Gracie Gym Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Opens Academy in Windham, Maine

Gracie Gym, founded by Crolin Gracie in Brazil, operates several locations worldwide.

The academy in Maine is owned by Michael Smith, a native of Portland, Maine where he grew up on Munjoy Hill. Michael started his Jiu-Jitsu journey in late 2015 and became the first white-to-black belt for Gracie Gym in the United States.

Michael opened his own Gracie Gym location in Dallas, Texas in 2017 and he is thrilled to finally bring Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to his own home state of Maine.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu really entered the hearts of Americans when they watched Royce Gracie win the first UFC Championship in 1993, where he put on a stunning display of grappling mechanics against larger opponents who were experts in other forms of combat.

Since then, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become the most dominant martial art combat sport in the world.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is designed for any individual who wants to learn self-defense, build confidence and have a new experience with exercise unlike any other. Gracie Gym Maine offers classes for adults and children ages 4 and older. Most students start as beginners who have never trained before and all foundational classes are designed to introduce the basic concepts.

In addition, Gracie Gym Maine will be a place for seasoned Jiu-Jitsu practitioners and high-level competitors to continue to refine their game. With a schedule full of classes starting at 6am and throughout the day, Gracie Gym Maine will have classes to accommodate anyone’s schedule.

The facility is over 7000 square feet and has over 3000 square feet of mat space, a weight room, and a recover lounge with infrared sauna and cold plunge.
