Nonprofit Organization Men Having Babies Returns to Chicago, Helping Gay Men Become Fathers

Organization Men Having Babies Returns to Chicago, Helping Gay Men Become Fathers

Men Having Babies Returns to Chicago on June 2-3, 2023

Illinois was the first U.S. state to make surrogacy considerably more affordable for same-sex couples and singles with its amendment to the state’s definition of ‘infertility,’ which resulted in inclusion of same-sex couples in insurance coverage for a part of the process.

Known for its unbiased, comprehensive conferences for gay men, the international nonprofit organization Men Having Babies (MHB) returns to Chicago in cooperation with Center on Halsted, along with 19 reputable gay-friendly agencies, clinics, law firms, and other surrogacy providers from the Midwest and beyond.

This year, MHB has made large changes to the itinerary in order to accommodate the needs and interests of gay men who attend the conference, arriving from the whole Midwest area. The new session ‘Social Attitudes Towards Surrogacy’ was added to provide a larger view on ethical surrogacy, and to discuss some of the major misconceptions held by surrogacy opponents, who often use those to attack the gay community.

Also new, the ‘Surrogacy Costs’ session addresses the biggest concern for gay men, who are often overwhelmed by the financial burden that is involved with having a biological child.

Other new and improved sessions including the panel on Egg Donation, and Foundations for a Successful Journey, while the highly popular ‘Personal Stories Panel’ was expanded to include perspectives of fathers through surrogacy, as well as children born via surrogacy, surrogates and egg donors.

Illinois was the first U.S. state to make surrogacy considerably more affordable for same-sex couples and singles with its amendment to the state’s definition of ‘infertility,’ which resulted in inclusion of same-sex couples in insurance coverage for a part of the process. The conference will discuss how to use this benefit, as well as workplace benefits, financial assistance programs and more.

Steven Snyder from IARC Surrogacy, MHB Advisory Board Member and Chicago conference Platinum Sponsor, said: “As a former high school teacher, I fully understand the value of education. The overwhelming strength of both IARC and Men having Babies is focusing primarily on the critical information and education necessary for a successful third-party reproduction process.”

Proceeds from the conference’s sponsorship fees benefit MHB’s Gay Parenting Assistance Program (GPAP), which provides prospective parents with over a million dollars’ worth of cash grants, discounts and free services on an annual basis, from over 130 leading service providers.

Dr. Shamma from IVF Michigan & Ohio, MHB Advisory Board Member and Platinum Sponsor said: “Education and support are the crucial first steps on this exciting journey to becoming a parent. Men Having Babies’ conferences offer all of that and more.”

The majority of the 19 exhibitors at the MHB Midwest conference are supporters of GPAP, as well as the organization’s Membership Benefits Program, including Platinum sponsors IARC Surrogacy and IVF Michigan & Ohio, and additional conference sponsors: Circle Surrogacy, Kindbody, San Diego Fertility Center, Same Love Surrogacy, Fertility Specialists of Texas, Family Source Consultants, Golden Surrogacy, Fertility Centers of Illinois, Worldwide Surrogacy Specialists, Daylight Grow, Law Office of Ryan C. Ferrante, Art Risk Financial & Insurance Solutions, Gift of Life Surrogacy, Ross & Zuckerman LLP, Family Choice Surrogacy, Desai & Miller, and EMD Serono.

A Global Genomics-Based Infectious Disease Monitoring Program

News Image

Any early warning system benefits from including genomics in combination with other data streams.

Biotia, a health tech company based in New York City, announced today its launch of the GeoSeeq Watchtower System. Using genomics, the program provides support for 12 groups monitoring infectious disease hotspots to profile emerging infectious disease risks.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the fragility of global health, social systems and economies and revealed the need for a more robust global infectious disease-monitoring system. With support from The Rockefeller Foundation, the GeoSeeq Watchtower System is generating data to be shared publicly and onboarded onto the GeoSeeq platform, which will serve as an early warning system for the world, allowing health professionals to identify and track emerging infectious diseases in real time and help prevent pandemics.

The GeoSeeq Watchtower System was announced at a recent presentation to the United Nations General Assembly. At that presentation, Dr. Niamh O’Hara, CEO and cofounder of Biotia, outlined that “any early warning system benefits from including genomics in combination with other data streams.” She went on to add that “climate data is especially important because we see changes in climate driving much of the increases in infectious disease risk, especially for vector-borne pathogens.”

