Yamaha YDS-150 Digital Saxophone Provides an Engaging Playing Experience for Musicians of All Ages and Levels

Yamaha will be showcasing the YDS-150 Digital Saxophone during NAMM’s virtual Believe in Music week starting January 21, 2021. The YDS-150 is a first-of-its-kind instrument that provides the easiest way in which saxophonists of all levels and those new to playing a wind instrument can create great sounding music from the very start.

The YDS-150 effectively emulates an authentic saxophone experience digitally—from the sound and key layout to feedback from the instrument—while maintaining the sense of unity between the saxophone and musician. The Digital Saxophone breaks the barrier to entry for new or returning musicians providing the ability to quickly express themselves creatively and musically.

Unlike MIDI Wind Controllers, the YDS-150 incorporates a key structure that replicates that of a traditional saxophone, offering players the natural feel to which they are accustomed. A genuine brass bell enhances the acoustic presence of the instrument thanks to the company’s new proprietary Integrated Bell Acoustic System technology. The sound and vibration of the speaker unit at the top of the instrument are transmitted to the bell through the sound pipe, and in turn, the instrument itself vibrates similarly to a traditional saxophone. Vibrations are carried to the mouth and fingertips through the mouthpiece and keys to give players authentic instrumental feedback. What’s more, the Digital Saxophone sings with longer reverberation thanks to the brass bell, making it possible for musicians to play in a naturally expressive way.

Bringing the saxophone into the digital world opens up an exciting, new world of creative possibilities, not only offering a more accessible and easy way to learn the saxophone but also enhancing the practicing musician’s experience.

Proper embouchure, breath control and good technique are essential components for learning a traditional saxophone. While the YDS-150 can also measure breath pressure and sense articulation, it delivers a beautiful and consistent sound regardless of how the musician blows into the mouthpiece. This allows musicians to focus more on proper fingering and creative ideas, serving to make the playing experience enjoyable from the very first time they play.

Additionally, the musician can choose from more than 50 on-board sounds, including emulations of popular Yamaha Custom Z and Custom EX saxophones as well as the 62 Series baritone saxophones.

Finally, the instrument is Bluetooth equipped, enabling it to be paired with mobile devices through the “YDS Controller” app. Using the app, players can edit voices, customize saxophone fingerings, and adjust instrument settings such as resistance and response, as well as tuning. And for the ultimate in private practice, the YDS-150 can be used with headphones, giving players the ability to practice anywhere, any time of day or night without disturbing others.

EK-AIO Lineup Is Expanding

EK’s AIO product line will shortly be getting a brand-new version, the EK-AIO Basic, that will be available with 240 and 360mm radiators. These are completely black All-In-One liquid cooling solutions for modern AMD and Intel CPUs. They come with a minimalist, all-black pump cover and black fans.

These AIOs offer all the benefits of a water-cooling solution in a compact, easy to install, and maintenance-free design. They are simple, efficient, and come without any flashy D-RGB lighting, with a brushed, aluminum-like pattern on the black pump cover. With the lack of RGB, they will be even more competitively priced than the original EK-AIO units.

A Brand New Active Backplate Cooling Solution

Pushing technology further when it comes to custom loop PC liquid cooling, during the EXPO, EK will also show their approach to active backplate cooling for graphics cards. They have the first proper active backplate cooling solution that is integrated seamlessly, in a way that does not require awkward soft tubing connections.

Since the PCB itself is mainly a huge heatsink – it has several layers of copper that make up all electrical traces – it is great at absorbing heat from all the components on the PCB. Removing that excess heat from the PCB will lower the overall temperature of all the components on it, even those that are not directly cooled.

The most significant improvements from this kind of solution can be seen when cooling the areas with high dissipation, as the backside of the VRM, GPU core, and VRAM. Lowering temperatures on all electrical components by cooling the GPU’s backside will prolong their lifespan and make them more efficient, causing less power leaking.

With the newest power-hungry GPUs that have their components densely packed, every additional point of cooling is very welcome, since lower temperatures allow higher overclocks and more GPU boost. And with flagship graphics cards, like the RTX 3090 that has video memory placed on the PCB’s backside, it makes even more sense for this additional cooling.

Another benefit is thermal pads between the PCB and the backplate since it reduces coil whine. Thermal pads act as absorbers – they are soft and could lessen the coil whine caused by the vibration of the inductor coils. Having a small water block on the backside of the GPU makes the whole assembly sturdier compared to only having a standard backplate, which in turn acts as a better absorber of vibrations.

Noise-generating air flow turbulence at both ends of the speaker port is reduced by changing how the port widens from input to output, adding a twist to it. Suppressing turbulence reduces muddiness, lowering distortion in the low bass region. This strengthens the connection between the port and main drivers for clear, tight low frequencies and a seamless transition to the full range drivers.

A built-in 22W power amplifier is optimized for the speaker unit, comprising a 10cm (4″) woofer and a 2.2cm (0.8″) tweeter.
