Seton Hall University and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine Expand Interprofessional Medication-Assisted Treatment Training Grant for Opioid-Use Disorders

[ad_1]

“We believe this work is making a difference for the future of treating this major health problem,” said Kathleen Neville, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, associate dean of graduate studies and research at the Seton Hall College of Nursing, and the grant’s principal investigator.

An innovative opioid treatment federal grant program will fund critical training through the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, the Seton Hall University College of Nursing and the Seton Hall University School of Health and Medical Sciences.

The “Expanded Interprofessional Medication-Assisted Treatment Training Program” is a three-year grant totaling about $450,000 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The grant allows the training of future clinicians to prescribe medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services for individuals with an opioid use disorder (OUD). The new three-year grant follows a former three-year grant which concluded this summer with a major conference.

“We believe this work is making a difference for the future of treating this major health problem,” said Kathleen Neville, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, associate dean of graduate studies and research at the Seton Hall College of Nursing, and the grant’s principal investigator. “In our first grant, more than 400 students in our three schools have received training. Now in our new grant, we are engaging in partnership with Monmouth University to train their nurse practitioner and physician assistant students, anticipating that 1,000 students will be DATA-waivered to prescribe MAT after graduation and be more prepared to address healthcare disparities and the opioid epidemic.”

“This collaborative project allows us to make an impact at the very foundation of medicine, providing training to future clinicians to raise awareness of, and impart solutions to, the challenges brought about by the opioid epidemic,” said Stanley R. Terlecky, Ph.D., associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies, and chair of Medical Sciences at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, another one of the project’s leaders. “We look forward to continuing and indeed, expanding this good work for another three years.”

The grant covers training for nurse practitioner, physician assistant and medical students regarding MAT for individuals with opioid-use disorders. Upon completion of the training, all students receive a Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA) waiver – formally permitting prescription of the powerful anti-opioid dependency drug buprenorphine.

According to Brian B. Shulman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow, FASAHP, FNAP, dean of the School of Health and Medical Sciences, “The school’s physician assistant (PA) students participation in this second SAMHSA grant reaffirms not only expanding the role of the PA as an integral member of the interprofessional healthcare team but also reaffirms our commitment to preparing future healthcare practitioners and leaders to make a difference in the lives of the individuals in their care.”

The first three-year grant enabled the development and implementation of an interprofessional DATA-Waiver Training Program embedded in the curriculum in the three schools. This DATA-Waiver program consists of 24 hours of didactic training for nurse practitioner and physician assistant students and eight hours for medical students, followed by 10 hours of clinical training at Hackensack Meridian Health Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead, New Jersey, and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey.

“The initial grant awarded in 2018 represents a successful interprofessional initiative to address a worsening opioid crisis in America,” reported Dean Marie Foley, Ph.D., R.N., College of Nursing. “This second grant addresses vulnerable and underserved populations in urban areas where there are significantly higher mortality rates. Attention to disadvantaged and marginalized populations is very much needed to confront this epidemic.”

The new project will additionally address health disparities and social determinants of health of underserved, vulnerable populations, including those living in urban communities with high mortality rates due to overdose. It is hoped that this outcome will be accomplished through revision of the curriculum and expansion of the training to clinical sites in Newark, NJ including Integrity House, Broadway House, the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, Inc., and Saint James Health. The new grant also extends the training to Monmouth University’s nursing and physician assistant students, a pilot program involving the dissemination of the curriculum to other institutions.

More than 400 students successfully completed the DATA 2000 (DEA-X) Waiver training program by the end of the first three-year grant, making them eligible to obtain a DEA-X to prescribe MAT. With increased numbers of health professionals who can prescribe MAT, treatment recovery outcomes for individuals with opioid use disorders will improve.

The first grant was capped by the virtual conference “Recovery from Opioid Use Disorders: State-of-the-Art Science to Advance Clinical Care,” held July 30 of this year. The event was organized by the project leaders: College of Nursing Associate Dean Neville; School of Health and Medical Sciences Department Chair and Assistant Professor Christopher Hanifin, M.S., PA-C; and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine Associate Dean Terlecky.

