Makin’ Music 46 Hosts, Hostesses: Back row, l to r: Joshua Grooms and Elijah Hester; front row, l to r: Kayley Wadlington, Kaitlyn Moore, Peggy Weaver (alumna and music director) and Brooke Roberts.

We hope many will reminisce in Gano, while enjoying a delicious meal there before the big show and before the space meets a new purpose on campus.

Tickets for the 46th annual Freed-Hardeman University Makin’ Music are on sale at fhu.edu/makinmusic. The student musical extravaganza is scheduled for Friday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Loyd Auditorium. Tickets are $20 for Friday night and Saturday matinee and $25 for the Saturday night show.

Five social clubs will compete for the sweepstakes trophy, as they, a talented troupe of hosts and hostesses, the Makin’ Music Show Band and emcees will entertain thousands of guests. Chi Beta Chi, Omega Chi, Phi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Rho and Xi Chi Delta are the clubs in this year’s show, and approximately 500 students comprise the show’s cast.

The theme for this year’s show is “Hold On.” According to Makin’ Music Coordinator Peyton Cain, the theme was chosen as a tribute to the people and memories FHU alumni hold on to, as well as the Makin’ Music traditions that the FHU family holds dear.

In addition to the sweepstakes trophy, various category winners and the Spirit of Makin’ Music Award, a new accolade has been added to this year’s list. Each year, Makin’ Music presents a show for area school children in selected grades. A Kids’ Choice award will be presented during Saturday’s matinee to the show receiving the most votes during the kids’ show.

Coordinators assisting producer Tony Allen with the show are Cain, senior biochemistry major from Katy, Texas, and Addie Everson, junior public relations major from Mesquite, Texas.

Hostesses are Kaitlyn Moore, junior social work major from Henderson, Tennessee; Kayley Wadlington, senior elementary education major from Cadiz, Kentucky; and Brooke Roberts, senior biology major from Knoxville, Tennessee. They are joined by hosts Elijah Hester, junior business major, and Joshua Grooms, senior Bible major from Duncan, South Carolina. FHU alumna and former Makin’ Music hostess Peggy Weaver returns to direct the vocalists, and FHU alumnus and staff member Jarred Clayton is directing the show band.

Makin’ Music 46 on-stage emcees are Natalie Turner, an education major from Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Michael Mullinicks, a Bible major from Hohenwald, Tennessee; and Mac Shelton, a public relations major from Henderson, Tennessee. This year’s voice of Makin’ Music is Cy Warren, a Bible and music major from Thompson’s Station, Tennessee.

Party on the Green returns Saturday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Bader Green in the center of campus. The event will welcome guests with food trucks, inflatable jumpers, a photo booth and cheering on club members in the cast parade at 6:50 p.m.

The event also includes Gano’s final curtain call, when alumni and other visitors are invited to enjoy a special meal in Wallace-Gano Dining Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. This Makin’ Music themed meal is being dubbed Gano’s final curtain call because a new dining hall is under construction and by next year’s Makin’ Music, Gano will have been repurposed as a part of FHU NEXT campaign. Cost is $15 for those 10 and older and free for 9 and younger.

“We hope many will reminisce in Gano, while enjoying a delicious meal there before the big show and before the space meets a new purpose on campus,” Chris Ramey, director of alumni engagement, said. Funds raised by the dinner will be used to enhance student life.

Additional Makin’ Music weekend activities are scheduled specially for prospective students and their families. On April 14, new students may register for Fall 2023 classes by scheduling a registration appointment with their regional admissions director. Friday is also Maroon & Gold Day, which offers high school students and their parents an opportunity to tour the campus, learn about academic programs, meet current students and faculty, attend chapel and have lunch. Maroon & Gold Day is free; any interested high school or college age student can register at fhu.edu/maroonandgoldday. Group campus tours for interested students will be held Saturday at 5 p.m. Registration for all admission events is available at fhu.edu/visit.

The mission of Freed-Hardeman University is to help students develop their God-given talents for His glory by empowering them with an education that integrates Christian faith, scholarship and service. With locations in Henderson and Memphis, FHU offers associates, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees. More information is available at fhu.edu.

Youth at center access long-term services and help with education

News Image

Youth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo* received healthy nutrition thanks to a partnership between Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, and Rise Against Hunger, an international relief organization that provides food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable.

The rice-meals were sent to the Salesian Projects Office of the Central Africa Province and distributed to Salesian programs in the second half of 2022.

One of the recipients was the Bakanja Center, which serves youth who arrive from the Salesian Bakanja Ville, which acts as a drop-in and reception center for homeless youth who are looking to escape the challenges of living on the streets.

At the Bakanja Center, youth can access more long-term services that help with their recovery and education. Sami Mujinga Lapp is one of the youth who received the rice-meal donation at the Bakanja Center.

Lapp said, “I feel at home in this center that has welcomed me after living on the street. After receiving my education with the Salesians, I would like to be a great mechanic. I think that I would like to move to Zambia to earn a living. I want to contribute to society and help other street youth.”

