DPI Labs First-to-Market with 55” and 65” UHD 4K Large-Format OLED Displays for Business Aviation and VVIP Aircraft Cabins

We’re proud to be first to bring the OLED large-format display technology and experience to the business and VVIP industry and continue our tradition of excellence and ingenuity.

California-based DPI Labs, Inc. announced today the availability of their new large-format 4K ultra-high definition (UHD), slim, ultra-lightweight, OLED displays for business and VVIP aircraft cabins.

Branded DPI SmartCanvas™, the 55” and 65” OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) cabin displays were installed in January, 2021 on a VVIP Boeing 767 at a completion center in Arizona. The installation included a complete DPI cabin management system consisting of passenger and cabin crew control panels, audio/video distribution, cabin control modules and DPI’s multi-colored LED cabin lighting. The new OLED large format displays are DO-160 compliant and PMA is expected within the next month.

“DPI Labs has a long history of firsts and innovation within the business and military aviation markets,” said Scott DeSmet, DPI’s VP Sales and Business Development. “We’re proud to be first to bring the OLED large-format display technology and experience to the business and VVIP industry and continue our tradition of excellence and ingenuity.”

Unlike LED technology, which has been traditionally installed in aircraft cabins for passenger information and entertainment, OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) have self-illuminating pixels and do not require the extra physical layers inside the display for backlighting that LED monitors do. This makes OLED displays much thinner, lighter and allows for infinite contrast ratio and a wide viewing angle.

For comparison, a typical 65” aircraft display using LED technology weighs about 75 pounds (34 Kg) and is about 2.0” (50.8 mm) thick, where DPI’s 65” OLED display weighs-in at just 24 pounds (10.89 Kg) and is only 0.36” (9 mm) thick. As a reference, a typical economy airline seat weighs between 74-84 pounds (33.6 – 38 Kg).

The displays’ low weights and extremely shallow depths have other considerable impacts on cabin design and overall aircraft weight. DeSmet explains, “Historically, in order to install screens this large using LED technology, the bulkhead would have had to be modified and significantly reinforced structurally in order to support the excessive mass. This adds even more overall aircraft weight and takes up additional cabin space. With our OLED displays we’re able to actually flush-mount them into a standard bulkhead, displacing bulkhead weight and material and take up zero cabin space. These are rare win-wins for our industry when we can both greatly enhance the passenger experience and reduce weight and installation time and cost.”

Another unique feature of DPI Lab’s ultra-thin OLED displays is their ability operate with a bend radius of 1 meter either horizontally or vertically allowing them to conform to curved surfaces such as aircraft headliners and sidewalls. This provides aircraft interior designers with exciting and interesting new applications for cabin installation.

DPI’s 55” and 65” are ultra-high definition 4K displays each with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. These resolutions paired with the displays’ infinite contrast ratio (the ratio between black and white on the screen) and wide viewing angle make them ideal for UHD video sources such as Blu-Ray, Sat-TV, Streaming Video Services or passengers’ downloaded UHD content.

The SmartCanvas Display Line is part of DPI’s SmartLink™ Cabin Management System which includes passenger controls, cabin switching modules, LED cabin lighting and HD-UHD audio-video distribution for both new aircraft installations and retrofitting legacy aircraft systems. The company plans on launching a 33” OLED Q3 of this year.

Star Refrigeration revealed as Gold Sponsor for the IOR Annual Conference 2021

We must now address our biggest threat – climate change. It is imperative that our industry acts quickly and adapts to its impact by strengthening our industry commitment to cutting emissions of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases.

The IOR Annual Conference has announced Star Refrigeration as a Gold Sponsor for its online event taking place from 21 to 22 April 2021. Several members of the Star team will also play an integral role as key speakers at the event, presenting alongside university academics and industry experts.

This year’s conference titled ‘The Journey to Net Zero Heating and Cooling – Beyond Refrigeration 2021’ not only aims to support businesses, the UK Government and individuals to achieve their environmental goals, it will also provide expertise used to develop a road map for non-technical specialist business owners. The event will provide a varied programme featuring case studies that demonstrate how the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump sector is responding to the challenge of net zero heating and cooling.

