NBEC & Cortavo Logo JPEG

The Cortavo team is honored to work with organizations like NBEC, whose mission seeks to improve quality-of-life outcomes for disadvantaged Black communities. – Tiffany Bloomer, President of Cortavo

The National Birth Equity Collaborative (NBEC) has embarked on a partnership with the Atlanta-based managed IT service provider Cortavo for its managed IT solutions. Cortavo was founded to help small to mid-sized businesses by providing complete and affordable IT solutions. Their mission is to remove the complexity of business IT and provide everything businesses need to be successful, from cybersecurity, unlimited service desk support, hybrid workplace solutions, office connectivity, cloud data storage, hardware and software. Cortavo’s all-inclusive IT plans and support are designed to scale with businesses as they grow.

“As the world becomes increasingly virtual, NBEC’s leaders felt the need to engage business technology experts that can assist us in keeping up with this rapidly changing society,” said Shani Hunter, Chief of Staff for the National Birth Equity Collaborative. “Cortavo is an award-winning, industry-recognized company that is ahead of the curve. It is only natural that NBEC utilizes its services to assist us in supporting Black women, Black birthing people and their villages as we focus on advocacy transnationally.”

NBEC is one of the nation’s leading experts in, and an advocate for, change in the Black maternal health and infant mortality crises. As an organization focused on the sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing of Black women and birthing people world-wide, NBEC creates transnational solutions that optimize Black maternal, infant, sexual and reproductive wellbeing.

Established in 2015 by Founder and President Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, NBEC was created to combat the increasing rate of infant mortality within the most marginalized populations. Recognizing that ensuring better care for Black babies had to start with better care for Black mamas, NBEC expanded its mission to focus more on the mother’s experience along with baby’s in hopes of creating safe and healthy conditions for both moms and their babies. Our vision is that all Black mothers, their babies and their villages thrive.

“The Cortavo team is honored to work with organizations like NBEC, whose mission seeks to improve quality-of-life outcomes for disadvantaged Black communities,” said Tiffany Bloomer, President of Cortavo. “NBEC is a growing organization facing an outpour of public interest in their mission, coupled with their commendable social goals.”

Tiffany acknowledged that growth was a common challenge faced by many of the businesses that rely on Cortavo’s managed IT service.

“Growth is a good problem to have. And as NBEC faces it head-on, Cortavo is here to help them scale efficiently as they rapidly expand to meet the challenges of their mission. Reliable IT infrastructure, managed IT services and unlimited service desk support will position NBEC for great success and keep them on that path for many years to come.”

New WorldCat.org connects genealogy enthusiasts, educators, and historians to the world’s libraries

[ad_1]

For genealogy enthusiasts, educators, and historians, the new WorldCat.org offers an improved experience to uncover family lineages and investigate historical events. By exploring the billions of library resources from more than 10,000 libraries worldwide represented on WorldCat.org, users can find an unparalleled pool of genealogical information.

“Genealogy research provides powerful and meaningful points of access into self-awareness and discovery of the world around us,” said Skip Prichard, President and CEO of OCLC, a global library nonprofit that’s been an innovator in library technology and research for more than 50 years. “WorldCat.org makes visible one of the most important research tools—the world’s libraries—making it a go-to source for detailed genealogical research.”

As more and more hobbyists and professionals alike seek to learn about the stories that precede and interweave with their own, WorldCat.org has a breadth and depth of information that can’t be found anywhere else online. Through WorldCat.org, people can identify a variety of source materials in libraries around the world, including:

  • Newspapers
  • Photographs
  • Family Bibles, church histories, and records
  • Cemetery and burial records
  • Military records
  • Town histories and probate records
  • General genealogical resources, such as directories, handbooks, and magazines
  • Slavery and antislavery materials, including slave records
  • Indexes of births, marriages, deaths, wills, and obituaries
  • Microfilmed genealogy and local history collections

FamilySearch has been working with OCLC to not only expand access to FamilySearch’s vast catalog of genealogically rich records from all over the globe, but to introduce FamilySearch patrons to WorldCat.org’s vast offerings online.

FamilySearch.org users taking full advantage of all the resources of WorldCat.org may find many additional resources to enlighten their understanding of their ancestors. Many of these records tell the story of their lives between their birth and death. This is a valued, ongoing relationship with OCLC, and we will certainly encourage everyone from novices to experienced researchers to explore the depths of WorldCat.org’s resources,” said David E. Rencher, chief genealogy officer, FamilySearch International.

