Cybereason Celebrates National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Cybereason, a leader in endpoint security, today announced its lineup of events and activities in conjunction with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Cybereason will be participating in a variety of virtual events geared to preventing cyberstalking, bringing equity into cybersecurity education and how to be more secure in a remote working world.

“Is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month still relevant? Yes, it is, but it should be more than an opportunity to bombard the rest of your company with reminders to be wary of phishing emails or to ‘think before you click.’ Instead, this is an opportunity to push the boundaries of cybersecurity awareness in three key ways: expand the audience for awareness, produce deeper and more meaningful messages and focus on solving for security issues through innovation, especially around emerging technologies,” said Sam Curry, Cybereason’s Chief Security Officer.

Featured events and activities include:

Monday, October 19, 9:00 am ET

Cyberweek Tel Aviv: Mor Levi, Cybereason’s Vice President of Global Security Practices, will join with other esteemed industry experts in a panel titled ‘Analogue Humans in a Digital World’ in which the panelists will discuss the minefield of security risks associated with remote working. How do companies ensure security for a workforce that isn’t always ‘security focused’? Joining Levi on the panel is Bruce Schneier, Fellow and Lecturer, Chief of Security Architecture, Harvard Kennedy School, Inrupt, Inc.; Chris Roberts, Hillbilly Hit Squad, Advisor, Researcher, Hacker and Christopher Hadnagy, CEO and Founder, Social-Engineer, LLC. Cyber Week Tel Aviv is one of the largest cybersecurity conferences in the world. This year the event is entirely virtual.

Wednesday, October 21, 1:00 pm ET

Cybertalks: A Daily Digital Experience: Lodrina Cherne, Cybereason’s Principal Security Advocate and Certified Instructor, SANS Institute, will give a standalone talk at Cybertalks titled The Language of Equity in Cybersecurity Education. The session will look at the global cybersecurity skills shortage and how it intersects with the worldwide movement for equity, inclusion and justice, and why it requires the security industry to support a diverse workforce. Cherne will offer ideas on how to create an inclusive environment for people traditionally underrepresented in security by changing the language we use in software, standards, and policy.

Thursday, October 22, 1:00 pm ET

Virtual Panel on Cyberstalking Prevention

On Thursday, October 22, 1:00 pm ET, Cybereason will host a virtual panel titled ‘Prevent Cyberstalking’ hosted by Lodrina Cherne of Cybereason. The esteemed panelists include Amy Harman-Burkhart, a former chief of the Cybercrime Unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) in Boston and Michael Maher, a detective with the Waltham, MA Police Department. Harmon-Burkart spent a decade investigating and prosecuting computer, intellectual property and financial crimes. Maher is an investigator in the Detective Division for Waltham Police Department. The two panelists will discuss their work in bringing a cyberstalker to justice in a recent federal case.

New Study Discovers the Secret to Successful Student/Professor Connections in Online College Classes

“We found that camera angle was most important for the social presence of a class. If there’s a really weird camera angle, looking at [the instructor’s] forehead or sinus cavity, it takes away from their credibility or their social presence.”

College students, especially recently, are wondering: will I actually be able to form a connection with my professor if my classes are online?

ODUOnline’s assistant vice president for technology Dr. Miguel Ramlatchan conducted a study to find out. In a recent article titled, “Enhancing Instructor Credibility and Immediacy in the Design of Distance Learning Systems and Virtual Classroom Environments” which appeared in the Journal of Applied Instructional Design, Ramlatchan detailed what he and his co-writer discovered, and the results might surprise you.

“We found that camera angle was most important for the social presence of a class,” he said. “If there’s a really weird camera angle, looking at [the instructor’s] forehead or sinus cavity, it takes away from their credibility or their social presence.”

Ramlatchan and his team examined several aspects of online learning which may play a part in how a student may view the credibility of an instructor. It wasn’t subject matter or the academic program that created a disconnect, so don’t worry about “boring” material. The age group of the students, whether or not they were used to online classes, or what type of device they used wasn’t as important either. It was all about how the camera was placed.

