The campaign video highlights the key features of Life Fitness Connect, including connectivity to compatible Life Fitness and Cybex equipment, a content library with hundreds of audio and video workouts, as well as in-workout audio coaching that adapts to your biometric data. The campaign will be released by Life Fitness to a global audience, including the United States, Japan, Australia, and more.

AONN+ Joins Organizations in Letter to Congress on Passage of DIVERSE Trials Act

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) joined many organizations in writing to Congress and urging the passage of DIVERSE Trials Act, a bipartisan bill that will help ensure more patients—regardless of their race, economic means, or geographic location—have a chance to enroll in clinical trials.

Clinical drug and treatment trials are key to advancing new standards of care that can improve survival and quality of life for people with cancer. To be successful, clinical trials must enroll participants who are adequate in number and diversified in demographics.

However, some demographic groups have been underrepresented in the clinical trials process; such groups include certain racial and ethnic groups, older adults, rural residents, and those with limited incomes.

Introduced in both the House and Senate, the Diversifying Investigations Via Equitable Research Studies for Everyone (DIVERSE) Trials Act would help increase diversity in clinical trials and make it easier for all people with cancer to participate in clinical trials by reducing their barriers to enrollment. Relevant provisions in the DIVERSE Trials Act include:

  • permits individuals to receive financial support for non-medical costs associated with their participation in clinical trials
  • allows trial sponsors to provide individuals with the technology necessary for them to participate remotely in clinical trials
  • requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to issue guidance on decentralized clinical trials to improve demographic diversity

The AONN+ Policy and Advocacy Committee has applied the navigation voice, support, and signature to the DIVERSE Trials Act. AONN+ leaders believe patient navigation is an inside track for increasing clinical trial participation as navigators have been shown to:

  • address misconceptions that start in the community concerning clinical trials
  • augment logistics of getting to a cancer center with trials
  • introduce clinical trials at an earlier stage of care to increase patient receptivity to participate
  • use cultural competence to remove barriers to trial acceptance
  • form a synergistic relationship between research staff and nurse navigators to raise trial awareness to patients

The DIVERSE Trials Act was sponsored by Sens. Robert Menendez and Tim Scott, and Reps. Raul Ruiz and Larry Buschon.

For more information on this Act, please visit https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s2706/text/is.

The full letter can be viewed here:

Dear Chairs Murray, Neal, and Pallone and Ranking Members Burr, Brady, and McMorris Rodgers:

The undersigned organizations represent millions of patients, health care providers, and advocates for health equity who are deeply committed to improving our science base through the adequate representation of underrepresented communities in vital medical research. We strongly support passage of the Diversifying Investigations Via Equitable Research Studies for Everyone (DIVERSE) Trials Act (H.R. 5030/S. 2706) and urge you to prioritize this bill in your Committees to ensure it is enacted into law this year. The DIVERSE Trials Act would make it easier for all patients to participate in clinical trials while removing barriers that are known to keep certain racial and ethnic groups, older adults, rural residents, and those with limited incomes from being appropriately represented. This legislation has earned bipartisan, bicameral support, takes a practical approach that will lead to near-term improvements, and entails little cost to taxpayers.

The three provisions of the DIVERSE Trials Act will result in more efficient, inclusive, and accessible research, which will benefit the health of all Americans:

First, the legislation would permit individuals to receive financial support for the non-medical costs associated with their participation in clinical trials, by creating a statutory safe harbor for clinical trial sponsors to use in reimbursing such costs. Today, clinical trial sponsors generally supply without charge the drug or technology being investigated while insurers generally cover the other treatment costs associated with a trial. Often, however, patients must pay non-medical costs associated with participating in a clinical trial—such as transportation to a trial site, lodging in another city, meals, and additional childcare. For many people, these costs are difficult to bear and may be the difference between saying “yes” or “no” to a clinical trial that could improve their own care and the care of others suffering from the same disease. For example, a recent study showed that patients making less than $50,000 a year are 30 percent less likely to enroll in a cancer clinical trial.1 Financial barriers are a major barrier for communities underrepresented in clinical trials resulting in trials that do not adequately represent the patient populations who are intended to use the treatments being studied. By clarifying that trial sponsors can financially support patients’ non-medical costs, the DIVERSE Trials Act can change this reality for the better.

Second, the DIVERSE Trials Act would allow trial sponsors to provide individuals with the technology necessary for them to participate remotely in clinical trials. Clinical trials almost always require participants to report their condition, symptoms, side effects, or other data on a regular basis and/or to have certain health indicators monitored by web-enabled technology. Some trials of new treatments consist entirely or substantially of such monitoring and so lend themselves to more comfortable and efficient remote participation. For this to work, however, participants must have access to technologies, such as portable computers, tablets, and software applications. This legislation would take the common-sense step of allowing sponsors to provide such technology to participants in a clinical trial. The benefits of this provision include eliminating a financial barrier to participation in clinical trials that are increasingly incorporating web-enabled technology and fostering the conduct of trials that utilize remote participation and include larger cohorts of underrepresented groups.

