Paycheck Protection Plan Arms Sign Company to Work Through COVID-19 Crisis

Adam Brown and Rick Rossetti stand on shop floor at their sign company

Adam Brown and Rick Rossetti (left) on the shop floor of their sign company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The PPP has enabled Sign Effectz, Inc. to continue serving customers.

Company President Adam Brown released a statement regarding the impact the federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) had on custom sign company, Sign Effectz, Inc.

Back in March, things were heating up for small businesses. The COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing and the economic lockdown was relatively new. Understandably, many business owners were staring down prolonged uncertainty.

RAMPING UP QUICKLY

Sign Effectz, Inc. is a prime example of how the PPP program has benefited one small business. It kept all of the company’s crews on the job. Team members were understandably concerned about the health of themselves and their families. However, most employees were prepared to move forward with work amid the economic shutdown. Managers ramped up quickly on how to run the business under the appropriate compliance regulations and guidelines.

The benefits from PPP are not just monetary. A great deal of time and diligent effort goes into creating a great work culture. It shows in how strong the company’s employee retention rate is. Keeping the employees at work helps maintain the value of those efforts.

Even though the PPP process seems to be changing daily, every modification has seemed to be beneficial. It appears that the intent of the Small Business Administration is for the majority of the smaller loans to be forgiven. And if not forgiven, any fund balance would be at a 1% interest rate, which is almost unheard of.

WHAT’S HAPPENING TO THE TOP & BOTTOM LINES

Because of the economic shut down, company sales were down about 50% in March and April, but PPP allowed management to maintain cash flow and not have to send employees home. That kept one little economic engine running.

Some customers held back on purchases due to the uncertain future. Although Sign Effectz, Inc. is practicing austerity like other businesses in the sign industry, there are strategic areas where not only sustainability was maintained but growth initiatives will continue.

The company goal has always been growth, not just survival. That means investing money back into the system. Money that doesn’t belong under the mattress. It’s imperative that Sign Effectz, Inc. invests in people and equipment for the success of the business. Some of those investmentss will continue as planned and go into hiring another salesperson by the end of the year, ADA signage manufacturing, replacing dated manufacturing equipment and/or installation equipment, and upgrading the IT system. Thanks to PPP, these initiatives were not put on the back burner.

The PPP has enabled Sign Effectz, Inc. to continue serving customers with the following sign services and products:

  • Sign design and fabrication
  • ADA signage
  • Architectural and building components, like sun control devices and canopies
  • L.E.D. lighting
  • Sculpture and kinetic art
  • Sign maintenance and repair

MAKING HISTORY

2020 is going to go down in history. People will wonder what it was like to live through the pandemic. It may even be akin to the economic devastation of the Great Depression.

However, this country’s overall economy is going to be much stronger after the pandemic has subsided. The PPP funding should be noted as a big contributor to that.

This management team salutes all employees for working through the pandemic. Employees are the biggest asset any company has. The PPP worked very well for Sign Effectz and it certainly served other companies just as well.

Obviously, the Covid-19 pandemic is far from over. Anxiety and uncertainty still present challenges. However, this company has established how to manage the business better in these challenging situations. It’s allowed for “forced improvements” that were unforeseen.

Great companies do not stay pinned down forever. Determination supersedes fear. This company’s determination to move forward takes on a whole new momentum. The virus is a bully that needs to be defeated. And the PPP gives us business owners a tool to stand up to that bully. It helped Sign Effectz, Inc. get ready for the next round in a battle the company is determined to win.

L-com Introduces New Line of SDI Video Over Fiber Extenders

L-com Introduces New Line of SDI Video Over Fiber Extenders

“These easy to install SDI over fiber video extenders eliminate the need to use expensive copper based video repeaters and provide security and immunity to signal distorting EMI/RFI,” said Paul Hospodar, Product Line Manager.

L-com, a preferred manufacturer of wired and wireless connectivity products, announced today that it has just launched a new line of SDI video over fiber extender modules to address broadcast, security, surveillance and digital signage applications.

L-com’s FOCV-series SDI video over fiber extenders convert SDI (uncompressed video format) to an optical signal, and vice-versa. In many cases, extension over fiber can eliminate the need for a camera truck or more expensive electrical repeaters. Other benefits realized by using these fiber video extenders include weight savings vs. copper cable, immunity to EMI/RFI and more secure connections as fiber is harder to tap than copper cabling.

Off-the-shelf options include 3G-SDI transmitter and receiver modules in a small-form factor “inline” packaging, as well as a benchtop/rack-mountable module and dual rate 12G/6G-SDI versions for 4k broadcasting, uncompressed over fiber.

“Our new line of SDI over fiber video extenders allow our customers to save money by retaining their existing copper connected video equipment when longer video runs are required. These easy to install SDI over fiber video extenders eliminate the need to use expensive copper based video repeaters and provide security and immunity to signal distorting EMI/RFI,” said Paul Hospodar, Product Line Manager.

L-com’s new SDI video over fiber extenders are all in-stock and available for same-day shipping.

Radiant Hosts Live Webinar with Photonics Media to Introduce Fundamental Principles of Light and Color Measurement for Light Source and Display Metrology

Radiant Hosts Live Webinar with Photonics Media to Introduce Fundamental Principles of Light and Color Measurement for Light Source and Display Metrology

The human eye is the judge and target market for our illuminated products. It makes sense, then, to measure and test these products the same way the human eye sees them.

Radiant Vision Systems, a leading provider of test and measurement solutions for light sources and displays, announces a new live broadcast of its popular educational webinar “Principles and Applications of Light and Color Measurement,” organized by Photonics Media and hosted by the technical staff at Radiant. This introductory webinar will present the basic principles of photometry and colorimetry, which enable automated systems to perform light source and display metrology according to human visual perception. The webinar will be broadcast live on Wednesday, August 19, 2020, from 10 to 11 A.M. PDT (1 to 2 P.M. EDT). The broadcast includes a technical presentation by Radiant Product Engineer, Jessy Hosken, followed by a live question and answer session with Hosken and Radiant Technical Sales Manager, Ryan Beaty.

“Matching human visual response in measurement is especially important when we’re looking at qualifying light sources and displays,” says Hosken. “The human eye is the judge and target market for our illuminated products. It makes sense, then, to measure and test these products the same way the human eye sees them. Not only do the sciences of colorimetry and photometry allow us to acquire meaningful values of light from these types of products—accurately quantifying what we see with our eyes—but they provide a standard, mathematical way to communicate about a device’s brightness, color, and other visual qualities using objective numerical values. If you are a manufacturer of a light-emitting device, you can use these values to characterize a product during design, set pass and fail tolerances for automated quality control, enforce quality standards on components from suppliers, or certify the performance of your product to your customers, among other useful purposes.”

The upcoming webinar will give a basic introduction to the concepts of human spectral sensitivity and photopic response, standard CIE functions and formula, and instruments that apply these scientific methodologies for highly accurate, automated visual inspection. The webinar will describe how an understanding of human visual perception has guided the development of photometric and colorimetric instruments, such as spectrometers and colorimeters. Such equipment is used by manufacturers to objectively evaluate products during design in the lab, on production lines, and in quality control operations.

Working on the Radiant product management team, presenter Jessy Hosken has acquired a thorough understanding of light and color measurement using imaging colorimeters and sophisticated software tools. She received a B.S. in Physics and STS (Science, Technology, and Society) from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. Co-presenter Ryan Beaty manages the Application and Solutions Engineering Team at Radiant and understands the intricacies of Radiant’s metrology systems including how to develop within various software frameworks. He received a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.
