Teal Drones and Decathlon Capital Partners Agree on Multi-Million-Dollar Funding Deal to Fuel Growth, R&D

Teal is a model of innovation and technological excellence. Their commitment to U.S.-made, highly secure drone technology has opened up a huge market with enterprises, defense organizations and public safety initiatives were data security and high-level technical performance is mission critical.

Teal Drones has accepted a multi-million-dollar investment package from Decathlon Capital Partners to fund the company’s growth and finance continued research and development efforts.

The funding agreement comes as the innovative unmanned aerial systems company expands its product line and grows partnerships with the U.S. military and commercial enterprises for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and public safety applications. Teal is focused on pioneering new uses for drone systems beyond the “flying camera” applications so often seen in use today. The development of complex air control, data processing and mapping technologies housed in rugged, high-performance drones allows Teal to transform how the military, public safety organizations and commercial enterprises operate.

Teal’s signature product is the Golden Eagle, a secure, intelligent, rugged and high-performance drone system domestically produced to exacting U.S. defense industry standards. The U.S. production of the entire system is critical, as defense and other sensitive commercial drone technology applications either prohibit or discourage the use of internationally produced drones because of security and data concerns.

“As drone technology explodes in popularity, much of the focus has been on the hobbyist market,” said George Matus, CEO and founder of Teal. “But as security, performance and commercial- and defense-grade computing power have unlocked transformational new uses of unmanned aerial systems, Teal is showing the industry-leading innovation that Teal technology, produced right here in the United States, can deliver to a wide range of markets.”

Teal is leading U.S. drone technology into the future, where uses like search and rescue, defense and public safety are already supercharged by the Golden Eagle’s next-generation capabilities. Now, with the drone’s onboard supercomputing capabilities and powerful sensor technology, artificial intelligence and other emerging applications like multi-drone coordination are increasingly attainable.

Teal sought Decathlon Capital Partners funding as a way to secure the growth capital needed to continue scaling its drone technology without surrendering equity, as is typical in a venture capital or private equity agreement. Teal will repay the investment through future revenue, allowing the company to keep its ownership structure intact.

“Teal is a model of innovation and technological excellence,” said Decathlon Capital Partners co-founder and managing partner Wayne Cantwell. “Their commitment to U.S.-made, highly secure drone technology has opened up a huge market with enterprises, defense organizations and public safety initiatives were data security and high-level technical performance is mission critical.”

Radical New Training Bolsters Weakest Link in Cybersecurity

Global cybercrime costs are expected to reach $10.5 trillion by 2025, up from $3 trillion in 2015.

Cybercrime is a global problem but in every organization, there is a very local potential solution: a vigilant, engaged, and properly trained workforce.

The cost of a data breach, in terms of revenue, reputation, legal exposure, and operational disruption, can be devastating; 60% of small-and medium-sized businesses close within six months of experiencing a cyberattack.(1) Meanwhile, the problem is growing rapidly especially because of changes due to COVID-19; global cybercrime costs are expected to reach $10.5 trillion by 2025, up from $3 trillion in 2015.(2) “Cybercrime is a global problem,” says Drip7 founder and CEO Heather Stratford, “but in every organization, there is a very local potential solution: a vigilant, engaged, and properly trained workforce.”

Over 90% of all cyberattacks, notes Stratford, are executed using information from employees who unwittingly give away their system ID and access credentials to hackers.(3) The problem, Stratford says, is not just a lack of cybersecurity awareness training, but getting training that works to the people who need it in the way they will actually use it. Most training doesn’t actually accomplish anything, and the numbers prove it. According to research from Forrester, she notes, over a third of employees who have had security awareness training still admit to disregarding security policies.(4) Microlearning, says Stratford, which breaks content into bite-size chunks, has been demonstrated to produce much better results than the traditional lecture-followed-by-a-test approach, both immediately and in terms of longer-range retention.(5)

An even more effective approach with today’s workforce, says Stratford, is a newly introduced breakthrough solution. It is called Drip7. By combining microlearning with gamification, the program applies game design to cybersecurity awareness training to increase retention. The most obvious parts of game design are points, awards, and leaderboards—but includes much more. Stratford notes that in a recent survey of nearly 900 employees, 83% of those who received gamified training felt more motivated as a result, while 61% of those who received non-gamified training felt bored and unproductive.(6)

“We call it Drip7,” says Stratford, “to emphasize a basic point: you don’t internalize something by hearing it once. You need to hear it seven times to remember and put the knowledge into practice.” Instead of lectures that remove employees from work, Drip7 training arrives in the form of a question a day that the employee answers. This increases engagement in learning and retention, and at its core keeps cybersecurity in the employee’s mind—not by force, but through play.

