New Research Report — The Future of AI and Older Adults

Within five years, the industries serving older adults will have entered into the ‘Golden Age of AI’.

The current status and future potential are discussed in the new report The Future of AI and Older Adults from Aging and Health Technology Watch. The report is based on interviews with experts from 26 organizations across healthcare, senior living, and technology. AI technologies have exploded onto the market in multiple categories. As an aging population faces a dwindling care workforce, it is also emerging that can assist organizations that provide care and help older adults to maintain independence.

Over the next five years and beyond, the care industries will make more effective use of AI technologies. We will see expansion of Wi-Fi access in senior care, customer service, and remote monitoring. And increasingly, insurers and care providers will include the role of AI in the standard of home healthcare.

Researchers at multiple universities have also been ramping up AI and Aging initiatives funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Science Foundation. Multiple grants and awards totaling over $70 million are fueling projects in wearables, remote monitoring, health apps, voice biomarkers and more. Payment for AI-enabled services has also been tackled in 2022, targeting work done by machines.

More sensor-based applications for detecting motion and change have been emerging. Predictive analytics are now becoming meaningful in health and senior care for questions like how a community is performing or whether more care workers may be needed in specific circumstances. In the future, AI in the home is likely to become part of a ‘wellbeing’ infrastructure that is incorporated into new home design and home remodeling.

HOA and Condo Manager Association Management Group (AMG) Builds Hope for Greater Charlotte Area Pediatric Cancer Patient

It was a warm May day of lifting and laughter, hammers and hugs, screwdrivers and smiles. But the best part was the expression on Antonio’s face when he saw his new playscape, complete with signed best wishes from each member of the AMG construction team, said Paul Mengert, AMG founder and CEO.

Volunteers from Association Management Group (AMG), one of the Carolinas’ largest professional homeowner association managers representing more than 30,000 property owners, constructed a custom backyard playset on May 6 for four-year-old Antonio Culp of Rock Hill, SC, a pediatric cancer patient in treatment for ependymoma, a tumor that starts in the brain or spine. Culp is the recipient of the free playset thanks to AMG and Roc Solid Foundation (RSF), a Virginia-based nonprofit that works with hospitals, organizations, and volunteers to Play It Forward and build hope for children and families fighting pediatric cancer. The team of 20 AMG staff worked from 9:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with tools, instruction, and guidance from an RSF project leader to create the playscape, which featured swings, a tree house, a slide, and a climbing area. “I just want to thank all of you for everything,” said Printiss Crosby, Antonio’s mother. “Antonio’s always wanted a swing set, so it’s just a blessing that you came out and did this for him. Even though he’s battling this (cancer), he’s just a happy boy. I’m amazed.”

It takes a team effort to restore hope to young cancer patients, according to Roc Solid Foundation founder and chief play officer Eric Newman. “We are so grateful for the support of groups like AMG who partner with us to bring play to kids fighting cancer. We truly believe that play defeats cancer, because cancer will be the last thing on this family’s mind when they see their playset. In that moment, play has won.”

“In our industry of managing community homeowner and condominium associations, helping one’s neighbor–‘walking each other home’–is an important and uplifting responsibility. It’s satisfying and meaningful to help restore fun and play to the life of Antonio, a little boy going through cancer. We hope it brings him happiness, joy, and God’s blessing.” AMG President Dacy Cavicchia agreed. “Caring for our community is a key core value for us. We have a decades-old culture of giving back to the greater Charlotte area, both financially and as volunteers. According to Roc Solid foundation, sixteen thousand US children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Of course, therapy is important, but so is experiencing a happy, normal life. It was inspiring to spend the day creating a wonderful playspace this family can enjoy for years to come.”

Virginia Eye Care Network calls in Taylor Reach for Interim Management of Contact Center

“Patients just need an effective solution with as little time on the phone as possible. Making it easy for the patient and effective and efficient for the organization are two objectives on this project.” Colin Taylor, CEO, The Taylor Reach Group

A leading eye care network in Virginia has called in The Taylor Reach Group for support in managing and improving its contact center operations.

The network, with satellite offices across the state, is seeking to streamline its customer-facing contact and appointment booking processes, with better integration across the available service network, an area in which TRG has a strong reputation as an industry leader.

“Having worked with regional healthcare networks,” says Colin Taylor, CEO and Chief Chaos Officer of Taylor Reach, “our consulting team has the experience and resources needed to create and support a care network of this size.”

