Decline in Cardiovascular Health Screenings During COVID-19 Pandemic Poses New Public Health Threat

“In the absence of prevention efforts, including repeated calls to at-risk populations to visit the doctor and get important health screenings, we are on the brink of a public health challenge, worsening patient outcomes, and additional healthcare costs.” – William Smith

Public Health Officials Must Refocus Efforts on Preventive Care & Screenings for Deadliest Threats Among Vulnerable Communities

Pioneer Institute today released a new analysis focused on cardiovascular disease, An “Impending Tsunami” in Mortality from Traditional Diseases?, that examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has created another unrelated public health crisis. The Pioneer analysis examines how a single-minded public health focus on COVID-19, social distancing, and lockdowns drove reductions in screenings, diagnoses, and early treatment for complex conditions such as heart disease. In the study, author and Pioneer Institute Visiting Fellow in Life Sciences Dr. William Smith concludes that public health authorities, policymakers, and the media should turn their focus from COVID-19 to efforts to address and prevent more serious public health challenges looming on the horizon.

“There have been regular admonitions to practice social distancing and wear a mask during the pandemic to protect our health and the health of those we know,” said William Smith, author of An ‘Impending Tsunami’ in Mortality from Traditional Diseases. “But during that time, public health officials have ignored the need to make repeated calls to at-risk populations to visit the doctor and get important health screenings. In the absence of these important prevention efforts, we are on the brink of a public health challenge, worsening patient outcomes, and additional healthcare costs.”

In the new analysis, Pioneer finds that:

  • There were over 375,000 deaths from COVID-19 in 2020, compared to 691,000 from heart disease and more than 600,000 from cancer. For both of these preventable and treatable diseases, earlier treatment leads to better patient outcomes.
  • Compared to 2018 and 2019, primary care visits were down 21.4 percent during the second quarter of 2020, despite a surge in telemedicine, which accounted for 2 percent of visits in 2019, but 35 percent from April through June of 2020. The problem is even more severe among African-American, Asian and Hispanic patients, who are more likely to meet with their primary care physician remotely.
  • Cholesterol screenings were down more than 35 percent during the pandemic. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), there was a 9.1 percent drop in prescriptions filled for Atorvastatin, the leading cholesterol drug that is the most dispensed drug in the U.S., which translates to nearly 11 million prescriptions for the drug being dispensed.

Dr. Smith makes several recommendations to address this dangerous lack of preventive and early care, including:

  • A public health campaign about the dangers of not getting screened for the leading causes of death in the U.S. and the urgency for people to see their physician. The campaign should have its highest visibility in communities of color as African-Americans have the highest death rates for heart disease and cancer, and communities of color also have far lower diagnosis rates for cardiovascular and other diseases.
  • Public officials should borrow tactics used to distribute free COVID-19 vaccines by offering free diagnostic tests at large venues.
  • Policy makers should reduce or eliminate access restrictions to vaccines, therapeutics and prescriptions. Policy makers and health plans should consider waiving co-pays and co-insurance on therapies for the two leading causes of death for a year.
  • The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) should submit recommendations on how to mitigate public health damage that may have occurred from the precipitous drop in health screenings.

Goliath Technologies Announces Enhancements to Goliath Performance Monitor

“This release could not come at a better time. IT Pros are battling to quickly troubleshoot issues and ensure a positive end-user experience with the continued trend of “Work From Anywhere” and the shortage of Citrix experts.”

Goliath Technologies, a leader in end-user experience monitoring and troubleshooting software for hybrid cloud environments, announced today the release of Goliath Performance Monitor 11.9.2. New features include a Citrix NetScaler Module and industry-only VMware Horizon End-User Experience Scorecard.

The new Citrix NetScaler Module adds enhanced monitoring intelligence for Citrix NetScaler (a.k.a. ADC or Application Delivery Controller), expanding the scope of Goliath’s proactive end-user experience monitoring and troubleshooting software. The module enables automatic scanning and identification of performance issues, faults, and errors taking place on the NetScaler.

Critical data is gathered and displayed in monitoring dashboards and troubleshooting views through Goliath’s intelligent Automatic Citrix Discovery and Dependency Map, enabling IT administrators to conduct contextual analysis. This functionality expedites root cause analysis and identification of performance issues in the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environment. In addition, proactive alerting based on corporate or industry standards can be set to notify IT admins in advance of issues.

