Lewis Coleman, MD’s Landmark Discovery in the Science of Stress

Contentment magazine Winter issue

The Winter issue of Contentment magazine introduces The Mammalian Stress Mechanism as discovered by Dr. Coleman. Subscriptions are free. Sign up and read about this amazing breakthrough at stress.org

This is the zenith of 20th century science and the most important advance in the history of medicine and biology for the 21st century.

How do our bodies work? Does science have all those questions answered? Sadly, no. For if they did, medical treatments would have far better outcomes. Medicine is based on flawed and incomplete theories of physiology accepting large gaps in understanding and theoretical fillers to make assumptions seem viable and justify therapies.

Professor Hans Selye, “the father of stress medicine,” had another idea based on his observation that people with widely varying diagnoses exhibited similar symptoms. He coined the term “stress,” in the context of how we use the term today, defining how we react to any demands placed upon our bodies and minds. Although he was a prolific researcher, and founded a new concept of physiology, there wasn’t sufficient science in his day to finish the task replacing putative concepts with known facts.

After working on it for over 20 years, anesthesiologist Dr. Lewis S. Coleman has uncovered the Mammalian Stress Mechanism originally proposed by Hans Selye, explaining how the relationship between illnesses and the environment stress us, and how our bodies naturally respond by repairing us and making us whole again. This Unified Theory of Medicine and Biology explains how treatments that restore normal stress mechanism activity can cure disease and save lives. This is the zenith of 20th century science and the most important advance in the history of medicine and biology for the 21st century.

The Winter issue of Contentment magazine, released today, introduces The Mammalian Stress Mechanism as discovered by Dr. Coleman. Subscriptions are free. Sign up and read about this amazing breakthrough today at the nonprofit American Institute of Stress, at https://www.stress.org/daily-life/contentment-magazine

The stress mechanism is complex, beautiful, and a force of nature. It normally functions efficiently and unobtrusively to supply oxygen and nutrients to cells throughout the body, to maintain and repair tissues when they are injured, regulate blood flow, breathing, digestion and excretion. Combinations of tissue damage and hyperactive nervous system activity overwhelm the stress mechanism causing it to waste the body’s resources and produce excessive and defective substances that damage tissues and disrupt organ function. This manifests as disease.

All the time, money and human toll invested in attempting to cure cancer and so many other diseases made little progress because it was all based on an incomplete and often flawed physiology. Now if medical schools, researchers, and governments embrace and shift resources along the way Dr. Coleman informs us, healthcare in the near future will not only be far more effective, but it will also be kinder, gentler, working with our bodies rather than overpowering us. So called “modern medicine” will languish in history in the way we think of medieval medicine now. Dr. Coleman’s new book is the new bible of medicine and requires and deserves intense study and adoption in every field of healthcare. Dr. Lewis S. Coleman is truly the father of 21st century medicine.

50 Years Lost in Medical Advance: The discovery of Hans Selye’s stress mechanism by Lewis S. Coleman, MD, FAIS, published by the American Institute of Stress Press is available on Amazon and wherever fine books are sold.

“The full implications of this compendious work could well alter all fields of medicine if research based on these ideas bear fruit.” — W.A.C. Mutch, MD, FRCPC, Professor of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, Director Neuroanesthesia Research Laboratory, Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine Researcher, Health Sciences Centre at the University of Manitoba.

“The core theory with mechanisms and some practical applications are extremely insightful and should not be missed by anyone interested in their own health or in how our medical and research system is searching in unhelpful domains and applying less than helpful theoretical applications. [Dr. Coleman’s] book and its theory need to find their way into the minds of our current thought leaders and funding recipients and anyone actually trying to reduce human diseases.” — Elliott English, Director of Telehealth Operations for BlueStar Telehealth.

The American Institute of Stress (stress.org) is a non-profit organization established in 1978 at the request of Hans Selye, MD, PhD, by his protégé Paul Rosch, MD to serve as a clearinghouse for information on all stress related subjects. Other founding members included Linus Pauling, Alvin Toffler, Bob Hope, Michael DeBakey, Herbert Benson, Ray Rosenman and other prominent physicians, health professionals and lay individuals interested in exploring the science and multitudinous varied effects of stress on our health and quality of life. Company Makes Beautiful Music Out of Coronavirus DNA and Offers It as an NFT Collection

News Image

Using a process called DNA Sonification, ViroMusic.io has created a collection of 10,000 songs made using the genetic code of the Coronavirus. The team wrote software to comb through the viral code to identify sections that sound musical. The algorithm then turns each letter of RNA into a musical note, comprising a melody. As a final touch, human-played instruments are added on top as accompaniment. The songs are available as an NFT collection on Rarible.com.