“This is a critical need for all clinicians in the 21st century,” said Bonita Stanton, M.D., the founding dean of the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. “The health care workers of the future need to have the tools to address addiction. Through our innovative and highly inter-professional training at the beginning of the careers of our medical, nursing and physician assistant students, we are well-equipping the students to achieve the goal of substantial reduction among their communities in opioid addiction.”

Genuine Health Group Nearly Triples Amount Of Medicare Savings To $11.6 Million

[ad_1]

Genuine Health Group Logo

We anticipate a dramatic growth surge as we expand our model into new markets here in Florida and elsewhere.

Genuine Health Group, a Miami-based healthcare company focused on transitioning physicians to value-based care models, announced its accountable care organization, Genuine Health ACO, saved the Medicare system $11.6 million in 2020. The savings have been confirmed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and underscore the company’s continued success in improving health outcomes while reducing unnecessary medical expenditures. The savings also demonstrate Genuine Health’s rapid growth as measured by the number of physicians affiliated with the company and the total number of Medicare beneficiaries for whom Genuine Health manages care delivery.

Genuine Health ACO’s $11.6 million in savings represents the difference between how much Medicare anticipated spending on healthcare for the Medicare beneficiaries aligned with its ACO and how much the company actually spent. The anticipated amount is adjusted for patients’ age and health circumstances.

At its most basic level, the $11.6 million in savings means Medicare beneficiaries aligned with Genuine Health ACO required less hospital care than similar populations enrolled in traditional Medicare. And fewer hospitalizations are the result of a company-wide, disciplined approach to disease prevention, care access, and medication adherence: the foundation of Genuine Health Group’s approach to value-based care.

“We know what it takes to keep patients healthy and out of the hospital,” said Genuine Health Group’s CEO, Joe Caruncho. “The $11.6 million in savings we achieved is proof-positive that our model works. It’s also a testament to the high-performing physicians that have joined Genuine Health to bring about positive change in the way we care for people on Medicare.”

Genuine Health Group’s latest enterprise, Genuine Health Direct, will continue to advance care delivery aimed squarely at better health outcomes, reducing unnecessary healthcare expenses, and keeping patients healthy. In fact, as a Direct Contracting Entity, or DCE, Genuine Health Direct, which the company launched earlier this year, operates under a “mandate” from CMS to drive down healthcare expenditures, improve health outcomes, and increase health options for Medicare beneficiaries. However, unlike its ACO, Genuine Health Direct keeps 100% of the savings it earns for the Medicare system. In addition, as a DCE, Genuine Health Direct can pay monthly capitation payments to its participating physicians for providing care to their patients with traditional fee-for-service Medicare. Plus, they can earn bonuses for the savings they deliver to Medicare.

“We’re at a defining moment in our evolution,” said chief medical officer and Genuine Health Group co-founder, Dr. Orlando Fernandez-Lopez. “We have proven the power of technology-enabled healthcare delivery as a tool to reduce cost and improve health. Now, we anticipate a dramatic growth surge as we expand our model into new markets here in Florida and elsewhere.”

In addition to nearly tripling its savings over the previous year from $4 million to $11.6 million, Genuine Health ACO achieved a top quality score of 96.87%. The high quality score is based on physicians’ performance as well as Genuine Health’s support programs such as home health visits for patients leaving the hospital, and robust care for patients with chronic conditions, including those with diabetes, congestive heart failure, and COPD.

This year, Genuine Health Group received additional recognitions, including an “Excellence in Healthcare” award for CEO Joe Caruncho from South Florida Business & Wealth and a place on South Florida Business Journal’s “Fast 50” list, which recognizes the fastest-growing companies in South Florida. Genuine Health Group will be featured as one of the “Hispanic-Owned Businesses” highlighted by the South Florida Business Journal.

This breakthrough technology is a game changer for surgeons like myself. The combination of the reconstructive application and post-operative imaging through ultrasound, in a product we can immediately access, is a significant milestone in our ability to perform complex brain surgery.

Longeviti Neuro Solutions, developer of the first low-profile intracranial devices that meets the functional and reconstructive needs of brain surgery patients, recently announced that it was granted a 510(k) clearance by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ClearFit® OTS (off-the-shelf). With the new 510(k) clearance, Longeviti is the first solutions provider to bring an optically clear, polymethyl methacrylate, off-the-shelf cranial product to the market— enabling surgeons to address urgent, immediate functional and reconstructive clinical needs with the latest technological advancements in neurosurgery.

