“In 2022, it is staggering to consider that your zip code largely drives the quality of your healthcare” says Jamie Frew, CEO of Carepatron.

With over 6,000 hospitals in America, it is staggering that healthcare quality differs significantly across states. Carepatron found that with health systems ranking last amongst 11 other high-income countries, America faces tremendous barriers when supplying hospitals with the same level of healthcare.

With over 64 million Americans accessing Medicare insurance services, focusing on how hospital quality is determined through their system data is significant. Medicare oversees practically all expenditure and treatment costs, and understanding this data can assist people in evaluating alternatives.

Why is this important?

The Commonwealth Fund identifies that across 71 measures in 5 categories of access to care, care process, administrative efficiency, equity, and health care outcomes, the U.S consistently ranked poorly compared to other countries’ health systems.

In the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the United States has upheld one of the highest death rates in the world, with the disease burden being 37% higher. Using age and risk-standardized mortality rates, the HAQ Index indicates that the U.S ranked with a score of 88.7 out of 100, in comparison to the average of 93.7 in terms of treatment outcomes. Additionally, hospital admissions for various diseases (including diabetes, asthma, and heart failure, amongst many others) demonstrate that the U.S. has higher admissions than comparable countries per 100,000 population.

Ranking Factors

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provides quality measure information on hospital care and releases public data concerning the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating.CMS is able to measure America’s hospital quality as an accumulation of the following categories:

1. Mortality (22%)

2. Safety (22%)

3. Readmission (22%)

4. Patient Experience (22%)

5. Timely and Effective Care (12%)

Places in America with the Best Hospitals

According to one of the most recent sets of Medicaredata, the states that ranked in order from the highest in terms of average quality scores were:

1. Wisconsin

2. South Dakota

3. Utah

4. Hawaii

5. Idaho

6. Alaska

7. Minnesota

8. Montana

9. Indiana

10. Colorado.

In the number one spot, Wisconsin ranked with a score of 3.9 out of 5 stars, with Colorado having the lowest ranking within the top 10 with a score of 3.6.

Places in America with the Worst Hospitals

When examining the most recent set of Medicare data, the states that ranked in order from the worst in terms of average quality scores were:

1. New York

2. Nevada

3. Florida

4. Mississippi

5. Arkansas

6. New Jersey

7. New Mexico

8. Tennessee

9. Connecticut

10. Delaware.

New York scored the lowest, 2.2 out of 5 stars, and Delaware had 2.8 out of 5 stars.

Takeaway

The U.S. provides compelling data concerning healthcare inequalities across the country, and assessing these discrepancies for equal healthcare treatment is essential. Regardless of where patients live, American citizens must have access to good quality care comparable to all other states.

Pinellas County Schools and Pinellas Education Foundation to Partner with TB12 Foundation

[ad_1]

“Joining forces with Pinellas County Schools to teach students and young athletes how to live a healthy lifestyle and perform at their best is what the TB12 Foundation is all about,” said Alex Guerrero, TB12 Co-Founder.

Drawing on a shared commitment to innovation and student achievement, Pinellas County Schools (PCS) and the Pinellas Education Foundation have entered into a partnership agreement with TB12 and the TB12 Foundation to launch a curriculum redesign that aims to enhance the district’s health and wellness curriculum for students in middle school and high school. Leveraging core principles of the TB12 Method, a series of daily healthy habits developed by Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and his TB12 co-founder, and longtime Body Coach Alex Guerrero, the first-in-the-nation PCS curriculum will include TB12 resource materials and hands-on, inclusive activities, embedding the five distinct TB12 pillars: Pliability, Movement, Nutrition, Hydration and Mental Fitness. The enhanced curriculum will be initiated as a pilot this fall at six middle schools and four high schools. Certified TB12 Body Coaches are collaborating on the courseware development and will also be directly involved with training for PCS physical education instructors, athletic coaches, and administrators. Following a successful pilot program, the revised curriculum is scheduled to roll out to every middle school and high school by the 2023-24 school year.

