GaNFast Chargers Enable Apple iPhone 12 High-Speed Charging Compatibility

News Image

Apple have encouraged everyone to “Think Different” about charging, which gives users the freedom to choose the ultimate fast charger

Navitas Semiconductor Limited today announced a new listing of Apple-compatible GaNFast charger solutions for the iPhone 12 and all other Apple mobile devices from AirPods and the Apple Watch all the way to the biggest MacBook Pro.

At the launch of the iPhone 12 on October 14th, Apple announced that the phone would ship without a charger in the box. For confused users, left with an old, low-powered, slow silicon charger, the new online selector tool simply recommends fast, reliable and 100%-compatible GaNFast chargers for all Apple mobile products.

Compatibility and safety is provided by using an industry standard called Universal Serial Bus with Power Delivery (USB-PD). With USB-PD, the mobile device, such as an iPhone 12, communicates with the wall charger telling it exactly how much power to deliver and at what voltage. The iPhone will also communicate back when it is fully powered, and the charger will slow down and then enter ‘sleep mode’ to save energy.

To connect, Apple customers can use certified MFI (originally “Made for iPod”) “C-to-Lightning” cables for all iPhones since the iPhone 5, and a few iPad models. For most iPads, and all new MacBooks, a 3A-rated “C-to-C” cable can be selected, noting that the big MacBook Pro 16″ requires a 5A-rated ‘E-marker’ C-to-C cable to charge and transfer data at the highest speed.

Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a next-generation power semiconductor technology that runs up to 100x faster than old, slow silicon chips, with dramatic improvements in energy savings and power density. Navitas’ GaNFast power ICs integrate GaN power (FET) with drive, control and protection to enable up to 3x more power in half the size and weight. Multi-output chargers can fast-charge up to 4 Apple devices at the same time and at 3x-4x lower cost and lighter weight than individual chargers.

“Apple have encouraged everyone to “Think Different” about charging, which gives users the freedom to choose the ultimate fast charger,” said Stephen Oliver, VP corporate marketing and investor relations for Navitas. “At the same time, the vast array of options can be daunting, so we’ve created a simple, safe way for users to select the best charger – with the fastest performance. The GaNFast listing also includes familiar brand names such as Belkin, Anker, AUKEY and Baseus.”

The range of over 50 Apple-compatible chargers starts at 20W to fast-charge the iPhone 12 series. The same charger can charge the AirPods case, the Apple Watch and has more than enough power for the new 15W MagSafe wireless charger. 60W-65W versions will fast charge the MacBook 13” and higher-power, multi-output GaN fast chargers, with 100W or 120W will fast charge the largest MacBook Pro 16” and have extra ports to power an iPhone, iPad and AirPods simultaneously.

About Navitas: Navitas Semiconductor Inc. is the world’s first and only GaN Power IC company, founded in 2014. Navitas has a strong and growing team of power semiconductor industry experts with a combined 200 years of experience in materials, devices, applications, systems and marketing, plus a proven record of innovation with over 300 patents among its founders. GaN power ICs integrate GaN power (FET) with drive, control and protection to enable faster charging, higher power density and greater energy savings for mobile, consumer, enterprise, eMobility and new energy markets. Over 120 Navitas patents are issued or pending, and over 8 million GaNFast power ICs have been shipped with zero failures.

Consumers Look To Reimagine 2020 Holiday Celebrations

News Image

Since the onset of the pandemic, virtual storytelling has been on the rise. And with the holidays fast approaching, consumers are looking for the most immersive ways to put themselves in the action — even when they can’t really be there. A new ENGINE Insights study from RICOH THETA of 1,004 American consumers showed that while 42% of Americans are still optimistic for in-person gatherings this holiday season, more than half of respondents (58%) will be celebrating the season in a different way.

With this reimagined holiday experience, RICOH THETA looked to uncover how imagery (photo and video) is being used to tell stories. The survey showed that the majority (60%) feel that photography falls short of being immersive enough to put them in the action. In addition, this need for eye-catching content is of the utmost importance to Millennials and Gen Z — 47% from each group surveyed believe that their images need to stand out from others.

With the need for immersive content, RICOH THETA’s 360-degree camera technology may offer an affordable and unique imaging solution. The compact, dual lens cameras capture the entire environment around the device with the single click of a button. And with high-speed wireless transfer, images can be uploaded quickly to smart phones, edited to perfection in the THETA+ editing app, and shared on social media channels with ease for friends and family to see.

Full survey data can be shared upon request, as well as a loan camera if interested in a product trial.

About RICOH THETA

Apcela announces SASE capabilities in the Arcus platform

SASE is the next step to optimizing network security in the cloud

Apcela, a leading innovator in software-defined, cloud-optimized network services, announced Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) as a part of the Arcus Secure platform, which enables enterprises to distribute security to the edge.