It goes beyond management, of course, as Taylor points out. “The key word here is ‘care,’ and when working with a booking and patient management system, making it easy for the patient is critical. Patients just need an effective solution with as little time on the phone as possible. Making it easy for the patient and effective and efficient for the organization are two objectives on this project.”

Because the vision network integrates a number of different surgical and non-surgical services across a wide geographic area and caters to the general public as well as specialized services like pediatrics, it’s imperative that the systems be in place to reduce the number of steps the patient needs to take, while also balancing this with a thorough review of the services available.

Streamlining and “fixing” a complex contact system takes time and starts with an operational review. In this process we review what is in place, from people, technologies and workflow processes. We determine what the customer needs, and then determine how those needs are best expressed by the network’s approach. Making operational changes while continuing to deliver services is akin to changing the tires while driving the car.

“Typically, our team steps in for an assessment and makes recommendations based on that assessment,” Taylor says. “In some instances, like this one, it makes more sense for us to take the reins for a period – cut out the ‘middleman,’ as it were – so we can make the necessary changes, such as acquiring new technology or implement training systems as quickly and effectively as possible. Then, when we have a working system in place, we’ll be positioned to hand the reins back to the network to operate on their own.”

Taylor Reach performs detailed strategic assessments for companies, NGO’s and governments across North America. Using a proprietary methodology combining benchmarking, best practice analysis, root cause analysis, and a deep understanding of People, Processes, Technology, and Methodology, Taylor Reach employs a holistic approach to contact center assessment that views the center in the context of the customer experience and the service delivery across traditional and digital channels. From there, recommendations can be made as to what gaps need to be addressed, and what steps can be taken to improve the operation and experience for both the customers and front-line staff.

Studies Weekly provides a wellness curriculum for Ukrainian children

Studies Weekly Ukraine Well-being curriculum

Example of a Ukrainian Grade 1 student edition of Studies Weekly’s Wellness curriculum

When I first saw the translated version, my eyes filled with tears because I know this project will have a huge impact.

An American curriculum company is providing wellness materials to all elementary children in Ukraine.

In August 2022, Studies Weekly, a Utah elementary curriculum publisher, partnered with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to bring Studies Weekly’s elementary-level social-emotional well-being program to Ukrainian students in an effort to help them thrive in their war-torn world.

“It has long been my dream to find ways to support students in other countries with our curriculum. Ukraine is certainly in need, and I am grateful we were able to facilitate this partnership,” said Ed Rickers, owner and president of Studies Weekly.

For the translation, Studies Weekly connected with Utah-based translation provider, Transcend Translation. Volunteers from both Utah companies worked together to provide Studies Weekly’s research-based curriculum to Ukrainian children, without creating any financial obligations for the Ukrainian government at a time when all their resources have been diverted elsewhere.

“Our awareness of the challenges in Ukraine are heightened all the more because a member of our marketing team, Anton Piddubnyi, lived there during the Russian invasion and was forced to flee. While monitoring Anton’s situation, we realized we could help Ukrainian children by donating our Well-Being curriculum for these students,” said John McCurdy, Studies Weekly CEO.

After Ukrainian Catholic University did an in-depth analysis of the publications and gave the content a glowing review, Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science approved the commencement of the project.

Transcend Translation’s team worked through Fall 2022 and spent 151 hours translating and adapting the Well-Being materials for Ukrainian students.

“Having personally served in two deployments to Iraq, I saw closely how war negatively impacts kids and their education. Being able to provide Ukrainian educational materials in their language to help them overcome those negative impacts was an easy decision and well worth our time, effort, and the money we donated,” said Cyle Adair, founder and CEO of Transcend.

This curriculum will be available online to 6.5 million students and 360,000 educators in Ukraine, regardless of their current location.

The country plans to fully implement Studies Weekly’s curriculum in early 2024, according to Valerii Hauf, project manager, under the direction of the office of First Lady Olena Zelenska. Project managers at the Ukraine Ministry and local educators spent the first part of 2023 adapting and certifying the materials. Next steps include training education coaches and teachers and piloting best global practices in the educational process.

“When Studies Weekly mentioned the opportunity to help kids in Ukraine, we knew it would make a great impact in a war-torn country, and we were happy to partner with them in this endeavor. We’ve worked with Studies Weekly on many translation projects. We know they are a great company and know their products really affect young people who are the future,” Adair added.

After almost a year of work, the Studies Weekly team is excited things are moving forward.

