Network Thermostat Introduces New Universal Remote Sensor

Network Thermostat URS “Smaller, smarter, and simply installed”

The enhanced communication system allows for successful communication with many different cable types allowing for use in retrofit applications where new sensor cables cannot be installed.

Network Thermostat (NetX), a leading provider of networkable, smart thermostats and HVAC systems, today announced the immediate availability of its new NetX Surface Mount Universal Remote Temperature and Humidity Sensor (NT-USR). This latest release of thermostat technology represents the company’s commitment to serving ever-changing customer needs and its continued leadership in smart thermostat design and functionality.

Smaller, smarter, and simply installed, the new NetX USR (a replacement for the NT-TEMP & NT-HUM Remote Sensors) is an upgrade for customers looking to improve their facility’s temperature and humidity management. With an enhanced communication system, this innovation retrofits into existing systems smoothly where other sensors cannot.

Key enhancements include the ability to use multiple NT-URS sensors on the same thermostat, configured to any of several functions, including indoor (with automatic averaging), outdoor, and other independent temperature sensing. This sensor also incorporates both temperature and humidity sensing in the same device. Most commercial thermostats use analog remote sensors that only offer remote temperature sensing. Through the use of solid-state electronics, NetX digital sensors are able to detect both temperature and humidity simultaneously and have additional connections for auxiliary temperature sensors, making them ideal for supply air, walk-in refrigerators, and other specialized applications. The multi-function NT-URS features a built in LED that reports simple operation status and makes troubleshooting a breeze in any scenario.

Incorporating these sensors is a simple and painless process due to improvements in sensor housings and system communication systems. Significantly smaller than previous models, the new surface-mounted case, with a 60% reduction in size, no longer requires cutting sheetrock for installation. The enhanced communication system allows for successful communication with many different cable types allowing for use in retrofit applications where new sensor cables cannot be installed. By reducing intrusive installation and enabling enhanced communication the implementation process for the NetX replacement sensors is painless and effective.

Like other NetX solutions, these new temperature and humidity sensors are a perfect product for smart building automation in banks, factories, medical facilities, multi-dwelling units (MDU), schools (K-12) and universities, commercial offices and operations, retail sites, restaurants, and places of worship.

Made in the USA, these replacements are readily available at the same price as previous NT-TEMP models.

Camcorders and Mirrorless Cameras See Strong 2021 Sales Start Following Growth in the Second Half of 2020, According to NPD

“As U.S. consumers anxiously await a return to travel and experiences, there is opportunity for these categories to maintain their positive momentum as a means to capture these moments. We expect these segments of the market to continue to do well into 2021.”

New needs and new features have resulted in strong growth for segments of the imaging industry in the second half of 2020, as well as the first two months of 2021. According to The NPD Group Retail Tracking Service, camcorders and mirrorless camera unit sales in the U.S. were up 13% and 9%, respectively during the second half of 2020 (July – Dec.). This growth reached 24% and 18%, respectively, during the first two months of 2021.

“The growth we saw, and are continuing to see, in camcorders can in part be attributed to consumers purchasing as a webcam replacement – as product shortages became a challenge during the pandemic. Sales likely also saw a boost from consumers looking to stream gaming sessions and vlogging,” said Ben Arnold, executive director, industry analyst for The NPD Group. “While camcorder sales were driven in part by new imaging needs, mirrorless saw a boost from new product introductions from leading brands in the industry, as well as new features, such as enhanced resolution for recording video.”

New features, in addition to units with longer zoom and full frame sensors are driving up average sales prices (ASPs) of mirrorless cameras. In the second half of 2020, ASPs for mirrorless cameras were up 19%. As a result of increasing demand and rising ASPs, U.S. dollar sales of mirrorless cameras were up 30% in the second half of 2020 and 46% in the first two months of 2021 vs. the prior year periods.

“As U.S. consumers anxiously await a return to travel and experiences, there is opportunity for these categories to maintain their positive momentum as a means to capture these moments,” noted Arnold. “We expect these segments of the market to continue to do well into 2021.”

AUO’s comprehensive portfolio of cutting-edge sensing technologies will offer highly customized and flexible solutions.