“This will be a student experience like no other,” said Pinellas County School Superintendent Kevin Hendrick. “This is a unique partnership that will allow both our teachers and students to learn from the best in the health and wellness sector. We are grateful to the TB12 Foundation for launching this program right here in Pinellas County Schools and to the Pinellas Education Foundation for bringing another first-of-its-kind partnership to our district.”

“Joining forces with Pinellas County Schools to teach students and young athletes how to live a healthy lifestyle and perform at their best is what the TB12 Foundation is all about,” said Alex Guerrero, TB12 Co-Founder. “Incorporating daily healthy habits at a young age is so important and we are excited about the opportunity to implement this innovative program in the Tampa area.”

“We are thrilled to be able to support this unique opportunity for Pinellas County Schools students and teachers,” added Stacy Baier, CEO of the Pinellas Education Foundation. “As a partner to the district, we have piloted a number of successful programs which were later scaled to serve students throughout the county and state.”

The relationship between Pinellas County Schools and TB12 was originally spearheaded by Ben Wieder, a local business executive and longtime member of the Pinellas Education Foundation’s Board of Directors. Wieder, who follows a consistent dietary and exercise regimen himself, says he became familiar with the TB12 Method through Brady’s podcasts. His work with the Foundation led him to wonder if students and young athletes might benefit, too.

“Most wellness programs highlight a few quick fixes in the hopes of achieving a healthy lifestyle,” said Wieder, president of Clearwater-based marketing firm Level 6. “TB12 teaches you a sustainable lifestyle that aims to keep you healthy. When combined with a positive mindset, a lifetime of wellness is within reach. I’m proud to play a role in bringing this kind of wellness education to our students.”

The TB12 holistic approach to health and wellness is comprised of 5 principles, including the importance of muscle pliability, balance and moderation for healthy nutrition, proper hydration, as well as mental fitness. Research has long indicated the correlation between health and wellness and academic success.

Ashley Grimes, Pinellas County Schools PreK-12 Health and Physical Education Specialist, added “This project is an incredible opportunity to impact the whole child. There is a myriad of research to support the positive effect that exercise has on academic achievement, mental health and social connectedness. The standards-based curriculum enhancements will allow our students to take a hands-on approach to their wellness and empower all students to become physically literate individuals by developing the knowledge, skills, confidence, and desire to be physically active throughout their lives. Students will assess their level of pliability, set goals and develop a plan to improve their level of wellness.”

“Pinellas County Schools is committed to innovation, both inside and outside the classroom, to ensure our students are competitive with their peers throughout the nation, and our district remains a leader in public education,” added Hendrick. “I’d like to thank our School Board members for supporting this pilot program, and for their commitment to pursuing partnerships that enhance the student experience and promote student achievement.”

“We are grateful to our visionary partners,” said Baier. “We are particularly fortunate to have an engaged Foundation Board with talented community and corporate leaders who truly care about our mission to advance student achievement. This project reflects the values our Foundation embraces, including innovation—serving as a catalyst that activates new solutions to some of education’s most pressing issues.”

VPL Expands Markets to Support More of the Healthcare Industry

[ad_1]

vpl logo

VPL Logo

“Cost control and visibility are critical for all of healthcare when it comes to freight management. We built our platform with technology so that customers can take back ownership of and have access to their own data, which has been intentionally obscured until this point.”

VPL, an industry leader in smart supply chain software for healthcare clients, is expanding to bring supply chain visibility and cost savings to critical access and non-acute facilities including ambulatory surgery centers.

The team has grown by 20 percent already this year and is planning for continued growth over the next few months to support this expansion, along with continued emergence into the pharmacy space. This past March, the company announced the launch of VPL TrajectRx, which ensures specialty drugs are delivered cost-effectively and securely.

“Cost control and visibility are critical for all of healthcare when it comes to freight management. We built our platform with technology so that customers can take back ownership of and have access to their own data, which has been intentionally obscured until this point,” says Eric McGlade, CEO and Co-Founder at VPL. “Our technology empowers clients by unlocking the data and actionable insights needed to solve for or plan around supply chain disruptions.”

