New Study Reveals One In Three SMBs Use Free Consumer Cybersecurity And One In Five Use No Endpoint Security At All

Award-winning BullGuard is a cybersecurity company focused on the consumer and small business markets. We make it simple to protect everything in your digital life.

“Small businesses are not immune to cyber attacks and data breaches and are often targeted specifically because they often fail to prioritize security,” said Paul Lipman, CEO of BullGuard. “It only takes one attack, however, to bring a business to its knees.”

New research commissioned by and published today by cybersecurity company, BullGuard, revealed an alarming number of small businesses in the US and UK are not prepared for a potential cyber attack or breach. One-third of companies with 50 or fewer employees report using free, consumer-grade cybersecurity, and one in five companies use no endpoint security whatsoever. Additionally, worrisome, the study found 43% of SMB owners have no cybersecurity defense plan in place at all – leaving their most sensitive financial, customer and business data, and ultimately their companies, at significant risk.

“Small businesses are not immune to cyber attacks and data breaches, and are often targeted specifically because they often fail to prioritize security,” said Paul Lipman, CEO of BullGuard. “Caught between inadequate consumer solutions and overly complex enterprise software, many small business owners may be inclined to skip cybersecurity. It only takes one attack, however, to bring a business to its knees.”

The study also revealed some glaring discrepancies between what SMB owners believe versus what is actually occurring in the market. Nearly 60% of SMB owners believe their business is unlikely to be targeted by cyber criminals, however the results revealed that 18.5% of SMB owners have suffered from a cyber attack or data breach within the past year. Unfortunately, while securing data can be simple, remediation is not. Companies that fall victim to a cyber attack often experience significant downtime that seriously impacts productivity, data privacy, and even revenue. Once breached, 25% of SMB owners stated they had to spend $10,000 or more to resolve the attack, which could be devastating for a small company. As for time lost, 50% of SMB owners said it took 24 hours or longer to recover from a breach or cyber attack, while 25% reported they lost business as a result, and almost 40% stated they lost crucial data.

Despite these numbers, many SMB owners are overly confident in the safety of their company and customer data. One in five SMB owners surveyed stated their organization has zero vulnerabilities, however 50% of SMB owners stated their employees do not receive any cybersecurity training.

A significant number, 65%, of SMB owners report managing their cybersecurity in-house, but less than 10% say they have a dedicated IT staff member. The right solution makes it simple and extremely cost-effective for SMBs to manage their own cybersecurity, ensuring their business is secure and protected.

Conducted in January 2020, the BullGuard-commissioned survey queried a total of 3,083 small business owners in the US (1,551) and the UK (1,532) with 50 employees or less. A press kit including graphs, charts, logos and other assets related to the research study can be accessed here.

84% of Employers find Cybersecurity Certifications that align with Military Job Roles as the Gold Standard for Hiring

EC-Council’s sole purpose is to build and refine the cybersecurity profession, globally. EC-Council helps individuals, organizations, educators, and governments address global workforce problems throu

Cyber threats are growing exponentially, and IT employers must ensure that the candidates they are hiring possess the proper education and skills to take on these threats

A new survey from University of Phoenix and the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) found that 59% of surveyed companies with 100 or more employees plan to staff information security professionals in 2020. However, candidates in the job market may not have the skills employers are seeking. According to the survey, 67% of IT executives at companies with at least 100 employees or more require industry certifications as a basic requirement for hiring considerations.

The joint survey aimed to uncover IT employers’ perceptions during the hiring process. The findings highlighted the importance of cybersecurity degree programs paired with stackable credentials aligned to military job roles and occupations. Of the 256 IT employers who were polled, 86% said that industry certifications aligned to cyber-affiliated U.S. military job roles and occupations play an important role when hiring candidates. In fact, almost half (48%) agreed they are either very important or absolutely essential and 84% consider them to be the “gold standard” when hiring

“Cyber threats are growing exponentially, and IT employers must ensure that the candidates they are hiring possess the proper education and skills to take on these threats,” said Stephanie Benoit-Kurtz, lead cybersecurity faculty at the University’s Las Vegas Campus. “Organizations often don’t have the time or funding to invest in developing employees, and these industry certifications often provide the minimum standards to prepare professionals to combat today’s cyber threats.”