Lapp also enjoys the camaraderie of eating with his friends. He added, “Often I sit next to my friends and we share our meals and talk and joke. We like to laugh together. Since I started eating the Rise Against Hunger meals, I feel healthy, and my weight even increased. It is a very good meal, especially for malnourished children. I would say it’s important for me to eat this meal because it contains the necessary vitamins for the body. For our community, this meal has allowed those of us who were undernourished a chance to regain normal health.”

Salesian missionaries have been working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for more than 100 years ensuring that the most vulnerable children are not forgotten. Salesian primary and secondary schools and programs lay the foundation for early learning while Salesian trade, vocational and agricultural programs offer many youth the opportunity for a stable and productive future.

*Any goods, services, or funds provided by Salesian Missions to programs located in this country were administered in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including sanctions administered by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control.

Senior Care Franchise Right at Home Targets Expansion in Daytona Beach; Looking to Meet Qualified Prospective Franchisees Wanting to Make a Difference in Their Community

Right at Home, the 650-plus location in-home health care concept helping seniors and adults with disabilities live comfortably at home, is looking to expand in Daytona Beach, Florida. The opportunity gives local entrepreneurs a chance to make a difference in their communities and provide peace of mind to families needing care.

Right at Home employs professionally-trained caregivers to provide care and assistance to seniors and adults with disabilities who wish to remain in the comfort and safety of their own home or current living arrangement. With over 26 years of experience providing essential care in more than 650 locations across eight countries, Right at Home has become one of the world’s largest in-home health care franchises.

With persons aged 65 and over making up 20% of its population, Daytona Beach is primed for Right at Home’s services. In general, Florida has the second-highest population of seniors out of all 50 states. And as thousands of Americans are crossing the 65-year-old threshold every day, a phenomenon coined the “silver tsunami,” there will be continued demand for the franchise’s services in the state. In fact, there are already 57 Right at Home territories sold in Florida.

“Right at Home starts with our passionate franchise owners, and we’re excited to partner with the people of Daytona Beach,” said Jennifer Chaney, Vice President of Franchise Development. “We are seeking passionate individuals who aren’t just looking for a business to make a living. Entrepreneurs should choose Right at Home to make a positive impact on their communities and the people for whom they provide care. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those we serve.”

With its eyes on Daytona Beach, the industry-leading in-home health care concept is seeking qualified franchise partners to provide its much-needed services within three territories in the market.

Right at Home is seeing an increased demand for quality in-home care services across the country as the baby boomer generation reaches its senior years. During 2020 and 2021, the franchise not only survived the height of the pandemic but came out of it stronger than ever– exceeding growth goals by 40%. And in 2022, Right at Home picked up even more momentum as it continued to bring its best-in-class in-home health care services to families in new markets across the country. This year, Right at Home is looking forward to building on that growth, including in Daytona Beach.

ABOUT RIGHT AT HOME:

New Book Gives a Researched Perspective on Women Leaders Throughout Various Platforms

News Image

As Merelyn Webber was growing up, she could see the barriers women faced if they wanted to undertake any leadership roles at her church. She has failed to see any remarkable progress since that time. Webber aims to present valid points in her new publishing debut.

In “Head of the House: Is it a Sin for Women to Lead?”, Webber provides a well-researched read addressing a woman’s critique of the theological and social patriarchy. Webber structured the book to help women understand what God and his word have to say about what he intended their roles in society to be.

She contends that the issue of equal opportunity for women and men to rule needs to be examined, soberly, by all, and not left to the “experts” to decide.

“Triune God is not hierarchical, therefore humankind—made in his image, should not be hierarchical either,” Webber said.

The focus of this book is for Webber to address the question in her title: “Is it a sin for women to lead?” She uses examples of exemplary women, and the hardships women endured for gender reconciliation and revisiting God’s original intention in Eden. Her approach is personal and inquisitive.

“My desire is to share what I have learned with others who also might be struggling,” Webber said.

Aaron Moses Releases New Single, “Giving Again” with Matt Redman

News Image

“That’s how the hook started: Open eyes… I’m counting all my blessings. Open hearts… to overflow with praise. Open hands… because you keep giving and giving again. ‘Giving Again’ is about the constant attention God pays to us,” explained Aaron Moses.

Latin-American singer, songwriter, and producer, Aaron Moses released his first song in collaboration with AMEN Music and TRUE Music since his transition away from Maverick City Music at the end of 2022. The release titled, “Giving Again” was written alongside GRAMMY-Award-winning worship leader and songwriter, Matt Redman, and multi-platinum-selling singer and songwriter, Dante Bowe.

“Giving Again” was introduced to a live audience on January 15, 2023, at the Echo Lounge in Dallas, TX at AMEN Nights | Chapter 1, the first of AMEN Church’s community-wide worship events held monthly across the city of Dallas. Aaron Moses led the song, “Giving Again” and after, Dante Bowe spontaneously moved into a new song that was later titled, “Every Time I Look Around” released earlier this month on AMEN Music’s YouTube channel. Today both songs are available on all streaming platforms.

