FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dr. Murphy once again recognized for his leadership role in healthcare
Dr. John M. Murphy, president and CEO of Nuvance Health, has been named the inaugural Business Person of the Year by Westfair Business Publications for advocating on behalf of the healthcare industry and patient care on the local, state, and national level.
Westfair, the publisher for Fairfield County Business Journal, Westchester County Business Journal, and Hudson Valley Business Journal, noted that Dr. Murphy was instrumental in Western Connecticut Health Network’s (WCHN) merger with Health Quest Systems. First announced in 2018 and finalized in April of 2019, the merger created Nuvance Health, a $2.4 billion, seven-hospital system that serves an area with 1.5 million residents across Connecticut and New York and is staffed by more than 12,300 employees.
Dr. Murphy has more than 40 years of experience in healthcare management and medicine. A neurologist by training, Dr. Murphy held a variety of positions at Danbury Hospital before becoming CEO of WCHN, including executive vice president and chief operating officer. He also served as chairman of the Danbury Hospital and WCHN Board of Directors.
Dr. Murphy currently serves on numerous boards. He is the chairman of the Connecticut Hospital Association Board of Trustees and also on the Board of the Value Care Alliance (VCA), of which he is a founding member. Prior to taking on an administrative role in healthcare, Dr. Murphy practiced neurology in the Danbury area for 20 years, where he still sees patients in a free clinic.
Dr. Murphy has received many honors during his tenure as a healthcare administrator and physician. He was recently named one of the top 100 physician leaders of health systems in the United States by Becker’s Hospital Review. He received the Fairfield County Medical Association’s (FCMA) Melville G. Magida award for notable capability in patient care and also the Benjamin Rush Lifetime Achievement award. He is frequently listed among the “Best Doctors” in metropolitan Connecticut and New York as well as the “Best Doctors” in America.