The technology of 5G and AIoT drives the development of various innovative field applications as well as more diverse and smarter human-machine interface. As a leading optoelectronic solutions provider, by leveraging the profound technologies developed over the years, AUO will present a series of cutting-edge sensing technologies deriving from TFT technology in Touch Taiwan this time. For fingerprint scanning and sensing applications, AUO will showcase a TFT optical fingerprint sensor with the world’s highest pixel density of up to 1000PPI(*), the unique ultra-thin LTPS TFT optical fingerprint sensor module integrated under OLED panel with ultra-large sensing area, and the LCD panel with three-in-one integrated IC embedded fingerprint recognition, touch and display functions. In the exhibition, visitors can also look into other applications like the new NFC signal sensor and flexible plastic NFC tag fit for electronic equipment in the retail field, high resolution X-ray sensors using a-Si and LTPS (low temperature poly-silicon) process, respectively; and a flexible X-ray sensor for portable X-ray machine. A comprehensive portfolio of cutting-edge sensing technologies will be presented to offer highly customized and flexible solutions to meet the application demands of various fields.

Advanced NFC Sensing Technology Facilitating Mobile Payment and Smart Retail

Most of the payment sensors of existing electronic equipment such as POS and KIOSK are separated from the screen, demanding more space as well as different interfaces to receive payment signals and transmit information. By applying the special CIAA (circuit in active area) technology, AUO embeds the sensing component in the back of the panel to transform the screen into an NFC (near field communication) signal sensor, with a sensing distance up to 4cm. This technology already passed EMV3.0 L1 secure payment test. In the future, the electronic equipment carrying this new NFC sensor can transmit information on the screen and sense the payment signal simultaneously, allowing mutual communication between the consumer and the store system through a single interface. In addition, AUO will launch the world’s first(*) flexible NFC tag utilizing flexible ultra-LTPS technology. By employing the TFT process with large-area, the tag is beneficial to reduce production cost and increase utilization rate; the tag’s flexible nature also makes it especially fit for food or pharmaceutical packaging to effectively prevent counterfeits. The tag can also be used in transit tickets or game cards; users can easily access ticket or activity information by sensing the built-in NFC tag with a smartphone.

TFT Fingerprint Scanning Sensor with Ultra-high Pixel Density

More Rigorous Identity Authentication Achieved by Combination of Heartbeat Detection

As the security control of money flows becomes increasingly strict, identity authentication relying on a single fingerprint reader is no longer sufficient. This time, AUO will present the unique ultra-thin LTPS TFT optical fingerprint sensing module, with a sensing area of up to 2.9-inch, integrated under OLED panel and a 6.4-inch LCD panel incorporating finger recognition, touch and display functions. Besides the application of in-cell touch technology and a three-in-one integrated IC, the 6.4-inch LCD panel breaks through the limits when integrating CMOS image sensor structure to existing panels to offer a large customized sensing area of up to 50mm x 50mm. Both technologies support multi-finger authentication and are exceptionally ideal for financial transactions, as they can substantially improve the security of biometric recognition. In the meantime, AUO will also demonstrate a TFT optical fingerprint sensor with the world’s highest pixel density(*) up to 1000PPI, which can not only clearly recognize the fingerprints of delicate newborn baby fingers, but also detect the heartbeat through the slightest grayscale change of fingertip pulse to achieve a more accurate identity authentication and significantly improved security and anti-counterfeiting level.

High-quality Image Created by Novel Lightweight and Drop-proof X-ray Sensor Making Precision Medicine Possible

Strengthening its strategy of medical applications, AUO incorporates the TFT manufacturing advantages to the investment of X-ray sensor. This time, AUO will demonstrate the flexible X-ray sensor featuring lightweight and unbreakable properties, which can substantially enhance product durability and is perfect for portable X-ray machine. This sensor is expected to replace the market dominance position of glass sensors and drive curved X-ray applications used for CT scan and industrial pipe/tube detection. AUO’s 17×17-inch X-ray display applies a-Si process and possesses an extremely small pixel size of 100μm and 4302 x 4302 ultra-high resolution image to provide a larger display area with better image quality as well as assist a more accurate diagnosis of signs. Besides the traditional static X-ray used on chest and orthopedic diagnoses, the demands of dynamic and 3D imaging including blood and oral applications are increasing. To meet these demands, AUO releases a 6×6-inch X-ray display achieved by LTPS TFT process to deliver a higher refresh rate and lower image noise and provide a low-dose X-ray solution when it is necessary to take multiple dynamic images.

Focus on Display Technology and Seize the Opportunities of Field Economy with Cutting-edge Sensing Technologies

As a subset of PDF technology, PDF/R takes advantage of existing widespread support for viewing, printing and processing PDF files. As a domain-specific subset of PDF, it is simple to generate and interpret, allowing it to replace the TIFF and JPEG file formats for capture and delivery of scanner output. PDF/R provides the portability of PDF while offering the core functionality of TIFF, bitonal, grayscale and true color images. PDF/R fits well into existing workflows and is compatible so either existing libraries or newly developed frameworks can be used for embedded systems like firmware. PDF/R features include support for encryption and authentication, and is as extensible as PDF itself.