Recently, VPL has added a number of standalone hospitals to its client list, including Edgerton Hospital, Excelsior Springs, Prairie Ridge Health, and St. Luke’s Community Healthcare in Kansas. With the recent release of TrajectRx, they’ve also added Mandell’s Pharmacy to their client list.

“We’ve spent a great deal of time supporting IDNs with our revolutionary smart supply chain platform—and we continue to do so—but we’ve also come to realize that critical access and non-acute facilities are underserved and struggling with the same challenges. And pharmacy is also feeling the complexity and lack of control when shipping prescriptions,” says McGlade. “Our team helps reduce costs while increasing visibility, which means smaller hospitals, surgery centers, and pharmacies can operate with the sophistication of these IDNs and truly build a more resilient supply chain.”

VPL’s smart supply chain software is a SaaS model that offers price transparency and enables visibility into freight management which, in turn, unlocks savings for hospitals of all sizes. Further, VPL’s unmatched data and analytics tools provide even greater ongoing savings opportunities.

In addition to actively pursuing opportunities with critical access and non-acute facilities and pharmacy, VPL continues to add larger hospitals and IDNs to its list of clients.

VPL will be hosting a series of virtual events showcasing the key differences between their smart supply chain platform and traditional freight programs. For more information, visit http://www.getvpl.com/our-resources and follow us on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com/company/getvpl.

About VPL

By making the procurement-through-fulfillment processes smarter and more profitable, VPL is creating a new supplier dynamic whereby customers benefit from reduced costs, better insights, and increased transparency and efficiency. The industry’s only Smart Supply Chain Platform automates inbound and outbound shipping, unlocks visibility into the status of critical shipments, and identifies cost-savings opportunities for all of healthcare including IDNs, critical access, outpatient, and pharmacy. With more than 700 hospitals, 6,000+ suppliers, and a 97% customer retention rate, it’s clear that VPL is the company the healthcare industry trusts to deliver savings, insights, and peace of mind.

Some of the key highlights at Microbiology Virtual Week 2022 include five well-renowned keynote speakers headlining the virtual stage:

  • Josef Neu, M.D., Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology, University of Florida: AI and Multi-Omics in Perinatal Period.
  • Daniel Griffin, M.D., PhD, Chief, Division of Infectious Disease – ProHEALTH, an OPTUM Company, Clinical Instructor of Medicine – Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Department of Medicine-Division of Infectious Diseases: The Importance of Timing: Managing COVID-19 (with live Q&A).
  • Kate L. Jeffrey, PhD, Executive Director, Moderna Therapeutics: Functional Consequences of the Human Enteric Virome (with live Q&A).
  • Francisco Veas, PhD, Research Director and Professor, Montpellier University: An Ultrasensitive Detection of Respiratory Viruses Upon an Apoh-Viral Enrichment from Non-Invasive and Self-Collectable Mouth Washing Sampling (with live Q&A).
  • Jonathan Abraham, M.D., PhD, Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School, Associate Physician in Infectious Diseases, Brigham & Women’s Hospital: Lipoprotein Receptors are Evolutionarily Conserved Cellular Receptors for Divergent Alphaviruses (with Live Q&A).

Dr. Daniel Griffin, Chief, Division of Infectious Disease – ProHEALTH, an OPTUM Company, Clinical Instructor of Medicine – Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Department of Medicine-Division of Infectious Diseases said, “the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded many and for the first-time informed others of how devastating a microscopic life form can be to our way of life. Despite the advanced technologies and many preparations, this virus has killed millions and has transformed our society. The triumphs and ultimately our ability to move forward are a testament to the power of science in the form of vaccines and therapeutics. While we continue to make advances, the biggest challenge remains as always – educating physicians and patients about how to best use these powerful tools.”

Dr. Kate L. Jeffrey, Executive Director, Moderna Therapeutics commented, “although the microbiome is established as an important regulator of health and disease, the role of prokaryotic and eukaryotic viruses that inhabit asymptomatic humans (collectively, the virome) is less defined. Sequencing efforts have shown clear perturbations in the virome in a range of diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To move beyond correlations, we tested if the virome, akin to the microbiome, autonomously contributes to human health, and when perturbed if it triggers inflammation and provokes disease. Our work provides a missing functional link that our collective virome – that is established from birth, shaped through life and includes vast numbers of known viruses and copious ‘dark matter’ we cannot yet identify – is an important contributor to human health, but when perturbed does provoke inflammation in IBD and conceivably many other diseases.”

