Captain Sully Sullenberger Named 2021 Recipient of ASHA’s Prestigious Annie Glenn Award

[ad_1]

Captain Sullenberger’s powerful words resonated not only with the millions of Americans, and people worldwide, who stutter—but with the public at large.

Captain Sully Sullenberger will receive the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) most prestigious public honor, the Annie Glenn Award, on November 19, 2021, at the ASHA Convention in Washington, D.C.

Captain Sullenberger is best known for the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson”—his safe landing of a US Airways passenger flight on the Hudson River after both engines failed.

Last year, during the U.S. presidential campaign that saw numerous high-profile instances of politicians, media commentators, and other public figures mocking now-President Joe Biden’s stutter, Captain Sullenberger penned a widely hailed op-ed in The New York Times: “Like Joe Biden, I Once Stuttered, Too. I Dare You to Mock Me.”

In it, he wrote: “The fact that I once stuttered did not keep me from being a successful U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, an airline pilot, or even a public speaker.

“And on that frigid day in January 2009, when I had to tell the air traffic controller at New York Departure Control that I was about to land US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River, after a bird strike following takeoff caused both engines to fail, my words came out with precision and control, even in the stress of a life-threatening emergency.”

ASHA President A. Lynn Williams, PhD, CCC-SLP, remarked, “Captain Sullenberger’s powerful words resonated not only with the millions of Americans, and people worldwide, who stutter—but with the public at large. We are honored to present him with ASHA’s most esteemed public honor [the Annie Glenn Award] for using his platform to denounce the unacceptable mocking and bullying of people who stutter—and for showing those who stutter that the sky’s the limit when it comes to what they can achieve in their lives.”

In his op-ed, Captain Sullenberger concluded with these remarks: “So, to every child who feels today, what I felt, after hearing those cruel remarks by an adult who should know better, here is what I want you to know:

“You are fine, just as you are. You can do any job you dream of when you grow up. You can be a pilot who lands your plane on a river and helps save lives, or a president who treats people with respect, rather than making fun of them. You can become a teacher to kids who stutter. A speech disorder is a lot easier to treat than a character defect. You become a true leader, not because of how you speak, but because of what you have to say—and the challenges you have overcome to help others. Ignore kids (and adults) who are mean, or don’t know what it feels like to stutter. Respond by showing them how to be kind, polite, respectful and generous, to be brave enough to try big things, even though you are not perfect.”

Named for lifelong advocate Annie Glenn, ASHA’s Annie Award honors those who have made a positive impact on the lives of people with communication disorders. Mrs. Glenn, who experienced a severe stutter well into her adult years, worked tirelessly for roughly 40 years as a champion for people with speech, language, and hearing disorders before her passing in 2020 at 100 years of age.

Past recipients of the Annie Glenn Award include actors James Earl Jones and Julie Andrews; former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and U.S. Senator and retired astronaut Mark Kelly; and President Joe Biden.

MADD and National Presenting Sponsor Waymo Kick Off 35th Anniversary of Tie One On for Safety Holiday Campaign

[ad_1]

News Image

Everyone deserves to have fun and get home safe during the holidays. At Waymo, we’re proud to display red ribbons on our entire fleet and offer a safe mode of transportation to our Waymo One riders in Phoenix and San Francisco this holiday season.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Waymo launched the 35th Anniversary Tie One On for Safety Holiday Campaign today at Waymo’s Chandler operations center, where the entire fleet of autonomously driven vehicles displayed a red ribbon reminder to always designate a non-drinking driver.

Tie One On for Safety is MADD’s longest-running Designated Driver Campaign. Launched in 2006, “tie one on” is a throwback to the days when people would use the term as slang for consuming alcohol. For the past 35 years, MADD has used the phrase to demonstrate how everyone can tie a red ribbon – or more recently place red ribbon magnets or decals – on their car as a reminder to always designate a non-drinking driver. That message is especially important when holiday travel, parties, and family gatherings put more people on the roads.

