BraunAbility, Huntington Bank, Toyota Mobility and Superior Van and Mobility Give the Gift of Independence to Indiana Family

donors gather with the recipients to present a new wheelchair van

Representatives from BraunAbility, Superior Van and Mobility and Huntington Bank were on hand to officially deliver the wheelchair-accessible BraunAbility Toyota Hybrid to Tracie and Darrell Ridgeway.

“Now Darrel and I will be able to travel places together and make lasting memories. We can take our children, grandchildren, and parents with us and reconnect,” said Tracie. “Most importantly, it will allow us to do things and enjoy each other while we still can and while I’m still mobile.”

Tracie and Darrell Ridgeway of Winchester, IN have spent over three decades of Valentine’s Days together, but this year’s is one they’ll always remember.

That’s because on Feb. 14th, the Ridgeways found out they would be receiving the keys to a brand-new wheelchair van donated to the couple through a partnership with Superior Van and Mobility, Toyota Mobility, Huntington Bank and Indiana-based mobility leader BraunAbility, who celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022.

Early in its anniversary year, Indiana-based BraunAbility announced a series of product donations to honor the company’s 50 years of leadership in automotive mobility. Industry partners Toyota Mobility, Huntington Bank and Superior Van and Mobility all agreed to contribute to the donation of a brand-new wheelchair van to change the life of a family in BraunAbility’s home state: the Ridgeways.

Since 2020, a gradual loss of muscle strength resulting in diminished mobility led Tracie Ridgeway to eventually utilize services provided by The ALS Association. The couple, who was known for taking long road trips on their Harley Davidson motorcycle, had now found themselves without the ability to travel together at all. That will all change with a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

The vehicle is a Toyota Sienna Hybrid made accessible by BraunAbility, but this wheelchair van is especially unique. It’s a 50th anniversary edition BraunAbility Toyota Rampvan® with a side-entry foldout ramp and custom lower body striping. It will allow Darrell and Tracie to reclaim their independence and make it easier to get to appointments and clinic visits, as well as leisure travel with their 4 children, including their teenage son who still lives at home.

“Now Darrel and I will be able to travel places together and make lasting memories. We can take our children, grandchildren, and parents with us on outings and reconnect,” said Tracie. “Most importantly though, it will allow us to do things and enjoy each other while we still can and while I’m still mobile.”

Since 2020, Tracie and Darrell have given back to the ALS Community, volunteering in outreach and fundraising efforts.

The ALS Association’s goal is to empower people in the Indiana communities they serve, to engage with the world in the way they want; reduce the physical, emotional, and financial burdens they face; and connect them with high quality services that benefit them where they are on their journey. In 2022 The ALS Association served 394 people living with ALS and their families in Indiana. The organization was able to provide 69 families with 78 pieces of essential equipment and held 41 support groups and meetings to provide emotional care and resources to our ALS community.

About BraunAbility

Commission for Case Manager Certification commends strength of social workers during National Social Work Month

The Commission for Case Manager Certification applauds social workers this National Social Work Month for their contributions to improving health care outcomes and announces a new affiliation to support case managers struggling with increasing levels of burnout, depression, and anxiety among the health care workforce.

Clients grappling with complex health care needs in a convoluted system face challenges that may hinder their health outcomes. According to a new workforce survey from the Commission, social workers—who comprise about 9% of the over 50,000 board-certified case managers holding the Certified Case Manager (CCM®) credential,—can help empower clients to overcome these hurdles across an array of settings and bring additional expertise that enhances case management excellence. With their thorough understanding of social determinants of health, social workers bring an important whole-person perspective as valuable team members who coordinate care and care transitions, advocate on behalf of their clients, connect clients with crucial community and social resources, and offering emotional support.

The Commission honors social workers’ tremendous achievements, but notes that as a part of the health care workforce facing rising rates of stress and emotional exhaustion, they grow increasingly likely to face challenges of their own.

