Wellness is on a huge upwards trajectory and GWI’s rich country and regional data is a key tool for helping investors, business leaders and government agencies crystalize the significant wellness market opportunities ahead

The nonprofit Global Wellness Institute (GWI), the leading research and educational resource for the $4.4 trillion global wellness industry, today launched “Geography of Wellness” with the help of its first country partner, Singapore. The new GWI microsite takes a deep dive into a country’s wellness economy, painting a clear picture of where it is positioned in the booming wellness market and giving countries a platform to showcase their wellness assets.

Susie Ellis, GWI chair and CEO, explains, “Every destination has something unique to offer when it comes to wellness – both for locals and tourists alike – and forward-looking countries and regions are realizing that there is no better time than now to start planting the seeds to grow the positive impact wellness will have on its citizens, community and economy in the years to come.”

GWI’s 2021 research report, “The Global Wellness Economy: Looking Beyond Covid,” forecasts that the wellness economy is on track to expand to $7 trillion by 2025(1).

“Wellness is on a huge upwards trajectory and GWI’s rich country and regional data is a key tool for helping investors, business leaders and government agencies crystalize the significant wellness market opportunities ahead,” continued Ellis. “We’re grateful to the Singapore Tourism Board for recognizing this and for making Singapore GWI’s first country partner in our new ‘Geography of Wellness’ platform.”

Wellness in Singapore

Whether pursuing an active lifestyle, seeking innovative urban wellness concepts, or just spending time in nature, Singapore promises leisure and business travelers a wide range of high-quality, safe, and accessible wellness experiences.

From innovative fitness offerings like in-mall climbing gyms and aqua spinning, unique mindfulness practitioners with urban forest bathing services and floatation therapy, clean eating gastronomic experiences, and 5-star wellness hotels for the perfect respite, the ideal wellness getaway is easily within reach in Singapore. This June 3-12, Singapore will launch its inaugural Wellness Festival Singapore, the country’s first nationwide effort to promote holistic wellbeing that boasts a 10-day line-up of over 130 offerings to showcase the breadth of quality wellness experiences available.

According to GWI’s research, Singapore’s wellness economy is ranked #14 among Asia-Pacific’s 45 countries, a region that was also one of the fastest-growing wellness markets (+8.1%) between the 2017 to 2019 pre-pandemic years and shrank the least during 2020 (-6.4%).

GWI’s Geography of Wellness also highlights Singapore’s standings in the eleven wellness sectors that GWI tracks within the wellness economy. In 2020, Singapore ranked among the top 30 countries in several categories, including #19 for Wellness Real Estate, #29 for Public Health, Prevention, & Personalized Medicine, and #30 for Traditional & Complementary, among the 218 countries worldwide where GWI collects data.

“The wellness economy data that GWI provides is important as it will help us identify opportunities to grow Singapore’s appeal in the wellness tourism space,” said Ms. Ong Ling Lee, Executive Director, Sports & Wellness, Singapore Tourism Board. “As a city in nature where rest and rejuvenation are just a heartbeat away, we believe Singapore is well-positioned to be a leading Urban Wellness haven. Our accessible and innovative wellness offerings set us apart from other destinations. We welcome new ideas, partnerships and solutions to further develop our wellness offerings and ensure they appeal to visitors of different interests and passions, to enjoy quality respite in Singapore.”

In addition to featuring country-specific wellness economic data in the Geography of Wellness section of the GWI website, which is considered the leading online resource for unbiased global wellness research, the partnership also includes a dedicated Singapore Wellness Economy Report. This report, which is free to download thanks to the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, takes a detailed dive into Singapore’s position in all eleven wellness sectors. The report and its data are an invaluable tool for businesses or investors interested in exploring the opportunities and potential of Singapore’s dynamic wellness market.

Interest in GWI’s Geography of Wellness microsite has been robust and the research organization is preparing additional country reports to be released soon.

Mental Health Center of Denver Launches New Virtual Therapy Service & Introduces New Name: WellPower

[ad_1]

“It’s fitting that our first announcement as WellPower is to introduce TherapyDirect, our new, free virtual service. Same-day counseling is just a click away and is a new way we are powering the pursuit of well-being in Denver as WellPower,” said Carl Clark, M.D., WellPower president & CEO.

Mental Health Center of Denver introduced a new virtual therapy service today and announced it has changed its name from Mental Health Center of Denver to WellPower. The name change was made to reflect the nonprofit organization’s expanded services and to promote the vital connection between a person’s mental health and overall well-being.