Star Refrigeration’s Group Sales and Marketing Director, Dr Rob Lamb, is set to open the conference, explaining why moving to net zero emissions is essential for the industry. Dr Lamb is a past Trustee of the Institute of Refrigeration and also serves as Chair of the Membership Committee. Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s recent BBC documentary, he will set out a roadmap to achieving net zero, aiming to reverse her statement “Without action there is no hope”, to “With action there is hope”.

Dr Lamb said, “Business and industry have such a crucial role to play in climate change. This event aims to offer guidance and expertise to businesses and professionals to really start making these vital changes to the refrigeration industry and the sectors it serves. The wheels are already in motion worldwide, and those businesses which don’t invest and plan for net zero will be left behind”.

“We have pulled together in the face of unprecedented global challenges, from the Covid-19 pandemic to the global recession, forcing us to adapt and modernise as a society. We must now address our biggest threat – climate change. It is imperative that our industry acts quickly and adapts to its impact by strengthening our industry commitment to cutting emissions of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases.”

The IOR conference is set to highlight the long-term challenges facing the refrigeration industry and the solutions readily available – such as ultra-low GWP refrigerants, better system performance, improved monitoring and more effective training for engineers.

Star Technical Solution’s Dermot Cotter and David Blackhurst will chair and lead workshops on ‘Learning how to measure impact with environmental, legislative and regulative auditing’ throughout the two-day conference, while David Pearson of Star Renewable Energy will co-host the informal chat ‘How to improve net energy in cities.’

Sharing the company’s years of experience in heat pump technology, Dr Andy Pearson is due to present a case study titled ‘River source heat pumps for residential and commercial heat networks’. It presents an overview of the performance achieved by Star’s river source heat pump at Queens Quay in Clydebank. Once again Star has successfully busted the myth that big heat pumps are not effective, not efficient and not reliable. The excellent performance at Queens Quay proves that large systems like this are readily available technology for district heating networks in the UK.

Dr Pearson said, “I’m honoured to have been invited by the IOR to present at the Annual Conference once again. I’m passionate about the key role heat pump technology can play in the decarbonisation of the country’s heat networks in order to make our homes, schools and hospitals greener, warmer and more energy efficient. This case study is a great example of what can be achieved with renewable energy sources”.

Attendees will have access to a comprehensive set of conference papers, live webinars of all presentations and recordings of all sessions for six months. The annual conference programme also offers networking opportunities within its coffee lounge discussion sessions.

Fees start at £50 + VAT per person with discounted fees available for students and delegates from Article 5 countries under the Montreal Protocol and the 7 countries with economies in transition.

Accion Systems TILE 2 In-Space Propulsion System to Launch on the June 2021 SpaceX Rideshare with Astro Digital and Starfish Space

Astro Digital’s Tenzing satellite with TILE 2 systems integrated [credit: Astro Digital]

Accion Systems today announces that two TILE 2 in-space propulsion system units will launch onboard an Astro Digital micro-satellite aboard the June 2021 SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare launch. Astro Digital’s Tenzing satellite is a rideshare satellite, hosting several payloads. Also included are two TILE 2 ion electrospray propulsion systems that will test on-orbit maneuvers in LEO and will test proximity operations maneuvers supported by Starfish Space software.

“Propulsive and RPOD technologies are critical to enabling the future of space missions,” said Chris Biddy, CEO of Astro Digital. “We are thrilled to support Accion Systems and Starfish Space with this important demonstration.”

The TILE propulsion system is uniquely superior to conventional electric propulsion, pioneering ionic liquid electrospray for commercial and government propulsion activities. The TILE 2 is the smallest system available, with unparalleled system SWaP (size, weight and power), that combines the use of a safe, inert liquid propellant and a simple mechanical design with few moving parts to create a propulsion system that is low-cost, compact, low pressure, and has less than 50% of the power draw of other propulsion technologies.

As part of the mission Accion Systems and Starfish Space will complete an on-orbit proximity operations demonstration. The team will combine Starfish’s CEPHALOPOD software and Accion’s TILE 2 thrusters, both already a part of the Tenzing mission, to work together to perform the first ever demonstration of rendezvous and proximity operations trajectories using low-thrust electric propulsion.

“Efficient proximity operations will enable a new set of activities in orbit,” said Austin Link, Co-Founder of Starfish Space. “Partnering with Accion on this test is key to validating our respective technical developments and showing they can work together.”