Highly regarded cybersecurity industry certifications with aligned job roles and outcomes may be easier to obtain than you think. The survey found that nearly all IT executives (91%) said that they would be likely to provide tuition assistance to an employee seeking to earn a degree that helps prepare for industry certification aligned to U.S. military job roles and occupations.

“We tend to look at the bigger picture of career opportunities as a nation, when we should be focusing on what skills and credentials employers’ value most when considering a candidate,” said Wesley Alvarez, director of academics, EC-Council. “As much as they love to hack, it is paramount that graduating students who achieved these challenging credentials understand how to harness their skills in a professional environment.”

To help prepare the workforce for today’s cybersecurity positions, University of Phoenix and EC-Council have worked together to provide students with opportunities that focus on degrees which help prepare students for industry certifications. The University offers an Associate in Cybersecurity and electives that are aligned to EC-Council certifications. In October, the University received the EC-Council Academia Circle of Excellence Award for its suite of EC-Council certifications. They include:

In addition to these offerings, University of Phoenix this month announced the launch of a certificate in cybersecurity policy and governance aligned to the Certified Chief Information Security Officer Certification (CCISO). The CCISO is an industry-leading certification that helps prepare professionals to succeed in the highest level of information security.

During the polling, IT employers were asked which industry certifications they believe employees should possess and 44% said the Certified Chief Information Security Officer certification. The Certified Network Defender received 38% and Certified Ethical Hacker received 23%.

“The College of Business and Information Technology is dedicated to providing working adult learners access to the education and skills that are in high demand in today’s industries. These certifications can help prepare professionals to stay one step ahead of cyberattackers,” said Kevin Wilhelmsen, dean of the College of Business and Information Technology. “The CCISO and other certification aligned programs are designed to help working adults balance work and life. Not only will they receive the technical foundation but be able to continue to work in their industry while pursuing their program.”

To learn more about the cybersecurity degrees and certificates offered at University of Phoenix, visit phoenix.edu/degrees/technology/cybersecurity.

Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of University of Phoenix from October 10 – 21, 2019 among 256 U.S. adults aged 18 and older who are employed full-time at a company with 100 or more employees, work in IT, and have the job titles of CTO, CIO, Chief Security Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, Information Security Manager, Director of Information Security, or Cybersecurity Manager. Data were weighted where necessary by employee size to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. For the purposes of this report, qualified respondents will be referred to as “IT executives.” For complete survey methodology, please contact cooper.nelson@phoenix.edu.

Risk Based Security’s VulnDB team aggregated 22,316 newly-disclosed vulnerabilities in 2019. 37.3% of vulnerabilities had available exploit code or a Proof of Concept

“Patch Tuesday was created by Microsoft and it rolled out patches in a more scheduled and consistent manner. However, as the years have passed, more and more vendors are not only co-opting the concept of Patch Tuesday, but the day itself,” said Brian Martin, VP of Vulnerability Intelligence for RBS.

Risk Based Security today released their 2019 Year End Vulnerability QuickView Report which encompasses the trends occurring within the computer vulnerability disclosure landscape. Risk Based Security’s VulnDB team aggregated 22,316 newly-disclosed vulnerabilities during 2019, finding that 37.26% had available exploit code or a Proof of Concept and that 33.43% of all vulnerabilities in 2019 had a CVSSv2 score of 7.0 and above.

Risk Based Security also identified a total of 302 vulnerabilities impacting Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), 289 of which have no known solution.

“As with any device that relies on code, there are vulnerabilities that can affect the system’s integrity and you don’t want anyone tampering with them. Only 13 EVM vulnerabilities have a known solution. To make matters worse, of those, only one has a CVE ID assigned and can be found cataloged in the U.S. National Vulnerability Database” commented Brian Martin, Vice President of Vulnerability Intelligence at Risk Based Security. “EVMs with vulnerabilities have been used in past elections, and will no doubt be used again in our next elections. It doesn’t matter what politics or beliefs you subscribe to; the essence of democracy is a free, fair and secure election that captures the will of the people. The lack of visibility on this issue should be of deep concern to every American.”

The full research is highlighted in the just released 2019 Year End Vulnerability QuickView Report. Additional key findings comment on the increasing amount of vulnerability disclosures being released on the same day due to “Patch Tuesday”. With 2019 reaching an all-time high of 327 vulnerabilities being disclosed in a single day, Risk Based Security maintains that the practice, despite its initial good intentions is turning into a “nightmare” for many organizations.