“Eye-level is the best scenario,” said Ramlatchan, before describing that good “eye contact” for a professor in an online lesson can enhance verbal cues, visual cues, tone, and expression. “These are all important to communication in general,” he explains, “but especially instruction.”

Ramlatchan oversees Old Dominion University’s Academic Technology Services department, which supports technology for online learning. This could involve everything from making sure ODU’s online professors have the correct camera equipment to setting up and managing complex streaming events with hundreds of participants.

Old Dominion University, located in the coastal city of Norfolk, is Virginia’s entrepreneurial-minded doctoral research university and has been delivering distance-learning programs for 30 years. It offers more than 100 programs through ODUOnline in a variety of formats, allowing students to complete degree programs across the world. ODU serves more than 24,000 students annually by providing the same rigorous academics online and on-campus. Learn more about ODUOnline’s programs by visiting online.odu.edu.

Elev8 Cannabis Announces Grand Opening in Athol, Massachusetts

We believe we’ve created both a safe and exciting retail space for the Athol community, Seun Adedeji, Elev8 Cannabis Founder and CEO

Elev8 Cannabis, an emerging adults-medical cannabis company with one dispensary in Eugene, Oregon, and three others to open by spring 2021 in Massachusetts, announced today the grand opening of its first Massachusetts dispensary. A ribbon-cutting ceremony begins at 1 pm at the dispensary. Its address is 243 Main St., in the city of Athol. Elev8 Cannabis is the first dispensary to open in the city and is the first African American-owned cannabis retail dispensary in western Massachusetts. With today’s announcement, Elev8 Cannabis becomes one of the largest African-American-owned cannabis chains and dispensaries in operation coast to coast.

Elev8 Cannabis Athol Grand Opening

The grand opening festivities will welcome customers inside its store with music, opportunities to meet the staff, and a chance to peruse and shop from an array of fully stocked shelves. Weedmaps swag bags will be distributed while supplies last. Visitors to the dispensary must be adults age 21 and older. The dispensary’s capacity is limited to 10 customers at a time. Everyone is required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. “As a Roxbury resident, I am especially excited to open my first Massachusetts dispensary in Athol,” said Seun Adedeji, the founder and chief executive officer of Elev8 Cannabis. “Not only will the Athol community have access to high-quality cannabis health and wellness products, but they will also have a sleek retail environment to experience it and shop.”

The dispensary occupies a 2,000 square foot renovated building designed to provide customers with a memorable retail shopping experience. The floor plan allows for ample spacing between customers to support the social distancing requirements while shopping, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “All in all, we believe we’ve created both a safe and exciting retail space for the Athol community,” said Adedeji. “We’ve even added a few extras to elevate customers’ enjoyment factor, including several fun interactive stations to create selfies and pictures and to write messages.”

Support for Cannabis Grows

Elev8 Cannabis Athol’s grand opening comes at a time in the country as more Americans support legalizing marijuana. Approximately two-thirds of Americans say they support legalizing marijuana, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. “The steady transition to a legal, regulated cannabis market in Massachusetts is a good sign, particularly during this time of economic uncertainty and pain,” said Shaleen Title, a Commissioner of the Cannabis Control Commission in Worcester County. “As one of the people charged with ensuring that people of color and businesses of all sizes are encouraged and included in this state’s industry, it is heartening to see more minority-owned businesses like Elev8 Cannabis beginning to open, with many more licensed and in the pipeline to begin operating soon.”

The opening of two other Elev8 Cannabis dispensaries occurs next year in Orange and Williamstown.

Ntiva Wins CRN Triple Crown Award 2020

Ntiva, Inc., a leading provider of managed IT, cloud hosting, cyber security, unified communications and strategic consulting services, announced that CRN®, a brand of The Channel Company, has recognized Ntiva as a 2020 Triple Crowd Award winner.

CRN Triple Crown Award winners are among the largest IT solution providers in North America from a revenue standpoint on the Solution Provider 500 list, while ranking as one of the fastest-growing organizations in the channel with recognition on the Fast Growth 150 list, and have received the highest-level certifications from leading vendors on the Tech Elite 250 list. While it is an impressive accomplishment for a solution provider to earn a spot on any of these elite lists, being named to all three in the same year is a great honor that should receive special acknowledgement and celebration.