The ClearFit® OTS product line provides implantable prosthetics to correct and restore cranium bone voids, while also enabling the use of ultrasound for post-operative imaging. The ClearFit® OTS is an extension of the company’s original ClearFit®.

“There is a real need for a product like the ClearFit® OTS, which allows us to utilize this innovative solution when performing cranial surgery under emergency circumstances,” said Justin Singer, MD, Neurosurgeon at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “This breakthrough technology is a game changer for surgeons like myself, and will greatly benefit our patients and their ongoing care. The combination of the reconstructive application and post-operative imaging through ultrasound, in a product we can immediately access, is a significant milestone in our ability to perform complex brain surgery.”

The ClearFit® OTS products are made of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), a sonolucent, biocompatible material with over 40 years of proven clinical performance. The product line is the first-of-its-kind and allows neurosurgeons to use ultrasound imaging post-operatively, reducing radiation exposure.

Research has shown that current post-neurosurgical imaging modalities carry risks due to radiation exposure, and that approximately 29,000 future cancers could be related to CT scan use in the U.S. per year (1).

“The patient is, and always will be, our focus as we continue to develop new neurological solutions,” said Jesse Christopher, CEO of Longeviti. “We’re thrilled to bring the ClearFit® OTS to market, as it grants a new pool of patients access to life-enhancing technology. We’re looking forward to working with surgeons to bring this innovative solution to more patients around the globe.”

Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium Publishes Best Practice for Evaluating Autonomous Vehicle Safety Performance

[ad_1]

SAE International logo

This is another important step in engendering public trust and confidence in the testing and deployment of automated vehicles. – Amy Chu, Director of AVSC

The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium™ (AVSC) today announced the availability of a new best practice titled, Evaluation of Behavioral Competencies for Automated Driving System Dedicated Vehicles (ADS-DVs). The new guidelines integrate the AVSC’s Metrics and Methods for Assessing Safety Performance of Automated Driving Systems (ADS) and best practice for Operational Design Domain (ODD) to provide a framework for manufacturers to evaluate the behavioral competency of automated vehicles.

“As automated driving system testing advances, it is important that manufacturers communicate information about the safety of their vehicles in a consistent way, while still using testing protocols specific to their systems and ODDs,” said Amy Chu, director of the AVSC. “With the framework in our new best practice, manufacturers can evaluate the safety performance of their vehicles based on an elemental set of behavioral competencies such as maintaining proper lane position or responding appropriately in work zones. Linking behavioral competencies to a key set of scenarios for a given ODD provides relevant evidence for ADS safety performance and increases confidence in the safety performance of an AV.”

The new best practice provides an approach to specify testable AV behavior by:

  •     Clarifying a lexicon surrounding automated vehicle behaviors,
  •     Enumerating an elemental set of behaviors, and
  •     Demonstrating how to derive metrics to evaluate AV behavioral competence.

Real-world driving involves complex interactions among numerous systems. In order to evaluate as many ADS subtasks within the DDT as possible, developers align them to a generalized set of behaviors. Developers then use system engineering techniques to map these behaviors to an elemental set of behavioral competencies. In other words, competence is considered as a collection of behaviors that cover a context-relevant and predictable part of the broader driving task. Proficiency across a set of behavioral competencies provides directional indication of the ADS-DV safety performance. For example, in the context of driving on a highway while maintaining a lane and approaching another vehicle, the ADS-DV would be expected to keep a safe distance, maintain the speed limit, and monitor the behavior of the vehicle in front of it while preparing to react if the scenario changes.

Human driver tests evaluate candidates against a small number of tasks which represent driving across a variety of different, related scenarios. Although human driving tests reflect a person’s ability to execute key driving tasks and knowledge of driving law, they do not reflect a human’s driving skill in every situation.

“Providing a framework for manufacturers to link behavioral competencies to key scenarios provides evidence for ADS safety performance that manufacturers can use to build their case for safety. This is another important step in engendering public trust and confidence in the testing and deployment of automated vehicles,” added Chu.

Concierge Service for the Cannacurious™ Comes to Massachusetts

[ad_1]

LucidaClub reimagines the cannabis buying experience for the Cannacurious in Massachusetts, with a beta launch this month in partnership with Cape Cod Cannabis in Wellfleet, MA.