Most NFT collections are images of digital art. This makes ViroMusic unique, as it’s a collection of 10,000 songs. The company hopes NFT collectors will snap up the chance to own a unique piece of the code that has shaped so much of our current lives.

From the ViroMusic website: “The idea for this collection was born from an awe of the beauty in the code of life. We hope this project helps to raise awareness that even a virus capable of inflicting such misery is fundamentally based on the same code as every living thing on earth. We thought it would be interesting to take this code and make it play music. We hope you find it as haunting, interesting and provocative as we do.”

While the code in the virus was responsible for creating the unique melody in each song, several musicians helped to make the songs more interesting by playing parts along with the melody. Musicians included Yoed Nir on the cello, whose credits include Regina Spektor, Judy Collins and Interpol’s Paul Banks. Drum parts were added by Chuck Sabo, who recorded on albums by Elton John, XTC, OMD and Natalie Imbruglia.

Rallyday Partners and the Founders of Genesis Research Sell to GHO Capital Partners in a Landmark Transaction

News Image

We are honored that we supported Genesis as its first outside investor and the tremendous progress we made together as partners

Rallyday Partners (Rallyday), a Denver-based private equity firm executing its “built by founders for founders” investing strategy, has announced the firm’s first sale. After partnering with the founders of Genesis Research (Genesis) to recapitalize the business on February 28, 2020, completing two add-on acquisitions bringing artificial intelligence technology and a European presence to the platform, and building a world-class team of scientific and business talent, Rallyday completed the transaction with Global Healthcare Opportunities (GHO), a European specialist investor in global healthcare, on November 16, 2021.

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Hoboken, New Jersey, Genesis is a pioneer in the emerging field of Real-World Evidence (RWE), servicing market leading innovators across the life sciences industry. Genesis optimizes drug development and evidences the clinical and commercial value of products via expert analysis, synthesis, communication, and utilization of integrated Real-World Data (RWD). Genesis has an established footprint in the U.S. and U.K. with more than 120 employees.

Capitalizing on the demand for value demonstration, regulatory agency requirements to reduce the cost of new drug development, and the growing availability of RWD, Genesis Research’s tech-enabled services enable its pharma customers to work faster and better demonstrate drug efficacy. The company’s data-agnostic approach to accessing and analyzing RWE enables utilization of the best data sources available, which includes data drawn from a wide range of sources outside of clinical studies.

The partners at Rallyday, said, “We look for industry tailwinds, innovative business models and ‘monster’ founders who want to elevate their industries with our passionate and systematic approach. As former CEO’s and entrepreneurs, we are deeply proud that Genesis was able to thrive under our ownership. We are also inspired by the entire team at Genesis, led by CEO Frank A. Corvino, who accomplished more in 18 months than most companies achieve in a decade.”

Steve Arikian, Chairman and Co-Founder of Genesis Research, said, “When we first met Rallyday, we knew that we had found our partner. Compared to other investors who were interested in Genesis, the partners at Rallyday were all former entrepreneurs like myself who I could trust to take our company and employees to new levels of possibility with the integrity of a founder. Rallyday exceeded our expectations in every regard and our recent sale is a tribute to everything that is right about partnership done the right way for the right reasons.”

Frank A. Corvino, CEO and Co-Founder of Genesis Research, said: “Our entire team is grateful for Rallyday’s guidance and support. The Rallyday Accelerator Program (RAP) systematically aligned our strategy, refined our culture to support that strategy, and provided a leadership development program that created a fulfilling experience for everyone in our organization. Rallyday’s belief in our team’s potential, coupled with a relationship that was established in foundational trust, empowered us to become the best version of ourselves.”

The partners at Rallyday, concluded: “The hallmark of our work is the creation of win/wins for all stakeholders. We are honored that we supported Genesis as its first outside investor and the tremendous progress we made together as partners. We are elated that GHO will lead Genesis to new levels of positive impact in the life sciences sector and we are humbled that this transaction is supporting the work of our investors who invest on behalf of university endowments and other philanthropic activities.”

Pro-Lab Diagnostics Paves The Way to Enhance Public Health Initiatives

Pro-Lab Diagnostics Paves a Way to Enhance Public Health Initiatives

Mosquitoes. Just reading the name of the insect can make you itch. While mosquitoes have never been shone in a positive light, they are proven to benefit our ecosystem.

However, mosquitoes are known for carrying arboviruses that have life altering effects including West Nile Virus.