“We are incredibly honored to be a Triple Crown Award Winner for the third year in a row,” said Steven Freidkin, CEO of Ntiva. “This year has been a challenging one for many IT Solution Providers, and so we’re especially proud of our ability to continue to thrive and grow. Our hard working team and dedicated partners have been truly exceptional, providing around the clock support to our loyal clients throughout a very difficult period. It’s a fantastic acknowledgement of Ntiva’s hard work and dedication to be recognized yet again as one of the top growth companies in the channel.”

For the seventh year, the Triple Crown Award recognizes solution providers that hold themselves to the highest standard in the IT channel. It is awarded to the top solution providers in North America based on revenue, growth, and technical expertise.

“Triple Crown Award winners have attained the ultimate achievement — the trifecta — they are among the top solution providers in North America by revenue, have seen more substantial growth than many of their peers over the past year, and continue to establish and build upon the technical skills that help them provide customers with the highest level of service in the IT channel,” said Blaine Raddon, CEO of The Channel Company. “We are honored to award these solution providers the Triple Crown Award for their expertise and exceptional contributions to the channel, and we are excited to see where they go from here.”

This year’s Triple Crown Award winners will be featured in the October issue of CRN Magazine — they can also be found online at http://www.crn.com/triplecrown.

If Robin Hood and Tux (the Linux Penguin) had a love child: A rebranded CodeWeavers

CodeWeavers new logo

CodeWeavers New Logo [October 2020]

“We are developers at our core, who are not afraid of technical, often messy challenges. We bend rules, we accomplish the unexpected, we take risks. We are disruptive, yet good natured,” Marketing Director Jana Schmid declares.

CodeWeavers®, Inc., developer of CrossOver™ — a unique approach to cross-platform compatibility for macOS®, Linux and Chrome OS®— announced today an overhaul of its branding that reflects a more focused vision and enhanced service offerings. CodeWeavers launched an updated website (http://www.codeweavers.com) offering two newly branded services — PortJump™ and ExecMode™ — alongside their OG software, CrossOver.

“This rebrand better represents the evolution of CodeWeavers over the last 14 years,” James Ramey, President of CodeWeavers explains. “We believe Robin Hood had the right idea. There is no such thing as a closed platform. Software was meant to be liberated, and we believe we are the liberator.”

Introducing PortJump and ExecMode

PortJump helps app and game developers broaden their market beyond Windows users. With CodeWeavers signature CrossOver technology, no source code changes are required. This eliminates the need for clients to maintain two or more code bases, while bringing their Windows based app or game to the macOS, Linux and/or Chrome OS marketplace. ExecMode helps organizations solve their most ghastly technical challenges with our unmatched expertise and talent.

“It’s the first time we put names and branding into our porting service (PortJump) and our consulting service (ExecMode).” Founder and CEO of CodeWeavers Jeremy White reveals. “Rest assured my open-source aficionados, the new branding only enhances our commitment to Wine and the open-source community. We believe in building up the open source community. In building up the next generation of talent. The best people will be attracted to the greatest causes. And we don’t care what the popular kids think. All while preserving the mischievous humor we enjoy so much.”

CodeWeavers’ core mission is to support people using Windows technology without Windows by sustaining and improving the Wine project.

“We are developers at our core, who are not afraid of technical, often messy challenges. We bend rules, we accomplish the unexpected, we take risks. We are disruptive, yet good natured,” Marketing Director Jana Schmid declares. “We believe in doing hard things because they are hard. In taking our mission seriously, and ourselves less seriously. That makes us fun to be around.”

###

About CodeWeavers

We’re rebels. We’re misfits. But mostly, we’re software liberators. And we’re very, very good at what we do. We have to be. Lots of developers work with open source, but only a tiny fraction of those are good enough to get software that was designed for one platform to work on another one. We invented CrossOver software – a unique approach to cross-platform compatibility that does not require dual-boot or another OS license. We launched PortJump to help app and game developers broaden their market beyond Windows® users. And we launched ExecMode to help Enterprise organizations solve really ugly technical challenges.