WorldCat.org is a unique tool for users to research heritage and complements genealogy tools such as FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, and other genealogy research tools.

“Libraries are often the only source for local information about births, deaths, marriages, businesses, and other family histories.

WorldCat.org can be the bridge to uncovering this valuable genealogy information,” concluded Prichard.

To start exploring and to sign up for a WorldCat.org account, visit the site at http://www.worldcat.org.

Protect Me With 3+ contest submissions now open for NJ middle, high school students to raise vaccine awareness

[ad_1]

Participation is a critical component of teaching students to be good citizens and health messengers among peers and family.

Calling all New Jersey middle and high school students! This year’s Protect Me With 3+ vaccine awareness contest is now open for poster and video submissions through Jan. 20, 2023.

To stimulate creativity through health education, this year’s Create. Educate. Vaccinate. contest seeks to motivate students to create posters and videos illustrating the importance of getting vaccinated to achieve the highest level of community protection. The goal is to use the power of students’ creativity to raise awareness of the importance of vaccines in protecting New Jerseyans’ health and encourage more students and teachers to participate statewide.

“This year’s revitalized contest seeks to not only increase and diversify contest submissions but empower adolescents and educators to join in the fun to improve community health through vaccine awareness,” said Mariekarl Vilceus-Talty, MA, BSN, President & CEO of the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey (PMCH). “Participation is a critical component of teaching students to be good citizens and health messengers among peers and family.”

Students in grades 5–12 are encouraged to design an 8.5×11 poster (by hand or digitally) or create a :30 video for an opportunity to win a $50-$300 Visa gift card. Artwork must feature educational information about one of the following vaccines: COVID-19; Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap); Human Papillomavirus (HPV); Meningococcal ACWY; and Flu. Full details and examples of past winners’ artwork are available at protectmewith3.com.

Vaccines play a vital role in keeping New Jersey communities healthy. They are the safest and most effective tools to help prevent serious symptoms and complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccinations from birth through adulthood to provide a lifetime of protection against many diseases and infections.

“Vaccine-preventable diseases can affect anyone, regardless of age or health status, including healthy teens. Young and healthy people are not immune to serious illnesses,” said Dr. Christina Tan, New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) Assistant Commissioner and State Epidemiologist. “The best time to get vaccinated is before exposure to dangerous diseases. This contest helps inspire the next generation of artists and educators to contribute their creative talents to educate their communities.”

UC Davis Health’s Melissa Jost Earns 2022 Stoltenberg Future Fund Health IT Leadership Scholarship

[ad_1]

“My true passion is to use my background in EHR development and implementation, clinician wellbeing, and healthcare operations to advance the care we provide through our nation’s healthcare systems,” Jost said.

Stoltenberg Consulting Inc., a leading healthcare IT consulting firm, today named Melissa Jost, who serves as both the Director of Informatics and Director of Clinician Health and Wellbeing at UC Davis Health, as the recipient of the 2022 Stoltenberg Future Fund Scholarship for College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) education.

The Stoltenberg Future Fund awards scholarships annually through the CHIME Education Foundation for recipient use at any of CHIME’s events, including the Healthcare CIO Boot Camp, CISO Boot Camp, Clinical Informatics Boot Camp, Fall CIO Forum and ViVE Conference. By supporting emerging health IT leaders, the scholarship channels industry-leading best practices for digital health advancement and interoperability into hospitals and health systems, enabling them to optimize IT systems for cross continuum care alignment. Scholarship demand has risen as pandemic recovery financial concerns have forced many hospital IT departments to cut funding for user group meetings, conferences and continuing education opportunities.

“CHIME has provided valuable mentorship and connections with leaders around the nation facing similar challenges, who I frequently rely on to develop new ideas and share lessons learned. The CHIME community has taught me not only how to address the challenges of health IT usability, adoption, and change management, but also how to become a better clinical informatics leader,” Jost said. “The gracious gift from Stoltenberg Consulting will allow me to further develop my leadership skills through CHIME to prepare for future leadership positions with UC Davis Health.”