“The 11.9.2 release expands on Goliath’s embedded Citrix intelligence and automation, proactively alerting IT admins on NetScaler issues that could impact user experience,” notes Ted Rainey, Senior Director of Product Management at Goliath. “Given the critical Secure Access Gateway role that NetScaler ADC provides in enabling remote access to Citrix environments, this release could not come at a better time. IT Pros are battling to quickly troubleshoot issues and ensure a positive end-user experience with the continued trend of “Work From Anywhere” and the shortage of Citrix experts.”

“NetScaler is the most critical part of any Citrix deployment,” noted Brian Diamond, CEO of LANStatus, a Citrix Platinum partner and Goliath service partner. “Goliath’s unique dependency mapping capability provides much needed visibility into the performance of this component of an end-user computing infrastructure.”

The release also includes enhanced user experience analytics for enterprises utilizing VMware Horizon, such as an industry-only End-User Experience Scorecard. This new feature enables IT decisionmakers to objectively view the quality of end-user experience, instead of relying on subjective feedback or point-in-time surveys. This allows IT teams to report on end-user experience metrics with definitive proof and how they compare to industry best practices.

As Goliath continues to optimize the unified view of end-user experience data across any hybrid landscape using Citrix or VMware delivery systems, IT is well positioned to proactively ensure a trouble-free digital computing experience for remote and mobile workforces, regardless of where the users or workloads are located.

American Gene Technologies Passes Major Milestone in Potential HIV Cure Clinical Trial with Third Patient Showing No Serious Adverse Effects (SAEs)

News Image

With no serious adverse effects observed in the third participant, we’re seeing a verifiable trend in the data that gives reasonable confidence that the treatment has low risk of adverse events. -AGT CEO Jeff Galvin

American Gene Technologies (AGT), a clinical-stage biotechnology company, announced that the independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB) overseeing the trial of AGT’s HIV gene therapy found no serious adverse events (SAEs) from the treatment for the third patient and voted unanimously to allow AGT’s HIV cure program to continue at a faster pace, eliminating the requirement of DSMB reviews between each participant and moving to quarterly DSMB safety meetings. AGT and trial sites will monitor participants for any adverse events and report them to the DSMB, however, the pace of enrollment and treatment can be increased.

“This is a very exciting moment in our trial,” said AGT CEO Jeff Galvin. “With no serious adverse effects observed in the third participant, we’re seeing a verifiable trend in the data that gives reasonable confidence that the treatment has low risk of adverse events. Once three more participants are treated in November and December, we can start studying efficacy data. We expect to see objective markers from studies of treated participants’ blood tests by the end of the year, and hopefully will have a functionally cured patient by next summer.”

Designated as the RePAIR trial (Restore Potent Antiviral Immune Responses, NCT04561258), participants receive a single infusion of their own HIV-specific CD4 T cells after those cells were enriched and genetically modified to resist infection. Without any observed negative or adverse events, the DSMB has allowed the trial to continue without adjustments or delays.

Phase 1 Trial Status

  • Overview: AGT’s first-in-human study for AGT103-T is currently underway at trial sites in the Maryland / Washington, D.C. area. The Phase 1 trial is the company’s first step in clinical testing of cell and gene therapies for HIV, cancer, and rare diseases. Enrollment, product manufacturing and treatments are ongoing at AGT’s clinical trial sites. The recruitment status of the Phase 1 RePAIR clinical trial along with information on the trial sites can be found on the official ClinicalTrials.gov website.
  • Focus: The primary endpoint is safety; testing related to secondary endpoints evaluates responses to treatment including changes in the immune response to HIV.
  • Participant Criteria: Participants range in age from 18 to 60 and include males and females. Participants have been diagnosed with HIV for at least three years and must have taken HIV antiretroviral medication for more than two years prior to enrollment. Participants cannot be pregnant and must be available to attend 17 study visits over a 10-month period. Anticipated completion of treatments in the Phase 1 study is Q2 2022, although final data and long-term monitoring will continue. The Phase 1 study will include from 15 to 18 participants.
  • Timeframe: Participants treated with AGT103-T are followed for 6 months in this safety study before enrolling in an FDA-mandated, 15-year, long-term follow up (required for all gene therapy trials). The first infusion occurred in May 2021, the second in August 2021, and the third in September 2021.

About HIV

According to UNAIDS, approximately 37.7 million people worldwide live with HIV/AIDS. In the United States, government statistics show 1.2 million people have HIV and estimate that 34,800 Americans were newly infected with HIV in 2019. Across the globe, UNAIDS estimates that approximately 1.5 million individuals were newly infected with HIV in 2020. The Washington D.C./Baltimore area is often cited as a ‘hot spot’ for HIV, with Washington, D.C., having the highest rate of infection at nearly 46 cases per 100,000 population and Baltimore City having rates of 17 cases per 100,000. Maryland also ranks sixth among U.S. states and territories in HIV diagnosis rates, with more than 900 new cases in 2019 alone, according to the Maryland Department of Health.

