UAVs are a useful tool, but they only truly effective if they can collect sensor data that results in actionable intelligence.

Kongsberg Geospatial announced today that it has been selected by Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) to conduct trials of a new long-endurance UAV surveillance system for the Canadian Coast Guard. The MartinUAV V-BAT aircraft was selected to provide the unique ability to combine take off and landing from the small confines aboard ship with the long endurance of a fixed-wing aircraft while carrying multiple sensors.

The aircraft will communicate with the Kongsberg Geospatial sensor data management system, called MIDAS, which allows a range of sensor data, including full-motion video from unmanned systems to be processed and exploited in near real-time by analysts on board Canadian Coast Guard ships. MIDAS provides the capability to compare historical and live data from the mission area, and to examine sensor data with a variety of tools, including motion and object detection, in near-real time. This near real-time analytical capability can greatly enhance the effectiveness of UAVs for a variety of mission types.

The V-BAT Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) provided by Martin UAV is a fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft specifically designed to operate from very small spaces on ships, land, and nearly any environment. The V-BAT is a long-endurance aircraft capable of carrying multiple sensors, including land and maritime wide area surveillance.

Kongsberg Geospatial’s MIDAS is derived from technologies created for the NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance project which required the storage and retrieval of vast amounts of intelligence data for Intelligence Analysts. The system directly addresses the problem that the vast majority of UAVs have no standards-compliant capability to process, exploit, and distribute (PED) their sensor data where it is being used. MIDAS provides a fully standards-compliant system that allows intelligence analysts to view, process, and analyze sensor data in near real-time, from where the drone is being operated. MIDAS has packaged these capabilities into a tactical and portable form factor to enables those surveillance capabilities to be deployed as a portable system on board a ship, or in a temporary command post.

CINTIQS Military Technology Consulting will be providing consulting services for the planning and conduct of the flight trials and sensor employment to validate systems performance.

The combination of the Martin UAV V-BAT and the Kongsberg MIDAS sensor data management system will allow Coast Guard vessels to significantly expand their surveillance range for search and rescue missions, and for the surveillance of the movement of icebergs, without requiring the use of manned aircraft.

“UAVs are a useful tool, but they only truly effective if they can collect sensor data that results in actionable intelligence,” said Ranald McGillis, President of Kongsberg Geospatial. “Our MIDAS system allows users to fully exploit raw sensor data, and derive useful intelligence at the tactical edge where the UAV is being used. In a search and rescue context, that could mean using infrared sensors, or near real-time motion detection to locate a subject when visibility or weather conditions are poor.”

Navitas Cranks Up the Power with Gallium Nitride

News Image

GaNFast power ICs have been broadly adopted by tier-1 names like Lenovo, Dell, OPPO and Xiaomi for fast-charging mobile adapters up to 200W, with over 13,000,000 shipped and zero failures

Navitas Semiconductor today announced the NV6128, a new high-power 650V/800V-rated GaNFast power IC to address the high-power mobile and consumer power electronics market, and take market share from the old, slow, silicon chip. The 70 mOhm NV6128 represents a 66% increase in current capability, in a small, 6 x 8 mm PQFN package with a proprietary, integrated cooling pad for high-efficiency, high-density power systems.

Gallium nitride (GaN) is a next-generation semiconductor technology that runs up to 20x faster than old, slow silicon (Si), and enables up to 3x more power or 3x faster charging in half the size & weight. GaNFast power ICs integrate GaN power and drive plus protection and control to deliver the simplest, smallest, fastest and now even higher-power performance.

“GaNFast power ICs have been broadly adopted by tier-1 names like Lenovo, Dell, OPPO and Xiaomi for fast-charging mobile adapters up to 200W, with over 13,000,000 shipped and zero failures,” noted Gene Sheridan, Navitas CEO and co-founder. “With the higher-power NV6128, we extended the effective power range to 500W for the consumer market and look beyond that to multi-kW data center, eMobility and new energy applications.”

Unlike competing solutions, the NV6128 is rated at 650V for nominal operation plus a high, 800V peak capability for robust operation during transient events. As a true power IC, the GaN gate is fully protected and the whole device rated at an industry-leading electrostatic discharge (ESD) specification of 2kV.