Stratford, CEO and Founder of the cybersecurity training company Stronger International, developed the framework of Drip7 as part of a project to enhance the cybersecurity training within a large hospital system. As awareness of the solution’s capabilities spread it became apparent that the combination of microlearning, customizability, and gamification leading to high ongoing employee involvement answered a need not simply for one client or industry, but for a worldwide digitized economy.

Drip7 is sold on a licensing basis, with over 80,000 users already licensed on the platform. For more information, please see drip7.com. “This isn’t a learning management system,” says Stratford, “It’s a way to make learning and training actually do what they need to do. Our goal is to take the fear out of cybersecurity and make it both fun and effective.”

MLCC World-Wide Shortages drive increased demand for Empower Semiconductor E-CAP™ Capacitor Technology

News Image

Since we launched E-CAP in late 2020 there has been unprecedented demand for our technology by industry leaders in mobile and data center products. More recently we have received increased demand due to the supply shortage of MLCC products.

Empower Semiconductor, the world leader in Integrated Voltage Regulators (IVR), today announced it is increasing production of its E-CAP silicon capacitor technology. E-CAP is a vastly superior performing capacitor, far exceeding the semiconductor industry’s previously leading Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC), which is amidst another significant supply chain shortage. The MLCC market was estimated at $8.4B in 2018.

MLCC’s are space limiting, inefficient, unreliable, and low performing when compared to E-CAP. Empower Semiconductor has made the most significant advancement for capacitors in decades as E-CAP enables new possibilities for today’s applications due to the incredible size reduction, performance increase, and improved reliability. MLCC’s are also prone to material shortages and pricing volatility as witnessed most recently. The E-CAP silicon capacitor product platform can alleviate supply shortages with the added performance and reliability benefits.

“Since we launched E-CAP in late 2020 there has been unprecedented demand for our technology by industry leaders in mobile and data center products. More recently we have received increased demand due to the supply shortage of MLCC products” said Steve Shultis, Senior Vice President WW Sales and Marketing at Empower Semiconductor. “We knew our performance was winning and the added benefit of our supply chain has created a tremendous surge in demand for E-CAP.”

E-CAP can be an ideal replacement of MLCC products as a power supply bypass capacitor in low voltage DC/DC voltage regulators and in-package for SoC’s and Processors. Empower Semiconductor’s silicon capacitor technology features superior stability with no DC or AC bias de-rating, no temperature de-rating, and no significant effects of aging. Combined with the ultra-low ESL (<15pH), E-CAP provides a highly simplified and reliable solution to the system designer. This highly differentiated high-performance technology is available in configurations up to 8.4µF for operating voltages under 5V. Height limited applications are addressed with the capability of less than 100µm in thickness. This tiny die format allows for footprints that are 80% smaller than equivalent MLCC based solutions.

E-CAP is currently offered in two standard products with additional configurations coming soon. The EC1001 is a 220nF low ESR/ESL silicon capacitor in an 0402 package. It can be used as a replacement for common MLCC values of 0.1μF/0.22μF/0.47μF. The EC1100 is a 620nF silicon capacitor array (2.5 x 0.6mm) comprising 5 capacitors that can be combined or used individually. Both products are available as 150μm thickness in Tape & Reel.

Empower’s EP70XX IVR family, which is known for its superior performance and unmatched power density, was the first application for E-CAP. Empower has mastered the expertise of leveraging the superior characteristics of the technology to provide its size benefits to a variety of implementations such as die, package, and PCB substrates. The performance benefits allow higher power efficiency to be achieved due to the superior voltage filtering for better SoC/CPU voltage accuracy during load transients.

E-CAP opens up demanding new applications in IoT, wearables, mobile, and processors where size, performance, and flexibility are essential.