Acknowledging the urgent need to address the health care burnout crisis, the Commission has joined the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience, a growing network of organizations committed to advancing solutions to the alarming levels of burnout among U.S. health care professionals. This Collaborative supports NAM’s National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being, launched in October 2022, which includes the following three strategies:

  • Creating and sustaining positive work and learning environments and culture
  • Investing in measurement, assessment, strategies, and research
  • Supporting mental health and reducing stigma

These priorities align closely with the Commission’s mission and strategic priorities as well as its focus to support certificants as they face current workforce challenges.

“Case managers, many of whom are social workers, provide indispensable support to help clients achieve optimal health, and we honor their resilience,” said MaryBeth Kurland, MPA, CAE, ICE-CCP, CEO of the Commission. “However, if their own overall well-being is in question, their ability to support clients is greatly diminished. In joining NAM’s Collaborative, the Commission continues our commitment to building resilience and supporting a healthy workforce culture for our certificants. We intend to seek ways to help certificants overcome these challenges just as they do for their clients.”

In surveys fielded by the Commission over the last two years, respondents consistently cited stress as a significant challenge. Nearly half (45%) of respondents reported being overworked and expecting long hours and large caseloads to continue. More than a quarter (27%) cited personal mental health issues. In addition, close to 15% indicated they planned to resign within a year of their response, and 20% expected worsening compensation and benefits. Large-scale burnout was, and remains, a significant risk among the case manager population.

“Our chief aim is to see case managers and disability management specialists empowered, strong and united,” noted Teri Treiger, RN, MA, CCM, CHCQM, FABQAURP, Chair of the Commission. “This is the vision that will continue to motivate us to ensure professional board-certified case managers and disability management specialists flourish in an environment that supports professional development and personal accomplishment.”

Coalition for Family Harmony Opens a Second Domestic Violence Shelter for Indigenous Survivors of Violence

News Image

Our indigenous communities suffer in silence, not knowing that there is help for them. We will work hard to break the barriers that make it difficult for them to leave abusive relationships.

Coalition for Family Harmony (Coalition) is proud to announce a second domestic violence shelter serving indigenous survivors of domestic violence that opened in February 2023. Coalition was awarded funding from Cal OES in a competitive application to provide emergency housing to a specialized population. Using a peer-based model of service, the new shelter is staffed with trilingual advocates of various languages to better serve survivors who hesitate to reach out because they are undocumented and have language barriers.

Coalition domestic violence counselors have long understood that when a survivor of domestic violence leaves their abusive partner, they are often forced to leave their home and their community to keep themselves and their children safe. These issues are compounded for victims of abuse from the indigenous community, as they find themselves in a country with few legal rights, a severe lack of language access, and a skyrocketing cost of living. Furthermore, indigenous survivors working in the agriculture sector or in factories oftentimes work at the same place of employment as their abuser and rely on shared friends and family to afford to live in Ventura County.

Severing ties with a community that provides spiritual healing and a sense of social connection can cause lasting mental and emotional harm for generations. Using a peer model, the goal of our new shelter is to create a safe space for our indigenous community members to have the time to heal, receive legal and therapeutic support, and help children with the impacts of domestic violence in their lives.

Through trilingual domestic violence support and advocacy, our new program emphasizes identifying avenues for income and housing to help the survivor maintain economic independence and build community with other survivors of domestic violence.

Since 1976, Coalition for Family Harmony has served survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Ventura County. The Coalition’s mission is to provide direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; to educate the community regarding multiple forms of violence; and to prevent the cycle of violence. Since its inception, Coalition has helped save thousands of lives and stop the deadly cycle of violence in families.

Since then, the agency has transformed to address multiple factors in the cycle of violence including victims, perpetrators, children who have witnessed or experienced family violence, early prevention, and socioeconomic barriers victims may have prevented them from thriving. These barriers include safe and permanent housing, accessing mental health services, and legal counsel or representation in cases related to their victimization such as restraining orders, property disputes, child custody, divorce, and immigration. Last year, the Coalition served over 5,000 clients across all programming.