“It’s a night and day comparison,” said Dan Kinzer, Navitas CTO/COO and co-founder. “Compared to current tier-1 OEM laptop adapters using old silicon in traditional diode rectification and boost PFC topologies at 50-70kHz, the GaNFast NV6128 enables a modern high-speed totem-pole architecture and complete 300W solutions at over 1.1W/cc. That’s up to 3x smaller and lighter with existing 200kHz control. When you crank up the speed to MHz+, you get another major step-increase in power density.”

For power electronics designers, the NV6128 and all the GaNFast power IC family offer easy-to-use, high-speed, high-efficiency solutions for 200-500W applications such as all-in-one PCs, TVs, game consoles, eMobility chargers (eScooters, eBikes), gaming laptops and more.

Design-support includes detailed datasheets, electrical models (SPICE), and mechanical models (.stp). The NV6128 is in high-volume, mass production and immediately available from Navitas distribution partners, with a low price of $7.85 at 1k units.

Aquiline Drones Begins Production of “Made in America” Drones

Stephanie Hernandez of East Hartford, Conn is one of 25 newly hired production technicians assembling American-made drones at Aquiline Drones in Hartford, Conn.

“Our goal is to not only position our country as a leader in the multi-billion-dollar global drone industry, but also, to reestablish America’s manufacturing dominance. This is in perfect harmony with our company’s powerful strategic vision of making Connecticut the drone capital of the nation.”

Aquiline Drones (AD) meets the increasing demand for “Made in America” drones by opening the first drone manufacturing and assembly plant in Connecticut. The Hartford-based aviation cloud solutions provider and commercial drone manufacturer now produces Drone Volt’s Altura Zenith and Hercules 2 drones – re-branded by AD as the Spartacus line of drones: Spartacus MACKS and Spartacus HURRICANE.

Last year, AD signed exclusive U.S. manufacturing, sales and distribution licensing agreements with Drone Volt (ALDRV.PA), a French drone manufacturer of professional civilian drones. AD also entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Drone Volt and Aerialtronics through a 10% stock/equity swap with these entities. Under the terms of a five-year deal with Drone Volt, Aquiline Drones becomes the sole manufacturer of the Pensar smart camera – a multispectral sensor, complete with artificial intelligence and edge computing capabilities, along with manufacturing the above-mentioned drones.

“Growing data security concerns over foreign-manufactured technology, mainly from China, has created an immediate need for increased drone production capacity in the United States,” said Barry Alexander, Chairman & CEO of Aquiline Drones. “Our goal is to not only position our country as a leader in the multi-billion-dollar global drone industry, but also, to reestablish America’s manufacturing dominance. This is in perfect harmony with our company’s powerful strategic vision of making Connecticut the drone capital of the nation.”

Alexander notes that AD now has a team of twenty-five technicians working in its new 7,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, drone manufacturing and assembly lab. This manufacturing team projects to double in the coming weeks to address the rapidly accelerating market demand for American-made drones.

Amid the pandemic, AD has employed several of its new manufacturing employees with the support of Capital Workforce Partners (CWP), a Hartford-based workforce organization with a statewide reach dedicated to helping businesses find, retain and grow the most qualified talent. CWP helps adults develop skills necessary to thrive in the state’s job market and directs them to employers seeking those talents.

Another highly effective platform utilized in identifying new employees was CT Hires, an online employment service hosted by the State of Connecticut Department of Labor. Besides receiving in-bound applications and resumes, CWP and CT Hires have been essential tools for AD’s hiring efforts. According to Alexander, “we are only as successful as the community which sustains us, and while we are in the process of changing the drone landscape on a global level, we are particularly committed to efforts supportive of our local community in whatever capacity necessary.”

AD occupies 15,000 square feet in the Stark Building, a historic architectural landmark located in Hartford’s financial district. The company is now constructing a street-level showroom and retail store for drones and sensors, as well as maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of various drone models. To address the economy’s growing demand for commercial drone technologies, ADs company-wide manufacturing expansion plans include:

  • Adding a second shift of production workers
  • Moving into a larger facility in Bridgeport, Conn
  • Sourcing of specific components from American-only suppliers.

