Sales of Tech Products and Educational Books Rise in U.S., as Traditional Supplies are Delayed, Reports NPD

With many students around the country going back to school remotely, the supply list is proving to be very different this back-to-school season. Sales of school supplies related categories within the office supplies industry, from pencils to spiral notebooks, are down as U.S. consumers delay these purchases. Instead they are investing in other categories such as technology and books to set up school environments at home, according to The NPD Group.

In the consumer technology sector, the surge in sales across many product categories that began in the spring has continued into the back-to-school season, as students gear up for distance learning. Notebook computer sales have been at near historic levels, and in the seven weeks ending August 8 dollar sales grew 51%. Sales have also grown for monitors (+79%), keyboards (+62%), mice (+43%), and docking stations (+12%). Virtual learning platforms have also created a need for communication devices, including USB cameras/webcams (+116%) and non-gaming PC headsets (+81%). Router sales also grew significantly during this period, with mesh routers in particular up 73%, to create a stronger home Wi-Fi connection and enable the home network to handle more traffic.

“Virtual learning has expanded the technology needs of back-to-school consumers in a way we have not seen before. Beyond PCs and peripherals, distance learners will need home internet, connectivity, and dedicated spaces in the home for installation,” said Ben Arnold, NPD’s consumer technology industry analyst.

Also with more learning from home, sales of educational books have grown in the seven weeks ending August 8. Unit sales grew for activity books (+458%) and non-fiction subjects pertaining to school & education (+125%), language arts (+117%), and math (+20%), as well as home schooling books (+144%). On the other hand, but also in line with educational and testing shifts due to COVID-19, sales of adult reference and study aids declined by double-digits – categories which typically spool up for college and adult education classes.

“Educational books are going to be very strong, as families tackle the prospect of more learning-from-home. Workbooks, flashcards, and reference for preschool and early elementary will be especially hot, as parents prioritize that their kids stay on course with critical math and reading skills,” said Kristen McLean, NPD’s books industry analyst.

This year’s back-to-school shifts have altered the course for school supplies sales within the office supplies industry. Items including paper pads and crayons, among many others, saw a springtime sales lift as parents stocked up on products to keep their kids entertained at home. Heading into the peak weeks of the traditional back-to-school season, sales of these school supplies declined by 32% in the seven weeks ending August 8, 2020 compared to the same weeks last year – accumulating to half of the revenue these items typically bring in during this period.

“The uncertainties around this back-to-school season are getting traditional school supplies sales off to a very late and slow start. The decline in sales as a result of consumers putting off purchases will create opportunities for purchase occasions in September and through holiday,” said Leen Nsouli, NPD’s office supplies industry analyst. “There will be a long tail of afterthought purchases as consumers acclimate to their new schooling environment, and atypical sales bumps as different geographies phase in physical classroom attendance at various times, blurring the beginning, ending and peak lines of this back-to-school season.”

ABB Provides Reliable, Efficient Power Conversion for Industrial Applications

ABB CC2725AC48TZL

Helping to solve the specific power challenges of today’s unique industrial applications, ABB has expanded its line of proven CC-series conduction-cooled rectifiers with the addition of the CC2725AC34TZL, CC2725AC48TZL and CC3500AC52TZL power supplies. The new rectifiers feature wide output voltage ranges to provide the precise power needed for various industrial applications as well as the high power density and efficiency required in industrial systems.

Output voltage ranges and efficiencies for the new power supplies are:

  • CC2725AC34TZL – 28-36 volts DC (VDC) output range and 94 percent efficiency.
  • CC2725AC48TZL – 30-58VDC output voltage range and 95 percent efficiency.
  • CC3500AC52TZL – 42-53VDC output range and 80 PLUS Titanium-level 96 percent efficiency.

“Powering today’s diverse and complex industrial applications can present an array of unique challenges, and most applications have their own unique sets of requirements. Factors such as size, power level, operating environment, reliability, and heavy-duty cycling availability all need to be taken into account,” explained Jim Montgomery, senior product manager at ABB. “We’re working closely with industrial customers to identify and address their specific power challenges and to create the robust, reliable power supplies they need.”