The GeoSeeq platform will use data from many sources, including climate forecasts, land- and water-use records, mobility and travel predictions, social determinants of health and epidemiological and microbial genomics. It will leverage the latest advancements in computational technology, access to growing numbers of digital data resources and an increasing pool of global talent to predict, simulate and optimize outbreak response.

An esteemed group of scientists — affiliated with the MetaSUB consortium founded by Dr. Chris Mason of Biotia and Weill Cornell Medicine — was selected to join the program, including the following: Anne Wyllie, Ph.D., Yale School of Public Health; Olayinka Osuolale, Ph.D., Elizade University; Sion Williams, Ph.D., University of Miami; Gregorio Iraola, Ph.D., Kinzbio; Josefina Gutiérrez, DVM, Austral University of Chile; Xavier Rodo, Ph.D., Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal); Sofya Pozdniakova, Ph.D., ISGlobal; Tieliu Shi, Ph.D., East China Normal University; Rafael Freitas, Ph.D., Fiocruz; Gabriel da Luz Wallau, Fiocruz; Soojin Jang, Ph.D., Institut Pasteur Korea; and Erik Andersson, University of Illinois Chicago.

The GeoSeeq Watchtower System is already making significant strides: It is currently running a viral surveillance program at avian migratory hotspots in Chile (led by Dr. Gutiérrez), tracking coinfection of malaria and viruses in patients in a rural community in Nigeria (led by Dr. Osuolale) and monitoring circulating viruses using mosquito metagenomics in Brazil (led by Dr. Freitas).

“Creating this early-warning system for infectious diseases is the goal of our scientific collaboration,” Dr. Freitas said. “We have learned from the past, and an early-warning system like this would have been instrumental in managing the outbreak of the Zika virus outbreak in Brazil in 2015.”

The group is partnering with public health professionals to build dashboards that will help the GeoSeeq Watchtower System positively impact local health. For example, this will help guide local professionals on when and where they should spray for mosquitoes and mobilize resources to specific regions based on risk levels.

“The vision for the early-warning system is to empower local researchers and support the development of community-driven projects and models,” said Dr. David Danko, CTO of Biotia. “In this way, we are democratizing data and access to AI tools and insights.”

Learn more about the impact of GeoSeeq’s early-warning system for infectious diseases and watch highlights from Biotia’s presentation to the United Nations in this video. For more information, visit GeoSeeq.com.

Deep Bio’s AI Algorithm Helps Risk Stratification for Prostate Cancer

It is a meaningful milestone for Deep Bio to conduct a joint research with Johns Hopkins Medicine, one of the top global universities, and the findings are remarkable for prostate cancer diagnosis using AI

Deep Bio, a pioneer in medical AI for digital pathology and cancer diagnostics support software, announced that Dr. Lotan from Johns Hopkins Medicine presented their collaborative research which utilized the deep learning-based algorithm for prostate cancer diagnosis support at a podium session in the American Urological Association (AUA) annual meeting 2023.

This joint research compared human pathologists and an AI algorithm in grading prostate biopsy specimens to predict biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy. Gleason score is one of the key elements to grade prostate cancer and can lead to different clinical decisions. For example, even though 3+4 and 4+3 Gleason scores are identical Gleason score 7s, each has a different prognosis. Gleason 3+4 requires more than active surveillance but tends to fare much better in prognosis than Gleason 4+3.

The study reassessed the diagnoses of 284 patients initially diagnosed as Gleason grade group 2 (Gleason score 3+4) and underwent radical prostatectomy at Johns Hopkins Medicine from 2000 to 2014. This cohort is one of the most challenging cohorts to diagnose since many cases diagnosed 3+4 before could be downgraded to 3+3 or upgraded to 4+3. Johns Hopkins Medicine also has up to 14 years of follow-up data on the patients (an average of 4 years of follow-up) and approximately 16% of the patients went through recurrence of prostate cancer. As the ISUP guidelines have changed in those periods, all of these biopsies were re-graded by two expert genitourinary pathologists and a third expert genitourinary pathologist served as a tiebreak for discrepant reads. To compare human pathologists and AI algorithms, Deep Bio’s AI-based prostate cancer diagnosis support software DeepDx® Prostate analyzed all the biopsies to provide Gleason grades as well.

The results showed poor agreements between the two pathologists, generating a kappa of 0.17 while grading between the consensus pathology read and the AI algorithm generated a slightly higher kappa of 0.33. Importantly, however, the study suggested that the algorithm can act as a tool that stratifies patients for subsequent biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy. This risk stratification has the potential to prevent a lot of unnecessary surgeries and aid in choosing between treatment modalities.

