Fighting Covid-19 By Including Key Plant Fibers In Your Diet

Coronavirus: how to keep your gut microbiome healthy to fight COVID-19

As the U.S. struggles in its 6th month of fighting Covid-19, Americans are all too familiar with the daily routine for preventing the Coronavirus. Wear a mask, keep your distance, wash your hands. Prevention is the best tool for now. Noted physician, author and fiber advocate Dr. Denis Burkitt said it best in 1977, “How much better it is to prevent disease than to cure it.”

Part of the mystery of Covid-19 is how some people don’t become infected when exposed, while others catch it but handle it well, and still others suffer devastating health challenges from the virus. Scientists have seen some trends that may explain the different responses. The strength of an individual’s immune system seems to be a key factor.

Research over the past 25 years has established that “prebiotics” – dietary plant fibers – play an important role in supporting a robust immunity. In fact, 70% of your body’s immune system is in your gut and relies on plant fibers to maintain optimum immune health.

In a recent article in the academic publication “The Conversation” titled “Coronavirus: how to keep your gut microbiome healthy to fight COVID-19”, researcher Professor Tim Spector of King’s College in London recommended “eating a wide range of plant-based foods, which are high in fibre . . . fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains”.

Getting more plant fibers into your diet, especially prebiotic fibers preferred by your gut microbiome, can help strengthen your immune system. Which sounds simple, but the right plant fibers aren’t commonly eaten in the average American diet.

Beginning this month, Food First’s fiber rich MicroBiome Bars are available at all Sprouts Farmers Markets, in 362 stores throughout 23 states. When prebiotic fibers are taken daily, they can help the microbiome in your gut support a healthy immune response, which may help fight against viruses before they take hold.

Professor Spector said “As well as protecting yourself from the virus on the outside, you can also build up your defences from the inside by strengthening your immune system.”