“As we enter the busy holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, we want everyone to stay safe and enjoy this festive time by making sure plans for a designated driver are a top priority,” said MADD National President Alex Otte. “Whether you’re going out or hosting friends and family at home, planning for a non-drinking driver or confirming your guests have one is the most important decision you can make.”

“Everyone deserves to have fun and get home safe during the holidays,” said Mauricio Peña, Waymo’s chief safety officer. “At Waymo, we’re proud to display red ribbons on our entire fleet — from our all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs in California to our Class 8 trucks in Dallas — and offer a safe mode of transportation to our Waymo One riders in Phoenix and San Francisco this holiday season.”

The holidays are traditionally more dangerous on America’s roads, and recent traffic fatality estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show tragedies have skyrocketed during the pandemic largely due to impaired driving, speeding and not wearing seatbelts. An estimated 20,160 people died in traffic crashes in the first half of 2021, which is the largest number of projected traffic fatalities in that time frame since 2006. Other NHTSA reports show an alarming increase in the presence of alcohol and other drugs – and combinations of more than one impairing substance – in seriously and fatally injured patients at five trauma centers since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

“We know the past year and a half has been like no other, and we hope everyone will do their part to stop this public safety crisis,” Otte said. “It will take everyone to stop these tragedies, and we are so grateful to Waymo for their partnership and for sharing our vision of zero deaths and zero injuries caused by drunk and drug-impaired driving.”

Nanotech Energy Honored as CES 2022 Innovation Award Winner in Sustainability, Eco-Design & Smart Energy Category

[ad_1]

Nanotech Energy, the world’s leading manufacturer of graphene and the only producer of non-flammable, graphene-based batteries on the market

Building safer batteries is critical for the future of energy storage. Our proprietary, non-flammable lithium-ion batteries are infinitely safer and higher performing than the industry status quo, and to be recognized for these accomplishments at CES 2022, is a significant honor.

Nanotech Energy, the leading producer of high-performance, graphene-based energy storage, today announced that its non-flammable Graphene-Organolyte™ batteries have been named a CES® 2022 Innovation Award Winner in the Sustainability, Eco-Design & Smart Energy category. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, the CES Innovation Awards program is an annual competition honoring outstanding design and engineering in 27 consumer technology product categories. Awards are given out in advance of CES 2022, the world’s most influential consumer technology event, which takes place January 5-8, 2021 in Las Vegas. An elite panel of industry expert judges, including members of the media, designers, engineers and more, reviewed a record 1800+ submissions based on innovation, engineering and functionality, aesthetic and design. A full list of the CES 2022 Innovation Award winners, including product descriptions and photos, can be found at CES.tech/innovation.

Additionally, Nanotech Energy is the only producer of non-flammable, graphene-based batteries on the market — batteries that enable a future and realize graphene’s potential to create real-world benefits, from safer, more cost-efficient, environmentally-friendly personal electronic devices to creating a more efficient way to harness renewable energy. Nanotech Energy’s proprietary electrolyte, Graphene-Organolyte, is not only stable and non-flammable — it’s also made from inexpensive materials and is easy to manufacture. During a press conference held in Reno, Nevada earlier in November, the company announced a new state-of-the-art production facility to increase manufacturing capacity for the U.S. and other markets, in support of Nanotech Energy’s exponential international expansion.

“Imagine a world where your smartphone charges in just seconds. And then imagine that instead of traditional lithium-ion batteries that lose their charge very quickly, you’re able to use long-lasting energy storage systems that can last three times longer on a single charge and are also extremely safe. That’s just a snapshot of a world charged by Nanotech Energy’s batteries,” said Jack Kavanaugh, Chairman, CEO and co-founder of Nanotech Energy. “Building safer batteries is critical for the future of energy storage. Our proprietary, non-flammable lithium-ion batteries are infinitely safer and higher performing than the industry status quo, and to be recognized for these accomplishments at CES 2022, the world’s largest product technology showcase, is a significant honor.”