Dr. Francisco Veas, Professor, Research Director and Professor, Montpellier University Departments of Microbiology and Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai stated, “the evolution of the planetary situation is knowing multiple rapid and severe complications impacting all the aspects of life. These changes include, severe climate change, very large losses of biodiversity (respectively 70%, 80% 50% of vertebrates, insects and birds disappeared in less than 40 years, and all the rest being in accelerated extinction way), and disappearance natural habitats (wetlands, mangroves, glaciers, polar ice caps, rivers, lakes, etc.), forests. All these aspects are correlated with the increase of an uncontrolled human demography (8 billion humans this year compared with 1.5 billion in 1900) of consumers (new synonym of human), mainly since the half of the XX century due to the use of antibiotics, mass vaccination and new therapies. This has created a paradox that implies that medicine, while providing a longer life in a better health, indirectly contributes to the acceleration of the destruction of our habitat. These environmental changes induce higher concentrations of zoonotic host of pathogens outside of their historical large endemic areas, non-visited by humans, where they were previously ‘diluted’ (eg.: SARS-CoV-2, Monkeypox virus, Lyme disease, etc.). To provide a high-quality public health to protect populations against (re)-emerging diseases in this context, there are two related main mandatory actions to be considered under a One Health approach: (i) new creative measures to urgently reverse the environmental and demographic tragedies mentioned above, but also (ii) carry out classic public health counter-measures, by developing (preparedness) more efficient methods allowing a better surveillance with ultra-sensitive and ultra-rapid detection of circulating pathogens to adopt the earliest optimized therapeutic or vaccine for individual and epidemic management/containment. The Labroots platform is an excellent way not only to share these new integrative ways to think ‘health and health of the planet,’ but also to propose complementary technologies that could meet unmet medical needs.”

The scientific program explores informative sessions such as host immune response to bacterial pathogens, innate immunity, viral replication, antimicrobial resistance and novel antimicrobial strategies, point of care diagnostics – lessons from COVD-19 testing, genomics of viruses, emerging and re-emerging respiratory viruses, the microbiome in women’s health, the microbiome in cancer risk and treatment, viromes and bacteriophages, genomic epidemiology and pandemic preparedness, and so much more.

“Labroots established this virtual event 10 years ago to draw attention to the disciplines of Microbiology bringing the scientific community together to learn cutting-edge discoveries and innovative technologies,” added Greg Cruikshank, Chief Executive Officer of Labroots. “Furthering our commitment, Microbiology Virtual Week has been the go-to conference, providing an unmatched platform for leading experts to exchange ideas in the fields of immunology, microbiology and cancer research at this educational forum.”

Advanced Medical Integration (AMI), the nation’s leading medical integration consulting group, announced it has been selected for Inc. 5000’s annual list for the fifth year in a row. The list represents a unique look at the United States’ fastest growing, most lucrative private companies within the nation’s economy. Placing in the reputable magazine’s “Health Service” category, AMI’s approach to responsible pain management has garnered the attention of medical clinics across the country.

“We’re honored to have received this recognition for the fifth year in a row,” says Mike Carberry, AMI’s Founder and Vice President of Professional Relations. “AMI has so much to offer when it comes to healthcare and we’ve built a culture that believes in the value of allowing the body to holistically heal without the use of prescription drugs. Being named to Inc. 5000 is a testament to the achievements of our clients, staff and the value of our approach to medicine.”

Since 2013, AMI has integrated over 600 clinics across the nation, creating the future for responsible healthcare. They’re committed to helping medical professionals save lives while also providing revenue-generating consultation. In 2021 alone, AMI has helped its clients generate over $74 million and is on track to beat this number for 2022. “The growth we’ve seen with our clients is extremely exciting,” says Coleen Carberry, President and Co-Founder of AMI. “Making the Inc 5000 list is a reflection of how the success of our clients is not only our success, but a reflection on the number of patients our doctors help each day.”