The Tangipahoa Mosquito Abatement District, located an hour away from New Orleans, focuses on the disease management of these tiny critters. They do this for two reasons: (1) to ensure a healthy community from disease, such as West Nile Virus, and (2) social enjoyment of the outdoors.

With such a focused mission, it’s crucial that turnaround times for testing of arboviruses is easy, quick and efficient. To achieve results in minutes not days with a high accuracy, TMAD partnered with Pro-Lab Diagnostics to adopt a distinguished way that can produce inhouse results. That inhouse solution is called, ProAmpRT.

Community Health Plays an important Role

Colby Colona, MS is an upbeat and passionate Entomologist who has worked her way to Assistant Director of the TMAD. Part of Colby’s job is focused on mosquito control – trapping, sorting, inspecting, and shipping out for testing.

When TMAD is informed of a mosquito infestation, they will scan the area for volume to control. Once they have assessed the area and entrapped mosquitoes for sampling, the area will be sprayed to ensure community enjoyment.

After control, Colby’s team will sort and inspect the mosquitoes to be ready for testing of West Nile Virus. The testing process involves packing and shipping about half of the mosquito samples collected and sending those to be detected of any positives. After the samples are received, the testing lab will analyze the collected samples for any present arboviruses and notify TMAD of any positives. If positive samples are found, the community will be informed immediately to ensure public health safety in those areas.

This whole process will take approximately TWO weeks (You can learn more about that process here).

Colby knew that TMAD could help with this testing process by finding a solution that is quick, reliable, and accurate. She reached out to Pro-Lab Diagnostics to assist in this solution.

Real Time Results

In 2018, TMAD invested in an inhouse testing solution specifically for the highly prevalent West Nile Virus. Wanting to be “proactive instead of reactive”, Colby shared with Pro-Lab Diagnostics how the LAMP Testing has “improved the testing process and eliminated turnaround time”.

TMAD is one of the first mosquito control districts in the state to adopt the technology manufactured by Pro-Lab Diagnostics, and Pro-Lab is pleased to share the results.

From taking TWO weeks to receive results of the collected samples, TMAD’s team can now collect, test, and receive results all in the same day, even within minutes. From testing ZERO samples a day to now testing THIRTY-TWO samples a day is a huge win for public health and safety of our local communities!

Pro-Lab Implements New Lab

After receiving the phone call from TMAD and determining the goals in mind, Pro-Lab Diagnostics’ team travelled out to Louisiana and set up a working lab to isolate and amplify genetic material to show the presence of West Nile Virus.

The workflow implemented consists of preparing reagents in the clean environment proved by Pro-Lab’s Class II A2 Biosafety Cabinets and PCR Hood, going through a process of centrifugation of the frozen collection of samples that are stored at -86C Freezer. Pipetting samples into the Genie II then reviewing the real time results that provide an official output of what is in the samples tested in less than 30 minutes.

The solutions that have been incorporated in this situation are designed to target detection of the organism’s RNAs, prevent contamination, and ensure accurate results. Pro-Lab’s high-quality lab equipment is made with the researcher in mind. Each product has all the components needed for ease of use and optimum solutions.

Announcing the Winners of The Scientist’s Top 10 Innovations of 2021

Top 10 Innovations logo

Each year The Scientist seeks to highlight the latest and greatest tools, technologies, and techniques to hit the life science landscape. For more than a decade, we’ve been employing the assistance of expert panels of independent judges who weigh submissions of innovative products speeding work in laboratories and facilitating biological discovery. This year’s crop of entries to The Scientist’s Top 10 Innovations contest reflected the fact that the scientific community, like the whole of society, has been adjusting to a new reality marked by the second year of an extremely challenging and taxing global pandemic. At the same time, work in other areas of the life sciences has preserved. “In a way, it’s heartening that scientific advances have continued to occur in spaces outside of the crucial coronavirus focus,” says Editor-in-Chief Bob Grant. “It suggests that the global biomedical apparatus is robust enough to address a pressing and pointed concern while not losing ground in fields not directly related to that crisis.”

The winners of The Scientist’s Top 10 Innovations of 2021 contest are:

1) nVueTM System (Inscopix) – This “miniaturized microscope” enables dual color imaging of two distinct brain signals in freely-behaving animals, such as two neuronal populations or neural activity in conjunction with brain blood flow.

2) PhysioMimix™ Multi-Organ System (CN Bio) – The microfluidic platform allows scientists to connect individual organ-on-a-chip models for disease research and drug development.

3) MERSCOPETM (Vizgen) – This single-cell spatial genomics instrument, the only one currently available for purchase, detects RNA transcripts from hundreds of genes across intact tissue and returns imaging and expression data at subcellular resolution.

