Thai Hospital with Self-Healing Properties

Largest private health center in Eastern Thailand: The new 5-floor wing expands Kasemrad Hospital’s capacity to 115-beds and even includes a rooftop garden.

Even when constantly exposed to the tropical climate in Thailand, the service life of Penetron-treated concrete can be as much as three times longer than conventional concrete.

Construction at the Kasemrad Hospital in Sa Kaeo, Thailand was completed on May 11, 2020 which now features a greatly enlarged and enhanced medical facility. Penetron crystalline technology was used to waterproof the hospital’s new concrete below-grade basement structures, water tanks, and rooftop garden.

Part of the Bangkok Chain Hospital (BCH) network of private hospitals, the Kasemrad Hospital in Sa Kaeo, on the Cambodian border in Eastern Thailand, was upgraded to a full-service hospital and healthcare center. The hospital now provides general and internal medical services, including a full range of surgical facilities, pediatrics, a nutrition center, dermatology and other specialties. The new 5-floor wing expanded the hospital’s capacity to 115-beds.

“With the completion of the expansion project, the Kasemrad Hospital in Sa Kaeo is now the largest private health center in Eastern Thailand,” says Boonmanop Siewsirikul, from Penetron Thailand.

Looking for a Proven Waterproofing Solution

The project engineers contacted the local Penetron organization to collaborate on an effective and proven waterproofing solution for the hospital’s new basement structure, the potable drinking water tanks, and the concrete elements of the rooftop garden.

“We were able to show the project engineers and the contractor the results of many other successful applications of Penetron’s crystalline technology in Thailand,” recalls Boonmanop Siewsirikul. “They were quickly convinced by the resulting impermeability and the permanent self-healing capabilities of concrete treated with Penetron products.”

PENETRON ADMIX was subsequently specified for the below-grade structures such as, the foundation slab, basement walls and drinking water tanks. PENETRON was topically applied to over 10,000 m2 (110,000 square feet) of rooftop concrete surfaces of the hospital that are exposed to the environment.

Stopping Water Penetration into Concrete

The proprietary chemicals in PENETRON ADMIX react with concrete to generate a network of insoluble crystals, which fill in the micro-cracks, pores and capillaries in the substrate. This stops any water penetration into the concrete of the new Kasemrad Hospital wing, which is now permanently waterproof.

“Even when constantly exposed to the tropical climate in Thailand, the service life of Penetron-treated concrete can be as much as three times longer than conventional concrete,” adds Boonmanop Siewsirikul.