“When I first saw the translated version, my eyes filled with tears because I know this project will have a huge impact,” Piddubnyi said. “I witnessed the struggles that children go through in Ukraine and saw the need to support their emotional health in these difficult times. I am so glad that our Studies Weekly team could make this happen.”

CIRCULOGENE’s liquid biopsy for PD-L1 status features in research presented at the recent AACR annual meeting

CIRCULOGENE logo

“It’s exciting to give patients a second prospect to identify PD-L1, other than tissue alone, providing a better chance to uncover the gene alteration,” said Dr. Hart. “And it’s exciting to help patients benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitors who previously might not have had the opportunity.”

CIRCULOGENE is an innovative diagnostic company transforming precision medicine through the rapid delivery of actionable results. New research presented by Dr. Lowell Hart at the April 14-19 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida relied upon use of CIRCULOGENE’s technology to identify biomarkers which indicate the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) therapy.

The research poster, entitled “Liquid biopsy for PD-L1 status by analysis of cfRNA in pan-cancer cohort: Preliminary clinical data from a large community practice” was presented and lead authored by Lowell L. Hart MD FACP, Clinical Researcher from Florida Cancer Specialists and Associate Professor of Hematology and Oncology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The poster was coauthored by Dr. Magali Van den Bergh and Stacey Garafalo, also from Florida Cancer Specialists, and Dr. Paul Walker, Chief Medical Officer for CIRCULOGENE.

For this study, Dr. Hart and his team collected data from over 400 patients over a 2-year period to validate the ability to detect PD-L1 positive using liquid biopsy testing. Liquid biopsy afforded patients a second opportunity for PD-L1 detection, rather than tissue alone, or provided the only opportunity for patients to benefit from ICI when tissue samples were unavailable. The use of liquid biopsy could improve patient selection for ICI therapy and help clinicians to avoid unnecessary treatment-related toxicity in patients.

Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), a protein over-represented on the surface of cancer cells, inhibits T cell response and enables cancer cells to evade the immune system. ICI therapies are designed to enhance the immune system’s ability to recognize and attack cancer cells. Since clinical evidence suggests that patients with higher PD-L1 levels are more likely to respond to ICI therapy than those with lower levels, PD-L1 testing using immunohistochemistry has become a widely used tool to predict ICI therapy response.

Unfortunately, tissue samples are not always practical or effective. Liquid biopsies offer a less invasive approach to sampling tumor biology and a more accurate way to assess potential therapeutic response. CIRCULOGENE’s technology, which was used in this study, provides the successful recovery of 97% of available DNA and RNA from blood-based samples.

CIRCULOGENE tests the plasma mRNA PD-L1 which translates the PD-L1 protein, thus focusing on the genomic makeup of a cancer. Plus, since multiple areas of a tumor can be tested compared to a single tissue biopsy, CIRCULOGENE’s liquid biopsy testing can better account for the heterogeneity of cancer tissue, and a more comprehensive picture of a tumor’s genetic makeup and PD-L1 expression can be obtained.

“The data demonstrates that liquid PD-L1 RNA expression is as clinically beneficial as tissue PD-L1,” said Dr. Paul Walker, Chief Medical Officer of CIRCULOGENE. “Plasma PD-L1 has significant clinical utility guiding immunotherapy treatment.”

In Dr. Hart’s study, patients found with elevated cfRNA for PD-L1 based on the CIRCULOGENE liquid biopsy, received either standard of care therapy or ICI therapy following their oncologists’ recommendations. Some patients were directly benefited by the ability of blood-based testing to inform treatment plans. Additionally, in some cases, CIRCULOGENE’s test results provided opportunities for drug replacement for patients, opportunities that would not have been afforded had liquid biopsy testing been unavailable.

Liquid biopsy can deliver faster results than evaluating traditional tissue samples and can provide a viable alternative in cases where tissue samples are not obtainable, such as for breast cancer patients with years of hormone therapy.

About CIRCULOGENE

CIRCULOGENE provides comprehensive biomarker testing for a broad range of cancers allowing physicians to match patient results with specific therapies in just one week. Their sequencing and qPCR methods can provide a full genomic load analysis to help clinicians select targeted therapies, monitor efficacy, and assess recurrence for cancer patients. Applying their liquid biopsy for cfDNA and cfRNA, including PD-L1 and MSI detection, CIRCULOGENE can detect circulating germline and somatic mutations and RNA fusions.