“To quickly scale our commercial drone production capacity, our team decided to consolidate all manufacturing operations at our downtown Hartford headquarters to avoid the logistical challenges of managing a separate facility,” explained Alexander. “Safety and performance are key areas of focus in the UAV industry and this process enables us to maintain stringent quality control throughout the production cycle.”

Igniting the spark to build a new drone manufacturing ecosystem in the U.S. was The American Security Drone Act of 2019/2020, legislation co-authored by Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. This development paves the way for U.S.-based drone manufacturers – such as Aquiline Drones – to enter a red-hot industry growing at 13.8% annually. According to the FAA, drones represent the fastest-growing segment in the entire transportation sector.

AD’s new venture also comes on the heels of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ’s) announcement on October 9, 2020, officially banning the use of DOJ funds to purchase or operate any drone from ‘covered foreign’ countries. China is estimated to originate more than 70% of the global share of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) drones.

“We are delighted to be establishing ourselves as the domestic manufacturer in this terrific industry – building an entire drone ecosystem, pushing the limits of technology development and delivering useful capabilities, previously imagined, but never before seen,” said Alexander.

About Aquiline Drones

Aquiline Drones (AD) is an American drone and cloud solutions company located in the financial district of Hartford, Connecticut. Founded by highly experienced aviators, systems engineers, IT gurus, and business strategists, AD delivers a vertically integrated blend of products and services. Its ecosystem includes a hybrid aviation cloud with edge capabilities for commercial drones, US-based drone manufacturing, ‘maintenance-repair-overhaul’ services, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) solutions for large enterprises and governments.

Complimenting the company’s technology is its superior line of Spartacus AI drone products, a robust UAS training academy, and the country’s first ‘drone-on-demand’ service, enabling customers to order drone services through a proprietary mobile app. AD’s full-spectrum of technological solutions are widely applicable across industries and environments for superior, real-time data processing, modeling, and insight. Mobile technology studio Dogtown Media has been recognized as one of the top iPhone app development companies of 2021. Published by B2B research analyst Digital.com, the list features the top 15 candidates out of 160 organizations considered for the prestigious honor.

Founded in 2015, Digital.com has quickly become a leading source of information on small business online tools, products, and services. By collecting twitter comments and conducting sentiment analysis to score companies and their products, the firm has gained a reputation for sharp insights into what works best for businesses across a multitude of industries.

Mobile app development is one of the fastest-growing industries in the tech sector. Whether it’s to reach new customers, improve user experience, or keep an existing audience engaged, businesses turn to iPhone app developers for a variety of reasons. To identify the best of the best in this field, Digital.com poured over 40 hours of research into analyzing companies with top reputations across the internet.

Each candidate was required to provide an extensive range of services such as mobile app development, marketing, and UI/UX design. Candidates were also evaluated on their ability to meet the needs of both large and small businesses. Lastly, Digital.com also dug into the versatility of each development firm — more specifically, how well could they help companies across an array of industries. Dogtown Media’s successful track record in delivering dynamic iPhone apps that leveraged machine learning, fintech, and the Internet of Things (IoT) instantly made the firm a top contender.

“Making your service or software accessible to iPhone users requires an efficient and expert iPhone app developer,” says Christelle Feniza, Communications Manager of Digital.com. “This review guide was designed to help small business owners find top firms that can tailor services to meet their industry and needs.”

Besides being recognized as one of the best iPhone app developers of 2021, Dogtown Media was recently featured as a top mobile app developer in Los Angeles by Digital.com. These awards kick off another promising year for the innovative mobile app development firm, which was also honored to make the Clutch 1000 List of Best B2B Service Providers for the third year in a row.

Based in Venice Beach, California, Dogtown Media is a mobile technology studio that leverages disruptive design strategies and dynamic development to deliver industry-leading apps. To date, the company has created over 250 mobile apps in industries including Healthcare app development, IoT, and Artificial Intelligence.