Since the late 1980s, antiretroviral drugs have restored quality of life to persons living with HIV and, in some cases, have even been used to prevent new infections. However, no approved treatment has demonstrated the ability to cure HIV. AGT is committed to addressing this unmet medical need.

About AGT103-T

AGT103-T is a genetically modified cell product made from a person’s own cells. AGT’s unique approach focuses on permanently repairing the key immune system damage caused by HIV. AGT’s goal is to develop a cell and gene therapy capable of repairing the immune system so it will provide natural control over HIV replication.

About American Gene Technologies

AGT is a gene and cell therapy company with a proprietary gene-delivery platform for rapid development of cell and gene therapies to cure infectious diseases, cancers, and inherited disorders. AGT’s mission is to transform people’s lives through genetic medicines that rid the body of disease. AGT has been granted four patents for the technology used to make AGT103-T and 11 patents for its unique immuno-oncology approach to stimulate gamma-delta (γδ) T cells to destroy a variety of solid tumors. The company has developed a synthetic gene for treating Phenylketonuria (PKU), a debilitating inherited disease. AGT’s treatment for PKU has been granted Orphan Drug Designation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and it is expected to reach the clinic in 2022.

Meet Bouncy! Captivating Animatronic Service Dog From Ripple Effects Helps Young Learners Build Coping Skills in Stressful, Uncertain Situations

Meet Bouncy! Captivating Animatronic Service Dog From Ripple Effects Helps Young Learners Build Coping Skills in Stressful, Uncertain Situations

Teach your students that Bouncy belongs to them and that they belong to Bouncy, How students relate to Bouncy is important, which is why we treat him as a member of our classroom.

Like so many educators in 2020, early childhood special education teacher Anita Compart of the Des Plaines School District (Ill.) realized she needed new ways to engage her early learners and give them tools to cope with a stressful, constantly evolving situation – both in the classroom and during remote learning.

Compart turned to Bouncy, Ripple Effects’ captivating, breathing animatronic service dog that anchors a social-emotional learning (SEL) program that helps young children feel safe and learn how to self-calm when stressed. A multi-breed, smaller-than-average dog with a prosthetic, Bouncy signifies both vulnerability and strength. Bouncy offers three supports mental health experts agree young children need to thrive despite stressors: a sense of feeling safe, emotional attachment and training in specific SEL competencies linked to self-regulation and agency, particularly controlled breathing and positive self-talk.

Pilot testing of Bouncy in school districts, such as Des Plaines, demonstrated immediate short-term behavioral benefits consistent with this research, including fewer and less intense tantrums, aggressive incidents and anxiety episodes.

When children hold Bouncy heart-to-heart and belly-to-belly, their breathing automatically slows to match his, and his encouraging words remind them they have the power to be calm and strong.

A few weeks prior to the pandemic, Compart began to incorporate Bouncy into her SEL curriculum, using him each day during circle times and play-based activities, such as singing and dancing. Compart and her students practiced self-calm breathing techniques by using Bouncy’s signature “Breathing Out and Breathing In” music video. In addition, she encouraged students to take care of Bouncy by brushing his fur and “feeding” him. To further integrate Bouncy into daily lessons, the speech pathologist in Compart’s district relied on him to help teach other subjects, such as math and language arts. Once learning went remote for her district during the pandemic, Compart created a virtual classroom complete with a Bouncy bitmoji.

“Teach your students that Bouncy belongs to them and that they belong to Bouncy,” she said. “How students relate to Bouncy is important, which is why we treat him as a member of our classroom. If I have a student in need of emotional support, they can spend individual time with him to self-calm, allowing me to keep my focus on teaching the rest of the class without disruption. When my students need him, Bouncy is already there to engage with them and meet them at their level.”

For more than 35 years, Ripple Effects co-founder and Bouncy creator, Alice Ray, has been a trailblazer in the SEL space, from development of the conceptual framework for instructor-based training in the Second Step program to leveraging technology to address implementation barriers in Ripple Effects learner-directed programs.

Ray said, “Living with my husband’s service dog inspired me to try to replicate that experience with a breathing, singing, coaching, loving, realistic, helper dog for young kids. We built the vulnerability that so many of children feel into this physical figure of wisdom and strength.”

She continued, “Our timing for introducing Bouncy was serendipitous. As young learners continue to grapple with the impact of COVID-19 disruptions on school and their lives, he provides them with the support they need to cope with stress and stay calm.”

