For All I Trust Him” is an emotional tale of a mother’s faith after losing three children in a fateful accident

News Image

“A Childlike Faith: For All I Trust Him”: a heartrending look back on how God helped the author recover from a heartbreaking loss. “A Childlike Faith: For All I Trust Him” is the creation of published author Tonya King Richard.

Richard shares, “On Friday night, August 7, 1987, my three youngest children—Amanda (eleven), Kevin (nine), and Craig (eight)—went with their daddy, my cousin Coby (seventeen, we had taken him in to live with us), and Amanda’s friend Samantha to see the movie He-Man: Masters of the Universe. Craig, our youngest, had just celebrated his eighth birthday on Monday on the third (he was our seventh wedding anniversary gift). Our oldest daughter Michelle (fourteen years) had asked to go ‘eat and ride’ with a friend and would be back by ten o’clock that night. I stayed home to wait for their return. My family would never return home on Aster Dr. The strangest fact about what happened that fateful night was that Amanda knew she was going to die. She did not know when or how. She never seemed to be afraid, but in Amanda’s last eight months on this earth, she began to ask me and other family members, ‘Am I going to die?’ She would also ask this strange question about her younger brothers whenever they fell ill or if they were injured while playing. This is not a happily-ever-after type fairy tale. No one except for God and the hosts of heaven can rejoice the death of a child. This is a true, gut-wrenching story about love, gratitude, relationships, mistakes, forgiveness through repentance, and, most of all, faith. I know with every fiber of my being my three children are with God in heaven. You see, they believed in Jesus more than they believed in anyone! After losing them, I can clearly see God had a plan for their short lives here on this earth. As a repentant, forgiving, born-again Christian, I am simply…His witness. God had a plan for my three youngest children. This is their story, or, as some say, ‘their legacy of love.’”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Tonya King Richard’s new book is a poignant retelling of the author’s life and faith.

Richard’s conviction is unshakeable through this moving story of loss, sorrow, and unwavering faith in God’s plan.

Consumers can purchase “A Childlike Faith: For All I Trust Him” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.

Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D., selected as 25th president of Loyola University Maryland

Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D., Loyola's 25th president

Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D., Loyola’s 25th president

“I am humbled and honored to have this incredible opportunity to serve as Loyola’s next president,” Sawyer said. “These are undoubtedly challenging times for higher education, but Loyola is extremely well-positioned for all that lies ahead.”

The Loyola University Maryland Board of Trustees has unanimously selected Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D., as the institution’s 25th president. Sawyer, currently Loyola’s senior vice president, was chosen after a national search following the June 2021 retirement of the Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., who led the University for 16 years. Sawyer will begin as president on Jan. 1, 2022.

Sawyer will be the University’s first layperson to serve as president; all previous presidents have been ordained Jesuit priests.

About Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D.

A leader at Loyola for 23 years, Sawyer has assumed increasingly significant responsibilities during his tenure at the University, advancing strategic priorities and supporting the growth of the institution. When he started at Loyola in 1998, Sawyer served as special assistant to the president for government and community relations. He rose to the position of vice president for administration before being selected as vice president for advancement in 2015. In 2017, he was named senior vice president, his current role.

In recent years, under Sawyer’s leadership, the University raised more than $100 million through the Bright Minds, Bold Hearts campaign, the largest campaign in Loyola’s history, which significantly grew the University’s endowment and student scholarship support. Sawyer has also led advancement in raising funds to support strategic capital projects, including the recently opened Miguel B. Fernandez Family Center for Innovation and Collaborative Learning.

“Terry values Jesuit, liberal arts education, knows Loyola’s strengths and challenges, and has a compelling, foundational vision for defining and shaping Loyola in the years ahead,” said James Forbes, ’80, chair of Loyola’s Board of Trustees. “He’s a critical thinker with a sound business sense and an appreciation for intellectual inquiry. He’s also a relationship builder who is ready to help Loyola achieve still greater success with a deep commitment to its Jesuit identity, academic success, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our search identified many talented leaders, but it was clear that Terry holds the greatest promise as the president who can—and will—move Loyola University Maryland forward.”

Sawyer led the University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, overseeing the planning and successful reopening and operations of Loyola’s campuses. In addition, he is an affiliate professor in Loyola’s Sellinger School of Business and Management.

“I am humbled and honored to have this incredible opportunity to serve as Loyola’s next president,” Sawyer said. “These are undoubtedly challenging times for higher education, but Loyola is extremely well-positioned for all that lies ahead. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across the University as together we create a shared vision for the future of our University.”

