SIA and Other Organizations Urge Congress to Consider Facts and Benefits of Facial Recognition

“Facial recognition technology has benefited Americans in many ways, such as helping to fight human trafficking, thwart identity thieves and improve passenger facilitation at airports and enhance aviation security.” – Don Erickson, CEO, SIA

The Security Industry Association (SIA) – as part of a coalition of organizations and trade associations – has issued a letter to Congress outlining its concerns regarding potential bans on public-sector uses of facial recognition technology. The letter authors encourage the federal government to collaborate with all stakeholders to address concerns about the use of facial recognition technology and recommend federal leaders provide a consistent set of rules across the United States.

In an Oct. 16 letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), the coalition – which includes SIA, the Airports Council International – North America, the American Association of Airport Executives, the Consumer Technology Association, the Global Business Travel Association, the Identification Technology Association, the Information Biometrics + Identity Association, NetChoice and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – outlined the history of facial recognition and its prevalent use across various industries, the potential consequences of a moratorium on the technology and recent innovation and work to ethically and responsibly govern the technology.

“Recent calls for bans on facial recognition technology are based on a misleading picture of how the technology works and is used today,” said Don Erickson, CEO of SIA. “Facial recognition technology has benefited Americans in many ways, such as helping to fight human trafficking, thwart identity thieves and improve passenger facilitation at airports and enhance aviation security. As a representative of companies that provide and leverage facial recognition, SIA believes this advanced technology should be used in a safe, accurate and effective way, and we look forward to working with Congress to help the U.S. set the example on how to ethically and responsibly govern this technology.”

As part of its ongoing efforts to address confusion about facial recognition and increase awareness of its beneficial uses, SIA recently produced the resource Face Facts: Dispelling Common Myths Associated With Facial Recognition Technology. This document explores the facial recognition technology landscape and how the technology works, outlines how government and law enforcement use the technology and addresses confusion and common myths. Additionally, the resource shares examples of effective use of the technology to help locate missing children, mitigate travel document fraud and improve processes like storefront security and mobile banking.

Hospital M&A Activity Held Steady in Q3:2019, According to Acquisition Data From Healthcaremanda.Com

News Image

“The third quarter activity was notable for the number of REIT deals by Medical Properties Trust, but also for the number of smaller not-for-profits joining larger regional systems. All across the country, the standalone community hospitals are finding it financially difficult to stay independent.”

Hospital M&A activity held steady with 21 transactions in both the second and third quarters of 2019, according to new acquisition data from HealthCareMandA.com. The most recent quarter was down 20% compared with the same period in 2018, when 25 deals were announced. Dollar volume was up sharply compared with the second quarter, totaling nearly $5.0 billion, a 291% increase. Year over year, Q3:19 spending was down 41% versus the $8.4 billion reported in the same quarter in 2018, based on disclosed prices.

Medical Properties Trust, a healthcare real estate investment trust, was the most active acquirer in this sector, with four deals. The REIT paid more than $1.5 billion to acquire the real estate assets of 14 acute care hospitals and two behavioral health hospitals owned by Prospect Medical Holdings in California. The company also acquired seven newly constructed community hospitals operated by Saint Luke’s Health System around Kansas City, Missouri for $145 million. Private equity firm TPG Capital was busy in southeast Asia. It sold Hong Kong-based United Family Healthcare (nine hospitals and 14 ambulatory clinics in China) to New Frontier Corporation for $1.3 billion, then teamed up with Malaysia’s Hong Leong Group to acquire 17 hospitals across Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam for $1.2 billion from Columbia Asia Group.

“The third quarter activity was notable for the number of REIT deals by Medical Properties Trust, but also for the number of smaller not-for-profits joining larger regional systems,” stated Lisa E. Phillips, editor of the Health Care M&A Report, which publishes the data. “All across the country, the standalone community hospitals are finding it financially difficult to stay independent.”

All quarterly results are published in The Health Care M&A Report for all 13 sectors of health care, which is part of the HealthCareMandA.com investment research source. FoodLogiQ to Provide Insight on Traceability at FDA’s “New Era of Smarter Food Safety” Public Meeting in Washington, DC

“We look forward to collaborating with our colleagues from across the country as we rise to the challenge of ensuring safe food for all.” – Sean O’Leary, FoodLogiQ CEO

Members of the senior leadership team from FoodLogiQ, the leading provider of food safety, traceability, and supply chain transparency software, will travel to Washington, DC, on Monday, October 21 to provide comment at the FDA Public Meeting “A New Era of Smarter Food Safety.” The highly-anticipated event kicks off an initiative that focuses on food traceability, digital technology and evolving food business models.