The majority of adults are curious about the benefits of cannabis, know the experience they want, but are unsure how to proceed. LucidaClub offers a members-only, seamless eCommerce platform paired with Sherpa-level guidance and access to the best products from top retailers. Members of LucidaClub receive individual consultations with a personal cannabis curator to discuss all questions, concerns, and desired results.

LucidaClub is launching with three experiences: Calm, Sleep and Focus. They will be adding more to their foundational offerings, along with more specialty experiences, in short order. LucidaClub’s Curator will hand pick strains and high-quality products that are tailored to fit your lifestyle and desired outcome.

“Today’s cannabis retail experience works great for those who know what they want. We’ve created LucidaClub for the rest of us – the 75% of adults who can describe the benefits they desire but just don’t know how to get started. We have purpose-built a company dedicated to making the cannabis buying process simple, convenient and welcoming,” said LucidaClub Founder and CEO, Jack Roosevelt.

The idea for LucidaClub came to Roosevelt when he bought cannabis for the first time after legalization. “I’m 6’ 8”. I don’t intimidate easily. I thought I knew what I was doing but when I was handed a menu with an insane array of options and obscure terms, I just panicked and chose a ‘tincture’ because I liked the word. I had no idea what to do with it and it’s still sitting on my shelf.”

On track to officially launch in early 2022, LucidaClub has operations in Massachusetts and will expand into other adult-use states later in the year. Technical development of the platform was completed at the end of Q3 and the company is already gaining interest from cannabis retailers interested in partnering. “Competition is incredibly strong among adult-use retailers. LucidaClub welcome the Cannacurious into the cannabis market, helping our Retail Partners sell to consumers who they are not yet reaching,” said Roosevelt.

“We could not be more excited about partnering with Cape Cod Cannabis (“CCC”). We will only partner with the best 10 to 12 retailers in Massachusetts. When we sat down earlier this year and wrote our ‘dream list’ of Retail Partners CCC was right at the top,” said Roosevelt. “Not only does CCC have a fantastic location that is incredibly welcoming, but everything about their business is focused on offering only the best for their customers from the variety and quality of their products to how friendly and knowledgeable their team is. Culturally and philosophically, we could not have found a better launch partner.”

“Cape Cod Cannabis is thrilled to partner with LucidaClub and welcome their members to our store,” commented Derek D’Ambrosio of Cape Cod Cannabis. “LucidaClub welcomes the Cannacurious to our store and the Massachusetts cannabis market. We are excited to be a part of continued education and demystification for all interested consumers.”

Register to become a member or a partnering dispensary at LucidaClub.com. Members must verify that they are at least 21 years of age.

Dr. Debashish Bose and The Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy to Participate in Study of Nanoknife for Late Stage Pancreatic Cancer

[ad_1]

Debashish Bose, M.D., Medical Director, The Center for Hepatobiliary Disease at Mercy; Associate Director, Surgical Oncology at Mercy

Debashish Bose, M.D., Medical Director, The Center for Hepatobiliary Disease at Mercy; Associate Director, Surgical Oncology at Mercy

“The study’s objectives include determining if Nanoknife increases patients’ overall survival, provides a more effective treatment than standard modalities, reduces cancer pain…and improves patient quality of life.” — Debashish Bose, M.D., PhD, FACS of Surgical Oncology at Mercy.

Debashish Bose, M.D., Medical Director, The Center for Hepatobiliary Disease at Mercy, and Associate Director, Surgical Oncology at Mercy, The Institute for Cancer Care, is the principal investigator for a new study sponsored by AngioDynamics regarding the safety and efficacy of the Nanoknife System for the ablation (surgical removal) of Stage 3 pancreatic adenocarcinoma (cancer). Stage 3 means that the cancer has spread outside the pancreas, such as to the blood vessels near the pancreas.

AngioDynamics is a global provider of industry-leading medical devices used worldwide for the treatment of cancer and peripheral vascular disease. Developed by AngioDynamics, the NanoKnife System is a next-generation technology that physicians have identified as an innovative treatment for pancreatic cancer, as evidenced by 42 publications documenting more than 800 patients that have been treated for Stage III pancreatic cancer with NanoKnife between 2012 to 2019.