“Patch Tuesday was created by Microsoft and it rolled out patches in a more scheduled and consistent manner. However, as the years have passed, more and more vendors are not only co-opting the concept of Patch Tuesday, but the day itself,” Mr. Martin concludes. “What started with Microsoft has turned into a storm of vendor disclosures from major vendors like Adobe, SAP, Siemens, and Schneider Electric. More companies are starting to release on Patch Tuesday as well as at other times. Those vendors include Google, Apple, Mozilla, Intel, Cisco, F5, and Juniper. All of those potential releases are in addition to the typical disclosures seen on any “average” day.”

MOBI Hosts 9th Colloquium on the New Economy of Movement

MOBI tirelessly brought together major US/Japanese car OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, united in a common goal, to solve seemingly intractable problems from traffic congestion to securely sharing vehicle telematics, using the power of blockchain technology – in less than 2 years of existence!

Attendees of The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative [MOBI] on May 19th-20, 2020 in Los Angeles, CA will have access to two days of specialized speaker sessions from key industry players in the mobility and blockchain sector, emerging technology demonstrations, and networking opportunities. The event’s topics will focus on “The New Economy of Movement”, enabled by the convergence of connected vehicles, smart cities, decentralized finance, and other rapidly emerging technologies. Together, these technologies give cities the ability to manage and maintain infrastructure on distributed ledgers, charge for road use, congestion, carbon emissions, and solve many of the most intractable urban mobility challenges. In this ecosystem vehicles have a digital twin, are able to communicate with other vehicles, and can pay for infrastructure as they move. Users are rewarded for greener transportation methods through their vehicle wallets.

“One day people are going to wake up and realize that there are better ways to get around, ways that are simpler, cheaper, more sustainable, appealing, and more fun than the ones they chose yesterday,” said Tram Vo, MOBI Founder and COO. “If existing mobility companies don’t create the standards, payments, and platform for this new mobility, others will quickly fill the void, and today’s mobility leaders will have permanently forfeited their natural competitive advantage.“

MoCo Los Angeles 2019 laid the groundwork for assessing the value potential of blockchain and the role of a cross-industry and public participation to develop standards for future mobility ecosystems. The 2019 speaker roster was stacked with the world’s largest OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, technology companies, consulting firms, academic institutions, and innovative thinkers. MOBI’s partner OEMs – BMW, Daimler, Denso, Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, and others – discussed the importance of testing use cases for a blockchain-based Vehicle Identity, a Connected Data Marketplace, and Electric Vehicle Grid Integration. Daimler, ZF, and Filament shared insight on their research on car wallets. And MOBI offered a first-look into the Citopia application for smart-city infrastructure in the exhibition hall. Other specialized industry sessions were led by speakers from the Tapscott Group, Tendermint Labs, SilaMoney, Amazon Web, the City of Los Angeles, Toyota AI Ventures; and many more. MoCo Los Angeles 2020 will provide an equally diverse set of innovative minds.

“MOBI tirelessly brought together major US/Japanese car OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, united in a common goal, to solve seemingly intractable problems from traffic congestion to securely sharing vehicle telematics, using the power of blockchain technology – and they did all this in less than 2 years of existence!” Sumita Jonak, Blockchain and Innovation Researcher, University of Texas/National Security Agency

MoCo Los Angeles 2020 will also offer exclusive looks into MOBI’s recently launched working groups. The Supply Chain working group, chaired by OEMs, BMW and Ford, is focused on researching the potential of blockchain technology across automotive supply chains. The Finance, Securitization, and Smart Contracts working group, chaired by the global law firm, Orrick Herrington LLC and RouteOne, was created to assess the potential value proposition of blockchain, work on standards, and potentially, help coordinate logistics necessary to carry out a pilot program for use cases in finance and securitization.

MoCo Los Angeles 2020 aims to foster collaboration between the public and private sector to leverage emerging technology – AI, IoT, and blockchain – for the future of mobility. As OEMs, private businesses, and cities are pushing to innovate, MoCo Los Angeles 2020 provides an environment in which forward-thinking companies can exhibit their research and technology, network with other industry players, share their vision, and spark important dialogue.