4) Brain-Chip (Emulate) – This organ-on-a-chip model consists of two channels embedded in flexible rubber polymer—one channel represents blood vessel walls and the other represents the brain—and midway along the chip, the two channels come into contact, allowing scientists to study the blood-brain barrier.

5) Gemini and Mark I (Q Bio) – The Mark I prototype scans the entire body using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the imaging results are uploaded to the Gemini platform, along with medical records, genetics data, and traditionally acquired tests of blood, urine, saliva, and vital signs, to create a “digital twin” of the patient.

6) Chromium X (10X Genomics) – Loading cells, reagents, and a partitioning oil into a microfluidic chip, researchers can use this benchtop instrument to create droplets, or Gel Bead-In-Emulsions (GEMs), that each contain a single cell, a single barcoded Gel Bead, and a reagent, and are ready to be sequenced and used in assays offered by 10x Genomics.

7) SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Assay Development Kits (The Native Antigen Company) – This coronavirus neutralization assay uses synthetic versions of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein’s receptor binding domain and its target, the mammalian ACE-2 receptor, to quantify a serum sample’s level of antibodies that bind, and therefore neutralize, the virus, as evidenced by a color change.

8) Tapestri Single-cell Multi-omics Solution (Mission Bio) – This process for single-cell analysis allows users to consider DNA sequence and proteomic information simultaneously, and therefore correlated at the single-cell level.

9) CRISPR-SNP-Chip (Cardea Bio) – Equipped with a CRISPR-Cas system tethered to a graphene transistor, this device is the first of its kind that can detect single base differences in DNA without generating millions of copies of the DNA first.

10) Molecular CartographyTM Single-Cell Spatial Analysis Service (Resolve Biosciences) – This mail-in service offers fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to create high-resolution images of individual RNA transcripts inside intact tissues—down to the subcellular level.

Congratulations to this year’s winners. Be sure to visit https://www.the-scientist.com/features/2021-top-10-innovations-69438 where you can read more about the products that earned top spots and see comments from our expert judges.

CellPoint and Hypertrust Patient Data Care co-develop xCellit platform for cell therapies at the point-of-care

CellPoint and Hypertrust Patient Data Care (HPDC) today announced the launch of xCellit. The xCellit system was co-developed to make autologous cell therapies available more rapidly and efficiently by facilitating the scheduling, monitoring and data capturing of cell treatment workflows. It is based on HPDC’s X-Chain Cell & Gene Therapy Orchestration solution and fully tailored to the CellPoint point-of-care manufacturing model.

Using xCellit in combination with a closed and automated manufacturing device developed by Lonza (Cocoon), patient vein-to-vein times can be reduced to 6 days only, as compared to the industry standard of 4-6 weeks. This improvement is made possible as point-of-care manufacturing eliminates the need for complex, time-consuming and cost-intensive logistics.

“We are excited about our partnership with Hypertrust Patient Data Care. xCellit provides an end-to-end platform to digitize, streamline and secure our point-of-care supply chains for our CAR-T treatments. The convenient dashboards and notification triggers are critical in continuously involving and informing all stakeholders along the treatment workflow”, says Tol Trimborn, CEO of CellPoint.

Andreas Göbel, Managing Director at Hypertrust Patient Data Care adds: “This is a great step to further advance Cell & Gene therapies. The collaboration with CellPoint shows that even in fully decentralized setups it is possible to provide the required level of trust between multiple parties so that personalized treatment data can be handled reliably and securely.”

The point-of-care model brings a new, decentralized approach to autologous cell therapies. Currently available cell therapies involve numerous sequential steps: taking material from the patient, freezing, shipment by air freight, custom clearance, thawing, central factory manufacturing, quality control and release, transport back to the patient, and finally administering the product to the same patient. This current model struggles with limited manufacturing capacity and tremendous costs. In CellPoint’s point-of-care model, the production workflow is executed directly at the hospital where the patient is treated, circumventing many steps like cryopreservation and transport, driving down time and costs.

The xCellit platform provides a comprehensive set of features: a fully blown manufacturing execution system (MES) component including batch record QA/QC (quality assurance/quality control) and release in a remote environment. At its core, xCellit offers a highly trustworthy and customizable workflow process engine supporting the entire personalized medicine supply chain from patient treatment to recovery.

More information about point-of-care treatments and the xCellit platform is also available in the joint webinar by CellPoint, Dell and HPDC: https://www.hypertrust-patient.com/closed-loop-supply-chain-in-healthcare-webinar-with-dell-and-cellpoint
