BPM+ Health members are developing a common language and approach that will improve clinical practices globally, resulting in better health outcomes at reduced cost.
NEEDHAM, Mass. (PRWEB)
February 19, 2020
BPM+ Health, a community initiative to improve the quality and consistency of healthcare delivery, announced that it will participate in the HIMSS20 Global Health Conference & Exhibition, March 9 – 13, 2020, in Orlando, Florida. BPM+ Health will engage healthcare professionals and other stakeholders at HIMSS20 – the largest global health information and technology event – discussing its work to improve the quality and consistency of patient outcomes through the creation of open notational standards, supporting workflow and clinical pathways to fill a void that exists today.
“Many healthcare providers find it challenging to leverage and disseminate evidence-based practices to the point of care, which is intensified as patients navigate between care organizations,” said Ken Rubin, Acting Convener of the BPM+ Health community, and Director of Standards and Interoperability, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “BPM+ Health members are developing a common language and approach that will improve clinical practices globally, resulting in better health outcomes at reduced cost, enabling contributors and consumers to advance their care practices without usurping their intellectual property.”
One of the first deliverables of the community is the Field Guide to Shareable Clinical Pathways, which supports the implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols to enable sharing between organizations. BPM+ Health operates as a non-profit industry trade consortium, and is open to all interested parties. With stakeholders representing multiple interests, including vendors, healthcare providers, professional societies and others, there are dedicated, focused communities-of-practice around all aspects of workflows, from authoring to adoption to implementation, in both clinical and administrative domains.

Veteran Care without Boundaries – Demonstrates the automation and orchestration of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and U.S. Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) using industry standards. Veterans’ journeys will be orchestrated in real time: identifying emerging risks, mitigating CKD impacts and preventing a lifetime of costly dialysis appointments. It includes end-user application workflow integration and plug n’ play clinical decision support (CDS) tools from an ecosystem of partners. BPM+ Health member participants: Perspecta, RedHat, Trisotech and MDIX. Location: Interoperability Pavilion; Time: Tours start every 45 minutes
Care without Boundaries: Using Standards to Automate Data, Knowledge and Process Exchange across a Federated Landscape – Focuses on the incorporation of the standards for terminology, data exchange, process automation and knowledge endpoints to automate the delivery of best practice guidelines across the patient’s journey to make healthcare cheaper, better, faster and more satisfying for all stakeholders. BPM+ Health member participants: University of Utah, industry supporter HSPC and Perspecta Labs. Location: Interoperability Showcase Education Theater; Time: Tuesday, March 10, from 1:30pm – 2:30pm
A Shareable Clinical Pathway for Anemia Management – A shareable clinical pathway is a visual decision model that is both human readable and machine automatable. Such a standardized workflow can improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare processes. Session presents models for the diagnosis and management of anemia and demonstrates the automation capability of BPM+ Health. This session is led by BPM+ Health member Trisotech. Location: Innovation Live, Theater; Time: Wednesday, March 11 from 11:45am – 12:05pm
From Evidence to Encounter: Accelerating Clinical Quality – The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has engaged the BPM+ Health community to apply the use of formal expression language BPM+ to document care pathways. This will not only make care pathways easier to document, it will also help mitigate inherent risks and gaps in care that might occur across care transitions, improve VA compliance with established industry clinical best practices and position the VA to adopt new care pathways more effectively and rapidly. This session also discusses how existing paper-based pathways can be adapted, allowing for improved care and more effective care transitions between external partners. BPM+ Health member participants: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, American College of Emergency Physicians. Location: Hall E – Booth 8300 – Education Theater; Time: Thursday, March 12 from 11:30 – 12:30