“It is a meaningful milestone for Deep Bio to conduct a joint research with Johns Hopkins Medicine, one of the top global universities, and the findings are remarkable for prostate cancer diagnosis using AI,” said Sun-Woo Kim, CEO of Deep Bio. “As precise diagnosis and personalization have become the crucial factors in deciding medical decisions for medical professionals, we will focus on bringing innovative deep learning technologies that can unlock new insights in cancer diagnosis and treatment” added he.

Deep Bio continues to focus on not only AI diagnostics but also R&D and presenting the results in various international conferences and events. The company also continues to build its presence in the global market through collaboration with overseas digital pathology solution providers in the US, Europe, and India.

About Deep Bio

Deep Bio Inc. is an AI healthcare company with in-house expertise in deep learning and cancer pathology. CIRCULOGENE’s blood-based, gene panel is central to research presented at last weekend’s Digestive Disease Week 2023

CIRCULOGENE LOGO

“Cancer touches everyone, and it is our team’s belief that people want the most actionable, personalized, and accurate health information possible in the shortest amount of time,” said Mike Mullen, President and CEO of CIRCULOGENE.

CIRCULOGENE is an innovative medical technology company transforming precision medicine through the rapid delivery of actionable results. Their blood-based, 88-gene panel, used for detecting circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), was featured in the research study “Analysis of Circulating Tumor DNA for Malignancies Sent at the Time of Endoscopic Visualization: An Optimal Strategy for Diagnosis and Selection of Targeted Therapies.”

Research from the study was presented in Chicago with approximately 800 other abstracts for Digestive Disease Week on Saturday, May 6. The presentation was made by Matthew Grossman, MD, of Atlantic Health System as well as Dawid Nowak, MD; Dhruv Patel, DO; and Devina Adalja, MD, of St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.

The study sent ctDNA on patients with all types of GI malignancy at the time of endoscopic visualization. Results demonstrate how early consideration for ctDNA signatures of cancer can influence first-line chemotherapy and immunotherapy choices.

“This study demonstrates the important role of the gastroenterologist in offering patients superior oncology care,” said Dr. Matthew Grossman, Chief of Gastroenterology at Morristown Medical Center and lead researcher for the study. “Previously, without the use of liquid biopsy, tumor genomics were not considered until the failure of standard chemotherapy. GI doctors have the opportunity to send this test at the time of endoscopy, empowering the oncologist to offer personalized care from day one.”

Advances in genomic sequencing technology have enabled noninvasive detection and molecular profiling of cancers. In this 2-year study, incidence of genetic fragments released by tumors into the bloodstream, known as ctDNA, was evaluated using CIRCULOGENE’s blood-based gene panel to evaluate overall results of ctDNA detection when performed at the time of endoscopy.

In the study, pancreatic, colorectal, gastric, esophageal, and biliary lesions were assessed in 231 patients when doctors determined a high suspicion for malignancy. When ctDNA analysis was sent at the time of endoscopy, the oncologist could use the results to aid decision making for first-line therapy. The study found that ctDNA was positive in 71% of pancreatic cancers and the large majority of other GI malignancies.

“Cancer touches everyone, and it is our team’s belief that people want the most actionable, personalized, and accurate health information possible in the shortest amount of time,” said Mike Mullen, President and CEO of CIRCULOGENE. “Dr. Grossman’s research demonstrates the importance of getting treatment to cancer patients faster which can be done with liquid biopsy testing for DNA, RNA, and MSI all of which CIRCULOGENE provides, in less than a week.”

Dr. Mathew Grossman is the Division Chief of Gastroenterology and Director of Advanced Endoscopy with the Atlantic Medical Group Gastroenterology at Morristown. With clinical interests in therapeutic endoscopy, he has been active in clinical trials of endoscopic devices as well as genomic research on pancreatic duct fluid genomics. Dr. Grossman has written numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, has presented at many national scientific meetings, and has given frequent talks throughout the GI community about the latest innovations in endoscopy.

About CIRCULOGENE

CIRCULOGENE provides comprehensive biomarker testing for a broad range of cancers allowing physicians to match patient results with specific therapies in just one week. Their sequencing and qPCR methods can provide a full genomic load analysis to help clinicians select targeted therapies, monitor efficacy, and assess recurrence for cancer patients. Applying their liquid biopsy for cfDNA and cfRNA, including PD-L1 and MSI detection, CIRCULOGENE can detect circulating germline and somatic mutations and RNA fusions.
