Nursing Teams and Staff at Mount Sinai Morningside Receive Awards for Excellence in Critical Care

The Mount Sinai Morningside nursing teams and staff of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab have received the Gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, becoming the first and only Gold-level unit across the entire Mount Sinai Health System. Additionally, Mount Sinai Morningside Unit 8E has received the Silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence.

Under the leadership of Senior Nurse Manager Joan E. Joseph, MHA, BSN, RN, the Cath Lab at Mount Sinai Morningside is one of only two Cath Labs in the country to have earned the Gold-level Beacon Award; the other is St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn, New York.

The Gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence is granted to hospitals that showcase an effective and systematic approach to policies, procedures, and processes that include engagement of staff and key stakeholders, strategies for process improvement, and performance measures that meet or exceed relevant benchmarks.

The Silver-level award is given to hospitals that provide continual learning and an effective approach to nursing policies, procedures, and processes by engaging staff and key stakeholders, along with achieving optimal patient care.

New Survey from Aeroflow Urology Reveals Over 70% of Consumers Struggle to Afford Diapers for Adults and Children

Aeroflow Urology’s groundbreaking survey, that included 1,105 respondents, shed light on the impact product scarcity has on individuals of all ages with incontinence.

“At Aeroflow Healthcare, we believe that access to diapers and other necessary medical equipment is a right and not a privilege. These survey results indicate that there is still much to be done to close the diaper divide between consumers,” said Mica Phillips, Vice President of Aeroflow Urology.

Aeroflow Urology, a nationwide provider of continence care supplies through insurance, announced today the results of a proprietary survey that demonstrates the divide in affordability for diapers and other incontinence products for low-income families in the United States.

While legislation has been slowly passing in some states to improve access to diapers by removing taxation and other barriers, many Americans still struggle daily to afford these essential items for both children and adults. To gain a better understanding of the current gaps in affordability around diapers and the repercussions for those who cannot access these items, Aeroflow Urology conducted a third-party administered survey in April 2023 that polled more than 1,200 Americans with a single household income of $25,000 or double household income of $50,000 or less who care for someone needing diapers or incontinence supplies (i.e. kids, children and adults with disabilities, elderly, etc.).

Notable survey results include:

  • More than 70% of respondents have not been able to afford diapers, while 72% continuously struggle to buy products due to affordability.
  • Two-thirds (66%) of those surveyed admitted that they have had to choose between buying diapers and other necessities such as food, electricity, etc. on a frequent basis.
  • Approximately 40% of respondents stated they have had to reuse products for an extended period of time because they could not afford to buy new diapers.
  • Almost half (48%) of those surveyed admitted they have had to limit fluid intake for their family members.
  • 53% stated they have had to miss out on important events because they could not afford diapers for the occasion.
  • More than a third (43%) of respondents shared they have experienced a more severe complication because they did not have enough products to properly handle their incontinence, with 70% stating those complications involved an infection, UTI, increased incontinence or skin irritation.


When asked about her experience with trying to provide diapers for her daughter, Larissa R., a patient of Aeroflow Urology stated “if we had only $5 for gas or diapers we tried to put our daughter first, and my husband would beg and ask strangers for gas or cash. Some nights, I had to put a sock in Melody’s pants to help with incontinence until the next day when we could get money.” Another patient of Aeroflow Urology, Riley L., shared “Our daughter had issues with potty training long before any of her diagnoses (autism and epilepsy). In the end of 2021, we got kicked out of our home and were practically homeless, jumping from place to place. Money was so tight we had to discuss whether or not we’d skip meals or diapers. We chose meals.”

The survey results also detail the consequences of not being able to afford diapers and the lack of assistance available for families by healthcare organizations. Two-thirds of respondents admitted their mental health has been negatively impacted by needing diapers or caring for someone with incontinence, with 40% stating their stress and anxiety levels have increased. Despite the struggle respondents have experienced, 60% have shared that their healthcare provider has not provided any assistance in acquiring products, while almost 80% wish there were more resources available to help them navigate caring and supplying products for someone with these issues.

