Shifting the discussion surrounding cyber security

Prominent UK technology provider, Softcat, have given their view on why the C-suite and IT need to align when it comes to cyber security. Published by way of Fluent, Softcat’s dynamic new IT thought leadership platform, the article looks at the subject from a new angle.

For the most part, articles concerning cyber security are almost always written from the viewpoint of the cyber security team and Softcat are highlighting that to do so is to not get the full picture. As a result, Adam Louca, Chief Technologist Security, wrote this article with the goal of positively shifting the focus.

Louca explains his thinking saying, “I think it’s time to change the way we speak about cyber security”. And continues, “Boards are informed they need to continue investing in the next whizbang solution, be scared of the latest attack vector, or face the wrath of a nation state threat actor. What about if we imagine we are no longer IT professionals but have transitioned into the role of a member of the leadership team?”

Further into the article he poses the question of what a more balanced exchange of information would look like and how it might transform the response of the C-suite to the overall benefit of the business.

To read Louca’s perspective in full, you can access the article on Fluent – in addition to the wider collection of thought leadership pieces that share Softcat’s views on technological developments throughout the industry.

Fluent focuses on wide variety of key themes, which include:

Cyber security first aid

Aligning the C-suite with IT

Datacentre operations post-COVID-19

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Leveraging forced changes in the healthcare market

Secure access service edge

Predicting the workplace of tomorrow

Digital transformation outlook

Managing teams remotely

Computer Science Teachers Association Adds CoderZ’s Professional Development Program to Curated List of Quality Resources

News Image

My experience with CoderZ professional development was very positive. It provided the familiarity I needed to gather valuable data about student performance and helped me to better support my students when they are challenged.

After a rigorous evaluation, the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) has added CoderZ to its online list of professional learning programs. The list enables K-12 computer science (CS) teachers to find quality professional development opportunities and associated curriculum that fit their needs and goals.

An independent committee of experts evaluated the CoderZ professional development programs using a detailed rubric aligned to quality indicators such as the following:

  • Content Focus
  • Active Learning
  • Collaboration
  • Differentiation
  • Models and Modeling
  • Inclusivity
  • Accessibility
  • Feedback and Reflection
  • Scale and Sustainability
  • Efficacy
  • Ongoing Support
  • Sustained Duration

The CoderZ professional development program introduces instructors to the concepts of teaching computer science and computational thinking using an online tool. Participants learn robotics and coding best practices as well as strategies to successfully leverage a graphic programming interface. In addition, the program hones the skills needed to reinforce student engagement, application, exploration and use of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.

The professional development program is strongly aligned to CSTA programming standards and gives teachers opportunities to connect to Common Core Math, NGSS, and additional CSTA standards. Teachers receive a hands-on learning experience with guided practice. Afterward, they receive ongoing support through a facilitated Facebook community, weekly virtual office hours and email and phone support to process inquiries.

“We customize our professional development to meet educators’ needs,” said Ido Yerushalmi, CEO of CoderZ. “So, as participants learn how to develop and deliver STEM or CS instruction, our program can also help them integrate that new knowledge with their use of approaches such as differentiated and adaptive instruction.”

The CoderZ professional development program has received a lot of positive feedback from teachers who have taken it. One example is Todd Leff, a CS and technology teacher who has been teaching programming at Kingsview Middle School in Maryland. Another is Monica Maldonado, the director of technology for the Diocese of Corpus Christi in Texas.

“I signed up for the training because I wanted to know the ins and outs of CoderZ before I used it with my students,” said Leff. “My experience with CoderZ professional development was very positive. It provided the familiarity I needed to gather valuable data about student performance and helped me to better support my students when they are challenged.”

The schools in the Diocese of Corpus Christi had already implemented computer science instruction prior to the CoderZ training. However, they were adding instruction through CoderZ to their STEM learning initiative. “The professional development was designed to provide training to our fourth and fifth grade teachers with small chunks of content and at a pace that would build teacher confidence over time and encourage successes,” said Maldonado.

Maldonado praised the supportive experience that the CoderZ’s professional development team had provided to the diocese’s schoolteachers. “We would definitely recommend CoderZ’s professional development to other teachers because they will adapt their learning approaches to fit your district or diocese to ensure a successful rollout,” she said.

Collabspace Product Suite

Collabspace offers an easy and simplified way to step into the cloud if you haven’t already, pay for what you need and ensure your data is protected.