“For more than 30 years, our team has delivered science-backed, compassionate care as Denver’s community mental health center. Our work today has evolved and encompasses so much more than what a traditional mental health center offers,” said WellPower President and CEO Carl Clark, MD. “It’s fitting that our first announcement as WellPower is to introduce TherapyDirect, our new, free virtual service. Same-day counseling is just a click away and is a new way we are powering the pursuit of well-being in Denver as WellPower.”

Nationwide, one in five people experience a mental health challenge in any given year, yet only 40 percent of people who need help access it. WellPower is working to close this gap by meeting people where they are and offering innovative approaches – like TherapyDirect – to treat mental illness and support better well-being.

With TherapyDirect, metro Denver residents ages 18 and older can access a WellPower counselor, schedule up to three free visits when support is needed most and get follow-up recommendations and referrals. Individuals can sign-up online Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at wellpower.org/therapydirect. Therapists and peer-based support counselors are available for full 55-minute sessions and are trained in intervention care, ensuring each session is impactful. TherapyDirect is easy to access from any personal technology device or can be used from kiosks around the Denver community.

TherapyDirect enables WellPower to meet people onscreen more quickly. Clinicians continue to offer in-person care and work in the community, in schools, shelters, churches and courtrooms. They ride alongside police and paramedics to reach people who need help. WellPower welcomes infants, children, teens, adults and families to its 35 locations and on screen.

“In 2019, we began a rebranding effort because the world had changed dramatically since our inception three decades ago. The pandemic has only accelerated these changes and updating our brand and offering new services like TherapyDirect will help us meet the rapidly increasing need for care that is stretching capacity for behavioral healthcare nationwide,” noted Clark.

WellPower’s commitment to well-being is also evident in its recently announced “Living Wage Initiative,” which set a minimum hourly rate of $24.04 per hour for all employees, regardless of part- or full-time status. This equates to a minimum of $50,000 annually for full time employees. Adjustments were made to bring the average pay for each job into the 60th percentile of market rate, not just among community mental health centers but across all of health care.

“While our name and look have changed, we are the same organization made up of the same people who are deeply committed to serving our community in person and online,” concluded Clark.

Notes on the Name Change –

  • Mental Health Center of Denver website URL changed to: wellpower.org. The original website will automatically direct visitors to the new site.
  • WellPower signage is being installed at all locations and communication has been sent to all people served by WellPower.
  • WellPower’s mission remains the same: Enriching lives and minds by focusing on strengths and well-being.

Delray Beach Rehab Facility Partners With Local Theatre CompanyTo Spread Awareness About Addiction

[ad_1]

By encouraging our community to have more of an understanding of addiction through our artistic work and through collaborations like these, maybe there’s some small way NCP can make it easier for people to come forward about their struggles

Reco Intensive, a Delray Beach addiction treatment center offering a variety of outpatient rehabilitation options to those pursuing recovery from substance use disorders, is partnering with Broward County theatre company New City Players to develop a blog series about addiction in conjunction with the latter’s upcoming production of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winning work Water By The Spoonful.

This latest initiative is part of an established pattern of community engagement for Reco, which has also supported the missions of various other local arts and charity organizations and consistently works to give back to its former clients with its active alumni programming. The partnership is also part of a pattern of local outreach from New City Players (NCP), which distinguishes itself from other area theatre companies with their stated mission of creating community through transformative theatre in the service of their vision of helping South Florida to become a more empathetic and thoughtful community.

While in-person events aimed at creating dialogue about the social and cultural issues explored in their shows are a regular part of NCP’s programming, the shift towards online content brought about by the recent pandemic inspired producing artistic director Timothy Mark Davis to consider taking some of this work into the digital sphere in conjunction with Water By The Spoonful.

Much of the play takes place in an online recovery chat room, following four characters who rely on each other’s support and guidance as they struggle to maintain their sobriety from crack cocaine. This subject matter, combined with the scope and urgency of South Florida’s current addiction crisis, made substance use disorder a natural choice of issue for the company to focus on and Reco a natural choice for a community partner.

“We’re the expert storytellers, but we’re not the front line resource for helping those with substance use disorder, or any social issue, let’s be honest! When we can leverage our storytelling skills and point folks towards a partner who knows what they’re doing, it’s a sweet spot for us,” Davis explained.