AMI shares this prestige with companies such as Intuit, Zappos, Under Armour, Microsoft, Patigonia, and several other global brands who have gained recognition as Inc. 5000 honorees.

“The accomplishment of building one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S., in light of recent economic roadblocks, cannot be overstated,” says Scott Omelianuk, Editor-in-Chief of Inc. “Inc. is thrilled to honor the companies that have established themselves through innovation, hard work, and rising to the challenges of today.”

Methodology

Companies on the 2022 Inc. 5000 are ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2018 to 2021. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2018. They must be U.S.-based, privately held, for-profit, and independent–not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies–as of December 31, 2021. (Since then, some on the list may have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2018 is $100,000; the minimum for 2021 is $2 million. AMI is celebrating its fifth consecutive year on the list.

“SameSky Health works diligently every day to help our health plan partners to drive health equity,” said Abner Mason, Founder and CEO of SameSky Health. “We’re honored to be a part of the AWS Healthcare Accelerator.”

SameSky Health announced its selection to participate in the AWS Healthcare Accelerator for Health Equity. The Accelerator is a technical, business, and mentorship program for early-stage companies who seek to use AWS to increase access to health services, reduce health disparities by addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH), and/or use data in the promotion of equitable and inclusive systems of care.

Participation in the program will further the efforts of SameSky Health to support health plans as they seek to advance health equity, and address health disparities among traditionally underserved member populations. SameSky Health was one of just ten companies chosen to participate in the program, which includes a four-week AWS Healthcare Accelerator curriculum, as well as AWS training and support, among other benefits.

Earlier this year, SameSky Health launched CultureGuide™, a health equity-focused consumer engagement solution. CultureGuide helps plans guide members on their annual wellness journeys. AdventHealth Nurse Leaders Appointed to Florida Center for Nursing Board of Directors

[ad_1]

Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced the appointment of Dr. Robin McGuinness, Senior Executive Officer and Chief Nurse Executive of AdventHealth West Florida Division and Kristina Cloversettle, an AdventHealth Dade City Nurse Manager to the Florida Center for Nursing Board of Directors. The board consists of a total of 16 members, with a simple majority of the board being nurse representatives of various practice areas.

“I am honored to be chosen by the governor to work alongside key leaders across the state of Florida to understand the current nursing workforce obstacles and develop strategies to best support the needs of providers across our state,” said Dr. Robin McGuinness, Chief Nurse Executive, AdventHealth West Florida Division. “I’ve spent four decades as a nurse with a majority of that time working in the ICU. The past few years have been some of the most challenging for our nurses and teams and I look forward to putting ideas into action to ensure our caregivers at the bedside are supported as they continue to provide vital and necessary care to the communities we serve.”

McGuinness spearheads clinical nursing excellence for the West Florida division, including creating strategic nursing school partnerships to support and recruit Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses and implementing virtual nursing pre-pandemic to deliver new care models at the bedside. She also leads clinicians through the rigorous process of achieving the highest possible scores in patient safety through the prestigious Leapfrog Patient Safety Group. McGuinness also provided clinical leadership for all AdventHealth West Florida hospitals during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

McGuinness serves on the Board of Trustees at Saint Leo University and is a member of the Nursing Advisory Council for Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Tampa’s College of Nursing. McGuinness earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Hartford, and her doctorate in nursing from Florida State University.

Joining McGuinness in the appointment to the Florida Center for Nursing Board of Directors is AdventHealth Dade City nurse manager Kristina Cloversettle. She became an assistant nurse manager in 2020 and nurse manager of her unit in 2022.

“I am so grateful to be appointed to the board. As a nurse manager, I’ve learned accountability processes must be in place with evidence-based practice models, to ensure that our nurses deliver quality, effective and compassionate care for our community,” said Cloversettle. “I hope to bring my passion for both education and nursing to the Florida Center for Nursing Board of Directors seat and hope to create lifelong learning incentives to keep the workforce strong.”

Cloversettle is a former Pasco County teacher and former board member of the Arts in Motion Youth Theatre, Inc. Cloversettle earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing and psychology from the University of South Florida.
