead the pack as the most popular smart home device, owned by 15% of consumers.

Likewise, smart doorbells – also used for monitoring and security purposes – are driving the highest absolute unit volume changes year-over-year, an increase of 1.82 million units and 64% growth. Comparatively, categories outside of security are attracting less attention from consumers. For example, devices such as smart light bulbs and power – products that consumers tend to purchase as items that are convenient and “nice to have” – have fallen to low single-digit unit growth[2].

The Income Factor

There continues to be a sizable income divide between consumers who own smart home devices and those who do not. In fact, ownership in the highest income households is more than double ownership in households with lower incomes. In addition, households earning $150,000+ are more likely to own a broader portfolio of device types. However, these higher-income households make up just 15% of the U.S. representative population.

Yet, the report indicates that cost of smart home devices is not necessarily the only – or even the primary – factor driving purchase decisions, as witnessed by the fact that consumers of all income levels gravitate more to security cameras when starting their smart home collections.

“The value proposition of security cameras – providing safety for both family and home – really resonates with consumers,” said Jill Aldort, Director and Analyst for Home Automation & Mobile Accessories, The NPD Group. “Even as the smart home market continues to develop and other products become more readily available, consumers today are still most likely to take that first step into the smart home market with the purchase of a security camera.”

[1]Categories monitored in NPD’s Home Automation Ownership & Usage Report include security cameras, baby monitors, smart lighting, system controllers, smart locks, smart doorbells, smart garage door openers, smart power, smart sensors, item trackers, and home automation kits.

[2] Source: The NPD Group, Inc./U.S. Retail Tracking Service, 2019 vs. 2018

Methodology

This report draws data from the bi-annual Home Automation Ownership & Usage survey, last fielded from January 6 through January 23, 2020 and reaching 5,044 U.S. consumers age 18 and older across a broad range of geographic regions and demographic profiles. These consumers include both owners and non-owners of smart home devices. This report also draws from The NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service.

SqwaQ Demonstrates BVLOS UAS Flight Capabilities for Controlled Airspace

SqwaQboard

Prominent partners are working with SqwaQ under NDA to liberate drones and fly unfettered in the airspace

SqwaQ, a leader in communications technology for robotics, autonomy and aviation, revealed today that it has successfully demonstrated its patented airborne LTE drone communications technology for multiple partners. The technology enables drones, helicopters, air taxis and other connected aircraft to share the same airspace rather than being segregated. This eliminates the need for UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) restrictions and resolves other obstacles that have been delaying wide-scale, routine UAS integration into the airspace. Rather than segregating or restricting drones, SqwaQ enables safe, unfettered integration into controlled airspace while also resolving Remote Aircraft ID, Pilot Credential Verification, Flight Path Management and other challenges that have limited UAS operations.

Easily integrated or retrofit into commercial UAS, the SqwaQboard is a compact, 3”x6”x1” communication module weighing only 270 grams that aggregates six 3G/4G LTE connections into one, multi-redundant data pipe to broadcast four pilot view and downward cameras or sensors simultaneously, plus multi-redundant command and control (C2) and headroom for an array of avionics like Mode-S transponder, ADS-B in/out and VHF radio. These and more capabilities are already patented or patent pending.

The SqwaQboard leverages the redundancy of communicating with multiple networks and towers simultaneously for more robust, redundant performance. Built to conventional AS9100 and DO-160 aviation safety standards, it is the first and only carrier approved device authorized for Airborne LTE Operations. The company worked with regulators and cellular network owners for over 2 years just to gain that access. As a result, SqwaQ can provision customized bandwidth services on 600 cellular networks across 130 countries and provide affordable roaming across entire regions like North America or the entire EU. This gives the customer a seamless experience because SqwaQ provides the hardware, data services and warranty support on both, eliminating any finger pointing if a problem arrises. It also means users can fly across wide spanning regions without losing connectivity because the six modules can roam across dozens of cellular networks simultaneously.

SqwaQ can enable a remote pilot in New York to fly a properly equipped unmanned aircraft through controlled airspace in Los Angeles with the experience of actually sitting in the cockpit. Multiple pilot view cameras can be supported to stream live, 360 degree views around the aircraft as well as the normal downward cameras or sensors. Nationwide command and control has less than 1/2 second latency round trip. The remote pilot could even talk to air traffic control via an onboard VHF radio just like manned aircraft, enter the traffic pattern, Ident with Mode-S or ADS-B transponder as directed, and then land at LAX airport per ATC approval. To air traffic control, the experience would ‘feel’ like any other manned aircraft routinely handled. The entire experience could also be automated so ATC can remain alert to thousands of active drone flights at any moment without the burden of managing them unless they want to use airport facilities. Gradually, that function could be automated and extend to manned aircraft as well, so air traffic controllers could manage 4-10 times the number of aircraft they handle today.

“Autonomy and industrial IoT require robust, redundant communications. SqwaQ is delivering today what 5G still won’t do in ten years. We have prominent partners working under NDA to liberate drones and fly unfettered in the airspace. That won’t happen with the plastic Chinese toy drones so commonly sold today of course. We’re excited to have major stakeholders in multiple countries pursuing this with us,” said Ted Lindsley, CEO.

About SqwaQ

SqwaQ is an SD-WAN and MVNO service provider focused on high-value mobile, Industrial IoT applications that demand reliable multi-redundant connectivity. Verticals include aviation, telemedicine, ground robotics, autonomous vehicles, oil and gas, and commercial construction. Founded in 2018, the company has more than a dozen patents issued or pending and wholesale bandwidth agreements with major cellular networks to provision custom data services on over 600 cellular networks across 130 countries.
