“This ClearAngel funding reflects our commitment to democratizing capital for women-owned brands.” – Andrew D’Souza, CEO and co-founder, Clearco.

Clearco, the world’s largest e-commerce investor and the company revolutionizing the way founders grow their businesses, today announced that its ClearAngel program is funding Lift&Conquer, a woman-owned provider of durable, affordable fitness accessories. ClearAngel provides early-stage founders with access to revenue share capital, data-driven advice, and Clearco’s extensive network of apps, agencies, and investors.

Founded in March 2019 by fitness enthusiast Laurén Fabello, Lift&Conquer came to fruition after Laurén overcame numerous financial and institutional obstacles. The brand aims to uplift consumers by reminding them that obstacles can be conquered. After successfully taking a spot in the direct-to-consumer market, ClearAngel’s funding will help expand Lift&Conquer’s wholesale opportunities and increase capital for product expansion.

ClearAngel is a new, equity-free, flexible capital option for early-stage founders who don’t have the network or mentorship to raise an angel round or join exclusive accelerators. The program has already funded over 350 companies since its February 2021 launch.

“The world is more focused on health than ever. We’re proud to support Lift&Conquer and help uplift consumers with affordable yet high-quality fitness accessories,” said Andrew D’Souza, CEO and co-founder, Clearco. “This ClearAngel funding reflects our commitment to democratizing capital for women-owned brands.”

In addition to $10,000 of flexible capital, Lift&Conquer will also get access to a network of over 500 investors, growth teams, agencies, apps, lawyers, and buyers; as well as data-driven advice designed to help scale and hit new revenue milestones. ClearAngel’s backing will allow Lift&Conquer to reach new revenue milestones as well as expand its product offering to include yoga mats, gym bags, and more.

“ClearAngel’s support is crucial to our journey in providing high quality fitness products that are part of an everyday mindset,” said Lift&Conquer founder Laurén Fabello. “With this backing, we will continue to uplift inspirational women who overcome hurdles daily.”

Shoreline Biome Issued Patent for Cell Lysis and Preparation of High Molecular Weight DNA from Modified Cells

News Image

Shoreline Biome, a microbiome research company that develops tools for characterizing microbiome populations down to the strain level, was recently awarded a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for “Methods for Cell Lysis and Preparation of High Molecular Weight DNA from Modified Cells.”

U.S. Patent 11,149,246 B2 was awarded on October 19, 2021.

The patent outlines the method and materials for the lysis of modified eukaryotic cells. This method, which is used in the Shoreline Biome Rapid Prep Kits, provides researchers with a set of reagents to quickly and inexpensively generate high molecular weight single-stranded DNA ideal for the generation of long PCR fragments. The process is ideal for screening modified cells by a technique such as CRISPR to identify cells that have been successfully modified.

This patent builds upon Shoreline Biome’s intellectual property protection and expands its utility beyond bacteria.

“The rapid lysis method works so well for our microbiome customers that we wanted to extend the utility of our kits and methods to other areas of science where there are large sets of modified cells that need to be screened,” said Mark Driscoll, Ph.D., Shoreline Biome’s Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer. “An additional benefit of the method in this patent is that it works well with a small number of input cells. This makes it ideal for screening purposes because the low number of input cells means the clones can be grown with fewer rounds, which translates into a quicker turnaround time and lower cost.”

The lysis is performed on standard laboratory equipment (i.e., a thermal cycler) and is completed in a few minutes. Shoreline Biome sells the reagents used in this method in 16-well and 96-well plate formats.

PrognoCIS Partners with PayPal and Braintree for Seamless Online Payment

PrognoCIS’s integration with Braintree offers clients full functionality of processing online payments, this is another successful stride towards enhancing patient engagement and impacting practice productivity said Vinay Deshpande, CEO and Co-Founder, Bizmatics Inc (now a Harris Company).

Bizmatics, the makers of PrognoCIS EHR, recently announced their partnership with Braintree and PayPal to provide convenient, functional payment tools that integrate seamlessly with the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Braintree, a payment gateway company provides online payment solutions for eCommerce companies. Their tools integrate with PrognoCIS to allow you to accept and process credit cards, PayPal, and digital wallets, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Venmo (available in the US).

Users can access this feature through the PrognoCIS web application available through the EMR/Billing Module. By adding this payment platform to their existing tools like patient portal, employer portal and telehealth, PrognoCIS enhances patient service and streamlines the billing process for a medical practice.

The solution is simple and provides ease of use in collecting and making payments. The clinical staff can use a copay screen to collect the copay, visit fee or outstanding payments from the patient using their credit card. The front office staff can create a patient receipt, which can be posted to the patient’s account.

The Patient Portal allows patients to view their balance and make payment using their credit card or PayPal account. This process creates a patient receipt which is integrated into the PrognoCIS billing module.

The new Braintree integration supports several types of credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, JCB, Maestro, Diner’s Club, and American Express. With more options for payment, practices and clinics can offer convenient solutions that promote improved revenue models.