According to Dr. Norman (Ned) Sharpless, acting FDA Commissioner, “This new initiative is intended to build on FDA’s efforts to implement the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act by leveraging, among other things, the use of new and emerging technologies, as well as new approaches to some of the food system’s biggest food safety challenges.”

FoodLogiQ CEO Sean O’Leary will attend the FDA meeting, as well as Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Katy Jones, and Vice President of Supply Chain Strategy and Insights Julie McGill. During the open public comment portion of the program, McGill will speak on behalf of FoodLogiQ, sharing commentary on the topic of traceability. McGill is an industry expert on the subject, as she previously spent over 15 years with GS1 US. There she led the Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative, working with manufacturers, distributors, operators and supply chain partners to increase efficiencies and build a foundation for traceability and supply chain visibility through the use of GS1 standards. McGill was recently selected as one of the “Five Food Logistics Champions You Need to Know” by Food Logistics Magazine.

“FoodLogiQ is honored to have the opportunity to share our intricate knowledge of the food supply chain, as well as best practices regarding whole chain traceability during this monumental meeting with the FDA and other food industry leaders,” says O’Leary. “Since 2006, FoodLogiQ has been developing solutions that meet the increasingly complex global food chain issues, and we look forward to collaborating with our colleagues from across the country as we rise to the challenge of ensuring safe food for all.”

End-to-end traceability—the ability to trace a product from its original source all the way to market—is the foundation for any comprehensive food safety program and a critical piece of the FDA’s efforts to bring increased attention to this global issue. With a 16-year history of traceability experience, FoodLogiQ dominates the food safety space and is perfectly poised to play a key role in the FDA’s new initiative.

The Agenda

More than 100 FDA experts representing the Office of Food Policy and Response, the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, the Office of Regulatory Affairs, the Center for Veterinary Medicine, and several individuals from the Office of the Commissioner participated in brainstorming sessions to determine the most critical topics for the meeting discussion. Those include:

Tech-enabled Traceability and Foodborne Outbreak Response

Smarter Tools and Approaches for Prevention

New Business Models and Retail Modernization

Food Safety Culture

The FDA’s goal for the meeting is to engage stakeholders and to foster a dialogue on how to most effectively prepare for the work that lies ahead as part of the New Era of Smarter Food Safety. In early 2020, FDA plans to release a blueprint that outlines critical steps to protect public health and keep pace with the ever-changing global food supply chain.

Very compact precision positioning stages with long travel ranges are also offered – for example the L-505 motorized miniature precision linear stage and the U-628 miniature rotary table with ultrasonic-direct drive motor. These highly precise components are employed in a ground-breaking light-sheet microscope project pioneered by the Huisekn Lab at the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, WI. Key factors are the compact design, reliability, high precision, and speed of the motion modules. Prior to this project, 2 complete systems had to be used to achieve Light Sheet Florescence Microscopy (LSFM). This new modular microscope illuminates and detects samples by employing two separate optical systems and will be easy to transport, eliminating shipping of sensitive samples.

Dr. Cristobal Valdez, President of Richland Community College, accepting the Gold award for Excellence in Academic Partnerships

On a daily basis, we see the positive effects of working on institutional culture. It is what has improved employee satisfaction, student success, retention and completion and has made Richland a strong community partner and attracts exceptional employees to continue the effort.

Partners In Leadership, LLC, the firm that guides clients in defining Key Results™, shaping Cultural Beliefs®, and solving Accountability Gaps, and that is now introducing cutting-edge digital, learning, and leadership tools, proudly announces they received the Gold Award in the Excellence in Academic Partnerships category in Chief Learning Officer magazine’s CLO 2019 Learning In Practice Awards.

The Learning In Practice Awards’ Excellence in Academic Partnerships category recognizes accredited academic learning institutions that have partnered with an organization in the past year to develop skills, competency or knowledge in a general employee population. The work and results that have emerged from the consulting firm’s partnership with Richland Community College is what won this national recognition.