As the inaugural Director of Clinical Informatics at UC Davis Health, Jost piloted and led the nationally-recognized Practice Experience Program (PEP) to reduce EHR burden and boost physician efficiency and satisfaction. Focusing on individually tailored EHR training, system optimization and workflow redesign, Jost deployed the PEP to over 1,800 physician faculty, residents and fellows, reducing physician time spent working after hours. She also oversaw the creation of a MyChart Message Response Team consisting of RNs, which manages 23,000 Primary Care messages per month across the UC Davis Health enterprise—improving turnaround time with 97% of messages being handled within 48 hours and reducing messages requiring physician intervention by 70%. Directly addressing the qualified IT staffing shortage plaguing healthcare, she also guided the creation of the Clinical Informatics Externship Program to provide a more diverse candidate pipeline into clinical informatics and health IT positions.

Prior to her current role, she served as a Senior Clinical Applications Analyst and Clinical Applications Project Manager at UC Davis Health, where she managed Epic implementation initiatives across all phases for revenue cycle, OR, anesthesia, patient access, radiology and referrals. She received the UC Davis Health Employee Excellence Team Award in 2020 and the STAR Award in 2019, along with the 2020 Josie King Hero Award. Jost plans to utilize the Stoltenberg Future Fund Scholarship toward her CHIME22 Fall Forum attendance in San Antonio.

Stoltenberg Consulting committed to hosting the annual CHIME Education Foundation scholarship over a span of 25 years. Jost is the 13th scholarship recipient of the Stoltenberg Future Fund program since its inception in 2009. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be CHIME members in good standing, express need for financial support for continuing education and describe their professional accomplishments and aspirations in the healthcare IT industry. Previous recipients include IT leaders from Ascension Saint Thomas, Dayton Children’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, UNC Health Care, Brooke Army Medical Center, UPMC Chautauqua and Jackson Health System.

FitOn Health Launches Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults

[ad_1]

News Image

FitOn, the No. 1 fitness app and digital health & wellness platform, today announced the launch of its Fall Prevention series on its FitOn Health platform for employers and health plans. Geared to help older adults take action to prevent falls from happening, this is the latest health course available for those looking to lead a healthier lifestyle without the need for expensive equipment or treatments.

Led by renowned fitness trainer and fall prevention specialist, David Jack, the program focuses on the necessary steps to avoid falls. This includes fall-proofing a home, learning balance and strength exercises and avoiding common mistakes that leave people vulnerable to falling. The course helps people to assess their risks, remove dangers inside and out of the home, overcome the stigma associated with falling and receive the support they need to enjoy life.

Every year, three million adults over 65 years old are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries that cost up to $50 billion in medical expenses annually, with 3/4 paid by Medicare and Medicaid. While not all falls are preventable, it is estimated that 20–30% of falls can be prevented by assessing risks and intervening to reduce these risks.

“Over 800,000 people are hospitalized annually due to falling and receiving a head injury or hip fracture. Such injuries can be costly to both patients and health insurers and a fear of falling begins to develop,” said Lindsay Cook, Founder and CEO of FitOn. “This fall prevention course empowers people to overcome this fear by assessing the risk, building up strength through functional exercises and taking steps to ensure their home is fall-proof. This course will also help members caring for aging parents by providing education and tips on how they can better communicate and mitigate fall related issues with aging loved ones”.

“Falls can lead to injuries, broken bones or even death and the fear of falling may cause a person to be less active in their everyday activities. In turn, they become weaker and their chances of falling increase,” says David Jack, course trainer of FitOn Health’s Fall Prevention program. “This course was developed with FitOn Health to focus on identifying a preventive process to help revive your body and significantly reduce the likelihood of falling.”

The expansion of FitOn Health’s course offerings comes off the heels of FitOn’s recent Peerfit acquisition earlier this year, which provides fitness and wellness benefits to employers and members nationwide through its deep relationship with leading health providers. Working in close partnership with its health plan partners, FitOn Health has introduced a range of care management courses on topics that address key areas of focus for plan members.

“Fall prevention is a big risk for individuals as they age and this program is an excellent resource to help seniors make changes to make their homes and keep themselves safe,” says Steven Selinsky, Vice President of Government Programs, Product, & Community Outreach for HAP, a current client that offers health insurance plans for individuals, families, employer groups and Medicare and Medicaid members. “Courses like this one from FitOn Health are great because they are easily accessible, can be watched at the member’s convenience, have very useful content from industry experts and can be shared with caregivers. The FitOn platform along with the benefits Peerfit provides helps individuals have access to information, platforms and resources to meet their health and wellness needs and live an active lifestyle.”

The Fall Prevention course includes 13 lessons and is immediately available to anyone with access to FitOn Health through their health plan or employer.