Finally, the legislation would require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to issue guidance on decentralized clinical trials. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the need for clinical trials in which patients could participate at or close to home, researchers have long endeavored to make clinical trials more convenient for participants. The decentralized approach could open the door to clinical trials for a much broader array of participants, such as those who live hours from a trial site or do not have the ability to make repeated visits to the trial site due to work or caregiving schedules. A significant hinderance to the conduct of decentralized trials has been the absence of clear guidance on the design, conduct, oversight, and other requirements of this research approach. Issuing guidance on the conduct of decentralized clinical trials is an urgent priority for patients, advocates, and health care researchers alike.

We stand at the cusp of a health care revolution—as breakthroughs in genetics, immunotherapy, systems biology, precision medicine, and other specialties lead to more effective treatments and even potential cures for many of the most intractable diseases. Clinical trials are the means by which such breakthroughs are shown to be effective and safe. Making clinical trials more efficient, inclusive, and accessible—as the DIVERSE Trials Act would do—means bringing the growing benefits of medicine and science closer to every American.

Please prioritize the DIVERSE Trials Act (H.R. 5030/ S. 2706) this year to ensure more patients—regardless of their race, ethnicity, economic means, or geographic location—have a chance to enroll in clinical trials.

Sincerely,

CC:

The Honorable Robert Menendez

The Honorable Tim Scott

The Honorable Raul Ruiz

HoundGames Launches Most Accurate Dog Feeding Calculator Using RER Method

Calculator Screenshot

“We wanted to create a more accurate dog feeding calculator, which also included mix-breed dogs, like our Cavoodle, Bobby,” said Geoff Boileau, cofounder of HoundGames. “We’re looking forward to helping dog owners with the sometimes vexing task of knowing how much to feed their dog.”

Dog feeding calculators predominantly use the ideal weight of a dog to determine the required calories. The problem is mixed breed dogs have no ideal weight, and while in a perfect world all dogs of a breed are uniform in size, this just isn’t the case.

For example, let’s take two Border Collies. One is large for its breed, and one is small for its breed. If they were given the “ideal” calorie intake for their breed, one would not get enough kcals and one would get too many.

Instead, a more accurate measurement is achieved through using RER, or Resting Energy Requirement. RER is the amount of energy required to sustain the basic bodily functions of a dog, such as breathing, heart function, and brain function.

RER is calculated by using this formula found on the Ohio State University of Veterinarian Medical Science website: Take a dog’s weight. If it’s in lbs., then divide this number by 2.2046. This gives the weight of the dog in kilograms. This figure is then multiplied by the dog’s kg weight raised to the ¾ power by 70.

To then accurately calculate a dog’s Daily Energy Requirement (or DER) other factors are then considered.

For example, a puppy requires 3 X the RER to account for its growth rate. A neutered adult dog requires 1.6 X the Resting Energy Requirement. A working dog would also require a higher multiple of the RER.

This RER multiplied produces the kcals required to meet the DER for that specific dog and not their breed. Meaning, it’s not guesswork based on historical breed data or other outside factors. It’s based on the individual dog’s weight and accounts for their life situation.

After the RER has been multiplied (depending on the dog’s situation), a dog’s owner now has a kcal figure that represents their dog’s Daily Energy Requirement. This daily kcal requirement is then divided by the kcals per cup found on the back of kibble packaging.

The dog’s owner now knows how many cups of their purchased dog food are required to feed their dog for their energy requirement. HoundGames have made this calculation process simple by creating an easy-to-use dog feeding calculator.

After attaining the number of cups required to feed their dog, the owner would then monitor their dog’s weight and use a Body Condition Score chart to determine when their dog’s ideal weight has been met.

For more complex life situations, such as an overweight, neutered adult working dog, a visit to a veterinarian is recommended for tailored professional advice. However, for the majority of dogs, the HoundGames RER dog feeding calculator can make a complex task easy and give a good ballpark starting point for feeding dogs.

Penetron Stops Bacteria-Generated Acid Attacks in Kansas City

Penetron’s antimicrobial admixture provides crucial long-term protection from MIC. Our new admixture will ensure the needed durability to the new Wolcott WWTP and minimize the need for future repairs of the concrete structures.

The $22 million expansion and upgrade of the Wolcott wastewater treatment infrastructure in Kansas City, Kansas was completed in November 2021. Penetron’s antimicrobial admixture was specified to ensure the durability of concrete elements exposed to aggressive acids generated by bacteria commonly found in sewer systems.

“Due to the region’s continued population growth and the need to meet increasingly stringent regulatory guidelines for effluent quality, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City had to upgrade the existing wastewater treatment plants with expanded capacity – and improved treatment technology,” explains Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group.