Key Product Facts:

1.    Higher performance: Nanotech Energy’s proprietary non-flammable graphene-based battery technology demonstrated more than 1400 cycles (nearly 10 years) of use for 80% cut-off, compared to a traditional lithium-ion battery’s 300-500 cycles (about two to three years). Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, Nanotech Energy’s batteries also maintain performance even during extreme weather (-40°C to +60°C / -40°F to +140°F), and decrease charge times significantly. Additionally, Nanotech Energy batteries can enable electric cars to achieve a range of more than 400 miles and operate in extreme weather conditions (heat or cold).

2.    Safer: In tests, traditional lithium-ion batteries catch fire immediately when penetrated, reaching extreme temperatures of nearly 750⁰C (1382⁰F). Nanotech Energy batteries vent some fumes with a maximum observed temperature of 100⁰C, but are not flammable and do not ignite. They also hold their charge at temperatures as high as 356°F (180°C), while commercial batteries discharge their energy at nearly 230°F (110⁰C). Thermal stability is critical to preventing thermal runaway, which causes battery fires, providing a promising solution to the long-standing safety problems of lithium-ion batteries.

3.    Sustainable: Traditional lithium-ion batteries are not sustainable. They have their own sustainability issues due to the lack of effective methods for recycling the valuable metals (such as nickel, cobalt, manganese and lithium) that constitute the battery at the end of its life. Graphene is an abundant resource that can be produced more ethically and sustainably. Graphene also enables the use of less metals in battery manufacture, making the recycling of lithium-ion batteries more sustainable. Traditional lithium-ion batteries last 300-500 cycles (about two to three years); Nanotech Energy’s proprietary non-flammable graphene-based battery technology demonstrated more than 1400 cycles (nearly 10 years), with options for more sustainable models that are easily recycled. Additionally, by extending the lifetime of the battery from two to three years to more than ten years, Nanotech Energy’s batteries promise to produce more sustainable energy storage systems due to the use of fewer batteries.

Nanotech Energy will showcase its award-winning products in the Innovation Awards Showcase at CES 2022 in Las Vegas and will participate as an exhibitor in Eureka Park at the Venetian Expo, Booth #633339. Contact sales@nanotechenergy.com to schedule a meeting. A media kit is available here.

[ad_1]

Angelica Cervantes, CNA at Harbor House Memory Care, going through the Dementia Live Experience.

“… It’s a unique experience that allows caregivers to feel what it’s like to live with dementia, and the results are astounding. Most often, I hear phrases such as ‘I had no idea’ or ‘wow, now I know’—what better way to teach empathy towards those we have the honor of caring for.”

Dementia Live™ is an innovative program designed by a team of dementia, sensitivity and awareness, and professional development experts from the nationally recognized AGE-u-cate® Training Institute headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Using specialized gear within a safe, experiential setting, Dementia Live™ provides participants a real-life simulation of what it must be like to live with dementia. Participants gain greater awareness and understanding of the constant struggles (24/7) affecting persons with dementia. Greater understanding leads to more sensitive care partnering.

The Dementia Live program is the newest tool in the powerful arena of sensitivity awareness training being used by the booming number of direct care staff, family caregivers, healthcare professionals, and college and university students. Recently certified as a Dementia Live Coach, Leslee Schafer began coaching her team through the experience.

“I feel it’s everyone’s responsibility to continue the conversation about and educate others on dementia and sharing the Dementia Live experience with others is just one way to accomplish that. It’s a unique experience that allows caregivers to feel what it’s like to live with dementia, and the results are astounding. Most often, I hear phrases such as ‘I had no idea’ or ‘wow, now I know’—what better way to teach empathy towards those we have the honor of caring for,” says Leslee Schafer, Executive Director at Harbor House Memory Care.

When coaching our team members, I end our session with the question, “Now that you’ve experienced dementia, what will you do differently? The responses may vary depending on what acuity or behaviors our residents are exhibiting, but it continues the conversation and allows for our team to share their experiences regarding what works and what doesn’t when providing care to someone with dementia.”

Pam Brandon, President and Founder of the AGE-u-cate Training Institute, said, “We must equip those who are caring for and serving our aging population to better understand their challenges. We are living in a fast-aging world.”
