Spanish-language men’s health book offers candid advice from prostate health to a fulfilled sex life, and everything in-between

For men living in certain areas, access to healthcare for prostate cancer, is limited. It makes no difference where a man lives; skipping annual physicals and prostate cancer is a recipe for disaster.

I want men to know their lives matter and so does their health. I plan to continue to reach and educate as many men as possible about prostate health and remove the stigma associated with prostate cancer.

Men living in Spanish-speaking countries already have a men’s health book of accurate, up-to-date health information on prostate cancer in their language just for them.

Written by Dr. David Samadi, Director of Men’s Health and Urology Oncology at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York, the book is titled, Hablemos De Hombres (Let’s Talk About Men) and subtitled, Todo lo que necesitas saber para mejorar tu salud fisica y sexual (Everything you need to know to improve your physical and sexual health). Hablemos De Hombres was translated to a Spanish-speaking audience from his first book which debuted in 2020, The Ultimate MANual, Dr. Samadi’s Guide to Men’s Health and Wellness.

“I’m very excited to offer my first book on men’s health as a translated rendition for Spanish-speaking men everywhere,” said Dr. Samadi. “For men living in certain areas, access to healthcare, especially for prostate cancer, is limited which concerns me. Unfortunately, one of these areas is the Dominican Republic, a Spanish-speaking country.”

Dr. Samadi explained, “I’ve worked extensively with the Dominican Republic on achieving better health facilities for men. In 2014, I opened the Samadi HOMS Robotic Institute at the Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago,(1) My team and I educate, do research, and perform robotic prostate cancer surgery for men in this area. After my first book, I knew I wanted it translated to Spanish, offering men speaking this language including their wives, girlfriends, mothers, and sisters, a chance to learn about men’s health, particularly prostate health.”

According to the CDC, prostate cancer is the 9th leading cause of death in the Dominican Republic. Besides prostate cancer, no other cancer is listed in the top 10 causes of death in this country. Even though life expectancy and quality of life have improved in this Caribbean country, there is still room for improvement. As of 2019, the life expectancy at birth of men living in the Dominican Republic is 71 years.

“As a prostate cancer surgeon, my focus is on the health of a man’s prostate,” exclaimed Dr. Samadi. “It makes no difference where a man lives; skipping annual physicals and prostate cancer screenings is a recipe for disaster. One reason is the stigma associated with this disease. Some men are uncomfortable of prostate cancer screening procedures like the digital rectal exam or of the prostate’s connection to erectile dysfunction.(2) I tell men, do not delay seeing your doctor when experiencing symptoms of prostate cancer.(3) Get a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test along with a digital rectal exam. These screening tools help find prostate cancer at an earlier, more survivable stage.”

Besides chapters on prostate health and prostate cancer, the book also addresses men’s overall health and wellness. For example, it covers the power of sexual health on men, exercise, healthy eating, sleep, stress, and various male reproductive system issues.

“I want men to know their lives matter and so does their health,” explained Dr. Samadi. He went on to add, “I deeply care about men’s health no matter where they live. It’s been a privilege taking care of men in my career, and I plan to continue to educate men about prostate health and remove the stigma associated with prostate cancer. And the only way that happens is to keep talking about men’s health and why it’s important, which my book does exactly that.”