Collabware, a leading provider of information governance automation software, today announced the global release of three distinct products under the Collabspace brand. This content management cloud service has segmented into tiers to provide focused and advanced features for secure archiving, accurate search, and compliant records management; named:

  •     Collabspace ARCHIVE
  •     Collabspace DISCOVERY
  •     Collabspace CONTINUUM

Collabspace connects to and streams all content sources together within a data lake archive to bring control and visibility to an organization’s structured and unstructured data assets. With these new product sets, organizations can choose a product plan focused on their specific needs, gain added capabilities focused on those project areas and have the flexibility to scale and add other further functionality when needed.

“As we shifted to working remotely last year, customer demand also shifted. We all learned that secure access to business-critical information is key for maintaining business continuity and productivity,” says Graham Sibley, CEO of Collabware. “For any enterprise, Collabspace offers an easy and simplified way to step into the cloud if you haven’t already, pay for what you need and ensure your data is protected.”

Adding to Collabware’s suite of automated content management products, Collabspace allows organizations to archive and see all their data as a whole, no matter where it’s stored, search across all repositories into one results view, and apply defensible lifecycle retention periods to files.

Collabspace ARCHIVE

Collabspace ARCHIVE supports cross-system data access, auditing, recovery, and search. Electronic files and email content are transparently and automatically archived into a data lake while keeping content fully available and searchable. In the event of a ransomware attack or data breach of local storage, Collabspace recovery is virtually instant. Productivity can be maintained with little to no downtime, backed by security features, including:

  •     WORM (Write Once Read Many) Format to ensure files are not modified or tampered with
  •     Multi-jurisdictional coverage to achieve data residency and sovereignty compliance
  •     Full audit tracking across all content, including additions, updates, views, and downloads
  •     Meet FDA, FINRA, FOIA, FRCP, HIPAA, IIROC, PIPEDA, SEC, and SOX regulatory requirements
  •     Secure permission-based access, encryption, immutable activity logs and more.

Collabspace DISCOVERY

Collabspace DISCOVERY automatically indexes all data to enable expansive search capabilities, also revealing dark and hidden data to make it searchable. In cases such as processing Freedom of Information (FOI) or General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requests, users can rely on its unique search engine to find what they’re looking for, including:

  •     Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to track text in files such as images and scanned PDFs or TIFFs
  •     Automatic transcription and indexing of audio and video files
  •     Search all data using keywords with Boolean, fuzzy, wildcard, and proximity operators
  •     View search results in a configurable, spreadsheet-like interface and export individually or in bulk
  •     Machine learning to automatically identify data entities, keywords, and objects in images
  •     Add files to legal holds to streamline reviews while also preventing data destruction.

Collabspace CONTINUUM

Collabspace CONTINUUM automates records activities to meet your legislative and regulatory compliance requirements. Files are also auto-categorized to a file plan so proper retention policies can be applied.

  •     Use a web-based, no-code visual workflow system to design data retention and lifecycle policies
  •     Apply time and event-based retention, including use of calculations based on metadata values
  •     Execute multi-stage, multi-participant disposition review processes to authorize destruction
  •     Manage both electronic and physical records, including inventory control and circulation tracking.

“Our customer’s feedback is the key driver in how we make significant enhancements to our product capability, says Sing Chan, VP of Product at Collabware. “By integrating their immediate needs with the most current technology, automation, machine learning and AI capabilities, we are able to provide powerful tools that address real-world scenarios. This responsiveness has allowed us to consistently deliver a roster of features that no one else offers.”

TWAIN Working Group and PDF Association Announce PDF/R, a PDF Technology-Based ISO Standard

News Image

The TWAIN Working Group (TWG) and the PDF Association, today announced PDF/R (a.k.a. PDF/raster), an ISO-standardized format for storing, transporting and exchanging multi-page raster-image documents, such as scanned documents and photographs. As a subset of PDF technology, PDF/R takes advantage of existing widespread support for viewing, printing and processing PDF files. As a domain-specific subset of PDF, it is simple to generate and interpret, allowing it to replace the TIFF and JPEG file formats for capture and delivery of scanner output. PDF/R provides the portability of PDF while offering the core functionality of TIFF, bitonal, grayscale and true color images. PDF/R fits well into existing workflows and is compatible so either existing libraries or newly developed frameworks can be used for embedded systems like firmware. PDF/R features include support for encryption and authentication, and is as extensible as PDF itself.