“Shortly after my arrival at Richland, we began to work with Partners In Leadership to create the culture we desired as a campus community,” said Dr. Cristobal Valdez, President of Richland Community College. “This award is just one recognition of this essential work. On a daily basis, we see the positive effects of working on institutional culture. It is what has improved employee satisfaction, student success, retention and completion and has made Richland a strong community partner and attracts exceptional employees to continue the effort.”

Dr. Valdez saw the challenges that were hindering the institution’s capability of operating to full potential, including economic instability, declining student retention and enrollment, and low levels of trust and communication. Richland started its work with Partners In Leadership in 2017, utilizing the Accountability Builder® program’s workshops and assessments to break down silos and achieve the institution’s three Key Results within three years.

In less than two years, Richland has already met their Key Results:

  • Trust – focusing on an increase in perception of a positive campus culture – from 46% to 76% or an increase of 65%
  • Grow – enrollment grow of nearly 15% this fall and over 20% this past summer, the highest institutional enrollment since 2016. Contributing to this enrollment growth was a 57% increase in next term student retention and 370% increase in Fall to Fall student retention
  • Thrive – 25% reserve and a 2% positive operating margin, the strongest financial position the College has been in for 7 years

“We are thrilled for Dr. Valdez and Richland Community College,” said Mattson Newell, Senior Partner at Partners In Leadership. “In a day and age where the importance of organizational culture is constantly discussed, but doesn’t always translate to actions, Dr. Valdez and his leadership team have led by example and helped the entire organization champion Partners In Leadership’s process to create a Culture of Accountability to deliver their results. We are honored to continue our partnership with them and are excited to see their continued success.”

The 2019-20 Dig Pink Challenge powered by All Volleyball

The Dig Pink Challenge Powered by All Volleyball is a fundraising event that brings breast cancer awareness and volleyball together. The goal is to bring the volleyball community together in fun-filled ways to raise funds for The Side-Out Foundation. Side-Out is the only organization that uses volleyball to raise money for stage IV metastatic breast cancer research, which is the least funded and deadliest form of the disease.

From its beginning 5 years ago, the Dig Pink Challenge has traditionally featured a local volleyball match showcasing the defending Missouri state champions against an opponent of their choosing. These events have been filled with fundraising opportunities alongside some great competition on the court. Games with prizes, 50/50 raffles, silent auctions, raffle baskets and more all raised money for the Side-Out Foundation.

In 2018, All Volleyball expanded slightly outside of the St. Louis area and partnered with 8 schools from across the nation. Each school held its own Dig Pink campaign and donated all proceeds to The Side-Out Foundation. All Volleyball knows how hard it can be to start a fundraiser for the first time, so they matched up to $500 in each school’s campaign. It was an encouraging experience for the teams they partnered with, many who plan to work with the Side-Out Foundation in the future.

After last year’s success, All Volleyball is expanding the 2019-2020 Dig Pink Challenge. With a longer timeframe, more teams and more locations, All Volleyball hopes to achieve the ultimate goal of fostering Side-Out’s mission. This year’s application window will expand to include girls high school, girls club and boys high school volleyball seasons. Due to the increased interest of the Dig Pink Challenge and the All Volleyball’s commitment to serving their customers, participating teams must be current or new customers of All Volleyball. Once selected, each team will get their own online campaign page, access to All Volleyball and Side-Out staff for guidance and a monetary match up to $500 from All Volleyball when they finish fundraising.

In 5 years, the Dig Pink Challenge has raised over $100,000 for breast cancer research while introducing dozens of teams to the Side-Out Foundation. With the potential to add 30 more teams to that list, this could be the most successful year yet. Beyond the success and excitement around the program, the true meaning of why All Volleyball chooses to serve remains the same: to bring hope and support to those and their families affected by stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

More About All Volleyball Inc.

All Volleyball, Inc. is proud to be the trusted industry expert since 1995. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, this volleyball retailer and team dealer has always had a passion for helping others and solving problems on and off the volleyball court. All Volleyball Serves is the philanthropic extension of the company responsible for heading up efforts like the Dig Pink Challenge.

More About The Side-Out Foundation

The Side-Out Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Fairfax, Virginia that harnesses the power of volleyball players to host Dig Pink volleyball initiatives that raise money for critical research of late-stage metastatic breast cancer – the least funded form of breast cancer research. Over the years, Side-Out has raised more than $14 million for research on the disease, has completed two successful clinical trials using Side-Out’s individualized treatment protocols and is currently in the midst of a third trial, its largest yet.