ODG by MCG, an MCG Health company and part of the Hearst Health network, announces that state-specific fee schedules are now available in its ODG for Workers’ Compensation solution. The new enhancements are expected to help insurance carriers that cover work injuries simplify the billing process and provide better support for claim decisions. ODG incorporated fee schedules into its ODG for Auto Injury solution earlier this year.

State fee schedules are widely known as lists of maximum rates a payer (or insurance carrier) will allow for services based on code sets such as CPT, HCPCS, and CDT codes. These schedules are considered important for organizations involved in adjudication or review of bills for workers’ compensation and/or auto injuries. ODG by MCG, an evidence-based web platform for workers’ compensation guidance adopted in many U.S. states, is now providing these state-specific fee schedules for insurance carriers to reference and use in cost comparison analyses.

The detailed schedules for 43 states where fee schedules are currently published are available within the ODG TAO Index solution. In addition, they can be integrated via API (application programming interface) into existing claims management systems. End users can filter the fee schedules by region, rate modifiers, types of service, and places of service. Researchers Develop Photon-counting CT Protocol to Evaluate Lung Function

With the proposed protocol, we have also been able to answer many other questions related to post-COVID-19 condition, such as the detection of acute and chronic pulmonary emboli on CT angiography.

New CT technology allows for a comprehensive, simultaneous evaluation of lung structure and function, something not possible with standard CT, according to a study published in Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Chest CT is the imaging method of choice for analyzing lung disease and tracking changes over time. However, CT studies of lung function and perfusion, or blood flow, require dedicated protocols that cannot be combined.

Researchers in Germany and the Netherlands developed a chest imaging protocol that yields information on structure and function of the lungs as a one-stop-shop procedure. The protocol uses recently introduced photon-counting CT technology. Photon-counting CT enables high image quality at a radiation dose below that of a standard chest CT. In addition, it provides better spatial resolution and options for spectral imaging, which uses energy information from the X-rays to characterize tissue composition. The new protocol requires advanced software but no additional hardware.

The researchers studied the protocol in 197 patients with clinically indicated CT for various known and unknown lung function impairment. After administration of an intravenous contrast agent, the photon-counting CT scan was taken when the patients inhaled. This was followed by a scan when the patients exhaled.

In 166 patients, the researchers were able to acquire all CT-derived parameters, for a success rate of 85%.

The protocol allowed for simultaneous evaluation of lung structure, ventilation, vasculature and perfusion of the parenchyma, the region of the lungs that contain the gas-exchanging alveoli. The alveoli are tiny air sacs where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and out. The protocol showed advantages over standard CT.

“The improvement in the contrast-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution of the pulmonary blood volume images was substantial,” said study senior author Hoen-oh Shin, M.D., professor of radiology at the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany. “In my opinion, the most important advantage is the significantly improved spectral resolution, which enables new applications such as functional imaging of the lungs with CT.”

The photon-counting CT protocol has other promising applications in lung imaging. It can provide important preoperative identification of areas of emphysema and perfusion defects in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, a progressive disease caused by blood clots that do not clear from the lungs.

Postoperatively, the protocol allowed evaluation of surgical success and was helpful in assessing the lungs after lung or stem cell transplant procedures. It may also be useful in follow-up of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and looking at pathological findings in the lung tissue.

“We believe that the proposed protocol is generally valuable for diseases with known or unknown lung function impairment,” Dr. Shin said.

Dr. Shin and colleagues first applied the protocol to patients with interstitial lung disease, a group of diseases that cause progressive scarring of the lung tissue. They then expanded the applications to include post-COVID-19 condition where interstitial lung disease sometimes develops.

“With the proposed protocol, we have also been able to answer many other questions related to post-COVID-19 condition, such as the detection of acute and chronic pulmonary emboli on CT angiography, and we are currently investigating whether perfusion changes can be quantified in microvascular damage or inflammatory areas,” Dr. Shin said.

“Regional ventilation and perfusion depend on patient position and gravity, among other factors,” Dr. Shin said. “Further studies are needed to assess the dependence on position and depth of breathing, as well as the reproducibility of the measurements.”