After Davis’s initial spark, the idea of a collaborative blog series exploring issues of addiction was further developed and eventually executed by Ilana Jael, who is both a resident content writer at Reco Intensive and a New City Players company member. Jael is also enthusiastic about the project, which she has fittingly entitled “Building Connections” and which has thus far encompassed topics like the importance of being informed about harm reduction, Broward County’s role in the origin of America’s opioid epidemic, and how broader cultural issues like racism play into the politics of addiction.

“It’s been great to have my worlds collide like this and to be able to work on some more in-depth content about topics that feel so relevant. As important as the blogging I do for Reco feels, sometimes it also feels like I’m just preaching to the choir or shouting into the void. But by connecting some of my work writing about addiction to this theatre project, maybe that will mean some of our audiences who wouldn’t be interested in these issues otherwise end up more informed about them,” Jael explains.

Jael is also hopeful that the partnership will help fight the intense stigma surrounding substance use disorder by spreading awareness about the condition and messages of hope about recovery, and that it will bring greater community attention to Reco Intensive’s treatment program.

“One of the other pieces I’m working on for this project is an interview piece about a former Reco client who’s just now celebrating their one year sobriety anniversary, and it was clear from the way she talked about Reco how absolutely critical they were to her recovery—how much the staff here actually cares about the people they’re helping and how much of a rarity that actually is in this industry,” she reflects.

“By encouraging our community to have more of an understanding of addiction through our artistic work and through collaborations like these, maybe there’s some small way NCP can make it easier for people to come forward about their struggles and find their way to places like Reco where they can pursue the recovery they deserve,” she says.

[ad_1]

News Image

BrightStar Care, a national home care and medical staffing franchise with more than 365 locally owned and operated locations nationwide, was awarded The Joint Commission’s 2022 Enterprise Champion for Quality Award for the tenth consecutive year, reinforcing the brand’s devotion to the highest standards of quality and safety in home health care.

BrightStar Care is the only home care organization to achieve this title for the last decade, with more than 95 percent of its independently owned and operated offices accredited by The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare. Additionally, BrightStar Care is one of only two franchisors to receive this title since the award’s inception in 2013.

Receiving the Gold Seal of Approval® from The Joint Commission means that healthcare organizations have completed a comprehensive on-site review and precisely follow the standards and requirements established by The Joint Commission. To achieve accreditation, organizations must incorporate and consistently maintain Joint Commission standards and requirements into their policies, procedures, processes, and training materials. Joint Commission accreditation helps organizations improve safety procedures, which have become even more crucial amid the ongoing pandemic.

“BrightStar Care’s number one priority is to deliver the highest standard of high-quality in-home care, so our clients can age safely and independently in the comfort of their own homes. We are grateful that The Joint Commission continues to recognize our efforts and has once again awarded us with its Enterprise Champion for Quality Award,” said Shelly Sun, founder and CEO, of BrightStar Care. “The challenges of the past two years have made it evident that the future of healthcare is in the home and how crucial access to quality home care is. With this award, we will continue to collaborate with our franchisees to ensure that our clients receive industry-leading, high-quality care.”

“We are thrilled to have been awarded The Joint Commission’s Enterprise Champion for Quality Award for the last decade. Even during a global pandemic our clinical quality did not decrease, and this award is a testament to that,” said Josie Rhoades, vice president of Clinical Operations, BrightStar Care. “We take great pride in providing a higher standard of care and assuring our franchisees are equipped with the right training, clinical support, and resources to remain a recipient of this prestigious honor.”

“We are pleased to recognize BrightStar Care with the Enterprise Champion for Quality Award for the tenth consecutive year,” said Gary Bachrach, executive director, Home Care Accreditation Program, The Joint Commission. “We applaud the BrightStar Care organization for its commitment and effort to work closely with its franchisees to continue to improve quality and safety for the many individuals and families it serves nationwide.”

Joint Commission accreditation is a known quality indicator within the industry. It is the same organization that accredits and certifies more than 22,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation has allowed BrightStar Care to help its clients continue to live safely in their own homes and improve the quality of their lives, as well as to help prevent hospital re-admissions and decrease ER visits, falls, infections, and unnecessary health care costs for clients.

