On July 13, during a globally broadcast online presentation of the NutraIngredients-USA Awards, the preeminent showcase for the nutrition and supplements industry, Asma Ishaq was awarded the distinction of NutraChampion 2020. Ishaq is the Chief Executive Officer of Modere, a category-leading, global, live-clean essential lifestyle brand of supplements, household, and personal care products.
Presented by NutraIngredients, the NutraChampion Award honors the nutraceutical industry’s biggest champions – thought leaders and innovators who leave a lasting impact on nutrition and the nutrition industry across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the US. Selected by a panel of independent expert judges, Ishaq was celebrated for her “important and lasting contribution to the industry and the wider causes of public health and nutrition”. The award celebrates “long-term and high-level personal achievements that have driven change within the science and business of [the] industry”.
“Asma Ishaq is a visionary leader of the natural products industry and a driver for the collagen market in particular,” commented Stephen Daniells, NutraIngredients-USA Editor-in-Chief. When Ishaq first appeared on the scene over twenty years ago, introducing collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA) supplements to the US market, the category was nearly nonexistent. It is now one of the fastest growing among nutritional supplements. Beginning in product development, formulation, and manufacturing, Ishaq also branched into ingredient supply before ultimately launching her own finished product company in 2009. Employing forward vertical integration, she brought her ingredient science expertise directly to the consumer in the form of high-performing, award-winning, science-backed products. Her contribution and direct-to-consumer business model helped forge the current billion-dollar global collagen market by educating the consumer on the significant benefits of collagen supplementation, establishing its credibility, and popularizing the emerging category. In the ensuing years, Ishaq has continued to innovate a robust, high-performing product line based on the groundbreaking, multi-patented nutraceutical Liquid BioCell®. She led her company to a successful acquisition by Modere in 2017, became Modere’s Chief Executive Officer in 2018, and has since expanded the company’s presence to 42 international markets.
“It is an honor of a lifetime to receive this recognition from NutraIngredients. I have long understood our obligation as an industry to set and maintain a high bar for excellence in everything we do to provide our consumers with the quality nutritional supplements and natural products they demand and deserve,” said Asma Ishaq, CEO of Modere. “I am very proud of the inroads my team and I have made to further the good work of the nutrition industry and to have helped establish collagen as the on-trend global ingredient it is today by creating real value for our customers with scientifically substantiated, high-performing products. I thank all of the many talented people who have helped make this achievement possible and look forward to continuing to win the trust of today’s consumers.”
“In addition to her success leading Modere, Asma generously supports a range of industry associations. Her tireless advocacy for the whole industry marks her as a NutraChampion. The NutraIngredients-USA Editorial Team is delighted to honor Asma Ishaq,” added Daniells.
Throughout her career, Ishaq has also been dedicated to setting new policies and maintaining high standards in business ethics and nutritional supplement manufacturing. Her contributions to the industry range from supply chain to research and development, intellectual property, ingredient supply, dietary supplement and cosmetic manufacturing, and bringing innovative formulas to market in multiple distribution channels.
Ishaq has served on several governing boards and associations including: Council for Responsible Nutrition, Fragrance Creators Association, Direct Selling Association (DSA), Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF), World Federation Direct Selling Association (WFDSA), Women’s Business Collaborative, Women Presidents Organization, and Committee of 200 (C200).
Projected to reach $6.5 billion by 2025, the global collagen market has grown so significantly, a new association has been created by the Trust Transparency Center to manage and steer its growth. In a nod to her considerable expertise and in tribute to her leadership, Ishaq was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Collagen Stewardship Alliance in March 2020.