Fast transient response is one example of an industrial power requirement that is in demand today. It’s a common concern for applications such as industrial lasers, military and 5G radio communications, medical particle beam accelerators, and supercomputers. In applications like these, rapid power pulsing is required to help ensure proper operation – and that rapid pulsing can be harsh on the power supply.

“Imagine a power supply that needs to manage power pulses of up to 10,000 cycles per second. That fast, demanding cycling puts a strain on the reliability and performance of a power supply,” Montgomery continued. “To help manage this strenuous activity, system designers can employ our control loop technology. This enables users to precisely tune the power units to best accommodate the transient response needs of their applications, which, in turn, helps ensure consistent, reliable power each time the load cycles between zero and full power – and can extend the overall life of the rectifier.”

ABB’s new CC2725AC48 rectifier introduces a new level of power density, in part due to its compact size and reduced weight. The rectifier is designed to meet the needs of smaller industrial devices such as robotics or scientific and life-science RF devices – where weight and size are key design drivers.

All three of the new CC-series rectifiers employ fanless thermal management techniques to better channel and manage heat and maintain optimally rated power levels – a frequent challenge in small, fully enclosed electrical devices. By placing power conversion components near, or even in contact with, a metal casing, excessive heat can be wicked away via conductive cooling. In addition, the rectifiers can easily be adapted to integrate with an applications’ existing heat sink or chill plate, enabling even higher power densities and efficiencies at a system level.

The new CC-series rectifiers also feature:

  • Fully digital operation, enabling higher efficiencies and power densities.
  • Both PMBus®-compliant I2C serial bus and RS485 communications for diagnostics, reporting, remote monitoring and, for the CC3500AC52, remote firmware updates.
  • Comprehensive input, output and over-temperature protection.
  • Redundant, parallel operation with active load sharing and redundant 5V auxiliary power.
  • Power factor correction that meets both EN/IEC 61000-3-2 and EN 60555-2 requirements.

Sellercloud Releases Skublox – Put-to-Light, Pick-to-Light Technology

We’ve found that businesses that use put-to-light pick-to-light systems are able to process and ship out orders more effectively and with fewer mistakes.

Sellercloud, a multi-channel e-commerce management platform with billions of dollars in ‘Gross Merchandise Volume’ (GMV) has released Skublox, a put-to-light pick-to-light technology that reduces sorting and shipping errors. Skublox reduces manual labor costs incurred by fulfillment centers by optimizing picking, sorting, and shipping.

Skublox is the latest addition to Sellercloud’s workflow, which also includes Skustack and Shipbridge. These technologies, along with Skublox, allow for seamless order fulfillment for omnichannel e-commerce businesses.

Skublox uses its intelligent sorting system to let the sorter know where to put each scanned product. Each user gets a unique color. The light on the shipper side turns green when the order is fully sorted and ready to be packaged and shipped. This boosts efficiency while reducing mistakes on the sorter and shipper sides.

Jeremy Greenberg, CEO of SellerCloud says, “e-commerce businesses often have to process a substantial number of customer orders that each contain multiple products. Being able to sort these efficiently – just scanning, seeing the light, and placing the item in the correct slot – can dramatically reduce incidents of customers receiving the wrong items. We’ve found that businesses that use put-to-light pick-to-light systems are able to process and ship out orders more effectively and with fewer mistakes.”

This unique approach to Put To Light workflows incorporates IoT (Internet of Things) and the added flexibility of WiFi to provide warehouse workers with an enhanced and flexible experience at a remarkably affordable price point. To further remove barriers to entry, the setup of Skublox is an easy DIY project that can have your team up and running in under an hour.

In addition, the Skublox mobile app allows for managers to see the status of sorted orders, manage and monitor custom walls, and view the movement of items through the process.

Powercast Releases Over-the-Air Wireless Charging Grip for Nintendo Joy-Con Controllers on Amazon

Powercast’s Wireless Charging Grip for Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers is first gaming product that charges over the air without wires or mats.