Chiropractor and Fitness Expert, Dr. Anthony Lauro says “You can have your cake and eat it too”

[ad_1]

Dr. Anthony Lauro releases his new book today on Amazon, Fit, Fuel, Function, a veritable ‘how-to’ guide for mature adults who want to live a balanced, full and fit lifestyle without sacrificing the things they love most. A chiropractor with over 33 years of experience and an avid amateur athlete, Dr. Lauro teaches Americans that they can lead a healthy, active life without drastically changing their lives or eating habits. “You don’t have to live like a monk or exercise like a fanatic to be healthy and feel great,” explains. “Health is our natural state; it’s our job to put the body in the right environment to express health.”

Fit, Fuel, Function covers everything from exercise, mindful eating and chiropractic care to stress reduction and cognitive function without overcomplicating the processes or resorting to scientific jargon. “You don’t need a Ph.D. in nutrition to eat healthy and lose weight. Keep it simple: minimize overly processed foods, get a good balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates, and supplement where necessary to ensure you’re getting sufficient vitamins and minerals,” explains Dr. Lauro. “For example, many health issues like low energy levels, aches and pains, and difficult weight loss can simply be from not drinking enough water. As we get older, dehydration can accelerate degeneration and cause disease.”

Though Americans are living longer, the overall health of American society is in decline. US citizens rank 37th out of 50 industrialized countries in general health, according to the World Health Organization. Two thirds of the US population is overweight; chronic diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and autoimmune disease are on the rise. Fit Fuel Function teaches mature Americans how to obtain and maintain optimal health and weight while living a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, mindful eating, stress reduction and improved body functions while still enjoying good food and fun.

Dr. Anthony Lauro

An avid amateur athlete who has devoted his life to health and caregiving, Dr. Anthony Lauro graduated Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1989 with honors in research. Dr. Lauro specializes in senior healthcare and athletics. He co-designed the Stay Fit Senior System and co-founded Stay Fit Senior Inc. in 2006. In 1991, his research study, “Chiropractic Effects on Athletic Ability,” was published in the April issue of ‘The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation.’ His first book, Stay Fit Seniors, focused on specific exercises regimens for aging Americans. With Fit, Fuel, Function, Dr. Lauro tackles healthy living from a more holistic viewpoint, encompassing diet, lifestyle, stress reduction and more. SPIRE Welcomes Four-Time All-American and WNBA Champion Candice Wiggins as Director and Head Coach of Women’s Basketball

[ad_1]

Candice Wiggins - SPIRE Academy

Candice Wiggins – SPIRE Academy

I see my program being home to a very healthy, competitive environment, with like-minded individuals who share a common passion for the beloved sport of basketball.

Since the announcement earlier this year of a new women’s basketball program coming to the international athletic academy, SPIRE accepted numerous applications for the role of Director and Head Coach to lead the way. One application stood out from the rest; former Stanford Cardinal and WNBA champion, Candice Wiggins. The four-time All-American will be joining SPIRE to help build and lead the women’s basketball academy in Geneva.

Wiggins is a well-recognized name in women’s basketball, boasting a decorated career on the court in both the college and professional ranks. A prominent scorer, Wiggins’ collegiate basketball experience at Stanford includes being ranked second in career points in school history and third in Pac-12 history. Alongside her impressive collegiate basketball career, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Stanford.

Wiggins went on to play in the WNBA for eight seasons, which included stints with the Tulsa Shock, New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx. In 2008, she was named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year and won a WNBA championship in 2011 with the Lynx.

She boasts international professional basketball experience as well, playing in Israel, Greece, Spain and Turkey. Wiggins has worked and coached in AAU and high school basketball since she retired from her professional basketball career.

What drew her to SPIRE was the opportunity to lead and create a new women’s basketball program that essentially revolutionizes an approach to both training and competition. Wiggins explains, “It is a position that allows me to serve a sport and a community that has given me so much on all levels, both domestically and internationally: high school, college and professionally.”

SPIRE’s Director of Basketball, Jeff Javorek, is looking forward to working with Wiggins. “Candice is a huge addition to the SPIRE family. She has a great vision and strategy to help launch and grow the SPIRE women’s basketball program. The success she has had in her high school, college and professional playing experience will help shape all of the young women that will come through our program.” Javorek adds, “We will be a top destination for young women who want to learn and develop from Candice. She is very passionate, intelligent and hard-working and is excited about giving back to the sport that has done so much for her.”

Wiggins sees big potential in SPIRE’s women’s basketball, saying, “I see the future of women’s basketball at SPIRE as a destination for women to become the most dynamic versions of themselves as student athletes, with the world class facilities and resources to enable injury prevention and mental health, in my opinion, the two biggest factors relating to player development. I see my program being home to a very healthy, competitive environment, with like-minded individuals who share a common passion for the beloved sport of basketball.”