The project to create PDF/R was started by the TWAIN Working Group as part of its TWAIN Direct project to connect scanners to applications through networks. The PDF Association worked in conjunction with the TWAIN Working Group to develop and formalize PDF/R as an ISO Standard, published as ISO 23504 in late 2020. Although directly integrated into TWAIN Direct scanning technology, PDF/R can also be adopted as a standalone file format for use in other applications.

“Before PDF/R document scanning systems were based on image formats instead of document formats,” said Duff Johnson, CEO, PDF Association. “PDF/R delivers the advantages of PDF to all imaging workflows, allowing even low-cost scanners to produce PDF documents complete with metadata, encryption and digital signatures, if desired, straight from the scanner.”

“The PDF/R standard is a great replacement to the traditional TIFF and JPEG image formats supported by traditional scanning devices and applications. PDF/R delivers compact, high quality images from image acquisition devices providing efficient and secure delivery of documents over a network.”, said Joseph Odore, TWAIN Chair and Product Manager Document and Imaging, Office Products Business Unit of Panasonic Corporation.

About TWAIN Working Group

The TWAIN Working Group, established in 1992, is a not-for-profit association of industry leaders who have gathered to create a standard that benefits the imaging industry as a whole. TWAIN’s purpose is to provide and foster a universal public standard which links applications and image acquisition devices. The ongoing mission of this organization is to continue to enhance the standard to accommodate future technologies. TWAIN generates multiple opportunities for application developers and users to access information and broaden the standard; through a developer’s forum, main website and online self-certification process. Current members of the TWAIN Working Group include P3iD Technologies, Inc., Panasonic Corporation, ExactCODE GmbH, Fujitsu Computer Products of America Inc., InoTec GmbH Organisationssyteme, Kodak Alaris, Plustek, Inc., Atalasoft, Microtek, Inc., Dynamsoft, Epson America, Inc., LEAD Technologies and Hewlett Packard. More information about PDF/R, the TWAIN API and imaging standards can be obtained at pdfraster.org, twain.org and twaindirect.org.

About the PDF Association

Fastec High-Speed Cameras Save Time and Money via Intelligent Triggering

Fastec HS7 High Speed Camera

HS7 with FasTrigger

According to Tom Boldt, Director of Sales for Fastec Imaging, “doing a frame-by-frame analysis, it could, for example, be set to trigger on fast moving objects such as the strike of a rattlesnake and ignore the slower movements of the prey.”

Fastec Imaging, a global supplier of high-speed cameras for scientific and industrial applications is adding an intelligent image-based triggering feature to its HS series cameras. The triggering system is designed to aid the investigator in precisely capturing only desired high-speed events, thus saving the time and expense of storing and analyzing extraneous footage.

High-speed cameras record thousands of images per second, producing slow-motion video for analysis of events happening too quickly for human perception. At such high frame rates, the cameras produce massive amounts of image data in little time. For the industrial engineer troubleshooting machinery, or a laboratory scientist gathering experimental data, sifting through an enormous quantity of video in search of an elusive event is a time-consuming and expensive needle-in-a-haystack proposition.

If an event is predictable or precisely controlled, conventional triggers can be used to limit the number of images recorded. Fastec cameras have many strategies for triggering event captures, including timed triggering, signals from PLCs or PCs or other hardware, software triggers, and even a trigger button right on the camera.

When events are unpredictable, an image trigger can be used to initiate a capture using the images being recorded to decide when to start. Fastec has long supported a software image trigger that is capable of triggering on changes seen in a user-selected portion of the scene being filmed. “What is new,” according to Tom Boldt, Director of Sales for Fastec Imaging, “is that FasTrigger, our second-generation image trigger, is implemented in hardware so it is much faster and smarter than before. By doing a frame-by-frame analysis, it could, for example, be set to trigger on fast moving objects such as the strike of a rattlesnake and ignore the slower movements of the prey.”

According to Charles Mrdjenovich, President of Fastec, “while FasTrigger is a powerful productivity tool in its own right, it really comes into its own when paired with custom applications hosted on our controller or real-time image analysis implemented in the camera’s FPGA”.

FasTrigger is only available on Fastec’s HS series cameras. The first-generation software image trigger is available on Fastec’s IL and TS series cameras.