SASE (pronounced “Sassy”) is Gartner’s name(1) for secure access service edge. To us, this emerges as the combination of SD-WAN capabilities with a number of security services that are primarily delivered through a cloud-based delivery model. In short, a SASE offering helps simplify network management by offering highly customizable policy-based control that can be tailored by user identity, session context, and application needs for performance and security – and it’s delivered from the cloud.

Kunal Thakkar, Head of Solutions Engineering at Apcela, shares that “A Secure Access Solution is the marriage between network and security and delivers many critical functions such as Firewall as a Service, Data Loss Prevention, Web Application Firewall, Zero Trust Network Access, and more.”

According to Gartner experts Neil MacDonald, Lawrence Orans, Joe Skorupa, “SASE is driven by enterprise digital business transformation: the adoption of cloud-based services by distributed and mobile workforces; edge computing and business continuity plans that must include flexible, anywhere, anytime, secure remote access…By 2024, at least 40% of enterprises will have explicit strategies to adopt SASE, up from less than 1% at year-end 2018.” (2)

At the center of Apcela’s solution is the Arcus Platform, a software-defined approach to the multi-cloud environment which consists of Arcus Connect, Arcus Secure, and Arcus Intelligence. Arcus Secure, a security layer that shifts the security stack from the data center to the cloud, operates as a plug and play platform for SASE. The API is integrated with Arcus Intelligence in order to offer a holistic network security platform complete with automation and network visibility.

The Arcus Platform relies on AppHubs, virtual data centers in the cloud. Instead of having one or two premise-based data centers per region, we manage a dynamic, global footprint of over 60 AppHubs around the world. Instead of taking months or years to build out, we can stand-up a customer in days. Additionally, proximity to end users is key when it comes to application performance. AppHubs within Apcela Arcus provide the framework that enables us to deliver a software-defined, cloud optimized network – and that includes SASE. This allows SASE to truly exist at the edge – rather than deployed natively in public cloud, which can be repetitive and cost-prohibitive.

In conjunction with Arcus Secure and the globally distributed AppHubs in key geographies, Apcela’s portfolio of supported SD-WAN technologies and Remote Access Solutions, such as Cisco AnyConnect and Palo Alto Networks Global Protect, provide verity of powerful options for the customers to on-ramp their users and sites in an encrypted and secure manner to a proximate Apcela AppHub. This focus on ‘best of breed’ vendors over ‘single-pass solutions’ is one aspect that sets Apcela’s solution apart from other SASE vendors.

“Apcela’s Arcus platform is built ground-up to integrate various solutions in a modular manner depending on the needs and preferences of the customers who have existing investments. We can lift and shift their security stack to the cloud, and extend the reach of their firewalls,” says Thakkar. “SASE is the next step to optimizing network security in the cloud.”

1. Gartner, The Future of Network Security Is in the Cloud, Neil MacDonald, Lawerence Orans, and Joe Skorupa, August 30, 2019

2. Gartner, Hype Cycle for Network Security, 2020, Pete Shoard, June 30, 2020 https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/3986990/hype-cycle-for-network-security-2020

About Apcela

Apcela provides software-defined, cloud optimized networks for the digitally transforming enterprise. Delivered as a service, we enable enterprises to easily deploy and operate a software-defined network and security architecture that was built for a multi-cloud world.

CAST Releases New Issue Paper on “Ground and Aerial Robots for Agricultural Production: Opportunities and Challenges”

News Image

The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) released a new paper, Ground and Aerial Robots for Agricultural Production: Opportunities and Challenges. It is now available for free download. This paper discusses ground and aerial robots; robotic manipulators; robots used for row crops, orchards, and specialty crops; automated systems in animal agriculture; and enabling factors for the deployment and adoption of robots.

Today, highly automated systems are employed in crop and animal industries to enhance agricultural input efficiency and thus increase agricultural output with reduced adverse impact on the environment. As suggested by Dr. Pitla and Dr. Shearer, both authors on this paper, one kind of automated system for crop production is using unmanned ground vehicles instead of large manned machinery to reduce soil compaction. Robots or automated systems used in animal industries include automatic milking systems, feeding systems, cleaning systems that can spray disinfectants, and robots that can pick up eggs. Research from Dr. Condotta, an author on this paper, points out there have been concepts for automation developed for estimating weights of pigs.

Ground and aerial robots combined with artificial intelligence techniques are able to tackle the rising food, fiber, and fuel demands of the rapidly growing population that is slated to be around 10 billion by the year 2050. Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) can detect plant emergence and identify weeds without needing to physically enter the field. UAS based systems can also be used to measure animal temperature to identify possible illness and deter bird pests in specialty crops. This Issue Paper presents opportunities provided by ground and aerial robots for improved crop and animal production, and the challenges associated with their progress and adoption.

The Issue Paper, Ground and Aerial Robots for Agricultural Production: Opportunities and Challenges, is available to download on CAST’s website. The webinar will take place at Noon Central on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Dr. Santosh Pitla and a panel of the paper’s authors will share highlights of the publication, followed by a Q&A session. Registration for the free webinar can be made here.