An Ignatian Leader

Sawyer is a graduate of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities’ Ignatian Colleagues Program, which is designed to educate and form administrators and faculty more deeply in the Jesuit and Catholic tradition of higher education. During the program, Sawyer completed the Spiritual Exercises and participated in an immersion experience in El Salvador. In June 2016, he walked in the steps of St. Ignatius on a pilgrimage through parts of Spain and Italy.

“Terry has a deep passion for Ignatian spirituality and formation, which has informed his leadership style and will serve him well as the first lay president of our Jesuit University,” Forbes said. “Our Loyola family values the Jesuit tradition and ideals that define, inspire, and drive our University. In recent years, recognizing that we do not have as many members of the Society of Jesus serving and leading at Loyola, the University has intentionally invested in the Ignatian formation of its faculty, staff, administrators, and students. The Board is confident that Terry will lead with a passion and commitment to the Jesuit, liberal arts education that we are proud to deliver to our students.”

Educational Background

A native of Wayne, New Jersey, Sawyer earned his bachelor’s degree in government and politics from the University of Maryland, College Park, was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from the Widener University School of Law, and completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Institute for Educational Management program. Prior to working at Loyola, Sawyer was an attorney for the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development and practiced civil and criminal law in Baltimore City. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar.

“Loyola is blessed to have an incredibly talented and dedicated community. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues across the University in meeting the moment and leading Loyola in this next chapter of its long and illustrious history,” Sawyer said. “The extraordinary Jesuit, Catholic liberal arts education Loyola delivers to its students is unparalleled. In this moment, we can lean into the richness of our values and tradition, while enhancing Loyola in innovative ways for the future. Loyola’s future is bright, and I feel honored to be a part of it.”

Sawyer and his wife, Courtney, a speech pathologist who earned her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Loyola, are parents to three sons—two of whom are in college and one who is serving in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps—and live in Towson, Maryland. They are parishioners of Church of the Nativity in Timonium, Maryland.

Valerie Wright’s newly released “Why Me, Lord?” is an engaging tale of the author’s experiences with the peaks and valleys of life

“Why Me, Lord?”: a potent testament to the power of leaning into God for guidance and strength during life’s journey. “Why Me, Lord?” is the creation of published author Valerie Wright, a wife, mother, and grandmother who has worked as a nurse for over thirty years and lives in Virginia near the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Wright shares, “How many times in your life have you asked yourself, ‘Why me, Lord’? Asking this question may be due to amazing blessings that God has given you, or it may be due to a devastating event that has occurred in your life. One thing you need to know is that God loves you and is always there for you and will never forsake you.

“Through the telling of her own journey, Valerie offers insight into how you can draw closer to God when adversity strikes and have a heart of gratitude when He blesses you.

“Everyone’s journey is different, but it is up to each one of you to seek God and allow Him to lead you down the path He has chosen for you. The plans He has for you are always better than the plans you have for yourselves.

“As you read this book, seek God and pray He will guide you as you walk the path He has prepared for you. Seek His will for your life, so you can become the person He desires you to be. The Lord desires an intimate relationship with you; let your guard down and accept His love and blessings.”

Author Bruce Calandro’s new book “The Diaries of Matthew” is an imagined autobiography by the former tax collector-turned-apostle decades after the crucifixion of Christ

News Image

Bruce Calandro, a Los Angeles native born in 1946, has completed his new book “The Diaries of Matthew”: a thought-provoking fictionalized memoir of life, work, and redemption of the apostle Matthew. The author writes,

“This book is mostly about Matthew and what it meant to him to get to walk with the Lord of all. This book is not about the four gospels, which were written fifty years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is a daily accounting from a confused man.

One of the twelve had to have written a diary. I believe it was Matthew. He had to be the one who was hated by the public: no one likes a tax collector. I believe that Matthew is the one who wrote the diary. He would have been the keeper of the writings. The book is Matthew’s take on the new life that the son of God has brought to earth. He saw things that no one had ever seen. Matthew witnessed Jesus reconstruct a man’s bones to let him walk. It is my fondest hope that every reader comes out a changed person, the same as Matthew. The book is about the change Matthew underwent by following the son of God in this earthly realm. One thing is for sure: Matthew could never go back to collect taxes for the Romans again. The book is mostly about Matthews take on the man called Jesus. Matthew gained a warm heart and a sound mind due to realizing the scope of God’s love that flows from him.

This book is a work of fiction…or is it?”

Published by Page Publishing, Bruce Calandro’s engrossing book is an intriguing choice for Christian readers.

Readers who wish to experience this engaging work can purchase “The Diaries of Matthew” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
