“As a market leader in the production of sterile custom surgical kits, CHS is an ideal addition to Northfield’s non-sterile kitting and PPE operations,” said Carter Smith, COO and Managing Partner of Northfield.

Northfield Medical Manufacturing, LLC (“Northfield”), a medical manufacturing and distribution company based in Norfolk, VA, announced today the acquisition of Richmond-based Custom Healthcare Systems, Inc. (“CHS”), a manufacturer of custom sterile surgical kits and procedural trays for health care distributors and end-user facilities. Northfield will fully merge its operations with the operations of CHS. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
CHS is an FDA-registered assembler and manufacturer of Class I and II medical devices and operates an ISO 8 / Class 100,000-equivalent cleanroom, primarily for the assembly of surgical kits and procedure trays. The acquisition of CHS provides Northfield with a strategic healthcare manufacturing partner, including the industry expertise of its co-owners, Henry Berling and Roger Kube.
Founded in 2003, Northfield has a long track record of providing innovative infection control solutions to protect front-line workers. This transaction will further that mission, as Northfield plans to maintain both Virginia-based kitting operations, and to leverage the combined supply chains to expand the company’s PPE and infection control offerings.
“As a market leader in the production of sterile custom surgical kits, CHS is an ideal addition to Northfield’s non-sterile kitting and PPE operations,” said Carter Smith, COO and Managing Partner of Northfield. “This acquisition expands our customer base, bolsters our supply chain and provides us with a solid platform for additional acquisitions,” added Northfield CFO and Managing Partner Owen Griffin.
CHS Co-Owner Henry Berling, former senior executive and board member of Richmond-based Owens and Minor, commented, “Our merger agreement with Northfield is both a strategic and operational fit. CHS customers and employees are in good hands.” Roger Kube added, “We are excited to combine two innovative organizations to expand surgical tray and infection control solutions for healthcare workers and their patients.”
