Team Cymru Announces Valuable Enhancement to its Global DDoS Mitigation Collaborative

News Image

Global 2000 companies and universities often operate their own networks and would benefit from being part of this collaborative effort. The more operators involved, the more Internet we can free from this malicious traffic says Steve Santorelli, Team Cymru Fellow and Head of the company’s Community

Today, Team Cymru announced a valuable update to its Unwanted Traffic Removal Service (UTRS), which is a global DDoS mitigation collaborative, comprised of more than a thousand network operators around the world. UTRS notifies ISPs and other network operators which traffic to block in the event of a DDoS attack on any one of its global members’ networks.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attackers aim to bring down a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming their target system or its network infrastructure with Internet traffic. The UTRS collaborative was created to address the attacks that overwhelm certain core infrastructure of the Internet.

When only one Internet service provider (ISP) null routes (or removes) incoming DDoS traffic, the attack is not stopped. The traffic is still impacting network operators as it traverses the Internet. This degrades their bandwidth and impacts their customers or employees.

However, when network operators null route in concert with each other, the attack can be stopped closer to its source and more of the route it would have taken is protected. This improves performance on the member networks.

Frequently, stopping these attacks involves null routing (removing) all traffic to a customer’s service. For example, the website of a small credit union may be taken down when attacks impact other network resources. “When an entire network suffers due to attacks against one customer, sometimes it makes sense to take down the attacked customer to keep the rest of the network up,” explained James Shank, Chief Architect of Community Services and Senior Security Evangelist.

The UTRS 2.0 enhancement allows members to stop DDoS attacks with more precise targeting of only the malicious traffic. So not only are they keeping their network infrastructure up and running, but they often can protect their clients’ applications and services, as well.

“ISPs and hosting providers are not the only network operators on the Internet,” stated Steve Santorelli, Team Cymru Fellow and Head of the company’s Community Services division. “Global 2000 companies and universities often operate their own networks and would benefit from being part of this collaborative effort. The more operators involved, the more Internet we can free from this malicious traffic, and the more we can prevent costly damages for our Internet users.”

Unwanted Traffic Removal Service Version 2 Enhancements

-FlowSpec rules: Creates fine grained control capabilities, allowing matches on ports and protocol combinations instead of just IP addresses.

-Allow IPv4 /25 and IPv6 /49 advertisements: Allows networks to defend against carpet bombing style attacks by requesting larger portions of their address space to be blocked.

-IPv6 support: Allows networks to defend against IPv6 attack traffic. Redundant peering sessions. Redundant peering sessions, prevent single points of failure in your security framework.

-ROAs are honored: Since we validate ROAs, we support BGP-triggered DDoS mitigation service providers, allowing your service providers to defend themselves and craft the most optimal rules.

Scratch Platform Introduces Standardized Market Valuations and Loans for NFTs

News Image

Scratch Platform’s APIs will also enable our partners and partnerships to help make the NFT marketplace a secure, stable, and scalable ecosystem.

Scratch — the NFT research, assessment, and loan company — is introducing Scratch Platform: the first platform to standardize the market value of NFTs by leveraging multiple public tools and data sets. The Scratch Platform backs up this valuation by offering investors the opportunity to take out loans with their NFTs as collateral.

According to Cointelegraph, NFTs are projected to have a trading volume of over $6 billion USD in January 2022, nearly double the previous all-time high of $3.5 billion USD in August 2021. But despite the success and high trading volume of NFTs, it’s a sector of the crypto economy that is lacking in standardized data research, asset valuations, and financial services.

Shawn Owens, Co-founder of Scratch provides further details on the goals of Scratch Platform:

“What it comes down to is trust. There is very little of it in NFTs right now, even with the massive trading volume they’re presently enjoying and—we anticipate—will enjoy well into the future. There needs to be a platform that engenders that trust with solid data and standardization of NFT valuation. Confidence is then necessary in that valuation, and we provide that with secured loans, giving investors increased liquidity to capitalize on other short-term crypto opportunities. In short, we’re putting our money where our mouth is, resolving issues no one else is.

But some of these problems we recognize we can’t—and won’t—solve on our own. Scratch Platform’s APIs will also enable our partners and partnerships to help make the NFT marketplace a secure, stable, and scalable ecosystem.”