The project to create PDF/R was started by the TWAIN Working Group as part of its TWAIN Direct project to connect scanners to applications through networks. The PDF Association worked in conjunction with the TWAIN Working Group to develop and formalize PDF/R as an ISO Standard, published as ISO 23504 in late 2020. Although directly integrated into TWAIN Direct scanning technology, PDF/R can also be adopted as a standalone file format for use in other applications.

“Before PDF/R document scanning systems were based on image formats instead of document formats,” said Duff Johnson, CEO, PDF Association. “PDF/R delivers the advantages of PDF to all imaging workflows, allowing even low-cost scanners to produce PDF documents complete with metadata, encryption and digital signatures, if desired, straight from the scanner.”

“The PDF/R standard is a great replacement to the traditional TIFF and JPEG image formats supported by traditional scanning devices and applications. PDF/R delivers compact, high quality images from image acquisition devices providing efficient and secure delivery of documents over a network.”, said Joseph Odore, TWAIN Chair and Product Manager Document and Imaging, Office Products Business Unit of Panasonic Corporation.

About TWAIN Working Group

The TWAIN Working Group, established in 1992, is a not-for-profit association of industry leaders who have gathered to create a standard that benefits the imaging industry as a whole. TWAIN’s purpose is to provide and foster a universal public standard which links applications and image acquisition devices. The ongoing mission of this organization is to continue to enhance the standard to accommodate future technologies. TWAIN generates multiple opportunities for application developers and users to access information and broaden the standard; through a developer’s forum, main website and online self-certification process. Current members of the TWAIN Working Group include P3iD Technologies, Inc., Panasonic Corporation, ExactCODE GmbH, Fujitsu Computer Products of America Inc., InoTec GmbH Organisationssyteme, Kodak Alaris, Plustek, Inc., Atalasoft, Microtek, Inc., Dynamsoft, Epson America, Inc., LEAD Technologies and Hewlett Packard. More information about PDF/R, the TWAIN API and imaging standards can be obtained at pdfraster.org, twain.org and twaindirect.org.

About the PDF Association

First established as the PDF/A Competence Center in 2006 the PDF Association today is an international standards development organization promoting awareness and adoption of open standards in digital document applications using PDF technology. The association facilitates education, networking and the sharing of expertise and experience with interested parties worldwide. The current membership includes over 150 organizations and numerous individual subject-matter experts from more than 35 countries. Damo Consulting launches digital maturity model for health systems

Damo Consulting, the leading digital transformation and growth advisory firm for healthcare enterprises and technology firms, today announced the launch of DigiMTM, an online assessment tool for health systems looking to benchmark their digital transformation efforts.

The assessment tool is linked to a digital maturity framework that categorizes the digital transformation strategy of health systems based on four model stages. Model 1 enterprises rely exclusively on their EHR platforms to drive digital strategy. Model 2 entities go beyond EHR platforms to assess best-in-class stand-alone tools to drive digital patient engagement. Models 3 and 4 represent health systems that appoint a dedicated digital transformation leader and drive digital initiatives as part of a comprehensive, enterprise-wide strategy that addresses the front-end and back-end aspects of technology-enabled digital transformation.

“The early findings from the assessments indicate that while leading health systems have made significant progress with dedicated leadership and budgets for a comprehensive digital roadmap, many continue to drive digital initiatives as an extension of their EHR implementation and optimization efforts,” said Paddy Padmanabhan, CEO of Damo Consulting and co-author of Healthcare Digital Transformation: How Consumerism, Technology, And Pandemic Are Accelerating the Future.

“We have seen strong interest for the DigiMTM maturity assessment tool which is based on the 4-stage maturity model that we had developed earlier. Digital leaders are interested in a tool that could help them evaluate the maturity levels of their digital transformation programs relative to their peers in the marketplace using the 4-stage model as a reference point,” continued Padmanabhan.

“The industry as a whole is still in the early stages of the digital transformation journey,” said Sara Vaezy, Chief Digital Strategy Officer of Providence. “As consumerism begins to take hold, standardized models and assessment tools that enable healthcare leaders to benchmark their performance against best-in-class—both within and beyond the healthcare sector—will become increasingly important.”

“Health systems that have taken our DigiMTM assessment have always appreciated the level of insight they get out of the benchmarking data. The assessment tool has served as a catalyst for validating and rethinking priorities for enterprise digital roadmaps,” added Padmanabhan. “Based on the responses we have had to date, we are able to analyze data across health systems of various sizes across the country and develop benchmarking insights that are helping digital leaders evaluate evolve their own digital transformation journeys.”
