Keit Announces Plans of an Ultrasonic Descaler for the IRmadilloDiamond

Keit is pleased to announce plans to incorporate ultrasonic descaling into its product offering as a means to keep the IRmadillo process analyser operational in chemically scaling environments.

Many industrial processes involving inorganic salts and compounds have inherent scale formation – for example, gibbsite formation in alumina refining, or pirssonite formation in pulp making. ATR (attenuated total reflectance) based analytical instruments have traditionally been susceptible to fouling and scaling, rendering them unsuitable for these environments. Keit has demonstrated that the use of ultrasound – typically in the range of 20,000 to 40,000 Hz – effectively removes scale from the ATR of the IRmadilloDiamond probes.

This exciting development means Keit will be working with third-party suppliers of ultrasonic equipment to create an all-inclusive solution for incorporation into an IRmadillo installation suited to a wide range of environments. Initially this will be focused on process monitoring of alumina refining and pulp manufacturing, but has implications for all metals, mining and minerals (MMM) applications, as well as extending to removing biofilms during monitoring of industrial biotechnology applications.

Used around the globe, Keit has created the family of IRmadillo mid-infrared instruments to provide in-line, in situ process analysis of liquids over a variety of operating environments. Built tough with fixed sampling probes and a vibration-tolerant optical design, IRmadillo process analysers enable real-time analysis of liquids in environments that challenge standard instrumentation.

Titanic Expedition Chief Scientist, Steve W. Ross, PhD., Spearheads First-Ever Effort to Study the Marine Ecosystem of the Iconic Titanic Wreck Site

Dr. Steve W. Ross, OceanGate Expeditions Titanic Survey Expedition Chief Scientist

Dr. Steve W. Ross, OceanGate Expeditions Titanic Survey Expedition Chief Scientist

We are seeking to compile a list of every living creature we can identify inhabiting the Titanic wreck site to understand this unique deep-sea ecosystem. This has never been attempted before. Dr. Steve W. Ross

OceanGate Expeditions announces that Dr. Steve W. Ross, Research Professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, will be the Chief Scientist of the 2022 Titanic Survey Expedition. Dr. Ross will lead a team of accomplished scientists in a first-of-its-kind survey of the marine ecosystems on and near the Titanic. The wreck of the Titanic, sitting at 3,800 meters on a barren abyssal plain, serves as a refuge for life forms like corals, squat lobsters, brittle stars, and rattail fish. The scientific team will utilize the 5-crewmember Titan submersible as a research platform to observe and record the deep dwelling sea life.

“Previous dives to the Titanic have focused mostly on the wreck and associated archaeology. We are seeking to compile a list of every living creature we can identify inhabiting the Titanic wreck site to understand this unique deep-sea ecosystem. This has never been attempted before,” says marine biology expert Dr. Steve W. Ross. “Unlike ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), using direct observation from the Titan submersible provides a better depth of field and a fuller impression of what the surrounding environment is like. We want to understand what sustains the fish and corals that make this deep ocean artificial reef their home, what is in the water column, and add a biological layer to the GIS mapping effort that began during last year’s expedition. In addition to collecting important ecological and archaeological data, we hope this new information will also contribute to conservation of the wreck site,” continues Dr. Ross.

“It was fascinating to observe numerous creatures during our dives to the Titanic in 2021. We are privileged to have Dr. Ross shepherding this unprecedented project that promises to shed light on this remarkable underwater community,” says Stockton Rush, President, OceanGate Expeditions. “Dr. Ross brings some 45 years of deep ocean research experience to the 2022 Titanic Expedition. Dr. Ross has authored many frequently cited studies of deep sea corals and fish populations in submarine canyons and other locations, and he will be integral to uncovering the mysteries of this unique undersea habitat,” explains Rush.

The scientific team headed by Dr. Ross will be supported by OceanGate Expeditions crewmembers and citizen explorers who will serve as Mission Specialists for this important marine ecological study. In addition to U.S. biologists and archaeologists, the research team will include renowned colleagues from Canada and the UK. Aspiring Mission Specialists interested in supporting the Titanic Survey Expedition should contact OceanGate Expeditions for qualifications, availability, and additional details.

“We are excited to offer INDIGlo, our new firefly luciferase detection reagent, to our customers,” says Dr. Jack Vanden Heuvel, Chief Scientific Officer of INDIGO. “It is an ideal, detection reagent for both low- and high-throughput batch processing of compounds.”

INDIGO Biosciences, Inc. (INDIGO), a recognized industry leader in cell-based luciferase reporter assay kits and service, has developed a new luciferase detection reagent and will be offering this new reagent solely for purchase. INDIGlo, the companies new Luciferase Detection Reagent Kit will provide researchers with the ability to purchase the easy-to-use reagent found in INDIGO products for their own use to investigate a variety of cellular processes.

Luciferase assays are utilized for research in drug development, environmental monitoring, toxicology, as well as many other types of research. Researchers use luciferase assays bioluminescent light output as a sensitive measure of biological activity. Luciferase assays are specifically used for cell-based target validation, pathway analysis, investigating protein function, researching miRNA regulation, and performing compound screenings.

Luciferase assays are preferred by researchers due to their increased sensitivity and precision compared to their fluorescent counterparts. This is because unlike with fluorescence, there is no inherent background luminescence in mammalian cells, which allows a luciferase assay to be extremely sensitive with a greater dynamic linear-response range. Bioluminescence assays also very rarely encounter test compounds with inherent light emission properties. So besides not having to deal with a high signal-to-noise ratio, luciferase-based assays do not have to contend with false signals coming from test compounds themselves.

Luciferase detection reagents are what provide a substrate to convert the activity of the luciferase enzyme into a light signal. It is what lets firefly luciferase reporter assays like those developed by INDIGO to work.