Bouncy’s SEL program includes a full teacher kit with books, apps, activities and music videos plus a school-to-home connection package to help young students develop self-regulation skills and build confidence. Bouncy focuses on empowering students to develop their own skills and strategies for controlling anxiety and acting out, within a context of unconditional acceptance and belonging. Bouncy and his diverse digital buddies reinforce feelings of community, foster an appreciation of diversity, challenge stereotypes around disabilities and provide personalized supports, similar to live helper dogs at a much lower cost and with fewer health and safety issues.

M2 Orthopedics Secures Funding to Accelerate Modern Practice Management for Top Surgeons

News Image

By supporting top surgeons with financial and management strategies, physicians are able to concentrate on what they do best, while also ensuring they have the operational structure that enables their practices to succeed and grow.

Today, M2 Orthopedics (M2O), innovator of modern practice management for the nation’s best orthopedic surgeons, is announcing it has secured significant funding to broaden its ability to support orthopedic practices. The financing, led by private equity sponsor Archimedes Health Investors, with participation from Heritage Medical Systems and The Firmament Group, enabled M2O’s recent acquisition of Virginia-based Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic, a leader in comprehensive orthopedic services, as well as Harborside Surgery Center, a premier facility for orthopedic surgeries.

“We are committed to an innovative practice management approach that focuses on serving as a trusted partner to physicians, so that they can excel as practice leaders and doctors,” said Marshall Maran, co-founder and CEO of M2O. “By supporting top surgeons with financial and management strategies, physicians are able to concentrate on what they do best, while also ensuring they have the operational structure that enables their practices to succeed and grow.”

According to the American Medical Association’s Physician Practice Benchmark Survey, 2020 was the first year in which less than half of patient care physicians worked in a private practice, a drop of almost 5 percent from 2018, continuing the shift away from small, independent practices. M2O is investing in the field’s leading orthopedists and empowering doctors to increase focus on patient care and to take control of their future through access to capital, back-office support and professional corporate management.

“Our primary objective has been to provide high quality care to our patients. In addition, our practice has been deeply involved in training young surgeons through our fellowship program and in clinical research, all of which further the development and knowledge of the field of orthopedics”, said C. Anderson Engh, Jr. MD of Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic. “Through our partnership with M2O, we are able to continue our focus on these three critical aspects of our practice, while having the resources and capabilities to develop and grow, which are critical in today’s environment.”

Traveling Safely Post-Pandemic— InternationalLiving.com

Placencia Belize

“Find a list of specific requirements at your destination country’s U.S. Embassy website. If you are traveling to more than one country or region, you will need to meet the requirements for each location.”

“Pre-COVID, all you needed was a passport,” says Shane McCarthy D.O., “Nowadays, the list is much longer—and different for each destination.”

“Conditions for tourist entry are country specific and may include: Proof of vaccination status; documented negative COVID test within a certain timeframe prior to arrival; certification of international medical insurance coverage— which may need to specify trip dates, set dollar amounts (e.g., coverage up to U.S. $50,000), and other funding minimums to cover medical costs, food, and housing in case of quarantine; health forms and attestations; and self-quarantine and/or retesting after arrival.”

“Find a list of specific requirements at your destination country’s U.S. Embassy website. If you are traveling to more than one country or region, you will need to meet the requirements for each location.”

The report offers advice on travelling on public transportation, what to expect when flying and answers questions on enjoying a cruise.

With so many more considerations and requirements for post-pandemic travel, in the report, McCarthy provides detailed to-do lists of what one should do before travelling. She says:

Pre-Travel Checklist

  • Get Vaccinated with an FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine. Keep proof of your vaccine—make copies of the card or take a picture. If you live in a state that logs your vaccines electronically or has vaccine passports, keep the link and/or download the app.
  • List COVID-specific requirements for your destination. Which documents do you need to present upon arrival? Pre-travel COVID test results? Proof of vaccination? Anything else? Be sure to check requirements for each leg of your trip, as they can vary.
  • List COVID-specific requirements for returning home. Do you need proof of a negative COVID test prior to boarding your plane back to the U.S.? Check CDC and State Department websites for the most up-to-date requirements. If you plan to stay in a small town or village, COVID testing may not be available. Plan extra days to get tested.
  • List further testing and self-quarantine requirements. Some destinations may require self-quarantining and/or further testing upon arrival. Check the U.S. embassy and local tourist board websites for each leg of your trip. You may also need to self-quarantine and/or get tested upon returning home. Check with local authorities.
  • Make a list of additional travel recommendations for your destination. Country and region-specific suggestions can be found on the CDC website.

The report also includes checklists lists for a month before, a week before and a day before travel to ease folks back into a more open world.
