UV Innovators (http://www.uvinnovators.com), an ultraviolet technology company, announced today that David J. Weber, M.D., M.P.H., has joined its scientific advisory board. Dr. Weber, a preeminent global expert in infection prevention, serves as Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine, Professor of Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Associate Chief Medical Officer for UNC Health Care, and Medical Director of the Department of Infection Prevention for the UNC Medical Center. Since the first days of the outbreak, he has been working with the CDC, FDA, and other local health departments to understand the coronavirus (COVID-19) and its mechanism for community spreading.

“The global public health and financial impact of COVID-19 have put a strain on resources and created a substantial need to find therapeutic and preventative solutions quickly,” stated Dr. Weber. “People are coming to understand the necessity of social distancing, wearing a face mask, having good hand hygiene and effective surface disinfection solutions,” Weber added.

“Dr. Weber is on the frontlines of infection prevention, especially concerning antibiotic-resistant pathogens, disinfection methodology, and outbreak investigations. He has a personal goal to eliminate healthcare-associated infections which is aligned with our company’s mission,” stated Dr. Nicholas Medendorp, Jr., CEO of UV Innovators. “A study in the New England Journal of Medicine has identified that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can survive and remain contagious on surfaces for many hours. There must be further expansion into UVC disinfection as an effective means of combating this deadly virus,” states Dr. Medendorp.

The UV Innovators team designs and develops ultraviolet technology, conducts pathogen inactivation testing, and produces industrial-grade UVC disinfection solutions to all industries in need of infection control and prevention. To learn more about how SARS-CoV-2 can live on surfaces for up to 8 hours, review this article in the New England Journal of Medicine (382; 2020, 16, 1564-1567).
