Enterprises Are Creating Over 6,500 Files Containing Sensitive Data Every Day, Reveals Lepide 2020 State of Data Security Report

The State of Data Security 2020

The State of Data Security 2020

All it takes is for one file containing sensitive data to be copied outside of the organization for a serious data breach to occur

Lepide, a leading provider of data security solutions, today released a report that reveals an alarming insight into the risks facing data security in enterprises across the globe, as well as insight into how unprepared most organizations are to mitigate those risks. In particular, the report, 2020 State of Data Security Report from Lepide, found that enterprises have, on average, more than 6,500 files containing sensitive data created, and more than 1,600 file server modifications made every day.

Read the full report.

The report, which was based on more than 500 Risk Analysis Reports conducted by Lepide over the course of 2019 for customers and potential customers on their critical infrastructure, highlights several key problems that need addressing in the world of data security and compliance, in particular:

  • The lack of visibility over where sensitive data is, what sensitive data is being created and which users have access to this sensitive data.
  • Large numbers of privileged users with access to sensitive data that should not have or do not need this access.
  • Stale and sensitive data that is improperly managed and protected in accordance with compliance standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI, CCPA and more.
  • Huge attack surfaces created by inactive users.
  • Huge numbers of users with passwords that never expire creating easing hiding places for hackers.

The findings from the report include:

  • 71% of companies have over 1,600 file server modifications made every day.
  • 44% of companies have over 100,000 failed logons every day.
  • 71% of companies have over 1,000 inactive users.
  • 31% of companies have over 1,000 users with passwords that never expire.
  • 91% of companies have over 1,000 “stale”, sensitive files.
  • 77% of companies have over 5,000 “stale”, sensitive files.

“This report confirms what we have been seeing for years with enterprises of all sizes,” says Aidan Simister, CEO of Lepide. “All too often organizations have struggled to determine where their sensitive data is, who has access to it and what their users are doing with it. Native tools do not provide this insight and many vendors are far too expensive or too complicated to effectively deploy and gleam useful insights from.

All it takes is for one file containing sensitive data to be copied outside of the organization for a serious data breach to occur. We hope that this report can raise awareness about how much more visibility is required over data to detect threats, prevent breaches and achieve and maintain compliance standards.”

ABOUT THE 2020 STATE OF DATA SECURITY REPORT

Over the course of 2019, Lepide conducted over 500 risk assessments with enterprises (over 1000 employees) in 17 different countries across the globe. The findings have been combined to shed some light on the current state of data security in 2020.

Prestige Maintenance USA Achieves CIMS and CIMS-GB Certification

“The clients we work with have high standards, and this certification helps us communicate to them that we are able to meet and exceed their standards of excellence.” Rachel Sanchez, Prestige Maintenance USA CEO

ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, announced today that Prestige Maintenance USA achieved ISSA Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) and CIMS-Green Building (GB) certification.

Compliance with the standard shows that a cleaning organization has the systems in place to deliver consistent, professional services designed to meet customer needs and expectations and is prepared to deliver a comprehensive green cleaning program based on LEED EB: O&M green cleaning criteria. CIMS and CIMS-GB certification are required in many cleaning service bid specifications as customers look for an effective way to identify high-quality providers committed to customer satisfaction.

“The clients we work with have high standards, and this certification helps us communicate to them that we are able to meet and exceed their standards of excellence. Our processes and procedures ensure that every team member across the country can deliver for our clients, including LEED EB green cleaning criteria,” says Rachel Sanchez, CEO of Prestige Maintenance USA.

Independent, accredited assessors verify CIMS and CIMS-GB certified firms meet the industry standard for:

  • Quality systems
  • Service delivery
  • Human resources
  • Health, safety, and environmental stewardship
  • Management commitment
  • Green Building

Recently, CIMS-GB became a direct compliance option to meet the green cleaning policy prerequisite of Version 4 of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) revised Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED EB: O&M) rating system.

“Our use of technology and analytics gives us an edge in maintaining our high standards. Our clients get access to monthly inspections online in addition to the ability to communicate changes or needs to us. We know that our reputation depends on reliability and excellence, and we take it very seriously,” according to Jason Dinverno, Managing Partner and COO at Prestige Maintenance USA.

For more information about CIMS and CIMS-GB certification, visit http://www.issa.com/standard.

The standard is nonprescriptive, meaning that each organization has the flexibility to choose the most effective ways in which to meet its requirements. CIMS and CIMS-GB were created through a true consensus-based process that brought together representatives of the cleaning, facilities management, and purchasing communities. ISSA speaks at numerous facility management and purchasing industry events throughout the year to outline the value of working with CIMS and CIMS-GB certified cleaning companies, as well as certifying in-house operations.

Otus Releases Enterprise Analytics Tools for the K-12 Sector

The all new historical analytics feature in Otus.

Every industry in the world has a way to measure performance in real-time, except for education.

Otus, the fast-growing edtech company based in Chicago, announced today the release of two transformational data analytics tools: Historical Analytics and the Otus Data Consortium.

Historical Analytics is designed to give school and district leaders a simplified way to see trends in student academic performance, engagement and social-emotional development, and ultimately the impact these have on state and local assessments over time.

The Otus Data Consortium allows neighboring or like-minded school districts to share and compare their student performance data using their own criteria. In practice: a High School Principal can generate a report instantly to see all of the student data from every feeder middle school in minutes. This allows school leaders to develop better plans for incoming students, and eliminates countless face-to-face meetings with incomplete data.

