I want readers to take away that love is held from within, and that is so important to love and put yourself first.

Alana Phillips knows firsthand change is a scary thing. Written in journal format, and with poetry included, Phillips’ memoir “Orchid Moon” (published by Archway Publishing) shares the story of the author’s journey to finding herself.

“Orchid Moon” tells her story through emotions, written in a collection of poetry and journal entries. It is deep, and at some points very dark, but it demonstrates how the most important part of healing involves going to the depths and back again.

“I want readers to take away that love is held from within, and that is so important to love and put yourself first,” Phillips says. “No matter how hard or heartbreaking that may be, always do what is right for you. Only you know what that is.”

An excerpt from “Orchid Moon” reads:

To want me is to hurt me. / My mind takes reign over my soul, / telling lies with no mercy. / Break my heart, / I had a feeling you would try. / I’d rather do it myself, / but where lies my peace of mind? / I feel safe when I hide, / plastic flowers can’t die.