Labrador Systems Announces First Business Customers of its Award-Winning Personal Assistive Robots

[ad_1]

“The burden on caregivers is growing at a rate that is simply not sustainable. Organizations are already experiencing major caregiver shortages, and in the coming years there will be significantly more people 85+ with fewer people to help take care of them,” Mike Dooley, CEO of Labrador Systems.

Labrador Systems today announced the first reservations for the initial production of its assistive robots from several leading organizations in home care and senior living. First announced in January at CES 2022, the award-winning Labrador® Retriever personal robot empowers people to live more independently and extends the impact of caregivers. The assistive robot lightens the load of daily activities by physically bringing essential items within reach. Labrador will offer home care and senior living organizations a professional grade version of the robot, the “Retriever Pro,” with additional features to help caregivers and staff manage client care.

Labrador will make the Retriever Pro available as a service, creating fleets of robots for care providers to deploy to support individuals in a variety of settings. Organizations set to receive the first deliveries of the Retriever Pro include: On Lok PACE, Nationwide Insurance, Masonic Homes of California, Western Homes Communities, Eskaton, The Perfect Companion, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, University of Michigan Flint, and Graceworks Lutheran Services.

The Retriever is the first autonomous robot of its kind to be deployed in homes at this scale to physically assist individuals with a range of daily activities.

The reservations follow Labrador’s groundbreaking series of pilot studies, where the company’s personal assistive robots were successfully deployed in the homes of a diverse mix of individuals with different needs and conditions. A video with testimonials from the initial pilot users is viewable at https://youtu.be/aTOyXBr9VyU.

“Our partnership with Labrador during the pilot enabled Nationwide to observe firsthand the impact the Retriever can have on individuals’ daily lives,” said Bobbi Jo Allan, Nationwide’s Vice President of Innovation. “As champions for helping people live as independently as possible, we’re excited at the prospect of continuing to learn alongside Labrador Systems about how best to support independent living. We look forward to deploying our own small number of robots to focus even more deeply on innovative ways we can provide value to our customers.”

“Labrador is at the forefront of creating an entirely new category of assistive robots.” added Micah Fening, Innovation Director at Nationwide. “We haven’t seen any other personal robot for the home with the Retriever’s capabilities.”

The Retriever Pro is designed to assist individuals where pain, injury or other health conditions impact their daily activities. It is large enough to carry items such as a laundry basket but agile enough to navigate the tight spaces of a home. The Retriever Pro also features an innovative retrieval and delivery system to bring items within reach, enabling caregivers to set up items for delivery when they are not present. Caregivers and users can easily command the Retriever Pro using their smartphone or with their voice through an Alexa-enabled device.

“The burden on caregivers is growing at a rate that is simply not sustainable. Organizations are already experiencing major caregiver shortages, and in the coming years there will be significantly more people in my parents’ age group (85+) with fewer people to help take care of them,” said Mike Dooley, CEO of Labrador Systems. “Our mission is to provide relief on both sides of that equation, empowering individuals who need care to do more on their own while extending the impact of each caregiver’s visit well beyond the time they are physically present.”

Labrador Charter Customers

To validate the product and gather feedback on the Retriever, Labrador worked with a range of organizations to place pilot robots into homes for real-world testing.

One such organization, On Lok, was founded 50 years ago in San Francisco as a nonprofit to empower older adults to age with dignity and independence. The organization pioneered PACE, the Medicare- and Medicaid-funded Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, which enables nursing home-eligible seniors to continue to live in their home and receive care and support in their own community.

“On Lok is excited to be one of the first healthcare organizations to bring the Retriever Pro into homes and continue to pioneer the future of care,” said Michael Webb, Chief Technology Officer at On Lok. “We are continuously looking for opportunities to enhance the support we provide to seniors and provide excellent quality of care to help them age with dignity. Labrador offers unique new ways to help us do this, and support our On Lok PACE participants, as well as assist our caregivers.”

Labrador’s pilots included tests and site visits with senior living communities, such as Masonic Homes of California, established in 1898.

“Our on-campus test of Labrador robots created quite an impression, generating excitement among our community,” said James MacRae, Innovation Project Manager of Masonic Homes CA. “We are eager to deploy our own fleet of Labrador Retriever Pros because it supports our mission to provide best-in-class experiences for our residents while allowing our caregivers to deliver high-touch personal care.”

With the announcement of the reservations for the Retriever Pro, the company also continues to move forward with development and testing of the standard version of the Retriever announced earlier this year.