With Nanoknife, needles are positioned around the patient’s tumor using ultrasounds or CT scans. Once the needles are in place, electric current is passed between them, killing the cancer cells while avoiding nearby healthy blood vessels, nerves and ducts.

“The NanoKnife serves to permanently damage cancer cells that may be difficult to reach and treat with traditional methods. The probes destroy the diseased tissue using pulsed, low-current, high-voltage electrical energy known as irreversible electroporation (IRE), while preserving surrounding healthy tissue,” Dr. Bose explained.

According to Dr. Bose, Mercy is part of a multi-center, observational study involving more than 500 patients (at least 18 years of age) in as many as 30 hospitals in the U.S. with information gathered over 24-60 months. The study will collect data on half of the Stage 3 pancreatic cancer patients who will undergo the IRE with the Nanoknife System, while the other half will have received “at least three months of standard care and with no evidence that their disease has progressed beyond Stage 3,” he said.

“The study’s objectives include determining if Nanoknife increases patients’ overall survival, provides a more effective treatment than standard modalities, reduces cancer pain and the need for certain pain medications, and improves patient quality of life,” Dr. Bose said.

While most ablative procedures involve using heat or cold, the NanoKnife’s use of electricity allows for greater accuracy in targeting only the cancerous tissue.

“The electrical pulses create small holes in the membranes of the cancer cells, permanently damaging them, causing them to die off,” Dr. Bose said.

Dr. Bose has been utilizing NanoKnife for treating later stage pancreatic cancer for more than 5 years with positive results.

“Pancreatic cancers can be challenging from a treatment perspective, especially where the cancer has spread to nearby organs and vital structures. NanoKnife provides the chance to extend survival by removing a significant portion of hard-to-reach, diseased cells, while preserving functional, critical nerves, blood vessels and ducts. By taking part in this research, we can continue to learn how NanoKnife can benefit the patient on multiple levels, from reducing mortality, pain, the need for chemotherapy, and more,” Dr. Bose said.

Victory Addiction Recovery Center Expands Trauma Treatment Services

[ad_1]

Victory Addiction Recovery Center, a provider of behavioral health and addiction treatment services in Lafayette, La., owned and operated by Summit BHC, has expanded its trauma treatment services to include Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and the Seeking Safety counseling model.

Two of Victory’s clinicians, Peter Barrilleaux, RAC, and Jason Michon, LPC, have completed training in these treatment models. Barrilleaux can now treat patients in the Seeking Safety model, and Michon will provide care when appropriate utilizing cognitive processing therapy (CPT).

“Victory Addiction Recovery Center’s commitment is to improve the lives we touch, and this approach is a cornerstone to how we treat our clients,” said Melanie Courville, CEO of Victory Addiction Recovery Center. “These new services provided by Peter Barrilleaux and Jason Michon continue to enhance the exceptional clinical program and quality of client care provided at our facility.”

CPT is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that has been effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD that have developed after experiencing traumatic events, including child abuse, combat, sexual assault, and natural disasters. This therapy helps clients learn how to challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. CPT is endorsed by the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense and the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies as a best practice for the treatment of PTSD.

Seeking Safety is listed in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. This counseling model is a present-focused, integrative treatment approach developed specifically for co-occurring PTSD and substance abuse. Seeking Safety helps people attain safety from trauma (PTSD) and/or substance abuse and restore lost ideals. It is an extremely safe model, as it directly addresses both trauma and addiction but without requiring clients to delve into the trauma narrative, thus making it relevant to a very broad range of clients.

Barrilleaux has worked with people battling addiction for over 15 years. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and completed training with the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors and Trainers. Barrilleaux has worked at residential treatment centers as well as long-term care facilities in the state of Louisiana. Peter joined the Victory team in 2016.

Michon has worked in the mental health field for over 15 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Louisiana at Lafayette and his master’s degree in mental health counseling from Southern University. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Michon also served as a team leader for NHS, working with clients who have severe and persistent mental illness and co-occurring disorders. He joined the Victory team in 2018.

Victory Addiction Recovery Center’s experienced, licensed clinical and medical staff is committed to guiding clients to full family recovery. Treatment is individualized, focusing on the mind, body, and soul. The staff strives to provide the best substance abuse services possible, moving the community forward through its positive impact on the lives of its clients.
