To the single mom who has been trying to get clean for years, there is a way. To the person down the street who is broken and feels hopeless, help is available. To the stressed alcoholic with a history of mental health issues, recovery is possible. To the person struggling with substance use disorder behind closed doors, hope is here – and it’s found at John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC).

It’s been over 50 years since JBRC first opened its doors. It all started in 1969 when John Brooks, an Atlantic City resident, former addict and ex-con realized that if he stopped using drugs, he’d stop going to prison. Shortly thereafter, Brooks was brave enough to share his story and eventually open a small storefront outpatient program dedicated to helping individuals with substance use disorders. The nonprofit was quickly accepted by the community and has since evolved through the years as it continues to grow exponentially.

JBRC provides a host of treatment options that attest to its success, as well as two recovery community centers, a recovery housing program and physical health. This month, the nonprofit opened the doors to its new residential treatment facility in Mays Landing that expands its current continuum of care and allows the organization to serve even more people. In conjunction with the opening, JBRC also unveiled a refreshed brand identity and was also named #1 Gold Drug and Alcohol Recovery Program by Best of the Press 2020.

Throughout all its endeavors and accolades, JBRC has remained focused on one thing – to help individuals who are struggling with substance use disorder to achieve recovery – regardless of their financial circumstance. “This is an exciting time in the life of John Brooks Recovery Center as we open our new state-of-the-art residential treatment facility,” said Michael Santillo, CEO of JBRC. “In conjunction with this grand opening, we felt it was so important for us to have an enhanced brand identity and properly positioned mission that will help us better serve the community.”

John Brooks Recovery Center’s refreshed mission is to provide the highest quality, evidence-based treatment services to help individuals overcome substance use disorders regardless of financial circumstance or socio-economic background. The nonprofit’s enhanced logo is a natural evolution of the original John Brooks logo and further builds on its unparalleled continuum of care, specializing in recovery, hope and healing. These three words are also symbolized through the light blue trifecta icon, which appears in specific circular logo variations highlighting the nonprofit’s 50 years of dedicated service.

JBRC’s new $18M Mays Landing residential treatment facility offers a recovery-oriented model that integrates physical health, behavioral health and recovery support services. This new facility offers 46 short-term beds, 46 long-term beds and 23 detox beds, and will expand its current continuum of care, allowing the organization to help even more people overcome substance use disorders.

“Our programs are clinically driven with a length of stay from 3-6 months for long-term residential and consist of individual, group and family counseling, psychoeducation classes, medication assisted treatment, recreation, psychiatric services, medical services and education services,” Santillo said.

A 55-year-old JBRC client attests to the nonprofit’s success in her own life. “Here at John Brooks, the counselors showed me how to identify my character defects and deal with them, as well as look for my triggers and have a plan to prevent relapse,” she says. “The meetings have made me comfortable with my Higher Power and understanding how to work the 12 steps. If I didn’t come to JBRC, alcohol would have likely killed me. But being here has taught me how to live.”