CIRCULOGENE is a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) certified laboratory and a Verified Vendor for the federal System for Award Management. Naturopathic physicians are trained as medical specialists in lifestyle, behavioral, and preventive medicine, making them the ideal physicians to help Americans live healthier lives.

Naturopathic Medicine Week, an annual event held to promote the benefits of naturopathic medicine, is set to take place from May 14 to May 20, 2023. The week-long event aims to showcase the value of naturopathic medicine to patients, prospective patients, public policy makers, reporters, and community leaders through various creative activities, events, and messages.

The origins of Naturopathic Medicine Week date back to 2013 when the US Senate unanimously passed S. Res. 221, creating the first-ever U.S. Naturopathic Medicine Week. The resolution recognizes the value of naturopathic medicine in providing “safe, effective, and affordable health care…” and encourages Americans to learn about the role of naturopathic doctors (NDs) in preventing chronic and debilitating conditions.

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional modalities, and encompasses a range of therapies, including botanical and herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, lifestyle counseling, naturopathic physical manipulation, and much more.

As AANP Executive Director Laura Farr emphasizes, “Naturopathic physicians are trained as medical specialists in lifestyle, behavioral, and preventive medicine, making them the ideal physicians to help Americans live healthier lives. Join us in celebrating the healing power of nature and a whole-person, patient-centered approach to health!”

Recent celebrations have seen Naturopathic Medicine Week moved from October to May to align with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) and amplify the messages of the week. The AANP collaborated with the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) to come up with this year’s theme and messaging in the United States: “Naturopathic Medicine: Rooted in Whole Person Health.”

The AANP encourages everyone to participate in Naturopathic Medicine Week 2023 and learn more about the benefits of naturopathic medicine. To find a licensed naturopathic doctor near you, visit https://bit.ly/FindAnND.

For more information on Naturopathic Medicine Week and to find events near you, visit the AANP website.

About the AANP:

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) is the professional association that represents licensed naturopathic physicians. The AANP strives to make naturopathic medicine available to every American and to increase recognition of naturopathic physicians as the identified authorities on natural medicine. Expanded Studio and Premium King accommodations offer more room, a view of the mountains or garden, and a small kitchenette area. Finely appointed spacious suites offer views of the Front Range, the Rose Garden, and the Anschutz Campus, some featuring gas fireplaces and balconies.

The Common Good

The Common Good, The Benson’s 100-seat restaurant, serves a menu of freshly prepared cuisine created by Executive Chef Donovan Davis, a Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts veteran. With wall-to-wall windows in the dining room and a wraparound outdoor terrace for alfresco dining, it promises to serve as a community gathering space, featuring seasonally-driven comfort food using locally-sourced ingredients.

The meeting spaces include an elegant 3,800-square-foot ballroom on the hotel’s second floor, accommodating up to 250 guests. It features abundant natural light and two massive marble fireplaces. There will also be seven windowed boardrooms, while the 4,000-square-foot Rose Garden will host weddings and other outdoor events.

The Art Collection of The Benson Hotel & Faculty Club

Visitors to The Benson Hotel & Faculty Club will experience a premier Western art collection featuring over 100 original new works by a selection of contemporary Colorado artists led by William Matthews.

The new collection is evocative of the living West, showcasing myriad facets of light and season, agriculture and nature, and the human condition. Each painting, photograph, sculpture, mural, and mosaic was commissioned for a specific location in the hotel. The works explore unique themes while working together to reveal the expansive Colorado landscape.

Experienced in the hotel’s public spaces, guest rooms, and suites, the collection highlights the land and its people from varying perspectives. The Benson Collection is curated by Matthews and long-time art curator John Grant. The Colorado artists featured in the collection are represented in top galleries and museums throughout North America.

The Faculty Club at The Benson Hotel

The Faculty Club will serve as an off-campus, private environment for Aurora’s leaders, influencers, and the Anschutz medical community to gather socially. The members-only space provides a discrete setting with indoor seating, intimate conference rooms, and a full-service bar. Members will have priority access to the services offered at The Benson Hotel.

The Benson Hotel is named for Bruce Davey Benson, the longest-tenured president of the University of Colorado (CU) system, from March 2008 to July 1, 2019. Olympia Hotel Management will operate the hotel, which was developed by the Denver-based Aimco.

The Benson Hotel & Faculty Club is the central gathering place for the burgeoning University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and the Fitzsimmons Innovation Community, proximate to all Aurora offers and just 15 minutes from Denver International Airport and half an hour to downtown Denver.