The present roadmap has multiple development phases, each phase increasing the scale of the platform as well as introducing new features, and each culminating in a security audit to ensure stability before moving to the next phase. Further phases include the listing of Scratch Token on major exchanges, the BETA1 and BETA2 releases of Scratch Engine, the launch of Scratch Loans, and the final security audit before launching of the technology and Scratch APIs to the public.

Scratch Platform features:

—Scratch Value: A programmatic valuation solution for NFTs and digital assets using multiple market tools and the latest market data sets. This allows investors to receive real-time values on their NFTs and other digital assets.

—Scratch Loan: A first for NFTs, take out a loan of a percentage of the estimated NFT value on assets. Once assumed, the asset is stored in the Scratch Vault. Loan factors include: loan amount, length of loan term, NFT desirability and value, etc.

—Scratch Vault: The repository for all NFTs and digital assets loaned against. Scratch Vault assets are secured and insured to prevent loss of value. Transfer and cash-out options for investor assets will also be available.

—Scratch Gallery: A future marketplace that investors can shop our collection of NFTs and other digital assets. The Scratch Gallery collection is obtained from assumed loans and direct purchases from the Scratch Engine, and potentially assets from Scratch Partners.

Upon launch, the Scratch Token will be an ETH-based ERC 20 token, and other blockchain development is in process. This token will allow holders to stake tokens to receive reflections as we loan, sell, and buy NFTs directly and via partnerships. The token pre-sale launched on January 15th, and is only available at scratchengine.com. Per the roadmap, the public launch is scheduled for Q1 2022.

Free Annual Whitepaper on the 2021 Global Edtech Investment Available Now

Cover 2021GlobalEdtechInvestmentPatterns

2021GlobalEdtechInvestmentCover

“I have been publishing this annual whitepaper on global edtech investments every year since 2004,” comments Sam S. Adkins, Chief Researcher at Metariverse. “I have never seen such a surge in funding.”

A breathtaking $53.68 billion was invested in 1,284 edtechs across the planet in 2021. This is vastly higher than the funding made to edtechs in 2020: a record-breaking year at the time. The free whitepaper is called “The 2021 Global Learning Technology Investment Patterns: Gigantic Spike in Funding in 2021.”

“I have been publishing this annual whitepaper on global edtech investments every year since 2004,” comments Sam S, Adkins, Chief Researcher at Metariverse. “I have never seen such a surge in funding. While it would be easy to cite the pandemic as the root cause, particularly for the massive funding going to live remote Collaboration-based Learning firms, it does not explain the sharp spike in funding going to AI-based Learning and Game-based Learning companies.”

The Serious Play Conference (SPC) is the exclusive distributor of this Metariverse whitepaper. The free whitepaper has 71 pages, 8 tables, and 13 charts. The new edtech investment whitepaper is available for free here: https://www.seriousplayconf.com/downloads/metariverse_2021-global-learning-technology-investment-patterns/

In 2021, the US accounted for the vast majority of funding. Just over $40.04 billion went to US learning technology developers in 2021. This is 74% of all global investments made in 2021.

“Due to draconian regulations imposed on learning technology providers in mid-2021 in China that essentially gutted the learning technology industry,” comments Adkins. “The funding in China all but dried up in the second half of 2021. China accounted for only $2.21 billion in funding in 2021, down dramatically from the $11.52 billion invested in Chinese edtechs in 2020.”

In sharp contrast, India became the second-largest investment hub in 2021 with nearly double the funding made to Chinese companies. Just over $4.411 billion in capital flowed to 136 learning technology companies in India in 2021. Yet, 52% of this went to just one company; the online education juggernaut BYJU’S raised $2.262 billion in five rounds in 2021. ($1.2 billion of this was a term loan made to BYJU’S in November 2021.)

“Very high amounts were invested in a handful of companies in 2021,” adds Adkins. “Cambium Learning garnered the highest single amount at $2.15 billion in August 2021 with a direct loan made by the investment firm Blackstone. Articulate Global obtained $1.5 billion in June 2021. India’s Eruditus (Emeritus) raised $650.0 million in August 2021. Just over 154 companies raised at least $100.0 million in 2021.

Investments increased in all nine learning technology types in 2021, but they spiked dramatically for Collaboration-based Learning, AI-based Learning, and Game-based Learning. Investment in Cognitive Learning companies tripled in 2021 compared to the year before.
