Leading e-Prescribing software vendor, MDToolbox, is focused on helping prescribers meet national and state electronic prescribing requirements. MDToolbox announced today that its e-Prescribing solution, MDToolbox-Rx, has received an updated certification from Surescripts that meets the National Council for Prescription Drug Program’s (NCPDP) SCRIPT Standard v2017071 for sending and receiving electronic prescription information.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires this new standard to be used by providers transmitting prescriptions electronically in the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Part D) program by January 1, 2020. However, many electronic health record vendors are struggling to meet this fast approaching deadline.
The upgrade to the new e-Prescribing standard brings exciting new features in MDToolbox-Rx that decrease the provider’s workload, increase patient safety, and improve prescription accuracy. These include:
- The ability to automatically include Narcotic Addiction DEA Number (NADEAN) or XDEA numbers with relevant controlled substance prescriptions.
- Automatic inclusion of patient drug allergies and vitals with prescriptions.
- Expansion of messaging types and additional messaging fields – physicians now have the ability to not only utilize cancel and change requests, but also follow-up renewals and fill notifications along with other comprehensive features.
- Increased character limit for directions, allowing for more thorough instructions for complicated prescriptions.
- Enhanced support for future fill requests – eliminating extra clicks and streamlining the ability to make multiple future fill requests.
Along with the national CMS deadline, MDToolbox is also helping prescribers meet their state e-Prescribing regulations. These state laws range from requiring Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) to requiring both controlled and non-controlled prescriptions be sent electronically. Several states already have laws in effect, while others’ deadlines are just around the corner. The following states have upcoming requirements beginning January 1st, 2020:
- Arizona
- Florida
- Iowa
- North Carolina
- Oklahoma
- Rhode Island

In addition to meeting state laws to transmit prescriptions electronically, MDToolbox also helps prescribers easily meet requirements to check their state Prescription Monitoring Programs (PMPs). Half of all US states have passed legislation requiring that the databases be checked before prescribing controlled substances in an effort to combat the opioid epidemic. MDToolbox offers the ability to integrate state PMP data directly into a prescribers’ e-Prescribing workflow. The feature allows prescribers to check a patient’s controlled substance prescription history in just one click, going directly to the patient’s record and eliminating the need to login separately and search for the patient. This convenient tool saves healthcare providers time, serves as a reminder to check their state PMP database, and makes it easy for providers to keep up with their state regulations.
“MDToolbox is committed to providing e-prescribing technology that is continually increasing prescription accuracy, patient safety, and provider efficiency,” stated Michael Conner, Director of Business Development at MDToolbox. “We are excited to be at the forefront of implementing the new SCRIPT standard as we make it a priority to stay ahead of the continuously changing regulations and standards so that our providers can focus on patient care.”