Aaron Moses and Dante Bowe are long-time friends who have been writing songs together for nearly a decade, and years before their formal partnership with Maverick City Music. “We started writing songs in a little two-bed, one bathroom single-wide trailer in the middle of the woods in Smith Station, Alabama,” Aaron Moses recalled the days he began writing future GRAMMY-award-winning songs. “Songs like, ‘Keep on Getting Better,’ ‘Take Me Back,’ and ‘Promises.’ Those songs all began there.”

Aaron Moses and Dante Bowe flew to California to collaborate on Matt Redman’s latest album, where the single, “Giving Again” was born. “We flew to California to write for Matt’s album, and ‘Giving Again‘ was like the first song of the first session of the day,” Aaron Moses explained. “We just started writing around the idea of the constant provision of God. God is always aware of our needs. He’s not so detached from our circumstances, as we may imagine Him to be. Being God — being so sovereign — we imagine Him to be detached from our day-to-day lives. But in that session, we just began to talk about how God keeps giving to us. That’s how the hook started: Open eyes… I’m counting all my blessings. Open hearts… to overflow with praise. Open hands… because you keep giving and giving again. ‘Giving Again‘ is about the constant attention God pays to us.”

Since his separation from Maverick City Music, Aaron Moses has rebranded as a solo artist and producer working alongside TRUE Music and AMEN Music collective. The song, “Giving Again” will be released as the first single in AMEN Music’s first EP album, scheduled to be released later this year with original songs by various artists, including Dante Bowe, Aaron Moses, Nate Diaz, TIANNA, and others — all recorded live at AMEN Church’s monthly community-wide worship events.

The next worship event, AMEN Nights | Chapter 3, will be held on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at 6:00 pm at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, TX. The event is free of charge and open to the public. For more information on the event, visit http://www.theamenchurch.com.

Christian Author Shares the Teachings of the Tabernacle in New Book

News Image

“Through understanding the Tabernacle, we may understand who we are in Christ,” Holmes said. “Christ encourages us to become a kingdom of priests to share the teachings and love of God with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.”

At 21, author Bobby Holmes was introduced to the Tabernacle. Decades later, the author is now teaching the Tabernacle to fellow followers of Christ. Understanding that the study may be known to very few, Holmes desired to share his teachings by writing his new book, “Into His Presence: Tabernacle & the Priesthood.”

In the book, readers may learn how to live according to God’s word and grow in his presence. The Tabernacle shows God’s depth of his love for his children through the building and teachings within it. Holmes hopes the insights he reveals in his book will equip others with the knowledge to teach it themselves.

“Through understanding the Tabernacle, we may understand who we are in Christ,” Holmes said. “Christ encourages us to become a kingdom of priests to share the teachings and love of God with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Introduced as the first of Holmes’ three-part series, the addition of an “Instructors Study Guide,” and “Students Question Book,” offers an interactive environment where God’s divine truths are discussed, through an in-depth study of the original Hebrew and Greek language. He hopes this helps to inspire the formation of study groups that result in engaged discussions.

“I want my readers to walk through the Tabernacle, see it, touch it, and experience the very presence of God,” said Holmes. “The Tabernacle is God’s design of worship and praise. When we allow ourselves to be saved in Christ, we become part of the priesthood.”

Author and illustrator Emily Mae shares the story of Noah in her colorful new children’s book “Hi, I’m Noah!”

Young children can enjoy the book with familiar animals and colorful images. The simple text is written to be approachable to younger readers, or to be read as a bedtime story.

Incorporating usability for people with disabilities in product development cycles has proven to consistently drive product innovations that have drastically improved the way we all live and work.

Fable was named to Fast Company’s list of the The World’s Most Innovative Companies 2023 last week, based on its strides in making the digital world more inclusive for everyone.

Fast Company said the list highlights, “businesses at the forefront of their respective industries. These companies are setting the standard with some of the greatest accomplishments of the modern world.” The publication’s reporters and editors placed Fable number 5 in the top 10 companies in design, noting, “…companies like Figma and Fable are redefining what it means to make design accessible to all.”

“Our goal from the beginning has been to fundamentally change how digital teams build products,” said Alwar Pillai, co-founder and CEO of Fable. “Incorporating usability for people with disabilities in product development cycles has proven to consistently drive product innovations that have drastically improved the way we all live and work.”

Fable joins the ranks of many of their innovative customers who have made Fast Company’s list this year and in previous years, including Microsoft, Figma, and Shopify.

Over one billion people live with a disability globally. This largely unaddressed market segment is vastly increasing due to an ageing population. Digital inclusion and accessibility are vital, everything from media, to commerce and healthcare, is moving online. However, the digital products and websites we depend on are still often unusable to people with disabilities.

Fable challenges organizations to think differently about accessibility problems. Through testing and training platforms that provide insight into, and expertise from, the lived experiences of people with disabilities, Fable clients are discovering innovative solutions that make their products better for everyone.