Pelican Hooked and Snared in Fishing Line Rescued and Recovering at Oakland Zoo Veterinary Hospital

Oakland Zoo was alerted of the injured pelican who was suffering from a fishhook wound

Untold numbers of birds, turtles and other wildlife are affected by this solvable issue. Proper disposal of fishing line is crucial, and every citizen can help by picking up any fishing items found in nature

On October 27th, Oakland Zoo received and responded to a call from distressed citizens visiting Lake Merritt, reporting a pelican suffering from a large fishhook lodged into its throat as well as fishing line encircling its neck and bill. The improperly disposed of fishing gear had been preventing the animal from being able to eat or drink for weeks.

Using two kayaks and a small motorboat to reach and then capture the pelican, Oakland Zoo’s VP of Animal Care, Colleen Kinzley, and Zoological Managers Ann Marie Bisagno and Andrea Dougall, then transported the bird to Oakland Zoo’s Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

Upon arrival at the Zoo, veterinary staff examined the bird, administered fluids, conducted a blood draw, and examined the injured area on the neck. From initial observations, the veterinary staff determined the pelican suffered from dehydration, starvation, and based on the bloodwork appeared to have possible anemia.

After examinations, Dr. Alex Herman, VP of Veterinary Service sat Oakland Zoo removed the one-inch barbed fishing hook from the pelican’s neck.

The pelican has now been aptly nicknamed ‘Merritt’ by Oakland Zoo staff.

Veterinary staff have successfully fed Merritt smelt and capelin fish, which is a hopeful sign of recovery. For now, Merritt will remain at Oakland Zoo’s Veterinary Hospital for ongoing wound treatment and recovery.

Many coastal birds and other marine life are injured or killed each year by cut and discarded fishing lines, associated hooks, and tackle.

“Untold numbers of birds, turtles and other wildlife are affected by this solvable issue. Proper disposal of fishing line is crucial, and every citizen can help by picking up any fishing items found in nature”, says Amy Gotliffe, Vice President of Conservation at Oakland Zoo.

These items are improperly disposed of on beaches or from fishing boats. The wildlife either becomes entangled in the fishing lines or experiences debilitating injuries. Between 2002 and 2015, a study by the Audubon Society reports that California-based International Bird Rescue treated at least 2,957 birds for injuries caused by fishing gear.

Oakland Zoo urges guests and the public to join them in Taking Action for Wildlife by changing fishing habits to help save birds and other marine life like ‘Merritt’ the pelican.

When fishing, never leave behind lures, hooks, fishing lines, or bait. Dispose of any gear properly in box or similar enclosed receptacle within designated disposal areas or at home.

Oakland Zoo is normally contacted by wildlife organizations to rescue animals. This is a rare occurrence for the Zoo to answer a public call. If you encounter injured wildlife, please call your local animal control center.

Westchester Resident and RMA of Connecticut Fertility Specialist, Dr. Ilana Ressler to Spearhead 6th Annual Local Pies for Prevention Program Leading Up to Thanksgiving

Dr. Ilana Ressler with her freshly baked Pies for Prevention in 2020.

“I’m honored to once again be involved in the Pies for Prevention program through Sharsheret, a wonderful non-profit organization that supports young women and their families with breast and ovarian cancer,“ says Dr. Ilana Ressler, a reproductive endocrinologist with RMA of Connecticut.

For the sixth year in a row, local New Rochelle resident and board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist from RMA of Connecticut, Dr. Ilana Ressler, will spearhead Pies for Prevention, a charitable program to help promote ovarian cancer awareness. All proceeds from the sale of the pies will benefit Sharsheret, the nonprofit organization that supports young women, men, and their families facing breast and ovarian cancer.

This year marks the 13th annual Sharsheret Thanksgiving Bake Sale, where pies are baked within the community right before Thanksgiving and then distributed to those who have purchased them just in time for the holidays. Pies for Prevention is a program started in 2008 by two sisters, Adeena Sussman and Sharon Wieder, who lost both their mother and grandmother to ovarian cancer. To honor the memories of both women, the sisters decided to memorialize their mother’s and grandmother’s love of baking while raising money for a great cause.

Dr. Ressler, who oversees RMA of Connecticut’s new Harrison office, launched the program in Westchester six years ago, after she was driven to get involved as she continued to meet women faced with breast and ovarian cancer through her job as a reproductive endocrinologist at RMA of Connecticut.

“We love baking our delicious homemade pies while creating awareness for a good cause. While we do have strict COVID-19 protocols in place, we encourage anyone who is uncomfortable with receiving baked goods this year to make a donation to Sharsheret to support this fantastic organization.”

Homemade pies are $25 and available for order directly on the Sharsheret website. Available flavors include pumpkin, pecan, and their best-selling chocolate chip cookie dough pie, as well as a pumpkin cranberry bread. Gluten-free peanut butter blondies are also available. All ingredients are certified Kosher and Pareve. The deadline to order pies is November 17, 2021.
