Brendan Henderson, M.D., a Yale-trained and board-certified internal medicine physician, founded Modern Internal Medicine, LLC to provide outstanding access to high quality and affordable primary care. Through the Direct Primary Care model, the practice seeks to break down the major barriers to high quality health care: cost and inaccessibility. The result is a primary care experience reminiscent of the good old days when your doctor was afforded the time to listen to your concerns, got to know you as a person, and even made house calls. Founded in 2018, Modern Internal Medicine celebrated an official Ribbon Cutting in December 2019.
Modern Internal Medicine removes the barriers to accessing the doctor by returning all messages promptly, usually within the hour. Dr. Henderson offers same/next day access for appointments, home/worksite visits, and the appointments are relaxed and conversational – much like they used to be.
At the same time, the practice offers a modern, holistic approach employing modern therapies and lifestyle coaching designed to enhance wellness through better daily habits. Additionally, the option to discuss medical issues over email, phone, or video saves patients time and money otherwise spent traveling to and waiting in the doctor’s office. For in-office appointments, Dr. Henderson promises little to no waiting room time.
With nearly 1000 Direct Primary Care clinics nationwide, this model has gained traction. Forbes magazine has published multiple articles extolling both the health and financial benefits of the model.
Rather than accepting insurance co-pays, Direct Primary Care clinics like Modern Internal Medicine assess monthly membership dues starting as low as $49. This provides up to ten patient encounters per year, free annual labs, and access to many other services and money-saving discounts. Direct Primary Care encourages patients to seek medical care early and often which has been shown to prevent high cost encounters including: emergency room visits, hospital stays, specialty referrals, and imaging studies.
Modern Internal Medicine breaks down the cost barrier by providing wholesale discounts to save patients money including: lab panels for about 20 dollars (retail $150,) medications for as low as $2 a month, and access to highly discounted CTs and MRIs. Often these prices are lower than those available through insurance, though patients still have the option to submit these items through insurance when needed. The cost savings are most pronounced for those paying for health care out-of-pocket: deductible to meet for insurance, medical sharing plans, and the uninsured.
In short, by eliminating the bureaucracy and paperwork associated with insurance, Direct Primary Care physicians, such as Dr. Henderson at Modern Internal Medicine, spend more time listening to and caring for patients and respond more quickly and more appropriately to patients’ needs – just like in the good old days. And they do so at a fraction of the cost as compared to the traditional insurance model.
Dr. Henderson works closely with his Wellness Partners on-site including: Emily Henderson of Elegance Waxing and Spa, Michael Holda – Massage Therapist, and Joyce Kwamena-Poh – Natural Wellness Coach of Vibrant Life Self-Care Wellness.