Over-the-air wireless charging is perfect for most of us gamers who play a few hours a day,” said Charles Greene. “Without having to plug in or position it on a charging mat, users set their Wireless Charging Grip down in front of their PowerSpot and it wirelessly recharges until they game again.

Powercast Corporation, the leader in radio-frequency (RF)-based over-the-air wireless power technology, has released first production units of its Wireless Charging Grip for Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Controllers, the world’s first gaming product that charges over the air without wires or charging mats. Developed to deliver carefree wireless charging where gamers don’t have to dock their Joy-Con controllers, Powercast’s grip automatically recharges them over the air when placed within one foot of Powercast’s PowerSpot® wireless power transmitter. Powercast’s Wireless Charging Grip and its companion PowerSpot transmitter are now available on Amazon initially for Nintendo Switch gamers in the U.S. and Canada for a bundled price of US$149.99: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Charging-PowerSpot-Transmitter-Bundle/dp/B08FTJPDBS/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=wireless+charging+grip+powerspot&qid=1598271782&sr=8-2

Most grips simply make Joy-Cons easier to hold, while Powercast’s grip also wirelessly charges two Joy-Cons and doubles as a backup battery pack. It keeps batteries topped off when out of the transmitter’s range for about 26 hours of gameplay on one charge. Most gamers can achieve a full charge over a 24-hour period by simply leaving their Wireless Charging Grip near the front of their PowerSpot transmitter between gaming sessions. Daily usage and battery level will determine charging range and rate.

The LED on the grip guides gamers where to place their grip to optimize charging. When fully charged the LED double blinks green, and when the grip needs charging the LED double blinks red. It blinks green when fast charging, yellow when moderate charging, and red to tell users to place their Wireless Charging Grip closer to the PowerSpot transmitter for faster charging. A new PowerSpot app (iOS and Android) provides a hub for monitoring the charging status of the grip and other PowerSpot-enabled devices, downloading firmware updates, and more.

“Over-the-air wireless charging is perfect for most of us gamers who play a few hours per day,” said Charles Greene, Ph.D., chief operating and technical officer of Powercast. “Without having to plug in or position it on a charging mat, users can simply set their Wireless Charging Grip down in front of their PowerSpot transmitter and it will wirelessly recharge until they’re ready to game again.”

Greene continued, “Our grip is great for gamers who want the convenience to ‘set it and forget it,’ but we also included a standard USB-C port for wired charging if needed.” He explained, “Wired charging delivers high power for a fast charge, while over-the-air charging delivers more convenient, lower power over an extended period of time. Powercast’s highly efficient RF harvesting system optimizes power delivery over the air for a high performance, easy-to-use alternative to wired charging.”

Powercast’s embedded Powerharvester® receiver harnesses RF energy sent over the air from the U.S. FCC- and Canadian ISED-approved PowerSpot transmitter, and converts it to direct current (DC) to charge the Wireless Charging Grip’s embedded battery. This embedded battery then charges the connected Joy-Cons, and can act as a backup battery pack once the Joy-Cons are fully recharged. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the grip requests power from the transmitter when its batteries are low, and signals it to stop when charged.

“While our focus remains helping our OEM customers design in our wireless power technology and deliver their products to market, we’ve really enjoyed developing our own wirelessly rechargeable consumer product as well,” continued Greene. “Many of us are Switch gamers, so we can’t wait to leave our Joy-Cons in the grip and just set it down to recharge without having to dock them.”

“We’re very excited to start shipping our Wireless Charging Grip even amidst the pandemic that caused manufacturing delays, and we plan to continue to ramp production as the global situation allows,” continued Greene.

Powercast’s future vision is for consumers to be able to place all their PowerSpot-enabled devices in front of a PowerSpot transmitter to enjoy far-field (up to 80 feet, or 24 meters) over-the-air wireless charging. Thirty or more enabled devices in the charging zone will automatically connect and receive power, sharing the transmitter’s three-watt (EIRP) output emitted in the 915 MHZ band. A device’s power consumption determines its charging range and rate; power-hungry products charge best at close range, while low-power devices such as sensors can operate at the maximum distance. Each device’s instructions will recommend its charging distance and time.