“Every industry in the world has a way to measure performance in real-time, except for K12 education. This means that schools are being run by leaders who, by no fault of their own, are forced to make decisions using incomplete or stagnant data, like state-test scores,” said Andy Bluhm, CEO and Co-Founder of Otus. “With Otus, school and district leaders can pair student performance on infrequent high-stakes and benchmark assessments with real-time classroom data on how students are performing each day. By providing a complete learning picture, administrators have the foundation to continuously improve educational outcomes more rapidly than ever before .”

The challenge to seeing data in real-time, is the ability to collect data in real-time. Otus has overcome this challenge by building dozens of teacher-friendly tools that seamlessly integrate into one platform. Otus encourages frequent use by teachers by eliminating the need to bounce from one disconnected app to another to complete all of tasks associated with their jobs. From grading assignments to texting families, all of these tasks live in one place: Otus.

As Otus is used by teachers and students, performance data is organized, aggregated and paired with legacy data (state tests, college entrance exams, benchmark assessments) and made available for an infinite number of analyses in real-time so that critical decisions can be made based on the best and most accurate information.

In addition to detailed data analysis (gender, student subgroup, ethnicity/race, extracurriculars, etc.) that individual school systems can practice with their own students, Otus also released the Otus Data Consortium tool which gives school districts the ability to share their data with one another for cross-district analysis and idea sharing.

“As K12 educators work to collaborate, the ability to compare a single district to similar school systems, or to schools anywhere in the world using a common set of data, is critical” said Dr. Keith Westman, COO of Otus.

“We have several school systems representing some of the largest and smallest districts in the country who were given early access to our analytics tools,” said Christopher Hull, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder. “The conversations that are happening in districts as a result of what the data is showing have been powerful. Teachers are seeing the results of their work in entirely new ways which have led to better conversations about student learning.”

With this product release, current and future Otus clients have access to these powerful new analytics tools that shine a light, creating a clear path forward to maximize student learning.

Allegro Software Announces TLS API Compatibility Layers to Speed IoT Development with TLS v1.3 and FIPS 140-2

Allegro ACE FIPS 140-2 Validation

Allegro Logo

Improving IoT device security with the latest technology is important for reducing related risks and building trust around projected business outcomes derived from IoT ecosystem data

At the RSA® Conference 2020 in San Francisco, California, Allegro Software, a leading supplier of security and connectivity software for the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced additions to the Allegro EdgeSecure Suite™ that provide Transport Layer Security (TLS) API compatibility for ARM’s Mbed™ TLS and Open Source Software OpenSSL. A member of the larger Allego EdgeAgent Suite™ of embedded software toolkits, the Allegro EdgeSecure Suite of products enable IoT edge device developers with advanced security technology specifically engineered for resource constrained execution environments. The Allegro EdgeSecure Suite now includes an API compatibility layer for ARM developers looking for TLS v1.3 and FIPS validated cryptography while protecting their existing investment in application software. The Allegro EdgeSecure Suite also includes an API compatibility layer for device developers using Open Source Software OpenSSL with requirements for TLS v1.3 and FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography. The Allegro EdgeSecure Suite and larger Allegro EdgeAgent Suite are delivered as ANSI-C source and are available to quickly implement TLS v1.3 and FIPS validated cryptography with IoT edge devices.

API COMPATIBILIY WITH ARM’S MBED TLS

ARM® technology is used by billions of people, across billions of devices, every single day. To help achieve this milestone, ARM recognized the need to remove the complexities of creating IoT edge devices. Their answer, a collection of pre-integrated software components starting with the Mbed OS surrounded with supporting technology stacks including Mbed TLS v1.2. Providing an API compatibility layer for Mbed TLS, the Allegro EdgeSecure Suite further removes the complexity of migrating to the latest TLS v1.3 while also adding FIPS validated cryptography. Together these two technologies enable developers to improve IoT edge device security and reduce related risks while preserving any potential source code investment made integrating to the Mbed TLS API.

API COMPATIBILITY WITH OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE OPENSSL

If you have a requirement for TLS v1.3 and FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography and also have a significant internal investment in source code integrated to the OpenSSL API, Allegro Software can help. With the addition of an OpenSSL API compatibility layer to the Allegro EdgeSecure Suite, device developers can rapidly deploy TLS v1.3 and FIPS validated cryptography in their IoT edge devices with little to no change to their source code. Unlike OpenSSL, the Allegro EdgeSecure Suite and the Allegro Cryptography Engine (ACE™) provide a stable API and long-term solution for FIPS 140-2 (and soon to be 140-3) validation. Originally engineered for resource constrained IoT environments, ACE can be used stand-alone or pre-integrated with the entire Allegro EdgeSecure Suite of IoT edge device security components.

“Improving IoT device security with the latest technology is important for reducing related risks and building trust around projected business outcomes derived from IoT ecosystem data,” says

Bob Van Andel, President of Allegro. “Using the Allegro EdgeSecure Suite with the supplied compatibility layers enables developers to retain their investment in IoT ecosystem source code while moving forward with the latest TLS v1.3 and FIPS validated cryptography.”

The full Allegro EdgeAgent Suite is provided as ANSI-C source code and is available today. For more information, stop by the Allegro Software Booth #4610 or visit the Allegro Software website: https://www.allegrosoft.com