The expansion of the Wolcott Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) implemented the AquaNereda® aerobic granular sludge treatment process, a sustainable and cost-effective wastewater treatment technology. Based on the unique characteristics of granular biomass, it uses the robust structure of granules to withstand fluctuations in chemical spikes, load, salt, pH, and toxic shocks. No secondary clarifiers, selectors, separate compartments, or return sludge pumping stations are required, as the biological treatment is accomplished in a single, effective aeration step.

Meeting Growth Projections for Years

The construction of the Wolcott WWTP expansion was carried out in two phases. Initially, a new two million gallon/day (2 MGD) plant was built, with improvements designed to enable expansion to 4 MGD in a follow-up phase over the next 10 years, with a maximum possible capacity of 18 MGD. The plant improvements in the initial phase allowed treatment of average day flows from both the existing Plant 20 and Pump Station 50 service areas, which will meet the projected growth expected over the next several years.

“The project required a robust solution to protect the concrete elements of the new WWTP, which would be exposed to the destructive effects of microbially-induced corrosion (MIC) commonly encountered in sewage systems,” adds Christopher Chen. “Penetron proposed adding our antimicrobial admixture to the concrete mix to prevent MIC from taking place.”

Stopping Microbial-Induced Corrosion (MIC)

Penetron’s local Technical Sales Representative assisted the concrete ready-mix supplier with test batches to ensure the concrete mix met the stringent design specifications.

Penetron’s antimicrobial admixture provides concrete with the much-needed protection from microbial-induced corrosion (MIC), a little-known problem that causes widespread damage to wastewater and sewage-related concrete structures. Concrete sewage systems deteriorate rapidly when hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) found in raw sewage is converted into biogenic sulfuric acid (H2SO4) by thiobacillus bacteria, which causes severe concrete deterioration known as MIC. Penetron’s antimicrobial concrete admixture uses an electro-physical mechanism to destroy the cell-walls of the acid-producing thiobacillus bacteria. Eliminating the bacterial growth on and in the concrete stops the formation of biogenic sulfuric acid. Once the formation of the acid is stopped, MIC cannot take place.

Antimicrobial Protection is Permanent

Added to the concrete mix during batching, much like the well-known PENETRON ADMIX waterproofing admixture, the antimicrobial admixture becomes part of the concrete matrix and is leach resistant. The effectiveness of the antimicrobial admixture is not lessened by repeated contact with bacteria.

“Penetron’s antimicrobial admixture provides crucial long-term protection from MIC,” adds Christopher Chen. “Our new admixture will ensure the needed durability to the new Wolcott WWTP and minimize the need for future repairs of the concrete structures.”

The Penetron Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs, and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives, and distribution channels.

For the 4th Year, PFI Advisors Announces its Participation in #GivingTuesday

News Image

PFI Advisors announced today that for the fourth year in a row, the firm will again participate in the important #GivingTuesday campaign. For any RIA that purchases an annual subscription to The COO Society between now and year end, PFI Advisors will donate all proceeds to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles donation page of Layla Paige Sonnen. The COO Society is an online learning platform built for RIA operations professionals. The platform’s courses provide relevant information for RIAs of all sizes and helps them hone the skills needed to effectively run their business and drive growth in a profitable fashion. Each course includes several recorded virtual consultations with founder and CEO, Matt Sonnen, as well as outside interviews with industry consultants and centers of influence who provide real-world application of the course content.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many plan for their holiday and end-of-year giving. PFI Advisors has always highlighted charities close to its team members’ hearts. The Sonnen family became especially attached to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles when their daughter, Layla Paige, suffered a seizure at 6 months old and spent the next 22 months battling a brain disorder under the care of CHLA. Layla ultimately succumbed to her condition on July 8, 2017, but the Sonnen and PFI family continue to look for ways to give back to the organization that holds such a special place in their hearts.

Never Give Up—It’s Where You Finish That Counts” is an inspiring argument for working towards one’s goals

“It’s Never Too Late: Never Give Up—It’s Where You Finish That Counts”: an empowering exploration of pushing oneself to fulfill God’s intended plans. “It’s Never Too Late: Never Give Up—It’s Where You Finish That Counts” is the creation of published author Rubye Graham-Emerson, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who recently earned Doctorates of Christian Counseling from International College of Ministry (ICM).

Graham-Emerson shares, “Anyone and everyone can find an excuse to not fulfill the dreams they have for their lives. But an excuse is just a postponement of what you really can and should accomplish. Everyone has a purpose. The reason you are here on earth may differ from the reason I am here. But we can both fulfill the unique purpose God has planned for us. It’s never too late to discover that and accomplish it. Through personal testimonies, It’s Never Too Late will encourage and motivate you to fulfill your own dreams.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Rubye Graham-Emerson’s new book is a powerfully engaging argument for striving for excellence.

With testimonies and thoughtful reflection, Graham-Emerson shares an encouraging and motivating exploration of mankind’s desire to pursue hopes and dreams.

Consumers can purchase “It’s Never Too Late: Never Give Up—It’s Where You Finish That Counts” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.