“Our indigenous communities suffer in silence, not knowing that there is help for them. We will work hard to break the barriers that make it difficult for them to leave abusive relationships. The shelter will be a haven where they can get all the help they need in a way that they understand and feel understood,” said Laura Morales, Housing Services Manager.

The new shelter is in addition to the portfolio of housing options available through the Coalition including emergency shelter and transitional housing.

Survivors may call our 24-hour trilingual hotline at 800-300-2181.

New Book Gives a Researched Perspective on Women Leaders Throughout Various Platforms

News Image

As Merelyn Webber was growing up, she could see the barriers women faced if they wanted to undertake any leadership roles at her church. She has failed to see any progress in female patriarchy. Webber aims to present valid points in her new publishing debut.

Titled, Head of the House: Is it a Sin for Women to Lead?”, Webber designed the book as a well-researched and inspiring read. She addressed it to women and for women critiquing theological and social patriarchy. Webber structured the book to help women understand for themselves what God and his word have to say about what he intends their roles in society to be.

She contends that the issue of equal opportunity for women and men to rule needs to be examined soberly by all and not left to the experts to decide.

“Triune God is not hierarchical, therefore humankind—made in his image, should not be hierarchical either,” Webber said.

The focus of this book is for Webber to address the very question that is her book title. In order to address this question thoroughly, she uses examples of exemplary women, and the hardships women endure gender reconciliation and revisiting God’s original intention in Eden. Her approach is personal and inquisitive.

“My desire is to share what I have learned with others who also might be struggling,” Webber said.

The Costello Law Firm Website Now in Full Compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act

We’re delighted to work with accessiBe to make our website fully accessible and user-friendly for all of our clients including those with disabilities covered under the ADA, said Christopher Costello, managing partner of the Costello Law Firm.

TheCostello Law Firm (Costello), a civil law firm specializing in personal injury law, worker’s compensation and healthcare provider law, today announced a strategic partnership with AI technology provider accessiBe to bring its website in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and WCAG 2.1.

Today, people with disabilities currently make up roughly 20% of the total US population, leaving one in five individuals without proper access to the internet. Since all accessibility (digital and physical) is a civil right, companies and law firms like Costello need to ensure that their websites are accessible for all users

“We’re delighted to work with accessiBe to make our website fully accessible and user-friendly for all of our clients including those with disabilities covered under the ADA,” said Christopher Costello, managing partner of the Costello Law Firm. “We hope to lead by example so other law firms across the state of New Jersey and the country at large will join us in ensuring a level digital playing field for everyone seeking legal services on the Internet.”

Thanks to accessiBe’s AI technology, Costello Law Firm’s website is now fully equipped to provide the following website profile enhancements for people with disabilities:

  • Seizure Safe – clears flashes and reduces color
  • Vision Impaired – enhances website’s visuals
  • ADHD Friendly – more focus and fewer distractions
  • Cognitive Disability – assists with reading and focusing
  • Keyboard Navigations (Motor) – use website with keyboard
  • Blind Users – optimize website for screen readers

“We are committed to partnering with professionals, from web agencies to freelance developers and marketers, to equip them with the tools they need to open their websites to the disability community,” said Shir Ekerling, co-founder and CEO of accessiBe. “We are thrilled to partner with Costello to help ensure that their clients can achieve and maintain web accessibility. This includes 24-hour automatic maintenance scans of any new and updated content, along with monthly compliance audits.”

The ADA is the United States’ most important law regarding accessibility and civil rights for people with disabilities. Originally signed into law in 1990, the ADA prohibits discrimination against anyone based on ability or disability. In 2017, a clear consensus emerged that the ADA also covers the online world. Disability rights activists, legal scholars, and court rulings have agreed that websites, internet portals, and online stores need to be accessible for people with disabilities.

Today, U.S. courts apply ADA accessibility requirements to the internet, meaning websites should comply with ADA rules. Reinforcement was displayed by the Department of Justice in 2022 when it released a new guidance on implementing web accessibility standards and practices, clarifying that the ADA indeed covers web accessibility.