The INDIGlo Luciferase Detection Reagent from INDIGO Biosciences is a glow type luciferase detection reagent with a signal duration of greater than 2 hour with a less than 10% fluctuation in signal. The reagent is provided ‘ready to use’ and is formulated as a 2x-concentrated reagent, thereby allowing greater versatility in its use. The highly sensitive and stable luminescence signal of INDIGlo is ideal for the cost-effective processing of cell culture plates ranging from 96 to 1536-well format. INDIGlo is available for purchase in a variety of formats through INDIGO as well as INDIGO’s distribution partners.

Physicians for Informed Consent Updates Its Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Risk Statement, Analyzes New Safety Data for Children

News Image

In contrast, the trial found that the vaccine causes severe (grade 3) and grade 4 systemic reactions in children.

Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC), an educational nonprofit organization focused on science and statistics, has published an update of its Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Risk Statement (VRS), which includes important questions and answers about the vaccine. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine received expanded emergency use authorization (EUA) for children 5 to 11 years of age; however, the vaccine has not been approved or licensed for children 15 years or younger.

The Pfizer COVID-19 VRS highlights essential data (referenced here) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Pfizer clinical trial to help patients and caregivers engage in informed decision-making. Some key points include the following:

  • The clinical trial found there were zero cases of severe COVID-19 in children of any age who did not receive the vaccine. In contrast, the trial found that the vaccine causes severe (grade 3) and grade 4 systemic reactions in children.

  • The clinical trial indicates that vaccine efficacy declines significantly in less than six months. Although a booster dose of the vaccine is authorized for individuals 16 years of age or older, the clinical trial states that efficacy was not evaluated for Phase 3 BNT162b2 booster group participants. Instead, vaccine efficacy was inferred based on antibody levels observed in only about 300 vaccinated subjects over a one-month time period.
  • The clinical trial provided no evidence that the vaccine prevents asymptomatic infection or transmission of SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19. In addition, recent studies have observed that a significant proportion of severe, critical, and fatal cases of COVID-19 occurred in vaccinated individuals.

“PIC was founded in 2015 to safeguard informed consent in vaccination,” said Dr. Shira Miller, PIC founder and president. “Today, more people than ever before are interested in analyzing infectious disease data and researching vaccines. We are pleased to provide a concise, reader-friendly document that emphasizes important statistics that further assist the public to engage in informed decision-making.”

Earlier this year, PIC introduced its “Do your research” education initiative for COVID-19 vaccines, providing scientific information that reflects the necessity for choice — rather than coercion — in vaccine administration. The newly released VRS helps expand public knowledge. Used together with PIC’s COVID-19 Disease Information Statement (DIS), which discusses effects of COVID-19 in different age groups, the document serves to further aid readers in comparing the risk of COVID-19 infection versus the risk of a severe side effect from a COVID-19 vaccine.

JAIN Irrigation Water Management Services Wins New Product Contest Award at the 2021 Irrigation Show

Water Management Consulting Services Award From Irrigation Association

Executive V.P. Jeff Tuel and Pres. Aric Olson, Jain Irrigation

“The New Product Contest award is a great validation by the Irrigation Association and the members of our industry of the importance JAIN Water Management Consulting Services is having,” said Aric Olson, President of Jain Irrigation

Jain Irrigation, Inc., the world leader in irrigation technology, today announced that its Water Management Services, where JAIN consultants deliver weekly irrigation schedules to growers based on satellite imagery, hyperlocal weather, and machine learning analysis of soil moisture content and water infiltration properties, has won the Irrigation Association 2021 New Product Contest Award in the Specialty Agriculture Irrigation category. This year’s contest was a hybrid event combining virtual and live elements. Products were evaluated based on innovation, design quality, increased water/resource-use efficiency, ease of use, and product life expectancy. Contest judges are experienced professionals with technical knowledge and industry expertise. Official judging was conducted via Zoom Nov. 17-18, with winners announced live on the Irrigation Show floor on December 9.

Winning in the Specialty Agriculture Irrigation category, JAIN Water Management Services was honored for its highly integrated offering of agtech software, hardware, and consulting services that generate intelligent irrigation schedules; featuring the first-of-its-kind utilization of high-resolution satellite imaging for ETc (crop water consumption), real-time local weather and soil moisture sensing in the field, bundled together with Machine Learning toward providing unprecedented precision in management of when and how long each crop irrigation event needs to last.

Accepting the award, Jeff Tuel, Executive Vice President of Jain Irrigation and head of Water Management Services, said, “Growers today are facing environmental challenges the likes we’ve never seen before, in addition to incredible labor shortages. We developed JAIN Water Management Services to remove the hesitancy in deploying new technologies that can meet these problems head-on. While the tools may be complex, the process is quite simple and relies on tried-and-true soil, plant, and water relationships. The growers get this, and it’s remarkable to see how quickly over the course of the program they’re able to pick up the technology and start producing their own irrigation schedules.”

“The New Product Contest award is a great validation by the Irrigation Association and the members of our industry of the importance JAIN Water Management Services is having,” said Aric Olson, President of Jain Irrigation, “Modern technology makes it easier to manage water than any time before in history, but agtech companies need to meet an even higher bar before farmers are willing to change how they operate and we have to be able to adapt along with them, too. Our ability to train and support customers to become power users of JAIN Logic software, to understand their problems, provides a low cost, low-risk trial of the leading technology available today.”

A short video with stories from three California Central Valley Growers talking about their participation in the inaugural launch of JAIN Water Management Services and how working directly with a JAIN water management consultant helped them successfully adopt and use agtech within a single growing season is now available on the Jain Irrigation YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/fg5C8EJGoY0.