Antennas Direct Survey Reveals Misconceptions Around Cord-Cutting and Reliable TV Access During COVID-19 in America

News Image

“Americans are still overpaying for access to content that can be available for free, and it’s a huge problem,” -Richard Schneider, CEO and founder of Antennas Direct.

Americans officially have more streaming choices than they ever did before, but cable is still the not-so-silent player that’s halting the cord-cutting movement. In fact, nearly one in four Americans still have a cable subscription, and another one in four still subscribe to cable in addition to a streaming service. That’s according to the Streaming Stress Survey released today by Antennas Direct. As pioneers and leaders in digital TV antenna technology, Antennas Direct wanted to find out what some of the key concerns are that consumers have when it comes to cancelling their expensive cable subscriptions. Polling 1,200 American adults (18+) who watch television for at least 1-2 hours per week, findings show how consumers’ access (or lack thereof) to television and entertainment impacts the way they live their lives – especially as they navigated the pandemic and having restricted access to life outside their homes.

Results illustrate that despite having endless access to more affordable options, a dependency on cable still very much exists amongst American consumers. Survey findings show that while the Peacock’s and Quibi’s of the world continue to fight for viewers, one in four (29%) consumers say the number of new streaming services available will not make them any more likely to cut the cord. Instead, ties to cable were reinforced in some cases during the global health crisis, with one in three (35%) saying they relied most on their cable subscription to receive news and updates related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The crisis even created envy for cable for some, with another one in four (26%) admitting they found themselves wishing they had cable to access important news updates.

“Americans are still overpaying for access to content that can be available for free, and it’s a huge problem,” said Richard Schneider, CEO and founder of Antennas Direct. “Eliminating attachments to cable once and for all requires a commitment to breaking stigmas that cutting the cord might mean sacrificing access to live TV. It’s time we change the narrative and make sure that the ability to watch TV isn’t a financial burden for the average American consumer.”

Additional report findings show:

Americans will overpay for cable, but struggle to justify streaming fees: Two in three (64%) said that their cable subscription fee was worth it to have reliable access to live TV, but when it comes to streaming, fewer are able to justify the cost, despite being more affordable than cable. In fact, two in five (44%) say they’ve signed up for a free trial of a streaming service and canceled it to avoid being charged, and half (49%) did so because they didn’t feel it was worth the money.

Price and access are important to Americans – they also fuel attachments to cable: Although half (50%) say price is the most important factor when choosing a television provider, two in five (39%) admit they’d need to cut their services if they lost household income. It is primarily misconceptions around access that hold consumers hostage to their cable bills, with one in three (35%) saying they think they would have to subscribe to up to five streaming services to be able to access the same amount of content cable offers.

Cord-cutting is halted by the fear of the unknown: Hesitancy to cut the cord is driven by a lack of awareness and many consumers questioning whether or not they’re capable of cutting the cord. One in five (22%) say they feel more confident filing their taxes than setting up a new streaming tool, and half (48%) say they think cord-cutters need to be more “tech-savvy” than cable subscribers.

When it comes to understanding why so many Americans are still attached to cable, misconceptions around cord-cutting and access-reliability are largely to blame. In fact, one in four (29%) cite a lack of access to TV programming as their primary concern with cutting cable, and nearly half (42%) believe that cable subscribers are more likely to be informed on current events compared to cord-cutters. This comes from a lack of understanding that major broadcast networks can be accessed for free, without cable. In fact, a quarter (25%) of consumers had no idea that they could access broadcast networks for free using an antenna.

Survey Methodology:

Antennas Direct’s Streaming Stress survey was conducted in June 2020 and polled 1,200 Americans 18+ who watch television for at least 1-2 hours per week to understand how they typically access local news and entertainment. The survey also sought to find out how those elements impact the way consumers see the world, especially as they navigated the pandemic and experienced restricted access to life outside their homes. This survey was conducted over mobile devices by the survey company Pollfish.