Starfish Space is commercializing their CEPHALOPOD software package, which opens up new opportunities for satellite rendezvous, proximity operations and docking (RPOD) missions. CEPHALOPOD is autonomous RPOD software that can use electric propulsion, enabling small RPOD spacecraft. This on-board guidance, navigation, and control capability gives small servicing vehicles eight times more maneuvering capability, which results in greater mission longevity and versatility.

“Precision proximity operations are critical for maintaining large constellations, refueling and repairing satellites in orbit, and countless other new space missions from in-space manufacturing to space tourism.” said Peter Kant, CEO of Accion Systems. “Combining Accion’s precise, modular thrusters with Starfish’s autonomy software will bring needed innovation to in-space navigation.”

Tomax Technology is Bringing Green IT to Aalborg

After undertaking extensive search across the continent, leading sustainable IT company Tomax Technology opted for Aalborg as the best location for their European base.

For the last 7 years Tomax Technology (https://tomaxtechnology.com) have specialised in selling on excess stock from the world’s leading IT manufacturers. The companies who buy the stock then sell it on to businesses, schools and government departments, and in this way the team at Tomax help manufacturers like Cisco utilise excess stock in a manner which chimes with their commitment to the circular economy. Our infrastructure and processes have been tailored to shift excess Cisco technology (https://tomaxtechnology.com/cisco-excess) into local markets at speed, saving time and cutting the dependency on air freight. At the same time, utilising excess stock in this way stops new equipment having to be produced, particularly when the excess stock comes with full territory licences, is manufacturer backed and carries a 3 months guarantee. We even got a name for it – #safesourcing – which reflects the fact that the equipment we supply can be trusted in a way that the grey or counterfeit technology market simply can’t.

Speaking about the decision to set up in Aalborg, Chief Commercial Officer Soren Sorensen explained how the city’s Green Transistion agenda aligned perfectly with the values of Tomax technology: “Aalborg offers us the opportunity to develop a facility that is completely sustainable and we’ll be speaking to businesses already located here to understand how best to do that. The network of sustainable businesses makes this an inspiring place for us to be, and we were attracted by Aalborg’s green port plan and superfast connectivity. I’m really excited to expand our team here and really fly the flag for Aalborg.”

Catharina Vinther Engqvist, the Director of Invest in Aalborg (https://investinaalborg.dk) was equally enthusiastic on the synergy between Tomax and Aalborg: “Aalborg is a tiny metropolis with a global mindset and we´re growing rapidly. We offer a highly skilled workforce, one of the best Tech Universities in Europe and have a huge focus on innovation and on The Green Transition. Tomax Technology is totally in scope for these key factors and we are very excited to welcome them to our city and region”

The approach taken by Tomax aligns perfectly with the mission of the team at Green Hub Denmark, who have promoted Aalborg as a centre of societal transition. Aalborg offers an entry for national and international businesses and researchers seeking to develop, test and create growth through the sustainable solutions and technologies of tomorrow.

The partners behind Green Hub Denmark have collectively poured 7.5 billion DKK into the initiative, which is connecting businesses, consumers, researchers, the utility sector and authorities to forge a world class platform for green growth and a green societal change. Through massive investments, the objective for Green Hub Denmark is to turn North Denmark into the Silicon Valley of green innovation.

The Tomax approach also reflects a growing awareness of the global problem of electronic waste (ewaste). According to the Global Ewaste Monitor 2020 53.6 metric tonnes of ewaste are thrown into landfill around the world, which is the equivalent of 7.3kg per capita. Shockingly, this so-called waste actually has value, and the team at Tomax specialize in tapping into that value. Our knowledge of the market enables us to build a picture of where the items are in demand, information which is augmented by close working relationships with our customers. Pulling all of this together means that our customers enjoy quick access to vital equipment, while manufacturer partners know that their circular economy principles are being met.

From the base in Aalborg, Tomax will be supplying over 25 countries across Europe. Investment in excess, reused and refurbished IT enables IT departments to play a part in contributing to the parent company’s commitment to zero carbon and wider sustainability. DigitalLead, which was created to strengthen digitalisation in Denmark and achieve the UN sustainable development goals, has a hub based in Aalborg, and the use of remanufactured, reused and excess technology directly aligns with several of their goals. We’re looking forward to working with Danish businesses in Aalborg and further afield, helping them to source more sustainable IT hardware and keep their existing hardware in use for longer.