The addition of Wiggins to the SPIRE coaching team is part of their commitment to placing more women in leadership roles within the academy. Along with recently hired Molly McColloch as Assistant Swim Coach and a soon-to-be-named Assistant Track & Field Coach, SPIRE continues to lead the way when it comes to having a diverse and inclusive leadership team.

Wiggins will host the first women’s basketball camp at SPIRE will be on Thursday, June 23rd and is open to girls from ages 9 to 17. The clinic will cover the fundamental skills and competition drills that will highlight the teaching and instruction that will be available full-time for those who join the Academy. For more information, please visit spireinstitute.org/camps/camps-basketball.

Detox and Rehab Facility Encourages Trauma Therapy for Lasting Change in Addiction Recovery

[ad_1]

Our goal is to allow patients to understand that their addiction has been used as a coping skill, and to teach these individuals more positive and productive coping mechanisms when traumatic memories or events arise

Gloria Detox and Rehab Center, a luxury inpatient drug and alcohol addiction treatment center in Los Angeles, provides access to trauma therapy and PTSD centered programs so individuals can get to the root of their substance abuse disorder. By understanding the social and environmental causes that led to addiction, those struggling are able to develop tools and skills to successfully overcome addiction and gain healing from underlying mental illness.

“Trauma affects us as individuals more than we can possibly imagine,” says Shant Khajadourian, Clinical Director at Gloria Detox and Rehab Center. “So often those who struggle with substance abuse do so because unresolved traumatic memories are triggered. Our goal is to allow patients to understand that their addiction has been used as a coping skill, and to teach these individuals more positive and productive coping mechanisms when traumatic memories or events arise.”

Gloria Detox and Rehab Center allows individuals to re-establish their sense of self and understand the impact that traumatic events have had on their lives. The Los Angeles based rehab center provides comprehensive trauma therapy, as well as mental health services that address PTSD, depression, anxiety, and more.

Gloria’s dual diagnosis program uniquely combines the benefits of mental health therapy with addiction recovery. This blend allows individuals to get to the root of addictive tendencies, and learn skills for long-term recovery that can be implemented, even when formal treatment has been completed.

“We continuously encounter individuals who do not realize it was an event from their past that may be leading them to abuse substances. When we allow people to see their alcohol and drug use as a coping mechanism instead of a character flaw, then true healing can begin.”

Morehouse School of Medicine’s “Danforth Dialogues” Podcast Hosts Historic Discussion with Atlanta University Center Presidents

[ad_1]

Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) published the latest edition of its new “Danforth Dialogues” podcast, featuring an historic discussion with Atlanta University Center presidents on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the resulting challenges and opportunities now before their institutions.

In what may be the only gathering of its type between prominent HBCU leaders to reflect on the pandemic, Clark Atlanta University President Dr. George French Jr; Morehouse College President Dr. David A. Thomas and Spelman College President Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell joined Morehouse School of Medicine President and CEO Dr. Valerie Montgomry Rice to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on their students and surrounding community.

“After two very difficult years, it appears that the COVID-19 virus is becoming more endemic, and it looks like we are finally starting to see the light at the end of tunnel,” said Dr. Montgomery Rice. “We were extremely grateful to have the presidents of three of the country’s most prominent HBCUs join us to look at leadership beyond the pandemic and the challenges and opportunities before us today.”

The four presidents discussed a wide range of topics during the podcast including how the four institutions collaborated to keep campus infection rates low, continue to address residual effects of the pandemic, particularly student mental health, and ways they are using experiences they faced to create new opportunities for their schools.

Dr. Schmidt Campbell noted that while the four presidents were able to mitigate the pandemic on their campuses, “something very profound happened to our communities…the pressures on our community over and beyond the pandemic were real and ever present and as a leader I also had to also be a pastoral figure.”

“Part of the role of a leader is to hold the anxiety of the community so that the community can go about the work,” said Dr. Thomas. “I became very conscious of this as a part of my role as a leader. Part of that is speaking to the anxiety and part of that is speaking to the work that still had to be done.”

Dr. French pointed out that COVID-19 drove “transformational change” at Clark Atlanta University, noting that the university created an online learning platform for 4,000 students in two weeks. “As Eric Hoffer said, in times of great change, learners in inherit the earth while the learned inherit a world that no longer exists,” said Dr. French, paraphrasing one of the philosopher’s more famous quotes.
