SRND and LexisNexis Risk Solutions Introduce the CodeDay Big Data Challenge

We hope this new program helps to encourage students to build the skills and knowledge that is necessary to pursue technology careers.

On November 9, thousands of high school students across the country will compete to solve real-world problems in the CodeDay Big Data Challenge. SRND, a non-protfit organization that promotes STEM education for high school students and LexisNexis® Risk Solutions have partnered to offer the competition – which is a newly added twist for CodeDay, a 24-hour programming event hosted seasonally in 53 cities across the US and Canada.

During the new competition, student teams will be given 90 minutes to devise a big data solution using two open data sets that relate to gaming and music. They will use the same technology and techniques used to solve problems such as the detection of money laundering or compromised user accounts. To aid in analyzing the data, students will be granted access to HPCC Systems®, LexisNexis Risk Solution’s leading, open source big data processing platform.

The Big Data Challenge will be held as one of many events at CodeDay, a 24-hour event that gives beginner middle and high school students the tools and mentoring to explore programming and computer science.

“We’re really excited about this partnership because our students want to solve problems that improve their world. Increasingly, that requires working with the tremendous amount of data available,” said Tyler Menezes, Executive Director at SRND. “This opens up a lot of possibilities.”

“As it is forecasted that the amount of data in the world is expected to exceed 40 trillion gigabytes (40 zettabytes) by 2020, the need for data scientists will continue to increase,” said Arjuna Chala, Senior Director, Operations, LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “We hope this new program helps to encourage students to build the skills and knowledge that is necessary to pursue technology careers.”