ADA title III-related lawsuits have skyrocketed. There were at least 11,452 federal filings in 2021, which is a 320 percent increase over a short, eight-year period. And, as of 2020, approximately 265,000 filings were sent to businesses that operated inaccessible websites.

Columbia Threadneedle Volunteers Assemble 450 Braille Books on Read Across America Day for National Braille Press

We truly appreciate the volunteers of Columbia Threadneedle who assembled these new braille books so that blind and low vision children and adults can read along with their sighted members of their families

On March 2, 2023, Read Across America Day,volunteers from Columbia Threadneedle Investments’ Boston office assembled 450 braille copies of the children’s book Paddington, in partnership with Boston-based National Braille Press (NBP). Read Across America Day is an annual event established by the National Education Association in 1998 to help kids get excited about reading.

The braille copies of Paddington by Michael Bond and illustrated by R. W. Alley, are part of the Children’s Braille Book Club where every month, NBP editors choose a popular, classic or seasonably-appropriate children’s book in print. Then, NBP production staff cuts the print books apart at the spine and inserts the identical text in braille on transparent plastic sheets, followed by rebounding the books in a print/braille format so that both blind and sighted members of a family can read together. The Columbia Threadneedle volunteers helped with the final step in the process, assembling the books for distribution.

“We truly appreciate the volunteers of Columbia Threadneedle who assembled these new braille books so that blind and low vision children and adults can read along with their sighted members of their families,” said Brian Mac Donald, President, of National Braille Press. “We are able to subsidize children’s braille books for blind readers so that they cost no more than retail print books, through volunteer efforts like Columbia Threadneedle which has been a longtime supporter of our organization.”

About 30 Columbia Threadneedle volunteers assembled the 450 braille copies of Paddington in a room at their Fort Point Channel office. They assembled the books in approximately four hours.

‘‘Columbia Threadneedle is proud to support National Braille Press and the great work that the organization does around the world to promote braille literacy for blind and low-vision individuals,“ said David Kennedy, Senior Portfolio Manager, Columbia Threadneedle and Trustee of National Braille Press. “Our volunteers did a great job assembling the braille children’s books and we hope that their contribution will make an impact.“

Nationally Recognized Leader Releases New Book about Following Christ-Like Leadership

News Image

“Taking the narrow path does not mean you are rigid and narrow-minded. It is the opposite of that,” Oostra said. “The book provides you a framework, a context, a lens for your life narrative that will allow you to have a broader, more inclusive vision for your life purpose.”

One day, RD (Randy) Oostra was working on several presentations at the same time. A business presentation that had stacks of papers piled high was near a stack of files for his Bible study group. The two piles teetered and fell together, not only creating a mess but also a metaphor for the life Oostra was trying to lead, that both business leadership and faith can be intertwined. That metaphor turned into an idea that led Oostra to write his debut book, “The Narrow Path to Expansive Vision: Essays on following the light of the greatest leader who ever lived: Jesus Christ”.

The book is a guide for religious and secular readers looking to learn about Christ-inspired leadership. Oostra wants his readers to find a practical approach that can positively shape their lives by taking a Christ-inspired leadership framework based on the Gospels and comparing it with some of the most influential secular writings on leadership over recent decades.

“Taking the narrow path does not mean you are rigid and narrow-minded. It is the opposite of that,” Oostra said. “The book provides you a framework, a context, a lens for your life narrative that will allow you to have a broader, more inclusive vision for your life purpose.”

In addition, Oostra tells the story of his childhood set in a rigorous Dutch reformation community, and how he navigated through the science-based world of healthcare, as well as his frustrations with Church leadership.

“It is my hope that, through my journey, this Christ-inspired leadership framework can be of benefit to anyone who is exploring their life purpose, whether as a Christian or non-Christian, or someone who doesn’t have strong faith or any faith at all,” Oostra said.
